Building Better Software: The Applicability Of A Professional Tool For Automating Quality Assessment And Fault Detection., Justin S. Di Stefano

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The size of software applications is growing. It is no longer possible to achieve full coverage in pre-release testing, and in many cases it is not even possible to provide significant partial coverage. Automatic methods such as formal modeling are a possible solution, but they are far too expensive to apply to every piece of developed code. Static code defect detectors provide a solid and dependable means for selecting high risk sections of code for more expensive review, such as formal modeling or manual inspection. Historically, static code defect detectors have been vilified in academic and industrial domains on the …

Further, some studies have found that older adults experience more interference in their lives due to anxiety. The present study aimed to identify age differences in one process related to anxiety: worry. Additionally, differences in self-reported control over one’s emotions and over one’s anxiety were explored. Fifty-one younger adults (M = 21.43, SD = 2.88 years) …

Development Of Fabrication Processes For Silicon And Gallium Nitride Photonic Crystal Structures., Satish Yeldandi Jan 2008

Development Of Fabrication Processes For Silicon And Gallium Nitride Photonic Crystal Structures., Satish Yeldandi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Photonic crystals are being extensively investigated due to their capability of controlling the properties of light by confining photons in one, two and three dimensions. The sensitivity of optical properties of photonic crystals to the changes in refractive index at one or more lattice sites makes them potential building blocks of high-sensitivity biosensors. Fabrication of photonic crystals, including crucial steps such as lithography and plasma etching, is very challenging due to the nanoscale features. ICP-RIE is one of the preferred etching techniques because of its good control over the aspect ratio, high etch rates, low surface damage and many other …

The Development Of A Portable Instrumented Indentation System., Jared Michael Tannenbaum Jan 2008

The Development Of A Portable Instrumented Indentation System., Jared Michael Tannenbaum

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Recently, considerable interest in material characterization of thin film systems and small volumes has led to the increased use of instrumented indentation. Capable of providing a material’s hardness and elastic modulus value, many consider instrumented indentation to be a non destructive testing technique. Traditionally, the indentation contact area is calculated based on the known indenter geometry and depth of penetration. This technique employs the use of high precision depth sensors which account for much of the cost associated with instrumented indentation systems. A multiple partial unloading technique needs no such sensor, as the indentation depth itself is not needed. A …

Focal Adhesion Kinase Mediates Caveolin-1 Expression During Epithelial To Mesenchymal Transition: A Novel Pathway Regulating Aspects Of Cell Motility In Cancer., Kelly M. Bailey Jan 2008

Focal Adhesion Kinase Mediates Caveolin-1 Expression During Epithelial To Mesenchymal Transition: A Novel Pathway Regulating Aspects Of Cell Motility In Cancer., Kelly M. Bailey

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Caveolin-1, the protein coat of caveolae membrane invaginations, was originally hypothesized to function solely as a tumor suppressor in human cancers. However, since the early 1990s, caveolin-1 has been found to be up-regulated in a number of metastatic cancers. This expression has been shown to correlate with disease progression and decreases in overall patient survival in some tumor types. Further, caveolin-1 expression is elevated in multi-drug resistant cancer cells and caveolae are thought to participate in the efflux pathway to pump drugs out of these tumor cells. The overall goal of these studies was to examine changes in and regulation …

Seasonal Changes In Diel Cycling Of Dissolved Iron Species In A Coal Mine Drainage Impacted Creek, Daniel B. Harris

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Diel fluctuations of pH, specific conductance and Fe species have been documented in Dillan Creek, a small coal mine-impacted tributary to Deckers Creek, WV. Samples were collected hourly over 16-20 hour periods and analyzed for dissolved Fe(II) and dissolved total Fe using a Hach DR2800 spectrophotometer. Fe(II) concentrations increased during the day and decreased at night during late winter sampling. Sampling conducted in the summer shows an opposite trend with Fe(II) increasing at night and decreasing during the day. Discrepancies between timing of cycles indicate a seasonal variation of controlling mechanisms. In winter, iron cycles are likely controlled by photoreduction …

Identification And Characterization Of The E(Var)3-5 Gene In Drosophila Melanogaster, Pranoti Sahasrabhojane

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The goals of my research project were to clone the E(var)3-5 gene and characterize the lethality of E(var)3-5 mutations. The E(var)3-5 gene was identified by dominant mutations that enhanced PEV of wm4, thus implicating the gene product in promoting a euchromatic chromatin structure (Dorn et al. 1993). These mutations were found to be recessive lethal as well and the lethal phenotype was used to map the E(var)3-5 gene (Dorn et al. 1993; this work). I characterized the lethality of E(var)3-5 mutations and found that lethality in E(var)3-5 hemizygotes is manifested at the pupal stage. I mapped the lethality to a …

Mitigating The Effect Of Covariates In Face Recognition, Richa Singh

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Current face recognition systems capture faces of cooperative individuals in controlled environment as part of the face recognition process. It is therefore possible to control lighting, pose, background, and quality of images. However, in a real world application, we have to deal with both ideal and imperfect data. Performance of current face recognition systems is affected for such non-ideal and challenging cases. This research focuses on designing algorithms to mitigate the effect of covariates in face recognition.;To address the challenge of facial aging, an age transformation algorithm is proposed that registers two face images and minimizes the aging variations. Unlike …

Synthesis Of Polycyclic Aromatics Having Unusual Molecular Architectures Via Cascade Cyclization Reactions Of Enyne -Allenes, Yu-Hsuan Wang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The C2-C6 Schmittel cyclization reaction of the benzannulated enyne-allenes provides an efficient synthetic pathway for the construction of a variety of polycyclic aromatics. By starting from truxenone, the cascade cyclization reactions furnished several unusual and congested polycyclic compounds. The in situ generated enyne-allenes are key intermediates in these cyclization reactions.;A new synthetic approach to 2,2'-disubstituted 1,1'-binaphthyls and related compounds was also successfully developed by using the benzannulated enediynes as precursors. These 1,1'-binaphthyls derivatives can serve as potential BINOL type ligands. The assembly of the enediynyl precursors from three separate aromatic fragments allows the possibility of placing a variety of functional …

The Third 'I': Creating Of The Fictional History Of Marcus Hubbard., Alexander Pawlowski

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In this thesis, you will read how I used a specific actor’s tool of analysis, called “The Three ‘I’s,” to create the character of Marcus Hubbard in WVU’s production of Lillian Hellman’s Another Part of the Forest . This technique consists of using “Investigation,” “Inference” and “Invention” to create a biography of the character. This is done so that the actor may know all of the major events in the character’s life, even those not seemingly important to the story of the play. These events shape the character and give him a foundation for the motivations that make him do …

Aerodynamic Benefits Of Near-Surface-Actuated Circulation Control Blowing Slots For Rotorcraft Use, Gerald M. Angle Ii Jan 2008

Aerodynamic Benefits Of Near-Surface-Actuated Circulation Control Blowing Slots For Rotorcraft Use, Gerald M. Angle Ii

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

One of the most maintenance intensive components of all present-day helicopters is the swash-plate, and its associated control linkages. This mechanism is also the major contributing factor to fatal accidents associated with helicopter flight. However, the swash-plate is an essential component in providing controlled flight, by transmitting the pilot's control-inputs to the main rotor. Another side-effect of using the swash-plate is that it increases the diameter of the main rotor shaft assembly, slightly increasing the total drag of the aircraft. Thus, there are several benefits that could be achieved by removing the swash-plate of the helicopter.;To enable the removal of …
