Biomolecular Shuttles Under Dielectrophoretic Forces, Yongkuk Lee Jan 2008

Biomolecular Shuttles Under Dielectrophoretic Forces, Yongkuk Lee

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Motor proteins and filaments are essential elements in living cells. They are employed in skeletal muscles to generate forces, they transport cargos such as organelles to specific locations in the cells or they reorganize themselves to change a cell's structure. Moreover, motor proteins and filaments use hydrolysis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) as chemical fuel to generate mechanical movement in their interaction. Understanding the behavior of these enticed nano-sized machines and their properties, yet to be mimicked and synthesized by humans is very important to the future development of transport in nanoscale. Thus far, researchers succeeded in demonstrating the interaction of …

Exchange Of The Feminine: Representations Of Multiple Marginality In Contemporary West Virginia Fiction., David E. Wilson Jan 2008

Exchange Of The Feminine: Representations Of Multiple Marginality In Contemporary West Virginia Fiction., David E. Wilson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study engages the short stories and novels of three contemporary fiction writers: acclaimed native West Virginians Denise Giardina and Breece D’J Pancake, and Laura Albert, a New York City native who, for a time, published under the pseudonym JT LeRoy. Using West Virginia as their settings, these authors have created Mountain State characters whose stratified marginality in heteronormative Appalachian society stems from their failure to meet traditional expectations of gender and sexuality. Those multiply marginal characters in West Virginia fiction who best establish a general accord do so through benign public personae, ancillary labor occupations and supportive kinship roles. …

Lead-Based Residential Paint In Soils: A Dissolution And A Spatial Analysis Prevention Approach., Sofia Campos Gonzalez Jan 2008

Lead-Based Residential Paint In Soils: A Dissolution And A Spatial Analysis Prevention Approach., Sofia Campos Gonzalez

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

For many years, lead was used to make the white pigment used in residential paints. Although lead paint was finally banned for residential use in 1978, the environmental legacy of contaminated residences and adjacent soils remains. Lead poisoning continues to be a major public health issue. Those at most risk for lead poisoning are children, especially those who 1) live in low quality housing, or those undergoing unsafe restoration or repainting jobs, that were built before 1978, 2) have parents with lead-based hobbies or occupations, and 3) live near lead mining or processing facilities. Other sources of exposure include inner-city …

Which: A Stochastic Best-First Search Learner., Zachery A. Milton Jan 2008

Which: A Stochastic Best-First Search Learner., Zachery A. Milton

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Rule-based learners search a version space of combinations of features. Starting at “false”, features can be added using disjunctions, conjunctions and negations which can combine to some top-most “true” node that covers all possible examples. A complete search of all possible combinations can be too slow, due to the size of the space, or too error prone, due to noise in the space. When complete search fails, stochastic search may be a useful alternative. For example, the TAR3 “treatment learner” is a stochastic rule learner that leaps around random parts of the version space. TAR favors the construction of tiny …

Muted Group Theory And U.S. Politics: Examining Third Parties And Their Supporters., Meredith A. Mitchell Jan 2008

Muted Group Theory And U.S. Politics: Examining Third Parties And Their Supporters., Meredith A. Mitchell

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

With many more young adult voters identifying themselves as independent voters or members of a third party, it is hard to believe third party candidates have not found more significant or lasting success in the U.S. politics. To investigate this phenomenon, Muted Group Theory is presented as one explanation and evidence was sought to determine if third party supporters are a muted group in U.S. politics. Participants included young adult voters from a large Mid-Atlantic university who responded to several statements about third parties and identified their political affiliation. Differences were expected to exist among the different political groups, yet …

Effects Of Aggregate Grading And Admixtures/Fillers On Fresh And Hardened Properties Of Self-Consolidating Concrete, Arka Bhattacharya Jan 2008

Effects Of Aggregate Grading And Admixtures/Fillers On Fresh And Hardened Properties Of Self-Consolidating Concrete, Arka Bhattacharya

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Self-consolidating concrete (SCC) is becoming a popular material in the concrete industry, due to ease of placement in congested reinforcement, reduced labor and equipment, nonsegregating character, and excellent surface finish. In spite of its several advantages, SCC is exceedingly sensitive to aggregate grading, size, admixtures, and filler contents. Though many studies have been conducted on rheological behavior of SCC, there is limited information on effects of aggregate size, grading, mineral admixture types, and fillers on durability, shrinkage and cracking properties.;In this study 17 SCC mixtures were initially developed using local aggregates, fly ash, slag, limestone fillers, commercial silica fume, viscosity-modifying …

Molecular Prediction Of Drug Response Using Machine Learning Methods, Zhenyu Ding Jan 2008

Molecular Prediction Of Drug Response Using Machine Learning Methods, Zhenyu Ding

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of chemotherapy will rely on the ability to accurately predict an individual cancer patient's chemosensitivity to certain drugs. One approach to this issue has focused on genomic and proteomic profiling. While previous work has focused on genomic profiling, few studies have explored the correlation of proteomic profiles with drug sensitivity. Meanwhile, a novel algorithm is needed to integrate both protein and gene expression, which is important to systematically understand fundamental chemosensitivity mechanisms. In this study, we sought to explore whether proteomic signatures of untreated cancer cell lines could accurately predict their chemosensitivity. Furthermore, we developed …

Effects Of Induced Acute Phase Response In Ewes On Early Embryo Survival, Tina Lynn Dow Jan 2008

Effects Of Induced Acute Phase Response In Ewes On Early Embryo Survival, Tina Lynn Dow

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Early pregnant ewes, 5/6 day post coitus (dpc) were used as a model to study early embryonic loss via gram-positive bacterial infections, such as mastitis. Ewes 5/6 dpc were injected with a gram-positive bacteria cell wall component, peptidoglycan-polysaccharide (PG-PS), to induce an innate immune system acute phase response (APR). The induction of the APR and its reactant molecules, such as cytokines and acute phase proteins (APP), were initiated to study their effects on embryonic loss. Twenty Suffolk ewes were synchronized for estrus and bred by fertile rams. At 4 dpc ewes were anesthetized and catheters were surgically placed in the …

This research presents experimental results for the application of Machine Vision (MV) techniques to address the problem of target detection and tracking. The main objective is the design of a prototype "UAV" surveillance environment to emulate real-life conditions. The model environment for this experiment consists of a target simulated by a small electric train system, located at "ground" level, and a MV camera mounted on a motion-based apparatus located directly above the model setup. This system is meant to be a non-flying mockup of an aerial robot retrofitted with a MV sensor. Therefore, the final design is a two degree-of-freedom …

Reinforcement Learning-Based Control Design For Load Frequency Control, Sara Eftekharnejad Jan 2008

Reinforcement Learning-Based Control Design For Load Frequency Control, Sara Eftekharnejad

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Energy balance in electric power systems is continuously disrupted by constant demand changes due to customers' switching in and out, or loss of generating units. Load frequency control (LFC) is very essential for interconnected power systems in order to maintain the energy balance which is assessed through the Area Control Error, a signal that is made up of deviations from their nominal values of the system frequency and power area interchanges. Each balancing authority is responsible for its own energy balance in accordance with North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) standards.;This thesis presents a novel approach to the LFC problem. …

Estimate At Completion For Construction Projects, Yi Fang Jan 2008

Estimate At Completion For Construction Projects, Yi Fang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Construction projects are complex and risky because there are so many variables that may affect their profitability especially in terms of their cost and schedule. The information provided by the measurement of progress, the expended dollars and the forecasting of the outcome of a construction project will provide valuable information as to how to proceed, the impacts, corrective action required, and the trade-offs necessary to maximize profits and minimize risk. This study focused on using different indicators to measure the schedule performance and cost performance of construction projects, and to predict final cost and duration by the moving average and …

Development And Analysis Of Lithologically Controlled Regional Curves Of Hydraulic Geometry For Appalachian Mountain Streams, Ridge And Valley Physiographic Province, Pennsylvania, Matthew S. Finkenbinder Jan 2008

Development And Analysis Of Lithologically Controlled Regional Curves Of Hydraulic Geometry For Appalachian Mountain Streams, Ridge And Valley Physiographic Province, Pennsylvania, Matthew S. Finkenbinder

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Regional curves of hydraulic geometry are frequently constructed for physiographic provinces, regions that have similar geologic structure, climate, and geomorphic history. As a result, the factors controlling channel form are more alike than would be the case for streams across widespread geographic regions. However, geology can vary significantly within a physiographic province. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to determine if regional curves would be more precise predictors of hydraulic geometry if developed for geologically similar streams within a physiographic province. A total of 34 reaches on six ungauged mountain streams in the Ridge and Valley Physiographic Province of …

Non-Apoptotic Roles Of Caspase-8 And Caspase-2, Brooke M. Helfer Jan 2008

Non-Apoptotic Roles Of Caspase-8 And Caspase-2, Brooke M. Helfer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Caspases are proteolytic enzymes involved in committing apoptosis, but through the studies of knockout phenotypes in mice and Drosophila , it has been speculated that caspases might possess additional non-apoptotic functions.;We have found non-apoptotic functions for caspase-8 in both normal and tumor cell lines. Specifically, we found that caspase-8 promotes cell migration, adhesion, and Rac activation. Subsequently, we also found that caspase-8 interacts with the p85 subunit of PI3K. Accompanying stimulation of motility with epidermal growth factor the phosphorylation of caspase-8 on tyrosine-380 is induced and this phosphorylation allows for p85 interaction, cell migration, adhesion, and Rac activation. Caspase-8 also …

Power System Damping Controllers Design Using A Backstepping Control Technique, Ali Karimi Jan 2008

Power System Damping Controllers Design Using A Backstepping Control Technique, Ali Karimi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The objective of this dissertation is to design and coordinate controllers that will enhance transient stability of power systems subject to large disturbances. Two specific classes of controllers have been investigated, the first one is a type of supplementary signals added to the excitation systems of the generating units, and the second is a type of damping signal added to a device called a Static Var Compensator that can be placed at any node in the system. To address a wide range of operating conditions, a nonlinear control design technique, called backstepping control, is used. While these two types of …

Non-Redundant Roles Of E(Spl) Proteins During Drosophila Neurogenesis, Jee-Eun Kim Jan 2008

Non-Redundant Roles Of E(Spl) Proteins During Drosophila Neurogenesis, Jee-Eun Kim

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Enhancer of split Complex (E(spl)C) in Drosophila melanogaster encodes seven bHLH repressors that serve as the final effectors of the highly conserved Notch signaling pathway during the process of cell fate specification. These E(spl) proteins have been considered to be functionally redundant because of their structural similarity, and the observation that over-expression of individual E(spl) members leads to neural hypoplasia, in general. And additional compounding factor is that loss-of function alleles in individual E(spl) members have been unavailable. However, individual E(spl) members exhibit inordinate conservation through Drosophila evolution and are differentially expressed, findings which challenge the premise of functional …

Analysis Of Timekeeper Implicates Antagonism Between Ck2 And Pp2a During Drosophila Neurogenesis, Ezgi Kunttas Jan 2008

Analysis Of Timekeeper Implicates Antagonism Between Ck2 And Pp2a During Drosophila Neurogenesis, Ezgi Kunttas

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

It is increasingly becoming apparent that dynamic control of phosphorylation and dephosphorylation underlies the proper spatial and temporal activities of many signaling circuits including Notch (N). Emerging evidence suggests that protein kinase CK2 mediates the effects of N during Drosophila eye and bristle development via phosphorylation of E(spl) repressors. Previous studies in our laboratory shown that reducing levels/activity of CK2 elicits rough eyes due to excess R8 founders and ectopic and split bristles due to excess SOP's, both indicative of impaired lateral inhibition and N signaling. While these studies implicate a role for CK2 in the regulation of E(spl), the …

Flame Retardants For Abs And Abs-Matrix Wood-Plastic Composites, Tze-Wei Liu Jan 2008

Flame Retardants For Abs And Abs-Matrix Wood-Plastic Composites, Tze-Wei Liu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The goal of this study was to recycle acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) into wood plastic composites (WPCs). One major concern in this application is flammability. Thus, halogenated and non-halogenated flame retardants (FRs) were investigated. FRs were mixed with ABS using an internal mixer or an extruder, and samples were molded using a hot press or an injection molding machine. Mechanical properties were assessed by flexural tests, and flammability was measured by UL-94 type tests and limiting oxygen index. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and FTIR were also performed in order to understand the decomposition behavior of ABS-based WPCs.;Mechanical results showed that adding wood flour …

Application Of Multi-Agents To Power Distribution Systems, Koushaly Nareshkumar

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The electric power system has become a very complicated network at present because of re-structuring and the penetration of distributed energy resources. In addition, due to increasing demand for power, issues such as transmission congestion have made the power system stressed. A single fault can lead to massive cascading effects, affecting the power supply and power quality. An overall solution for these issues can be obtained by a new artificial intelligent mechanism called the multi-agent system. A multi-agent system is a collection of agents, which senses the environmental changes and acts diligently on the environment in order to achieve its …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Ultrasound extraction was used to compare the accelerated release rates of arsenic and selenium from pulverized rocks associated with mountain-top removal/valley fill method of coal mining. The kinetic studies demonstrated that the release rates are dependent on rock lithology as well as the total concentrations found in the rocks. Se (IV) was found to be stable under ultrasonic irradiation (200 W/cm2) but As (III) was quickly oxidized to As (V). Rocks such as BT700 were found to have more Se (IV) compared to Se (VI) and others such as BT571 were found to contain more Se (VI) than Se (IV).;Continuous …

Efficiency Optimization And Control Of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Brushless Motors In Three-Phase Pulse Width Modulated Voltage Source Inverter Drives, Olusegun Richard Solomon Jan 2008

Efficiency Optimization And Control Of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Brushless Motors In Three-Phase Pulse Width Modulated Voltage Source Inverter Drives, Olusegun Richard Solomon

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In high performance drives where it is desirable to exploit the usefulness of reluctance torque and machine saliency, permanent magnet synchronous brushless motors are machines of choice. However, speed control of these machines especially in the flux weakening region becomes more complex due to the non-linear coupling among the winding currents as well as the nonlinearity present in the torque. While numerous research efforts in the past have considered control and efficiency improvements of induction motors, and synchronous motors with field windings, research efforts in developing an efficiency optimization and control strategy applicable to all salient-type permanent magnet synchronous brushless …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Kava-kava is a widely available and used herbal medicine that is not regulated in many countries, including the United States. There are many questions concerning kava-kava's stimulus properties, potential for therapeutic use, and potential for abuse. Although there is evidence that kava may possess some anxiolytic properties, the supplement's mechanism of action and the extent to which it may serve as an alternative to pharmaceutical anxiolytics are unknown. To date, there is no research examining whether kava shares discriminative-stimulus properties with a standard pharmaceutical anxiolytic such as chlordiazepoxide (CDP). The current study compared different doses of kava in two groups …

Heuristics For The Dynamic Facility Layout Problem With Unequal Area Departments, Artak Hakobyan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The facility layout problem (FLP) is a well researched problem of finding positions of departments on a plant floor such that departments do not overlap and some objective(s) is (are) optimized. In this dissertation, the FLP with unequal area rectangular shaped departments is considered, when material flows between departments change during the planning horizon. This problem is known as the dynamic FLP. The change in material flows between pairs of departments in consecutive periods may require rearrangements of departments during the planning horizon in order to keep material handling costs low. The objective of our problem is to minimize the …
