Strategies Of Prevention: Extending The Concept Of Preventive War And Understanding Its Implications, Steven T. Walker
Strategies Of Prevention: Extending The Concept Of Preventive War And Understanding Its Implications, Steven T. Walker
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation contributes to the literature on prevention in two specific ways. First, it broadens the concept of preventive war, developing the idea that dominant states have a choice when it comes to dealing with rising challengers. The choice is not a dichotomous variable of either war or no war. Instead, there is a range of choices that decision makers within the dominant state have at their disposal. This dissertation examines the relationship---over time---between two conflictual states, one in relative decline and the other in relative ascendance, and studies the response of the dominant but declining power. Second, I focus …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Co-teaching in inclusive, content classrooms is becoming increasingly more popular as schools work toward the inclusion of significantly more students with special learning needs in the general education environment. Inherent in every classroom environment is the expectation of teacher-student interactions. It is often the relationship between the teacher and the student that provides opportunities for student achievement and success. The daily interactions that occur between teachers and their students set the tone for the successes and failures that may be realized as a result. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to explore and identify both the context and frequency …

Feature Preserving Continuous Level-Of-Detail For Terrain Rendering, Lucas Jay Shinkovich
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Despite the vast processing power of modern GPUs, rendering terrain geometry at sufficient frame rates is still a very difficult task. This is mainly due to the large terrain data that must be managed, displayed and modified at high frame rates. While traditional level-of-detail algorithms for terrain utilize most of the CPU and a fraction of the GPU, our algorithm exploits the parallel processing capabilities of the GPU. We represent the terrain geometry as a set of geometry images which allows us to apply image processing techniques to preserve terrain features during level-of-detail transitions and to render terrain that has …

Motivation In Sport: Bridging Historical And Contemporary Theory Through A Qualitative Approach, Daniel J. Leidl
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
From intrinsic and extrinsic motivation to attributions and goal orientation, theory and study related to motivation in sport abound. However, theorists such as Adler (Adler, 1998), Frankl (1984), and Maslow (Maslow, 1962) detail broader motivational frameworks that focus on a human impulse to derive meaning and purpose by extending beyond the self. While such theories take prominent positions within psychology, there applicability to sport has seemingly been overlooked. In an effort to explore more traditional motivational constructs in sport, a qualitative analysis of elite lacrosse coaches (n=7) was conducted. Through semi-structured interviews, coaches shared their motivation to coach and how …
