Design And Implementation Of A Multithreaded Softcore Processor With Tightly Coupled Hardware Real-Time Operating System, Terance Prabhasara Wijesinghe Dec 2008

Design And Implementation Of A Multithreaded Softcore Processor With Tightly Coupled Hardware Real-Time Operating System, Terance Prabhasara Wijesinghe

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The objective of this thesis is to design and implement an FPGA-based softcore processor with hardware Real Time Operating System (RTOS).;RTOSs provide an abstracted environment on top of the hardware with different mechanisms to simplify and coordinate the behavior of the system. Software mechanisms including multithreading, semaphores, timers, interrupts, etc. consume large amounts of CPU time which increases overhead and contributes to the degradation of the performance. In order to offload this overhead, RTOSs with hardware acceleration have been a research topic with considerable interest. Most research works are focused on the design of a hardware RTOS external to the …

Evaluation Of Weaning Regimen And Seminal Plasma Biology On Reproductive Management In Cattle, John Fredrick Odhiambo Dec 2008

Evaluation Of Weaning Regimen And Seminal Plasma Biology On Reproductive Management In Cattle, John Fredrick Odhiambo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The goal of any reproductive management system in cattle is to ensure that cows breed at the earliest opportune time and maintain their pregnancy to term. However, delayed resumption of postpartum ovarian cyclic activity in primiparous beef cows and pregnancy losses in dairy cows continue to impede progress in obtaining sound reproductive efficiency in these species. Three studies were designed to test the following hypotheses: (1) Does removal of lactational stress in beef cows by early weaning of calves improve cow energy profile and postpartum reproductive performance? (2) Does artificial insemination (AI) with adjunctive seminal plasma (SP) or transforming growth …

Video Modeling Via Implicit Motion Representations, Yunfei Zheng Dec 2008

Video Modeling Via Implicit Motion Representations, Yunfei Zheng

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Video modeling refers to the development of analytical representations for explaining the intensity distribution in video signals. Based on the analytical representation, we can develop algorithms for accomplishing particular video-related tasks. Therefore video modeling provides us a foundation to bridge video data and related-tasks. Although there are many video models proposed in the past decades, the rise of new applications calls for more efficient and accurate video modeling approaches.;Most existing video modeling approaches are based on explicit motion representations, where motion information is explicitly expressed by correspondence-based representations (i.e., motion velocity or displacement). Although it is conceptually simple, the limitations …

Simple Strategy-Based Technique To Reduce Emissions From Scr-Equipped Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine Over Different Engine-Out Calibrations, Michelangelo Ardanese

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Heavy-duty diesel engine manufacturers, regulators and operators in Europe and US have judged the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system to be the most suitable exhaust aftertreatment technology to meet the Euro V and US 2010 emission standards for oxides of nitrogen (NOx). The choice of the SCR as the exhaust aftertreatment system has been accompanied by engine calibrations with higher engine-out NOx emissions. Temporary deactivation of the exhaust aftertreatment device, due to malfunction or disrepair could result in excessively high NOx emissions at the tailpipe. Therefore, there is a need to evaluate alternative engine calibrations that would limit in-use NOx …

Evaluation Of Skin Factor From Single-Rate Gas Well Test, Fahad M. Al Mutairi Dec 2008

Evaluation Of Skin Factor From Single-Rate Gas Well Test, Fahad M. Al Mutairi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Skin factor is generally used as an indicator for well flow efficiency and the criterion for performing stimulation treatment to improve well productivity. This skin factor is a composite factor and should be divided into its different components in order to evaluate near-wellbore damage. Therefore, the total skin factor obtained from a gas well pressure transient test has two primary components, rate-independent and rate-dependent skins. Both of these skin factors can be determined directly from the interpretation of pressure transient well tests if several transient tests are performed at different rates. However, the multi-rate tests are time consuming and expensive. …

Ecology Of A Central Appalachian White-Tailed Deer Herd At Low Density, Shawn M. Crimmins Dec 2008

Ecology Of A Central Appalachian White-Tailed Deer Herd At Low Density, Shawn M. Crimmins

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are the most abundant big game species in North America and serve as the dominant herbivore in the majority of the Appalachian region. Despite the abundance of research conducted on this species, relatively little is known of the ecology of white-tailed deer occurring at low densities. Our study population experienced a 75% decline in population density and a three-fold increase in habitat disturbance via timber harvests between 2002 and 2005. From May 2006 to April 2008 I examined the home-range, survival, and herbivory patterns of a central Appalachian white-tailed deer herd that has recently experienced both …

Optimization Of Bit Interleaved Coded Modulation Using Genetic Algorithms, Raghu Chaitanya Doppalapudi Dec 2008

Optimization Of Bit Interleaved Coded Modulation Using Genetic Algorithms, Raghu Chaitanya Doppalapudi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Modern wireless communication systems must be optimized with respect to both bandwidth efficiency and energy efficiency. A common approach to achieve these goals is to use multi-level modulation such as quadrature-amplitude modulation (QAM) for bandwidth efficiency and an error-control code for energy efficiency. In benign additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels, Ungerboeck proposed trellis-coded modulation (TCM), which combines modulation and coding into a joint operation. However, in fading channels, it is important to maximize diversity. As shown by Zehavi, diversity is maximized by performing coding and modulation separately and interleaving bits that are passed from the encoder to the modulator. …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Using pest species in initial studies of pentosidine (Ps) aging research for birds may be the catalyst to discovering more effective population control strategies for pest, invasive, and hard to manage birds. Pentosidine is an irreversible, stable, fluorescent, collagen cross-link, created through the Maillard reaction, which has been found to accumulate throughout the lifetime of an organism in various body parts such as skin, lens crystalline, and dura matter. Pentosidine assays are more accurate at determining the age of adult birds in comparison to plumage coloration, eye and mouth color, feather wear, and molt sequences due to the discovery that …

Software Process Control Without Calibration, Oussama El-Rawas Dec 2008

Software Process Control Without Calibration, Oussama El-Rawas

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Software process control is important for large enterprise since it is essential for software project management. Boehm [10, 12--15, 20] argues that the best way to do software process control is reusing old proven models (e.g. COCOMO for effort, COQUALMO for defects, etc) while tuning them to local data in order to obtain accurate estimates. This however suggests that historic data is available related to the use of these models in previous software projects. This is not the case, as the availability of relevant historic data related to the use of the above models in a specific software environment is …

Complex Stimulus Control In Humans: Merging Functional And Equivalence Classes, Harold E. Lobo Dec 2008

Complex Stimulus Control In Humans: Merging Functional And Equivalence Classes, Harold E. Lobo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation investigated the merging of functional and equivalence classes produced by training responding to either simple or conditional discriminations. Experiment 1 targeted the acquisition of three three-member equivalence classes featuring class-specific reinforcers and three three-member functional classes each controlling the occurrence of a nonsense vocal response. Four female college students completed testing for the targeted stimulus classes. Two subjects demonstrated class-consistent emergent responding, but only one of them maintained class-consistent responding across repeated testing. This student withdrew from the experiment before class merging was arranged. Experiment 2 simplified and expedited the procedures for producing independent emergent classes. Four female …
