The Intrusiveness Of Sensor-Suit Components On The Postures Associated With Performing Repeated Whole-Body Manual Lifting Tasks, Lauren Amanda Visnansky

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Ergonomics can be defined as the responsibility to ensure that the demands of a job do not exceed the capabilities of a worker (Garg, Chaffin, and Herrin, 1978). Evaluating physiological demands on workers, particularly individuals performing highly varied tasks or monitoring their work in the field, can be a complex problem. Using on-person sensors to record kinematic and physiological measurements throughout extended is one proposed method by which to collect data necessary to evaluate the demands placed on the workers. In order to assess the efficacy of the data that would be collected, it is critical to evaluate the intrusive …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

When entering cartridge case exhibits into the Integrated Ballistics Identification System (IBIS®), examiners have the ability to manually manipulate three parameters: lighting intensity, ring selection and exhibit orientation. User guidelines for these settings are subjective, and the effect of examiner variation is largely unknown. If examiner variation negatively affects the returned correlation scores, the ability of the system to return true positives will be compromised. By entering cartridge cases into IBIS® 88 separate times, using 88 different combinations of parameter settings, the effect of these variables was determined. Analysis of variance testing revealed that no variable has a statistically significant …

Microrna Regulation Of Kruppel-Like Factor 4 In Breast Cancer., Chen-Chung Lin Jan 2011

Microrna Regulation Of Kruppel-Like Factor 4 In Breast Cancer., Chen-Chung Lin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Kruppel-like factor 4 (KLF4) is a transcription factor regulating cell growth and differentiation. In normal tissues, Kruppel-like factor 4 (KLF4) is typically expressed in post-mitotic epithelial cells and functions in epithelial cell differentiation. However, in the premalignant dysplastic lesions and invasive cancers of specific human tumor types such as skin cancer and breast cancer, KLF4 mRNA and protein are upregulated in proliferating cells. When KLF4 misexpressed in the basal keratinocytes of mouse skin, KLF4 can rapidly induce neoplastic progression to squamous cell carcinoma-like lesions. Consistent with its preferential expression in post-mitotic cells in vivo, KLF4 is likewise induced upon growth-arrest …

Adolescents Vs. Adults: Does The Criminal Justice System Punish Youth More Severely Than Adults For The Same Type Of Crime, Sheena L. Bowman Jan 2011

Adolescents Vs. Adults: Does The Criminal Justice System Punish Youth More Severely Than Adults For The Same Type Of Crime, Sheena L. Bowman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Understanding the disparity in the amount of punishment between youth and adults, for violent and non-violent criminal activity, remains a matter of theoretical debate. In the present study, the research employs deterrence and labeling theory, through a life course theoretical framework, to assess the extent to which the punishments for violent and non-violent crimes follow different trajectories. The deterrence theory posits an individual will refrain and deter from future offending if the consequence of the crime committed outweighs the actual crime itself. The labeling theory focuses on the labels applied to an individual, and if that label influences the individual's …

Role Of "Caax" Protein Processing In The Retina, Jeffrey Rowan Christiansen Jan 2011

Role Of "Caax" Protein Processing In The Retina, Jeffrey Rowan Christiansen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Prenylation is a posttranslational modification which adds a lipid, either a farnesyl or geranylgeranyl group, to the C-terminal cysteine of proteins ending in a "CAAX" motif. Two additional steps referred to as "CAAX" protein processing follow prenylation. First, the terminal three amino acids are cleaved by the endoprotease RAS converting enzyme1 (RCE1), then isoprenylcysteine methyltransferase (ICMT) adds a methyl group to the cysteine. While it is clear that the addition of the prenyl group is required for the association of proteins with membranes, the function of proteolysis and methylation is not obvious. Two lines of evidence suggest a critical role …
