Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The widespread commercialization of solid-oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and solid-oxide electrolyte cells (SOECs) is primarily limited by material degradation issues related to the required high temperature operation (>800°C). Applications of stabilized zirconia based electrolytes, which are the most commonly used oxide ion conductors, have been limited to this high temperature regime due to its low oxygen ion conductivity below 800°C. Solid electrolytes made of the BIMEVOX compositional family of materials (Bi2MexV 1-xO5.5-delta where Me=Cu, Co, Mg, Ni, Fe...) exhibit high oxide ionic conductivity similar to YSZ at a low temperature (300--600°C). Among these materials copper-substituted bismuth vanadate (Bi2V0.9Cu0.1O5.35, BICUVOX), …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Naturally fractured reservoirs (NFR) have been receiving more attention than ever since the beginning of the last decade due to various reasons. The current understanding is not sufficient to achieve a favorable recovery factor due to the complexity associated with the fracture characterization and the dynamic behavior of the fractured system. The majority of the fractured reservoirs are developed. Therefore, before proceeding into secondary or possibly tertiary recovery processes a thorough understanding must be reached to avoid undesirable results. The huge reserve volume present in fractured oil and gas reservoirs motivate engineers, researchers, and geoscientists to exert additional efforts to …

Subcellular Distribution Of Apoptosis Associated Speck-Like Protein Mediates Inflammasome Assembly: A Novel Mechanism In The Regulation Of Interleukin-1beta Release, Nicole B. Bryan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Inflammation is an essential component of the innate immune defense against pathogens. The process of inflammation is mediated by the rapid release of intercellular mediators, which function in the activation and recruitment of cellular components of both the innate and adaptive immune system. However, dysregulation of this process, resulting in sustained inflammation is the underlying cause of a number of common pathological conditions. These include hereditary autoinflammatory disorders, gout, arthritis, asthma, and cancer. Furthermore, IL-1beta is a key component of the tumor microenvironment, which serves to recruit tumor-associated macrophages, promote angiogenesis, enhance NF-kB activation, and suppress anti-tumor immunity. The studies …

Parental Influence On Physical Activity Of 7 To 9 Year Olds., Janie Marie Leary

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends a minimum of 60 minutes of physical activity every day for children. These recommendations are based on the evidence that physical activity has health benefits beyond weight control. Despite these benefits, most children are not taking part in the recommended levels of physical activity. Understanding factors influencing children's physical activity is important to developing successful intervention programs. Intrapersonal and interpersonal influences were found to have the greatest impact on child physical activity. The extent to which each factor predicts physical activity as children age is less understood. Furthermore, not every developmental age …

Effects Of Acute And Repeated Administration Of Diazepam On Delay Discounting In Lewis And Fischer 344 Rats, Sally L. Huskinson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Impulsive choice is often examined using a delay-discounting procedure where choice is between two reinforcers of different magnitudes presented at varying delays. Individual discounting rates can be influenced by many factors including strain differences and drug effects. Lewis (LEW) and Fischer 344 (F344) rats have behavioral and neurochemical differences relevant to delay discounting and were used to examine effects of acute and repeated diazepam administration on impulsive choice. Consistent with previous literature, larger-reinforcer choice decreased as a function of increasing delays for all rats, and steeper discounting functions occurred for LEW relative to F344 rats. Acute and repeated diazepam administration …

Water Gas Shift Reaction Catalysis Promoted By Selective Sorption Of Carbon Dioxide: Microreactor Experiments, Ramanjaneyulu Katta Jan 2011

Water Gas Shift Reaction Catalysis Promoted By Selective Sorption Of Carbon Dioxide: Microreactor Experiments, Ramanjaneyulu Katta

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Production of hydrogen via the water-gas shift (WGS) reaction normally requires multiple reaction steps followed by CO2 separation. However, in-situ removal of CO2 via the carbonation reaction between CaO and CO2 provides the opportunity to combine WGS and separation reactions into a single unit. Consequently, the need for heat exchangers between catalyst beds as well as the absorption and stripping units for CO2 removal can be eliminated.;In this study, a commercial high-temperature-shift (HTS) catalyst, Fe 2O3/Cr2O3/CuO is used. Calcium oxide (CaO) and calcium oxide incorporated with calcium aluminate (Ca12Al 14O33) are used as sorbents for CO2 capture. The CaO/Ca12Al14O33 sorbent …

Vegetative Compatibility In Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi, Sonia Purin Jan 2011

Vegetative Compatibility In Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi, Sonia Purin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The process of anastomosis promotes interconnectivity between hyphal branches during formation of a mycelial network and between fungal colonies. Self anastomosis involves fusion within a mycelium from a germinating spore, and this process is common in all species of fungi. Non-self anastomosis involves fusion between hyphae from different spores or colonies and allows lateral gene transfer, but this process is much rarer. Anastomosis in Ascomycota is well studied, but little is known for asexual arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in Glomeromycota. Because AMF are obligate symbionts in plant roots, studies have focused on anastomosis in asymbiotic hyphae of germinating spores. To …

Go-Ahead Men: Yankee Westerners Test Masculine Bonds In The Early American Republic, Charlotte Cathy Rodabaugh Jan 2011

Go-Ahead Men: Yankee Westerners Test Masculine Bonds In The Early American Republic, Charlotte Cathy Rodabaugh

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Colonial New England fathers normally launched sons' careers, often aided by other male relatives. However, economic developments in the early American republic rendered sons' expectations less sure even as Americans began celebrating the concept of the self-made man and pressured young men to distinguish themselves. Even worse, they asserted that success or failure signaled more about the man than about his particular circumstances. This study delves into some close male relationships through which were negotiated these tensions between cultural expectations and reality. Scholars describe the rise of a distinctly Northern, middle-class manhood, but this project isolates how the relationships that …
