Development Of High Volume Fly Ash And/ Or Slag Modified Concrete And Geopolymer Concrete As Sustainable Construction Materials, Soumya Sundar Chowdhury
Development Of High Volume Fly Ash And/ Or Slag Modified Concrete And Geopolymer Concrete As Sustainable Construction Materials, Soumya Sundar Chowdhury
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Although cement constitutes only about 10% to 15% of the total weight of concrete, it accounts for 6% of global CO2 emissions. The other emissions from cement plants are: particulate matter, CO, NOx, SOx, total hydrocarbon, and the major wastes are cement kiln dust and water. Unfortunately cement is also an energy intensive material as 1 metric tonne of cement requires 1 million MJ of energy. Therefore, a large reduction in cement content in concrete by replacing it with other cementitious materials can make concrete a greener and sustainable material. Industrial by-products such as fly ash and ground granulated blast …

Temporal Changes In Soil Carbon Concentration And Quality In A Reclaimed Minesoil Chronosequence, Sriroop Chaudhuri
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations have increased significantly over the last half century causing erratic changes in global climate and the ecological balance of the earth. With proper land management practices, reclaimed minesoils can act as CO2- sinks, thus contributing to the terrestrial carbon sequestration efforts to mitigate effects of increased atmospheric CO2 concentrations. The objective of this research was to determine temporal changes in soil organic carbon (SOC) geochemistry and contents in a reclaimed minesoil chronosequence. The study area comprised four reclaimed minesoils in Monongalia County, West Virginia, with time since reclamation ranging between 2 to 21 years. A …
Childhood Obesity In Context: Examining The Role Of Ecological Factors Related To Childhood Obesity Among West Virginia's Youth, Stephanie S. Frost
Childhood Obesity In Context: Examining The Role Of Ecological Factors Related To Childhood Obesity Among West Virginia's Youth, Stephanie S. Frost
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Nearly one third of youth in the United States are overweight or obese and rates are disproportionately higher among rural youth. These rates are cause for alarm given the many short- and long-term consequences of childhood obesity. A growing body of research has begun to explore how factors outside the individual might influence obesity and obesity-related behaviors. Guided by ecological frameworks, this research has demonstrated that factors such as the socioeconomic status of the community, access to physical activity opportunities, and quality of the community food environment may contribute to this epidemic. However, much of the research to date has …
Mechano-Enzymatic Pretreatment Of Lignocellulosic Biomass, Bibu Philip George
Mechano-Enzymatic Pretreatment Of Lignocellulosic Biomass, Bibu Philip George
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Recalcitrance of lignocellulosic cell wall is a major hurdle that needs to be disrupted for biochemical refinery to be successful. Pretreatment of lignocellulosic materials play a key role for the conversion of lignocellulosic feed stocks to fermentable sugars. At present, various pretreatment technologies mainly achieved by empirical methods are available for the production of sugars from lignocellulosic polysaccharides. These methods depend largely upon the "demolition" of the cell wall by strong chemicals or using high energy input. As a result, these processes release "smaller compounds" as by-products or end products which inhibits downstream fermentation of monomeric sugars.;This project is a …
Influencing Kidney Health And Function In Young Female Rats Through Dietary Alterations, Joseph Christopher Gigliotti
Influencing Kidney Health And Function In Young Female Rats Through Dietary Alterations, Joseph Christopher Gigliotti
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The occurrence of kidney failure in the US has drastically increased over the past decade. The decline in health associated with chronic kidney disease can be prevented if detected early in disease progression. However, substantial damage has often occurred before detection of renal disease is possible. Therefore, disease prevention (as in all diseases) is the optimal treatment.;In regards to the kidneys, dietary habits can have a profound influence on the function and overall kidney health. This is particularly evident in female rats due to their susceptibility to diet induced renal disease. In female rats, the initiation of chronic kidney disease …
Diet Induced Alterations And Distribution Of Indices Of Lysine Catabolism, Stephanie K. Gatrell
Diet Induced Alterations And Distribution Of Indices Of Lysine Catabolism, Stephanie K. Gatrell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Lysine is thought to be oxidized primarily by lysine alpha-ketoglutarate reductase (LKR) and saccharopine dehydrogenase (SDH), which are restricted to the mitochondrial matrix. Lysine is presumably transported through the plasma membrane by isoforms(s) of a cationic amino acid transporter (CAT). Although the mechanism(s) of lysine transport through the inner mitochondrial membrane is not known, it is presumptively transported by one or both mitochondrial "ornithine transporters" (ORC-1/ORC-2). Tissue distribution of LKR and the mechanism(s) responsible for alterations in hepatic lysine catabolism in swine are unclear. Also, the roles of the alternative pathways of lysine degradation, the L-amino acid oxidase-dependent (LAAO), in …

Effects Of A Worry Induction On Heart Rate, Emotion And Self-Reported Arousal In Younger And Older Adults, Christine E. Gould
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Anxiety disorders are the most frequently-diagnosed psychological disorder among older adults, with the exception of cognitive disorders. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is one of the most prevalent anxiety disorders of older adults. However, the actual experience of worry, the hallmark symptom of GAD, is not well-understood among older adults. In the present study, older and younger adults participated in an experimental induction of worry or pleasant recall. After controlling for baseline age differences, older and younger adults did not differ in their ratings of worry intensity during the worry induction. An age difference in the experience of worry was found …

Development And Testing Of A Fractal Analysis Algorithm For Face Recognition, Nicholas J. Hansford
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Following an earlier development for fingerprints by Deal (1) and Stoffa (2), it was suggested that this algorithm may work on faces (or more precisely, face images). First, this work transformed a 2-D electronic image file of a human face into a numeric system via a similar random walk process by Deal and Stoffa. Second, the numeric system was analyzed, and the numeric system may then be tested against a database of similarly converted images. The testing determined whether the subject of the image is part of the database. Finally, the efficiency, quickness, and accuracy of such an algorithm were …

L-ascorbic acid is an important antioxidant in both plants and animals. In plants, it is important for detoxifying reactive oxygen species that are produced during photosynthesis and cellular metabolism. It also contributes to several facets of plant growth as an enzyme cofactor, signaling molecule, and a precursor to several other metabolites. It has been implicated in the control of flowering time and senescence as well as several other growth processes largely through work with the ascorbic acid-deficient vtc mutants of Arabidopsis thaliana. Biochemical and genetic experiments have identified several pathways contributing to ascorbic acid biosynthesis, with the D-mannose/L-galactose pathway predominantly …
Rapid Assessment Of Delay-Of-Reinforcement Effects On Key Pecking Maintained By Fixed-Ratio Schedules, David P. Jarmolowicz
Rapid Assessment Of Delay-Of-Reinforcement Effects On Key Pecking Maintained By Fixed-Ratio Schedules, David P. Jarmolowicz
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Previous research on delay of reinforcement has focused primarily on variable-interval schedules. A fair amount is known about effects of delay duration, signaled versus unsignaled delays, and interval length in the context of these schedules. Less is known about these effects on other schedules of reinforcement. For example, little is known about the effects of delay duration, signals versus unsignaled delays, or the way that delays interact with ratio requirement when behavior is maintained by fixed-ratio schedules. Furthermore, the steady-state designs (wherein stable responding is obtained at each delay duration) used to investigate delay-of-reinforcement effects are often time consuming. The …
Mesostructured Hydrophobic-Oleophobic Silica Films For Sustained Functionality In Tribological Environments, Aaron J. Kessman
Mesostructured Hydrophobic-Oleophobic Silica Films For Sustained Functionality In Tribological Environments, Aaron J. Kessman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The primary goal of this research was to synthesize water- and oil-repellent coatings that offer sustained functionality and durability. Engineered low surface energy materials generally suffer from a lack of mechanical robustness, which makes them susceptible to damage by abrasive wear. Fluorinated silanes are often combined with alkoxide precursors via sol--gel co-condensation to create coatings with high hardness and good substrate adhesion. However, a common problem with these materials is that the organic moieties that provide low surface energy also become surface segregated and highly concentrated at the solid-air interface. With such a structure, mechanical removal of the top surface …

The Effect Of Dietary Inclusion Of Conjugated Linoleic Acid In Finishing Hog Feed On Sensory Characteristics And Storage Quality Indicators Of Pork Loin, Kaitlin Hope Maditz
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Marbling in meat occurs when fat is distributed throughout the skeletal muscle and is visually apparent by light streaks of fat that look like a marble pattern. It is associated with increased quality, tenderness, and likeability. Incorporating dietary conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) into finishing hog feed increases intramuscular fat and decrease backfat in harvested pigs; therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine if inclusion of CLA in pig feed would increase intramuscular marbling and consumer likeability without compromising storage stability. Twenty pigs were housed in ten pens (2 pigs per pen) and fed either 1% Soybean oil or …

The Performance Of Asynchronous Cooperative Diversity With Sic Receivers, Harish Palakurthi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna systems are well known for achieving the higher spectral efficiencies and improving the link reliability in wireless communications. But the use of multiple antennas in a cellular uplink is impractical due to the size constraints of the mobile device. The potential solution which was used is to exploit the user cooperation to create a virtual antenna array. In this paper we investigate the cooperative diversity in an asynchronous code-division multiple-access (CDMA) uplink by taking inter-user non-orthogonality (allocation of non-orthogonal channels to multiple users) into consideration.;Most the previous research work assumes the use of the inter-user …

Comparison Of A Work-Based Window Method To Nte Method For Reporting In-Use Emissions, Nathan Music
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Heavy-duty on-road diesel engines currently sold in the United States are subjected to emission certification over the Federal Test Procedure and Supplemental Emissions Test in an engine test cell as well as in-use testing in real world environments using portable emissions measurement systems (PEMS). The current method for analyzing in-use emissions is based on the Not-To-Exceed (NTE) region of engine operation. With this method, emissions are reported only when the engine is operating in the NTE region for a minimum of thirty seconds. The downfall to this method is that any engine operation outside of this region is neglected. An …
