Real-Time Acquisition Of Multi-View Face Images To Support Robust Face Recognition Using A Wireless Camera Network, Srikanth Parupati
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Recent terror attacks, intrusion attempts and criminal activities have necessitated a transition to modern biometric systems that are capable of identifying suspects in real time. But real-time biometrics is challenging given the computationally intensive nature of video processing and the potential occlusions and variations in pose of a subject in an unconstrained environment. The objective of this dissertation is to utilize the robustness and parallel computational abilities of a distributed camera network for fast and robust face recognition.;In order to support face recognition using a camera network, a collaborative middle-ware service is designed that enables the rapid extraction of multi-view …

Analysis And Classification Of Current Trends In Malicious Http Traffic, Risto Pantev
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Web applications are highly prone to coding imperfections which lead to hacker-exploitable vulnerabilities. The contribution of this thesis includes detailed analysis of malicious HTTP traffic based on data collected from four advertised high-interaction honeypots, which hosted different Web applications, each in duration of almost four months. We extract features from Web server logs that characterize malicious HTTP sessions in order to present them as data vectors in four fully labeled datasets. Our results show that the supervised learning methods, Support Vector Machines (SVM) and Decision Trees based J48 and PART, can be used to efficiently distinguish attack sessions from vulnerability …
An American "Duchess" In Disguise: John Singleton Copley's Turquerie Portrait Of Margaret Kemble Gage, Elizabeth Rininger
An American "Duchess" In Disguise: John Singleton Copley's Turquerie Portrait Of Margaret Kemble Gage, Elizabeth Rininger
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A number of portraits that John Singleton Copley painted in the years prior to the American Revolution show women clad in turquerie. Traditionally, art historians have explained the appearance of this fashion as provincial colonials copying fashions from their parent country. The appeal of the fashion was strong; however, the political, social, and sexual connotations complicate this explanation for the sitters' choice of dress. While the purpose here is not to disprove the explanation of fashion-consciousness, it is to read these portraits from the perspective of the colonized rather than the colonizer. It is an attempt to decode an appropriated …
Surfactants And Digital Alloys For Strain Relief In Iii-Nitride Distributed Bragg Reflectors And Related Heterostructures Via Metal Organic Vapor Phase Epitaxy, Lee Ellen Rodak
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
III-Nitride based semiconductors have emerged as one of the promising materials for electronic and opto-electronic devices, including but not limited to, solid state emitters, photodetectors, and transistors. Despite commercial success, several issues ranging from material growth to device fabrication remain unresolved and continue to hinder the efficiency of these devices. One such issue includes strain management in III-Nitride heterostructures. The binary alloys in the (Al,In,Ga)N family are characterized by a large lattice and thermal mismatch which leads to defect formation and cracking within heterostructures. These defects are detrimental to device fabrication and operation. This work investigates growth based techniques to …

Electrochemical And Microstructural Analysis Of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Electrodes, Mingjia Zhi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Fuel cells offer several advantages over conventional routines of power generation, such as substantially higher conversion efficiency, modular construction, minimal sitting restriction, and much lower production of pollutants. Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), in principle, can utilize all kinds of combustion fuels including coal derived syngas (CSG). The U.S. Department of Energy is currently working on coupling coal gasification and SOFC to form Integrated Gasification Fuel Cell (IGFC) systems. Such IGFC systems will enable the clean, efficient and cost-effective use of coal---the nation's most abundant fossil fuel.;However several issues need to be considered before SOFC can be really commercialized. The …
Demographic Response Of American Ginseng (Panax Quinquefolius L.) To Climate Change, Sara Souther
Demographic Response Of American Ginseng (Panax Quinquefolius L.) To Climate Change, Sara Souther
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Ecological response to recent climate change has been documented for a multitude of species worldwide. Climate models predict further increases in temperature, as much as 8 times the degree of warming that has already occurred. Given observations of species response to contemporary climate change and the unprecedented degree of warming expected over the next century, climate change will no doubt determine future ecosystem composition and affect global species diversity. In order to prevent loss of biodiversity, it is necessary to understand and accurately project species' response to climate, and to identify species that are vulnerable to climate change driven extinctions. …
Computational Hybrid Systems For Identifying Prognostic Gene Markers Of Lung Cancer, Ying-Wooi Wan
Computational Hybrid Systems For Identifying Prognostic Gene Markers Of Lung Cancer, Ying-Wooi Wan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Lung cancer is the most fatal cancer around the world. Current lung cancer prognosis and treatment is based on tumor stage population statistics and could not reliably assess the risk for developing recurrence in individual patients. Biomarkers enable treatment options to be tailored to individual patients based on their tumor molecular characteristics. To date, there is no clinically applied molecular prognostic model for lung cancer. Statistics and feature selection methods identify gene candidates by ranking the association between gene expression and disease outcome, but do not account for the interactions among genes. Computational network methods could model interactions, but have …

Ubps Unraveled: Genetic Characterization Of Three Ubiquitin Specific Protease Subfamilies In Arabidopsis Thaliana., Crystal M. Goldyn
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study investigated the function of three ubiquitin specific protease subfamilies (UBP15-19, UBP12/13 and UBP3/4) in Arabidopsis thaliana via reverse genetic analysis. In the investigation of the UBP15-19 subfamily, T-DNA insertion lines were utilized to determine phenotypic characteristics compared to wild-type individuals, such as reduced inflorescence, leaf, flower and silique size. Phenotypic alterations were also detected that affected development and reproduction. A phylogenetic analysis of this subfamily uncovered three subgroups in the monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous plants, but a single group in the mosses suggested that subgroup evolution began prior to the separation of dicots and monocots but following the divergence …

Protein Surface Characterization Using An Invariant Descriptor, Zainab Abu Deeb
Protein Surface Characterization Using An Invariant Descriptor, Zainab Abu Deeb
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A novel descriptor to characterize protein surfaces, and hence classify functionally similar proteins into functional families is proposed. The descriptor exploits the protein tertiary structure surface, locally and globally, to identify intra-family proteins. By using only sparse data based on the C-alpha atoms on the protein surface, we characterize the surface using different invariant descriptors, namely, distance distributions, residue co-occurrences, and distance-residue co-occurrences between all atoms confined to a particular patch. Using the method, proteins with very low sequence similarity were successfully classified into their functional families with a high degree of accuracy.

Increasing population and very modest economic growth are major concerns in regional economic development. There have been many fluctuations and inconsistencies in regional economic growth since the Second World War. Policy makers started to pay attention to the possibility of increasing entrepreneurial activities in the Northeast region after realizing that manufacturing firms alone cannot meet the employment needs of local residents. The United States has focused on providing more support to entrepreneurs to have a competitive economy. Entrepreneurship is important for economic activities such as employed resources, labor and capital goods pricing, organizing production, and marketing goods. This study develops …
Parameterized Strings: Algorithms And Data Structures, Richard A. Beal
Parameterized Strings: Algorithms And Data Structures, Richard A. Beal
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A parameterized string (p-string) T = T[1] T[2]...T[n] is a sophisticated string of length n composed of symbols from a constant alphabet Sigma and a parameter alphabet pi. Given a pair of p-strings S and T, the parameterized pattern matching (p-match) problem is to verify whether the individual constant symbols match and whether there exists a bijection between the parameter symbols of S and T. If the two conditions are met, S is said to be a p-match of T. A significant breakthrough in the p-match area is the prev encoding, which is proven to identify a p-match between S …
Effect Of Temperature Variation On The Structural Capacity Of A Multi-Span Horizontally Curved Steel I-Girder Bridge, Christopher L. Beckett
Effect Of Temperature Variation On The Structural Capacity Of A Multi-Span Horizontally Curved Steel I-Girder Bridge, Christopher L. Beckett
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Horizontally curved steel I-girder bridges have become a popular bridge design choice among bridge engineers. The current level of knowledge regarding the design and analysis of curved I-girder bridges under thermal loading is incomplete. The thermal expansion of curved bridges is rather complicated and current standards provide little guidance when designing a bearing plan to prevent the development of thermal stresses and out-of-plane distortional behavior. Thermal stresses, in the form of axial compressive stresses, will develop if thermal expansion is constrained. This study examines the effect of different bearing arrangements on the development of thermal stresses and out-of-plane web distortions …

A Two Dimensional Numerical Soot Model For Advanced Design And Control Of Diesel Particulate Filters, Prabash E. Abeyratne
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
One of the most effective methods to control diesel particulate matter (PM) emissions from heavy duty diesel engines is to use wall flow diesel particulate filters (DPF). It is still a major challenge to get an accurate estimation of soot loading, which is crucial for the engine afterteratment assembly optimization. In the recent past, several advanced computational models of DPF filtration and regeneration have been presented to assess the cost effective optimization of future particulate trap systems. They are characterized by different degree of detail and computational costs, depending on the specific application (i.e diagnostics, control, system design, component design …

West Virginia Senate Bill 247 mandated that local school systems develop and implement universal preschool programs for all four-year-old children and three-year-old children as mandated by federal law. This mandate was the impetus for West Virginia Policy 2525: West Virginia's Access to a Quality Early Education System. Within policy, local school systems are mandated to collaborate with licensed childcare providers and Head Start to make up at least 50% of the preschool classrooms. This descriptive qualitative case study investigated how the experience of compulsory collaboration required by WV policy 2525 is described by early education providers. The description of the …
A Dutch Woman In An English World: The Legacy Of Alida Livingston Of New York, Melinda M. Mohler
A Dutch Woman In An English World: The Legacy Of Alida Livingston Of New York, Melinda M. Mohler
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In 1674, at the conclusion of the Third Dutch War, the Treaty of Westminster placed the Dutch New Netherlands permanently under English control. For the many businesswomen of Dutch heritage who resided in the New Netherlands during the late seventeenth century, this shift in colonial power resulted in a drastic loss of economic freedom and, in many cases, brought an end to their public business ventures. As Dutch businesswomen increasingly retreated from the public sphere, their need to document daily activities dwindled and records of their personal lives all but disappeared. A study of the correspondence of Alida Schuyler Livingston …

Modeling Of Heat Transfer And Reactive Chemistry For Particles In Gas-Solid Flow Utilizing Continuum-Discrete Methodology (Cdm), Jordan M. H. Musser
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A comprehensive multi-phase flow model requires coupled hydrodynamics, boundary conditions, heat and mass transfer, and chemical reaction kinetics. A model must also capture the multi-scale nature of these problems. Computational fluid dynamics-discrete element method (CFD-DEM) provides an accurate description of chemical reactions and heat and mass transfer at the particle scale. Currently, MFIX-DEM, the existing CFD-DEM used as the foundation for this work, can only model coupled hydrodynamics. This dissertation extends the functionality of MFIX-DEM by addressing the remaining deficiencies in three separate efforts.;The first effort outlined in this dissertation focuses on the algorithmic development of discrete mass inflow and …
Following Advice Because It's Been Paid For: Age, The Sunk-Cost Fallacy, And Loss Aversion, Leo Schlosnagle
Following Advice Because It's Been Paid For: Age, The Sunk-Cost Fallacy, And Loss Aversion, Leo Schlosnagle
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The sunk-cost fallacy occurs when a person invests more of a resource because they have made an irrecoverable initial investment (i.e., a sunk cost) compared to scenarios in which they did not make an initial investment, or made a smaller initial investment. The normatively correct decision is to invest exactly the same amount regardless of whether or not an initial investment has been made. An aversion to "wasting" or "losing" the initial investment has been cited as a potential reason for why people commit the sunk-cost fallacy (Arkes & Blumer, 1985; Soman, 2004). Additionally, younger adults commit the sunk-cost fallacy …
On The Evolution Of Social Development In The British Sudan A Comparative Study Of The Gezira And Zande Cotton-Growing Schemes, Joseph M. Snyder
On The Evolution Of Social Development In The British Sudan A Comparative Study Of The Gezira And Zande Cotton-Growing Schemes, Joseph M. Snyder
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
By the early 1950s, two-thirds of the manpower in the British Colonial Service -- some 10,000 out of 15,000 expatriates -- was concentrated in Africa. The total disbursements on research showed the same Africanist bias: fifty-eight percent of the research money spent between 1940 and 1961 went into British African territories. These facts are indicative not only of the obvious -- the massive investment obliged by planned decolonization -- but also of the more opaque and protean: the influence of Lord Hailey's African survey, begun in the late 1930s, which culminated in his Native Administration and Political Development in Tropical …

Role Of Inhibition In Binaural Processing, Jesse M. Thompson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The medial and lateral superior olives (MSO, LSO) are the lowest order cell groups in the mammalian auditory circuit to receive massive binaural input. The MSO functions in part to encode interaural time differences (ITD), the predominant cue for localization of low frequency sounds. Binaural inputs to the MSO consist of excitatory projections from the cochlear nuclei (CN) and inhibitory projections from both the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body (MNTB) and lateral nucleus of the trapezoid body (LNTB). The interaction of excitatory and inhibitory currents within an MSO cell's soma and dendrites over the backdrop of its intrinsic ionic …
