"Near-By Nature": A Logical Framework For Building Integrated Agriculture., William Plyler
"Near-By Nature": A Logical Framework For Building Integrated Agriculture., William Plyler
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Building Integrated Agriculture (BIA) aims to reduce the environmental footprint of food production and to improve the human condition. BIA places food producing plants into the everyday working/living environment. This study explored the intersection of the diverse BIA requirements (human, plant, and building) as established by the relevant literature from various disciplines. Kaplan (1992), and Ulrich (1984; 1986; 1992) established the restorative physiological and psychological effects of plants in non-natural settings. Kaplan deemed these settings “Near-by Nature.†In building interiors, “Near-by Nature†is achieved through interiorscaping, a design practice that incorporates plant, building and occupant requirements. This study specifically investigated …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In this work, the effects of hydrogen (H2) absorption on the magnetic properties of Co/Pd multilayers are investigated. The saturation magnetization (Ms) and perpendicular anisotropy energy density (Kp) of Co/Pd multilayers were studied when the samples were exposed to one atmosphere of hydrogen (H2) and helium (He) at room temperature. Two series of (Co tCo/Pd tPd) were grown with the Co nominal thickness, tCo fixed at 2.5 A and 4.5 A and the tPd thickness, tPd varying from 0 to 25 A. When the Pd thickness was less than 10 A, there was no change in Ms and Kp. As …
Black Shale Lithofacies Prediction And Distribution Pattern Analysis Of Middle Devonian Marcellus Shale In The Appalachian Basin, Northeastern U.S.A., Guochang Wang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Marcellus Shale, marine organic-rich mudrock deposited during Middle Devonian in the Appalachian basin, is considered the largest unconventional shale-gas resource in United State. Although homogeneous in the appearance, the mudstone shows heterogeneity in mineral composition, organic matter richness, gas content, and fracture density. Two critical factors for unconventional mudstone reservoirs are units amenable to hydraulic fracture stimulation and rich of organic matter. The effectiveness of hydraulic fracture stimulation is influenced by rock geomechanical properties, which are related to rock mineralogy. The natural gas content in mudrock reservoirs has a strong relationship with organic matter, which is measured by total …

The Relationships Between Perinatal Loss Interventions At The Time Of Stillbirth And Maternal Grief., Peggy Lambert Fink
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Annually there are approximately 26,000 stillbirths in the United States. The loss of a child has the ability to derail life’s trajectory like no other loss, and stillbirth can significantly affect a woman’s relationships, her health, and future childbearing. Stillbirth interventions provided in the hospital are intended to provide comfort and support and assist women as they grieve. Stillbirth interventions have evolved over the last 30 years, but there have been no evaluations of interventions to determine if they were helpful to grieving mothers. This study, therefore, evaluated the impact of interventions provided at the time of …

Sports-Related Traumatic Brain Injury: An Investigation Of College Student-Athletes' Perceptions Of Communicative Facework And Communicative Strategies For Managing Uncertainty., Sydney M. Staggers
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Traumatic brain injury (TBI; also referenced as “concussionâ€) is recognized as a major public health issue in the United States with approximately 1.7 million individuals sustaining a TBI annually (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2012c). There is a greater propensity for concussions in athletic environments (Powell, 2001). Based on both reported and non-reported accounts, it is estimated that anywhere from 1.6 to 3.8 million sports-related (across all sports and recreational activities) concussions occur each year in the United States (Hayes, 2007). As a result, this dissertation, which entailed two studies, examined college student-athletes’ perceptions of others’ (i.e., coach, …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study examines British responses to African resistance in three specific locations within the East Africa Protectorate both before and during the First World War. Two specific questions are addressed. First, what kind of African resistance did the British colonial authorities face prior to the outbreak of the First World War and how were these resistance movements handled? The second question is what impact did the First World War have upon British policy in dealing with African resistance during the war itself? As case studies for British policy relating to the handling of African resistance before the start of the …
Effects Of D-Amphetamine On Delay Discounting With Different Response Requirements In Rats., Sally L. Huskinson
Effects Of D-Amphetamine On Delay Discounting With Different Response Requirements In Rats., Sally L. Huskinson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Impulsive choice is often examined using a delay-discounting procedure where choice is between two reinforcers that differ in amount and delay. Impulsive choice can be influenced by many factors, including drug administration or the addition of a constant delay to the smaller, more immediate and larger, more delayed reinforcer. Little research has examined whether increasing the number of responses (fixed-ratio) or amount of time (fixed-interval) required to earn the smaller, more immediate and larger, more delayed reinforcers would decrease impulsive choice. The current experiments used a modified Evenden and Ryan (1996) procedure, and choice was examined under conditions where the …

Implementation Of Wet Scrubbing Technologies To Marine Diesel Engines For The Reduction Of Nitrigen Oxide Emissions., Derek R. Johnson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Diesel engines are known for their reliability and fuel economy when compared to their gasoline counterparts. They are the engine of choice for application in marine vessels but are also known contributors of regulated emissions, especially oxides of nitrogen (NOx). NOx emissions have both negative health and environmental effects, which are exacerbated in port regions where marine activity is high. Recent emissions regulations have dramatically reduced engine out emissions for on-road and off-road engines by requiring new technologies but mainly apply to those newly produced. Marine diesel engines have useful lives of over 20 years. The focus of this research …

Glycan Characterization And Manipulation Using Phospholipid Additives For Capillary Electrophoresis, Stephanie A. Archer-Hartmann
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Protein glycosylation is of interest in a number of emerging fields, and plays important functional roles in cellular biology. The analysis of these molecules is nontrivial because they exhibit great complexity in both monomer makeup and linkages of these monomers. As a result, a common challenge that analytical techniques face is the separation of linkage glycan isomers. This dissertation is based on the research leading to the development of a phospholipid-capillary electrophoresis method that allows for highly efficient separations and the non-covalent incorporation of enzymes and lectins for in-capillary interactions. Glycans were removed from glycoproteins through enzymatic means, then labeled …
