Real-Time Load Frequency Control For An Isolated Microgrid System, Moataz A. Elbaz Aug 2012

Real-Time Load Frequency Control For An Isolated Microgrid System, Moataz A. Elbaz

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Microgrids are small power grids with distinct operation characteristics; they can operate either independently or connected to larger grids, and usually a significant proportion of their generation capacity is comprised from intermittent resources such as solar and wind power generations. Power grids, in general, must operate such that the power generation and power demand are balanced at all times. Such balance is attained by implementing a Load Frequency Control (LFC) mechanism. The goal of LFC in a microgrid system is to maintain the system's frequency within acceptable limits around nominal value under various conditions, such as fluctuating power demand and/or …

Spins In Thin Films And Nanodevices, Phillip Tabor Aug 2012

Spins In Thin Films And Nanodevices, Phillip Tabor

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The central theme of this work is the engineering of devices and materials that exhibit spin dependent phenomena. In particular, the spin orientation of charge carriers can play a central role in transport, especially in magnetic or other spin correlated media. Propagation of charge carriers with net spin results in a transfer of angular momentum that can excite static and dynamical states in active device elements. To utilize such phenomena in practical devices, new mew means of device characterization and optimization must be developed. To that end, we have performed experiments which elucidate some of the mechanisms underlying spin dependent …

Driving Cycle Properties And Their Influence On Fuel Consumption And Emissions, Oscar Francisco Delgado-Neira Aug 2012

Driving Cycle Properties And Their Influence On Fuel Consumption And Emissions, Oscar Francisco Delgado-Neira

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

When developing regulations or preparing emissions inventory models for on-road mobile sources, it is of critical importance to obtain representative values of fuel consumption and emissions rates that accurately represent the vehicle behavior for varying vehicle operation. Unfortunately, fuel consumption and emissions are often only known for a few test cycles which generally represent limited types of vehicle activity. It is known that distance-specific emissions and vehicle fuel consumption strongly depend on the vehicle activity and this dependency causes difficulties when trying to estimate fuel consumption and emissions over different vehicle activity than the original test cycle(s). The central hypothesis …

Vending Vice: The Rise And Fall Of West Virginia State Prohibition, 1852--1934, Michael J. Buseman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

West Virginia imposed state prohibition on its citizens on July 1, 1914. While the transition to a dry society was relatively quiet in the days leading up to July 1, this tranquility belied the sixty-year battle waged between Mountain State "wets" and "drys" over liquor proscription. Beginning in the 1850s among evangelical Protestants, the anti-liquor movement pushed for different levels of alcohol proscription. By the 1880s, drys were pushing for a state prohibitory amendment to the West Virginia Constitution. The legislative efforts of these pre-progressive agitators failed on multiple occasions. This political disappointment peaked with the statewide rejection of a …
