Predicting Emergency Dental Care Over A Decade: Investigating Dental Care-Related Fears In Symptomatic Treatment-Seeking Behavior, Cameron L. Randall

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Avoidance of dental care, resulting from fear and anxiety, has major implications for oral and overall health. For instance, untreated oral disease may exacerbate cardiovascular disease and diabetes, among other systemic health concerns (Williams et al., 2008). In the USA, 5-10% of adults avoid necessary dental treatment because of dental care-related fear (Milgrom et al., 2009). The long-term goal of this project was to improve our understanding of psychosocial barriers to oral health care. Specifically, the study aimed to examine the relation between dental care-related fears, fear of pain, and dental beliefs in a rural, Appalachian population and to determine …

New Abutment Angle Concept For Underground Coal Mining, Ihsan Berk Tulu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In the Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS), Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS) and LaModel programs, the magnitude of the abutment loading adjacent to a gob area is calculated using an "abutment angle" concept, and the extent of the abutment loading is determined as solely a function of depth from an empirically derived equation. However, the latest in-situ stress measurements of abutment loading performed in the United States and Australia have shown that there can be significant deviations in the measured abutment magnitude and extent as compared to the predicted values from the empirical formulas used in ARMPS, …

Methamphetamine is an addictive psychostimulant drug with an increasing prevalence of abuse worldwide. Recent evidence has linked methamphetamine exposure to a wide array of neurological complications some of which lead to neurodegenerative changes in the brain and hyperthermia. Currently, there are no FDA approved pharmacologic agents to treat the effects of methamphetamine. Recent evidence has suggested methamphetamine may, in part, produce some of its effects through sigma receptors making them a potential target for pharmacological intervention. While our lab has shown a number of selective sigma receptor ligands can provide neuroprotection against the neurotoxic and behavioral effects of methamphetamine, limitations …

Integer Flows And Modulo Orientations, Yezhou Wu Aug 2012

Integer Flows And Modulo Orientations, Yezhou Wu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Tutte's 3-flow conjecture (1970's) states that every 4-edge-connected graph admits a nowhere-zero 3-flow. A graph G admits a nowhere-zero 3-flow if and only if G has an orientation such that the out-degree equals the in-degree modulo 3 for every vertex. In the 1980ies Jaeger suggested some related conjectures. The generalized conjecture to modulo k-orientations, called circular flow conjecture, says that, for every odd natural number k, every (2k-2)-edge-connected graph has an orientation such that the out-degree equals the in-degree modulo k for every vertex. And the weaker conjecture he made, known as the weak 3-flow conjecture where he suggests that …

Use Of 3d Seismic Azimuthal Iso-Frequency Volumes For The Detection And Characterization Of High Porosity/Permeability Zones In Carbonate Reservoirs, Brian E. Toelle May 2012

Use Of 3d Seismic Azimuthal Iso-Frequency Volumes For The Detection And Characterization Of High Porosity/Permeability Zones In Carbonate Reservoirs, Brian E. Toelle

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Among the most important properties controlling the production from conventional oil and gas reservoirs is the distribution of porosity and permeability within the producing geologic formation. The geometry of the pore space within these reservoirs, and the permeability associated with this pore space geometry, impacts not only where production can occur and at what flow rates but can also have significant influence on many other rock properties. Zones of high matrix porosity can result in an isotropic response for certain reservoir properties whereas aligned porosity/permeability, such as open, natural fracture trends, have been shown to result in reservoirs being anisotropic …
