Analysis And Detection Of Fingerprint Creases, Olaoluwa Peter Laseinde
Analysis And Detection Of Fingerprint Creases, Olaoluwa Peter Laseinde
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Fingerprint is a biometric trait that is widely used for human identification and verification. Most fingerprint biometric systems make use of certain salient features on the fingerprint, including minutiae points, pores, and singular points, for comparing two fingerprint images. In this work, we explore the possibility of using fingerprint creases for comparing two fingerprints. Creases can be described as white lines or scars on a fingerprint image. Recent studies have determined that some creases are genetically influenced although the origin of creases has not been completely characterized. While no published work exists for crease matching, some studies have explored the …
Impact Of Stress-Field Changes Induced By Hydraulic Fracturing On Subsurface Fault Stability, Qian Gao
Impact Of Stress-Field Changes Induced By Hydraulic Fracturing On Subsurface Fault Stability, Qian Gao
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Hydraulic fracturing is essential for economically producing hydrocarbons from shale reservoirs, and thus has been extensively used in completion of shale gas wells. However, fracturing formations can change in-situ stresses in the surrounding areas. There are concerns that hydraulic fracturing may potentially reactivate the subsurface faults nearby the treatment wells. The reactivated faults could cause many problems, such as early aborting/failure of fracturing treatment, fluid leakage along the fault and even seismicity events.;3D numerical models are developed based on finite element method. The comparison between analytical and numerical solutions indicates an excellent agreement has been achieved, which certificates the applicability …
Augmented Propeller Design With The Use Of A Passive Circulation Control Pressurization System, Jonathan Kweder
Augmented Propeller Design With The Use Of A Passive Circulation Control Pressurization System, Jonathan Kweder
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Circulation control is a high-lift device used on the main wing of an aircraft. This technology has been in the research and development phase for over sixty years primarily for fixed-wing aircraft when the early models were referred to as "blown flaps." Circulation control works by increasing the near surface velocity of the airflow over the leading edge and/or trailing edge of a specially designed aircraft wing using a series of blowing slots that eject high velocity jets of air. The wing has a rounded trailing edge, and ejects the air tangentially, through these slots inducing the Coanda Effect. This …

An Evaluation Of The Occurrence Of Micronuclei And Other Nuclear Abnormalities In Fishes From The Great Lakes Basin, United States, Ryan Patrick Braham
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Biological markers (biomarkers) sensitive to genotoxic and mutagenic contamination in fishes are widely used to identify contamination in the aquatic environment. The "fish tumors or other deformities" biological use impairment (BUI) occurs at 18 of the 30 areas of concern (AOC) located in the Great Lakes basin within the United States. As each AOC evaluates this specific BUI for possible delisting, biomarkers sensitive to both genotoxic and mutagenic chemicals can be integrated as a possible criterion for delisting. The micronucleus assay identifies genotoxic contamination by observing the presence of a micronucleus (MN), along with a primary nucleus within the cellular …

Robust Real-Time Recognition Of Action Sequences Using A Multi-Camera Network, Rahul Ratnakar Kavi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Real-time identification of human activities in urban environments is increasingly becoming important in the context of public safety and national security. Distributed camera networks that provide multiple views of a scene are ideally suited for real-time action recognition. However, deployments of multi-camera based real-time action recognition systems have thus far been inhibited because of several practical issues and restrictive assumptions that are typically made such as the knowledge of a subjects orientation with respect to the cameras, the duration of each action and the conformation of a network deployment during the testing phase to that of a training deployment. In …

Recognition Of Arabic Handwritten Words, Omar Alhmouz
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Recognizing Arabic handwritten words is a difficult problem due to the deformations of different writing styles. Moreover, the cursive nature of the Arabic writing makes correct segmentation of characters an almost impossible task. While there are many sub systems in an Arabic words recognition system, in this work we develop a sub system to recognize Part of Arabic Words (PAW). We try to solve this problem using three different approaches, implicit segmentation and two variants of holistic approach. While Rothacker found similar conclusions while this work is being prepared, we report the difficulty in locating characters in PAW using Scale …

Comparison Of Groundwater Seepage Modeling In Approximate Original Contour And Geomorphic Valley Fill Design, Nathan C. Depriest
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Excess spoil generated during surface mining in southern West Virginia is generally placed in headwater valleys. Known as valley fills, these structures are designed to move water rapidly through constructed drains to maximize geotechnical stability using the conventional design method termed Approximate Original Contour (AOC). Seepage from valley fills tends to be elevated with respect to calcium, magnesium, alkalinity and sulfates and there is evidence that, in high concentrations, these ions can contribute to stream degradation. New fluvial geomorphic principals are being researched to aid in reclamation alternatives to AOC designs. Geomorphic designs have proven successful in semi-arid regions; however, …
