The proposed system relies on near field communication in order to transfer data between probe and device under test. The probe and IC will include small antenna and a transceiver circuit. The antenna and the transceiver circuit …

Stray Gas Occurrences In Groundwater In Randolph County, West Virginia, Usa, Lindsey J. Bowman Jan 2014

Stray Gas Occurrences In Groundwater In Randolph County, West Virginia, Usa, Lindsey J. Bowman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Stray gas in groundwater is a rising health and safety concern and previous research has documented the enhancement of deep fluid migration to shallow aquifers by shale gas activity. However, stray gas can be generated or migrate naturally into shallow aquifers and more research is needed to establish baseline conditions prior to energy development in a region. A previous survey of groundwater in central West Virginia revealed that some high stray gas concentrations in groundwater wells could possibly be related to coal mining or oil and gas development (Mulder 2012). However, a few wells in Randolph County had high levels …

Techniques For Ocular Biometric Recognition Under Non-Ideal Conditions, Raghavender Reddy Jillela Dec 2013

Techniques For Ocular Biometric Recognition Under Non-Ideal Conditions, Raghavender Reddy Jillela

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The use of the ocular region as a biometric cue has gained considerable traction due to recent advances in automated iris recognition. However, a multitude of factors can negatively impact ocular recognition performance under unconstrained conditions (e.g., non-uniform illumination, occlusions, motion blur, image resolution, etc.). This dissertation develops techniques to perform iris and ocular recognition under challenging conditions. The first contribution is an image-level fusion scheme to improve iris recognition performance in low-resolution videos. Information fusion is facilitated by the use of Principal Components Transform (PCT), thereby requiring modest computational efforts. The proposed approach provides improved recognition accuracy when low-resolution …

Effects Of Estrogen In An Aged Animal Model Of Stroke, Rachel L. Leon Dec 2013

Effects Of Estrogen In An Aged Animal Model Of Stroke, Rachel L. Leon

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In 2000, approximately 10 million women were taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for alleviation of menopausal symptoms. A number of prior animal studies also suggested that HRT may be neuroprotective and cardioprotective as well. Although estrogen is neuroprotective in young adult animal models of stroke, clinical trials demonstrate that estrogen increases the incidence and severity of stroke in aged women. We have previously shown that experimental stroke pathophysiology differs between young adult and aged rats. In the first study, we show that aged rats treated with 17beta-estradiol had significantly increased infarct volumes compared to placebo-treated aged rats. Young adult rats …

Continuities On Subspaces, Timothy James Glatzer Dec 2013

Continuities On Subspaces, Timothy James Glatzer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

We define a generalized continuity by declaring that for any family S of subsets of a topological space X, a function f : X → Y is S -continuous if for each S∈ S , the function f ↾ S : S → Y is continuous. This is easily seen to generalize such well known concepts as separate continuity and linear continuity. Using this definition as a way to unify several disparate results, we attempt to create a theory of S -continuity. As a part of this program, we give constructions for S -continuous functions for several natural classes S …
