In the recent past, crimes against children and the number of the missing children have been stayed at high. It is a tragic disaster for a family if their child is missing. Feeling safe about their children is very important for the parents. Therefore, there is an urgent requirement for safety support systems to prevent crimes against children and for anti-loss, particularly when the children are on their own, such as on the ways to and from schools. Thanks to the highly development of telecommunication and mobile technologies, preventive devices such as child ID kits, family trackers have come to …

Salix Spp. As A Biomass Crop: Investigating Their Potential On Marginal Lands And The Use Of Biochar As A Soil Amendment, Heather A. Nobert Jan 2015

Salix Spp. As A Biomass Crop: Investigating Their Potential On Marginal Lands And The Use Of Biochar As A Soil Amendment, Heather A. Nobert

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Energy consumption has drastically increased over the past 150 years and the pressure put on the environment to provide these resources has increased as a consequence. At least 2.5 million hectares of land in the United States has been disturbed as a result of surface mining for coal. Biomass crops have been explored as an alternative energy source. In West Virginia little land is available for those crops; however as a result of coal extraction, at least 50,000 acres of previously strip or surface mined area has been deemed suitable for reclamation with biomass crops. Due to the challenges associated …

Sexual Assault On The College Campus: A Partial Test Of Male Peer Support Theory, Falak Ojjeh Jan 2015

Sexual Assault On The College Campus: A Partial Test Of Male Peer Support Theory, Falak Ojjeh

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Researchers have identified a number of variables that influence sexual assault on college campuses; peer influence being one of them. According to the sexual assault literature, more than a quarter of victims of sexual assault report their offender was a fraternity member. Additionally, the literature shows that in many sexual assault cases, both the victim and the offender were intoxicated. In applying Walter DeKeseredy's theory of Male Peer Support -- all-male groups that legitimate women abuse -- to on-campus fraternity organizations, this study examines the link is between the drinking and rape cultures promoted by fraternities, specifically, the use of …

Dimensions Of Political Reasoning: Associations Among Informational Assumptions, Sociopolitical Values, And Domain-Specific Judgments About Laws, Benjamin Oosterhoff Jan 2015

Dimensions Of Political Reasoning: Associations Among Informational Assumptions, Sociopolitical Values, And Domain-Specific Judgments About Laws, Benjamin Oosterhoff

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Adolescents' beliefs about laws are a critical component of their emerging political reasoning, which is hypothesized to guide political decisions in adulthood. Laws serve a variety of purposes by restricting certain social behaviors. However, little is known about the types of laws adolescents view as important and obligatory to obey, or the amount of punishment that should be received for breaking different laws. Identifying individual differences in these beliefs may help elucidate the developmental origins of political attitudes. Therefore, the current study had three primary goals. The first goal was to utilize social domain theory to assess adolescents' judgments and …

A Phenomenological Study Of Living With Excess Facial Hair For African-American Women, Courtney M. Pate

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Excess facial hair is a characteristic of hirsutism. Excess facial hair can alter a woman's presentation of self in living day-to-day. Research is sparse in the realm of studying women who do not suffer from polycystic ovarian syndrome, who have excess facial hair. Women of varying racial backgrounds are also underrepresented in the current literature. The purpose of this study was to explore the structure of meaning of living with excess facial hair for African-American women. The stories of eight women were gathered and analyzed using van Manen's phenomenological approach and middle range story theory. As a result of this …

Aerodynamic Response Of A Pitching Airfoil With Pulsed Circulation Control For Vertical Axis Wind Turbine Applications, Chad C. Panther Jan 2015

Aerodynamic Response Of A Pitching Airfoil With Pulsed Circulation Control For Vertical Axis Wind Turbine Applications, Chad C. Panther

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWTs) have experienced a renewed interest in development for urban, remote, and offshore applications. Past research has shown that VAWTs cannot compete with Horizontals Axis Wind Turbines (HAWTs) in terms of energy capture efficiency. VAWT performance is plagued by dynamic stall (DS) effects at low tip-speed ratios (lambda), where each blade pitches beyond static stall multiple times per revolution. Furthermore, for lambda<2, blades operate outside of stall during over 70% of rotation. However, VAWTs offer many advantages such as omnidirectional operation, ground proximity of generator, lower sound emission, and non-cantilevered blades with longer life. Thus, mitigating dynamic stall and improving VAWT blade aerodynamics for competitive power efficiency has been a popular research topic in recent years and the directive of this study.;Past research at WVU focused on the addition of circulation control (CC) technology to improve VAWT aerodynamics and expand the operational envelope. A novel blade design was generated from the augmentation of a NACA0018 airfoil to include CC capabilities. Static wind tunnel data was collected for a range of steady jet momentum coefficients (0.01≤ Cmu≤0.10) for analytical vortex model performance projections. Control strategies were developed to optimize CC jet conditions throughout rotation, resulting in improved power output for 2≤lambda≤5. However, the pumping power required to produce steady CC jets reduced net power gains of the augmented turbine by approximately 15%. The goal of this work was to investigate pulsed CC jet actuation to match steady jet performance with reduced mass flow requirements. To date, no experimental studies have been completed to analyze pulsed CC performance on a pitching airfoil.;The research described herein details the first study on the impact of steady and pulsed jet CC on pitching VAWT blade aerodynamics. Both numerical and experimental studies were implemented, varying Re, k, and +/-alpha to match a typical VAWT operating environment. A range of reduced jet frequencies (0.25≤St≤4) were analyzed with varying Cmu, based on effective ranges from prior flow control airfoil studies. Airfoil pitch was found to increase the baseline lift-to-drag ratio (L/D) by up to 50% due to dynamic stall effects. The influence of dynamic stall on steady CC airfoil performance was greater for Cmu=0.05, increasing L/D by 115% for positive angle-of-attack. Pulsed actuation was shown to match, or improve, steady jet lift performance while reducing required mass flow by up to 35%. From numerical flow visualization, pulsed actuation was shown to reduce the size and strength of wake vorticity during DS, resulting in lower profile drag relative to baseline and steady actuation cases. A database of pitching airfoil test data, including overshoot and hysteresis of aerodynamic coefficients (Cl, Cd), was compiled for improved analytical model inputs to update CCVAWT performance predictions, where the aforementioned L/D improvements will be directly reflected.;Relative to a conventional VAWT with annual power output of 1 MW, previous work at WVU proved that the addition of steady jet CC could improve total output to 1.25 MW. However, the pumping cost to generate the continuous jet reduced yearly CCVAWT net gains to 1.15 MW. The current study has shown that pulsed CC jets can recover 4% of the pumping demands due to reduced mass flow requirements, increasing annual CCVAWT net power production to 1.19 MW, a 19% improvement relative to the conventional turbine.

Effect Of Time Of Pgf2alpha Application On Reproductive Outcome In Ewes, Callayn Danae Paul

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Traditionally, prostaglandin F2alpha (PGF2alpha) has been included in short-term progesterone-based estrous synchronization (STPBES) protocols but its inclusion has been associated with a reduction in fertility at the synchronized estrus. Also, previous studies have shown that there are differences in the endocrine status and follicular dynamics of ewes at different stages of the estrous cycle, although effects have not been sufficiently evaluated regarding the reproductive outcomes when luteolysis is induced on different days of the cycle. To evaluate the effect of time of application of PGF2alpha relative to the progesterone treatment on fertility, ewes (N=442) from 4 farms located in WV …

Kriging-Based Design Of Experiments For Multi-Source Exposure-Response Studies In Nanotoxicology, Ying Pei

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

One of the major challenges with toxicology studies of nanomaterials (NMs), compared to traditional materials or chemicals, lies in the large NM variety (or sources) caused by their various physico-chemical properties. How to efficiently design multi-source biological experiments for the toxicity characterization of NMs in terms of their exposure-response profiles? This work intends to address this question by a two-stage experimental design procedure, which is developed based on the statistical model, stochastic kriging with qualitative factors (SKQ). With a given experimental budget, the SKQ-based design method aims at achieving the highest-quality SKQ, which synergistically models the exposure-response data from multiple …

Perceived Burdensomeness In Older And Younger Adults: Evaluation Of The Psychometric Properties Of The Interpersonal Needs Questionnaire, Julie Lutz

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Perceived burdensomeness is a major risk factor in the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide, and may be particularly relevant in the older population, in which suicide rates are relatively high. However, there is currently only one widely-used measure of perceived burdensomeness, and there is currently little information on the validity of this measure for older adults. The aims were to 1) evaluate measurement invariance of the INQ-15 Perceived Burdensomeness subscale across younger and older adult age groups, and 2) evaluate the construct validity of the Perceived Burdensomeness subscale in younger and older adult age groups by comparing nomological networks in both …

You Can't Fight City Hall: Organization And Success In West Virginia, Theodore Malone Jan 2015

You Can't Fight City Hall: Organization And Success In West Virginia, Theodore Malone

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This research centers on the question of 'Who wins?' in criminal and civil cases heard by West Virginia's Supreme Court of Appeals. The study examines litigant characteristics and whether court winners are favored by virtue of their higher organizational levels, such as being business or government affiliates. The study is a partial small-scale replication of the prior research by Songer and Sheehan (1992) who determined that litigation resources that resulted from higher organizational levels predicated higher win rates in the United States Courts of Appeals. I utilized an array of cross-tabulations of success and litigant organization for a two-year sample …

Role Of Stem-Like Cells In Carbon Nanotube-Induced Pulmonary Fibrosis, Amruta Manke Jan 2015

Role Of Stem-Like Cells In Carbon Nanotube-Induced Pulmonary Fibrosis, Amruta Manke

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Recent studies have shown that pulmonary exposure to (CNT) results in rapid and progressive interstitial lung fibrosis in animals without causing persistent lung inflammation, which is normally associated with other known fibrogenic agents. This unusual fibrogenic effect of CNT raises important health issues since the exposure could result in deadly and incurable lung fibrosis. Accumulating evidence indicates the fibrogenic potential of carbon nanotubes, however, the underlying mechanism remains poorly addressed. Recent studies have demonstrated the pathogenic role of mesenchymal stem cells in pulmonary fibrosis that differentiate into myofibroblasts and contribute to disease progression. Understanding the molecular/cellular basis of these fibrosis-associated …

Legalized Racial Profiling And Arizona Sb1070: A Framing Effects Study, Agnieszka N. Marciniak Jan 2015

Legalized Racial Profiling And Arizona Sb1070: A Framing Effects Study, Agnieszka N. Marciniak

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Immigration has become one of the most important topics on the agenda of federal and state governments. President Obama just passed his pro-immigration executive order allowing five million undocumented immigrants to gain legal work visas. Conversely, there are laws such as Arizona Law SB1070, passed by Governor Jan Brewer in 2010, opposing Obama's pro-immigration stance. In the case of Arizona Law SB1070, it is important to have a basic understanding of the stereotypical perceptions people have of immigrants if laws like these are going to be enforced. In this study, we experimentally manipulated a real-life scenario of an immigrant being …

Three Essays In Health Economics, Patrick Manzi Jan 2015

Three Essays In Health Economics, Patrick Manzi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

I examine three issues in health economics. I first consider the effect of smoking bans on weight gain and find that while smoking bans do not lead to weight gain among the whole population, they may lead to slight increases in weight gain among current smokers. In the second essay I examine differences in maternal and infant health outcomes among mothers enrolled in the WIC program using a regression discontinuity approach. Results indicate that WIC participation decreases the likelihood of premature births, reduces the likelihood of breastfeeding and leads to decreases in maternal weight gain during pregnancy. Finally I examine …

Short Wave Infrared Imaging System For Night And Day Long Range Facial Recognition And Surveillance, Robert B. Martin Jan 2015

Short Wave Infrared Imaging System For Night And Day Long Range Facial Recognition And Surveillance, Robert B. Martin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The capability to detect, observe, and positively identify people at a distance is important to numerous security and defense applications. Traditional solutions for human detection and observation include long-range visible imagers for daytime and thermal infrared imagers for night-time use. Positive identification, through computer face recognition, requires facial imagery that can be repeatably matched to a database of visible spectrum facial mug shots. Nighttime identification at large distances is not possible with visible imagers due to lack of light, or with thermal infrared imagers due to poor correlation with visible facial imagery. An active-SWIR imaging system was developed that is …

Becoming A Mindful Sport Psychology Consultant: Defining, Developing, And Integrating Mindfulness Into Practice, Michelle M. Mcalarnen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Sport psychology consultation is a problem solving situation and process (Sears, Rudisill, & Mason-Sears, 2006) in which sport psychology consultants (SPCs) are interpersonal and content communicators. To date, research in applied sport psychology has not examined consultants from the perspective of consultants as communicators in problem solving situations. Additionally, it remains unclear how consultants' graduate education and applied training experience relates to certain communication skills, such as mindfulness, cognitive flexibility, and communication flexibility. Yet, these skills, and its influence on consultants, have garnered interest for further study in professional practice literature (Baer et al., 2008; Davis, 2013; Poczwardowski & Sherman, …

Evaluating The Impacts Of Vaccination, Antiviral Treatment And School Closure On Influenza Epidemic, Xiaofei Shi Jan 2015

Evaluating The Impacts Of Vaccination, Antiviral Treatment And School Closure On Influenza Epidemic, Xiaofei Shi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Multi-objective simulation optimization was performed to synergistically investigate the cost and benefits of the most commonly-used strategies for H1N1 epidemic mitigation: vaccination, antiviral treatment, and school closure. By simultaneously considering the three intervention strategies, this study leads to findings that supplement those in the existing work, and provides additional insights regarding intervention decision making. Specifically, our investigation suggests that different vaccine prioritization strategies, the age-based versus ACIP (Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices) recommendation, be implemented depending on vaccine availability; individual school closure policies are favored over their global counterparts, at least when both vaccination and antiviral treatment are implemented with …

Analysis Of Rna Degradation In Dental Pulp To Estimate Postmortem Interval, Amanda Balasko Jan 2015

Analysis Of Rna Degradation In Dental Pulp To Estimate Postmortem Interval, Amanda Balasko

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

There are several methods that are currently used to estimate a postmortem interval (PMI), including physiological, biochemical, entomological, and archeological approaches. However, these methods are not effective in estimating PMI's extending from several weeks to months. The study presented here was performed to create an independent, objective biological method to estimate PMI by analyzing the degradation of 18S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) from porcine and human dental pulp. If successful, this method would overlap and extend the current PMI estimation methods. With a concept similar to that of radioactive carbon-14 dating, this method analyzed two different sized segments -- one large, …

Role Of Multi-Site Phosphorylation In Regulation Of E(Spl) M8 Activity During Drosophila Neurogenesis, Mohna Bandyopadhyay

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Notch signaling is an evolutionarily conserved pathway that regulates cell-fate determination at various stages of development in invertebrate and vertebrate species. The Notch pathway mediates juxtacrine signaling through a process termed as lateral inhibition by which two equipotent cells adopt distinct cell fates. The functions of Notch have been exceptionally well analyzed during neurogenesis in Drosophila, particularly during eye and mechanosensory bristle morphogenesis. At the onset of neurogenesis, proneural bHLH activators encoded by atonal (ato) or the achaete-scute complex (ASC) is expressed in groups of cells, called proneural clusters (PNCs) in the eye and the bristle tissue respectively. From each …

Gender, Policies, And Politics, Andrea S. Barrick

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the role of gender in shaping policies and politics. In the first empirical chapter, I explore support for women candidates for elected office and positions of public authority. The chapter investigates how membership in groups defined by race and gender shapes attitudes towards women holding political office. Next, I map how the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) made it to the legislative agenda and seek to answer the question of how gender entered the discussion of violence. Using the literature on issue framing and entrepreneurship, I explore how attention to the issue …

Understanding Falls Risk Screening Practices And Potential For Electronic Health Record Data-Driven Falls Risk Identification In Select West Virginia Primary Care Centers, Adam Baus Jan 2015

Understanding Falls Risk Screening Practices And Potential For Electronic Health Record Data-Driven Falls Risk Identification In Select West Virginia Primary Care Centers, Adam Baus

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Unintentional falls among older adults are a complex public health problem both nationally and in West Virginia. Nationally, nearly 40% of community-dwelling adults age 65 and older fall at least once a year, making unintentional falls the leading cause of both fatal and non-fatal injuries among this age group. This problem is especially relevant to West Virginia, which has a population ageing faster on average than the rest of the nation. Identifying falls risk in the primary care setting poses a serious challenge. Currently, the Timed Get-Up-and-Go test is the only recommended screening tool for determining risk. However, nationally this …

Parameterized Strings: Algorithms And Applications, Richard Beal Jan 2015

Parameterized Strings: Algorithms And Applications, Richard Beal

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The parameterized string (p-string), a generalization of the traditional string, is composed of constant and parameter symbols. A parameterized match (p-match) exists between two p-strings if the constants match exactly and there exists a bijection between the parameter symbols. Historically, p-strings have been employed in source code cloning, plagiarism detection, and structural similarity between biological sequences. By handling the intricacies of the parameterized suffix, we can efficiently address complex applications with data structures also reusable in traditional matching scenarios. In this dissertation, we extend data structures for p-strings (and variants) to address sophisticated string computations.;We introduce a taxonomy of classes …

Same-Race Role-Models And Self-Efficacy Among African American College Students, Rueben Brock Jan 2015

Same-Race Role-Models And Self-Efficacy Among African American College Students, Rueben Brock

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT; Lent & Brown, 1996) offers an understanding of career interest, goals, and performance. It is based, in large part, on the social cognitive construct of self-efficacy (Bandura, 1986). The theory offers a framework for the interactive influence that self-efficacy, outcomes expectations, and personal goals have upon each other in the formation of a person's career aspirations. Within SCCT and the Social Learning Theory that it is based on, there is the presumption that modeling is a key component of learning (Bandura, 1986). The purpose of this study was to explore the impact that same-race role-models …

Integrated Geochronology And Petrogenesis Of Volcanic Suites For Tectonic Sedimentary Studies: Karoo Basin, South Africa, Matthew P. Mckay Jan 2015

Integrated Geochronology And Petrogenesis Of Volcanic Suites For Tectonic Sedimentary Studies: Karoo Basin, South Africa, Matthew P. Mckay

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

By integrating high-precision, U-Pb zircon geochronology with zircon and whole rock/ tuff geochemistry, the tectonic history of an active margin can be assessed independently from strata preserved in sedimentary basins. This approach is particularly useful in regions where subsequent active tectonism has resulted in extensive igneous intrusion, tectonic dissection, or structural deformation of crustal suites, obscuring the record of previous geologic events. In this work I present 603 U-Pb zircon age coupled with zircon geochemical analyses collected from Sensitive High Resolution Ion Microprobe (SHRIMP) microanalyses, 15 U-Pb zircon Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry (TIMS) ages, and 109 U-Pb Laser Ablation-Inductively Coupled …
