Geomorphic Landform Design As An Alternative For Conventional Valley Fill Surface Mine Reclamation: Assessing Conceptual Design, Groundwater Modeling, And Contaminant Desorption, Nathan C. Depriest

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This research aimed to evaluate the potential of applying geomorphic landform design (GLD) principles to valley fill reclamation, specifically in southern West Virginia, central Appalachia, USA. When constructing reclaimed landforms, GLD aims to mimic the geomorphology of reference landforms that are stable and in erosive and hydrologic equilibrium. Challenges with the technique have been identified related to use in central Appalachia. Reference landform design values vary by location and need to be quantified at a local scale for site-specific design. Due to the steep slopes of existing valleys, constructing engineered landforms that naturally blend in with the surrounding environment may …

Estimation Of Energy Intensity In Wood Processing Sawmills Based On Analysis Of Product, Process And System Parameters, Dayakar Devaru

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Energy costs have risen immensely in the recent past and have strained US industrial sectors. The forest products sector is considered as an energy intensive industry group and energy use has an important impact on sawmill's financial integrity. Energy intensity or specific energy consumption (SEC) is an important aspect to wood products producing sawmills since it also represents production efficiency to some extent. This research focuses on developing SEC profiles for the manufacture of hardwood lumber in sawmills and estimating energy intensity based on product, process and system parameters. Energy benchmarking will help the sawmill industry to know their level …

Maopewa Iati Bi: Takai Tonqyayun Monyton "To Abandon So Beautiful A Dwelling": Indians In The Kanawha-New River Valley, 1500-1755, Isaac J. Emrick

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Maopewa iati bi is a Tutelo translation of William Byrd's eighteenth century quote "To abandon so beautiful a Dwelling." The quotes sets the stage for this examination of the indigenous landscape history of the eastern half of the Middle Ohio River Valley. The region, or Okahok amai, was the homeland of Siouan speakers, but passed from Siouan control into Iroquoian and Algonquian hands around turn of the eighteenth century. Not long afterward Indians, pressured by British and French citizens and governments, were forced to again fight to maintain their hard won new homes. By the middle of the eighteenth century, …

What Elite Men's Collegiate Tennis Coaches Look For In Recruits And How They Assess Preferred Player Characteristics, Brandyn H. Fisher

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Understanding what characteristics college tennis coaches look for, and how they evaluate these skills may provide beneficial information related to the recruiting process at the collegiate level. Currently, limited research exists concerning how college tennis coaches evaluate a recruit's intangible characteristics and what specific characteristics they look for. Some authors have suggested that coaches highly value intangible characteristics, such as character and leadership ability, and that these skills are believed to be necessary for success at the collegiate level (Flett, Paule, & Schneider, 2010). However, little is known about the exact processes coaches use to evaluate intangible skills, nor which …

Testing For Recurrence Of Ratio-Strained Behavior With Reinstatement, Resurgence, And Renewal, Stephanie L. Kincaid Jan 2015

Testing For Recurrence Of Ratio-Strained Behavior With Reinstatement, Resurgence, And Renewal, Stephanie L. Kincaid

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

If more and more responding is required to earn a reinforcer, as in progressive ratio schedules, behavior eventually becomes "strained," characterized by long pauses and irregular response patterns. If the response requirement continues to escalate, behavior reaches a "break point" and ultimately ceases altogether for a period of time. The present experiments investigated whether responding can be regenerated after the break point has been reached, using techniques that are known to produce recurrence of behavior that was eliminated by extinction. Pigeons responded on progressive ratio schedules until stable performance was observed. Then, test sessions were conducted in which a recurrence …

Party Systems, Democratization And Governance In Africa: Aligning Theory And Praxis Using Sierra Leone As A Case Study, Mohamed Saffa Lamin Jan 2015

Party Systems, Democratization And Governance In Africa: Aligning Theory And Praxis Using Sierra Leone As A Case Study, Mohamed Saffa Lamin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

There has been an upsurge in the movement towards democracy in developing countries since the end of the Cold War, which has led former autocratic regimes to embrace values of good governance as they transition to democracy (Huntington, 1991: 21-26). Democratic triumphalism has even led some scholars to declare the "end of history" due to the absence of alternative political systems that rival Western democracy (Fukuyama, 2006). The so-called "third wave" of democratization has been aided by multilateral institutions, international aid agencies and Western democratic governments, which since the 1990s have used democratization and good governance as collateral for foreign …

A Novel Microbial Source Tracking Dna Microarray Used For Pathogen Detection In Environmental Systems, Xiang Li Jan 2015

A Novel Microbial Source Tracking Dna Microarray Used For Pathogen Detection In Environmental Systems, Xiang Li

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Pathogen detection and the identification of fecal contamination sources can be challenging in environmental and engineered treatment systems. Factors including pathogen diversity and ubiquity of fecal indicator bacteria hamper risk assessment and remediation of contamination sources. Therefore, a quick method that can detect and identify waterborne pathogens in environmental systems is needed. In this work, a custom microarray targeting pathogens (viruses, bacteria, protozoa), microbial source tracking (MST) markers, mitochondria DNA (mtDNA) and antibiotic resistance genes was used to detect over 430 selected gene targets in whole genome amplification (WGA) DNA and complementary DNA (cDNA) isolated from sewage and animal (avian, …

Calcium Enhanced Protein Recovery From Underutilized Aquatic Resources And Optimizing Protein Gelation Strategies Using Functional Ingredients, Ilgin Paker

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Utilization of aquatic resources has rapidly gained importance. Traditional fish processing does not utilize the majority of the fish, thus generating large quantities of waste that impacts the economy, sustainability and environmental stress adversely. Protein can be extracted from underutilized sources such as silver carp and catfish using a pH shift processing method and incorporated into the human diet. Therefore, myofibrillar proteins were extracted from ground fish using different alkali solubilization and precipitation strategies. The efficacy of protein separation from lipids, and insoluble such as skin, fins, scales and bones were investigated and compared. Protein and lipid recovery yields were …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Rotating radio transients (RRATs) are neutron stars are that characterized by the emission of strong sporadic bursts. We have analysed the long- and short-term time dependence of the pulse arrival times and the pulse detection rates for eight RRAT sources from the Parkes Multi-beam Pulsar Survey (PMPS). We find significant periodicities in the individual pulse arrival times from six RRATs. These periodicities range from ∼30 minutes to 2100 days and from one to 16 independent (i.e. non-harmonically related) periodicities are detected for each RRAT. In addition, we find that pulse emission is a random process on short (hour-long) time scales …

Direct Writing Of Aluminum Doped Zinc Oxide For Optoelectronic And Energy Device Applications, Olatunde Ayodeji Abidakun

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Micro scale patterning of transparent conducting oxide (TCO) offers great promise in producing efficient and low cost devices. Most of the major patterning techniques are either complex, expensive, non-scalable, or involve the use of environmentally unfriendly chemicals. Therefore, patterning of Aluminum doped Zinc Oxide (AZO) via sol-gel route, combined with direct writing, in particular, nozzle-based robotic deposition, offers a relatively easy and efficient way to selectively deposit complex features in digitally precise locations, at low cost and without excessive use of harmful chemicals. However, the printing process involves the interplay of various parameters, which need to be properly related, in …

Predictive Scenario For Premixed Methane-Air Flame Spreading And Explosion Triggering In A Mining Passage, Sri Hari Ramakrishna Chalagalla Jan 2015

Predictive Scenario For Premixed Methane-Air Flame Spreading And Explosion Triggering In A Mining Passage, Sri Hari Ramakrishna Chalagalla

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

To reveal the inner mechanism of gas explosion, the entire scenario of premixed flame front evolution within an accidental fire is prescribed, quantitatively, with the situation of a methane-air explosion in a mining passage as the primary application. Specifically, the key stages of flame evolution are scrutinized. First, a globally-spherical expansion of a centrally-ignited, embryonic flame, with a possibility of self-similar acceleration caused by the hydrodynamic (Darrieus-Landau) instability occurs. This stage provides an order of magnitude increase in the flame speed in realistically large mining passages. Second, a transition from a globally-spherical front to a finger-shaped one happens, when a …

A Parallel Programmer For Non-Volatile Analog Memory Arrays, Spencer L. Clites Jan 2015

A Parallel Programmer For Non-Volatile Analog Memory Arrays, Spencer L. Clites

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Since their introduction in 1967, floating-gate transistors have enjoyed widespread success as non-volatile digital memory elements in EEPROM and flash memory. In recent decades, however, a renewed interest in floating-gate transistors has focused on their viability as non-volatile analog memory, as well as programmable voltage and current sources. They have been used extensively in this capacity to solve traditional problems associated with analog circuit design, such as to correct for fabrication mismatch, to reduce comparator offset, and for amplifier auto-zeroing. They have also been used to implement adaptive circuits, learning systems, and reconfigurable systems. Despite these applications, their proliferation has …

The Role Of Dynorphin In The Onset Of Puberty In Female Lambs, Justin Angelo Lopez Jan 2015

The Role Of Dynorphin In The Onset Of Puberty In Female Lambs, Justin Angelo Lopez

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The neural mechanisms underlying the onset of puberty are not well understood. In sheep, this process involves an increase in GnRH release due to decreased sensitivity to estrogen feedback. Because GnRH neurons do not express the relevant estrogen receptors, this pathway must contain interneurons. Neurons in the arcuate nucleus (ARC) of the hypothalamus that co-express kisspeptin (Kiss), neurokinin B, and dynorphin (DYN), i.e. KNDy neurons, play a critical role. Based on previous data, the overall hypothesis is that the prepubertal hold in GnRH/LH release results from reduced Kiss stimulation and heightened DYN inhibition in response to estrogen negative feedback. Two …

Continuous Wave Ring-Down Spectroscopy For Velocity Distribution Measurements In Plasma, Dustin W. Mccarren Jan 2015

Continuous Wave Ring-Down Spectroscopy For Velocity Distribution Measurements In Plasma, Dustin W. Mccarren

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy CRDS is a proven, ultra-sensitive, cavity enhanced absorption spectroscopy technique. When combined with a continuous wavelength (CW) diode laser that has a sufficiently narrow line width, the Doppler broadened absorption line, i.e., the velocity distribution functions (VDFs) of the absorbing species, can be measured. Measurements of VDFs can be made using established techniques such as laser induced fluorescence (LIF). However, LIF suffers from the requirement that the initial state of the LIF sequence have a substantial density and that the excitation scheme fluoresces at an easily detectable wavelength. This usually limits LIF to ions and atoms with …

Analytical And Computational Methods For The Assessment Of Biological Molecules And Their Binding Interactions: Case Studies In Dna Aptamer-Target Binding And P450-P450 Dimerization, Katherine M. Hickey

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A DNA aptamer against atrazine, a small molecule target, was computationally predicted using mfold and RNA fold to generate secondary structure from sequence, and NAB and RNA Composer to subsequently generate tertiary structure, subsequently relaxed, and the most-representative structures docked (AutoDock) with atrazine and simazine. According to analysis with X3DNA, the best predicted structure had the majority of its base-pairing sugars in the 2'-endo conformation, contained multiple helical regions in the B-form. Constrained docking revealed no preference for the target molecule (atrazine) over a negative target (simaxine), in contrast to in vitro binding results, thus more calculations are needed to …

Cross-Boundary Conservation Attributes Of Farmland And Woodland Owners In The Greenbrier River Valley Landscape Of Southeastern West Virginia, Valerie Grant

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Greenbrier River watershed features some of the most productive agriculture and timberlands, critical habitat, and extensive recreational opportunities in the central Appalachian Mountains. Cross-boundary conservation projects could address landscape scale issues such as parallelization and fragmentation in the agricultural, forest, and recreationally productive rural area in southeastern West Virginia. A survey of farmland and woodland owners explored relationships between landowner attributes, land management activities, sense of place, and willingness to participate in cross-boundary conservation efforts. Logistic regression analysis revealed two significant relationships between landowner attributes when considering neighboring properties while making management decisions and interest in conservation easements. These …

Performing Placeslessness: Early American Drama And The Liminal State, 1775-1859, James R. Holsinger Jan 2015

Performing Placeslessness: Early American Drama And The Liminal State, 1775-1859, James R. Holsinger

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In Performing Placeslessness, I argue that the lack of a consistent attachment to place--the geopathology that manifests in the problem of placelessness---contributed to the incoherence of American identity from the Revolutionary War through the mid-nineteenth century. In making this argument, I bridge the critical gap between Martin Brueckner's description of the geographic revolution (late-seventeenth to mid-eighteenth century) and Una Chaudhuri's Staging Place, in which she characterizes place as a problem in modern realist drama. Examining dramatic publications and performances from 1775-1859, I treat drama as a key site of negotiating problematic conceptions of space and place in America. This period …

Effect Of Wood Characteristics On Adhesive Bond Quality Of Yellow-Poplar For Use In Cross-Laminated Timbers, Daniel Hovanec Jan 2015

Effect Of Wood Characteristics On Adhesive Bond Quality Of Yellow-Poplar For Use In Cross-Laminated Timbers, Daniel Hovanec

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels are gaining more interest in North America, though CLTs are currently only approved for manufacture under ANSI/APA PRG-320 using select softwood species. Much of the low-grade Appalachian hardwood lumber produced has potential for being used to produce CLT panels given that necessary research data is developed to show that hardwood CLTs meet the requirements of the standard. One particular issue with using hardwood lumber in CLT panels is that it is often more difficult to achieve a strong, durable adhesive bond.;Among the Appalachian hardwood species, yellow-poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) is particularly abundant in West Virginia. The objective …

Upscaling Of The Acidizing Process In Heterogeneous Porous Media, Vahidreza Bitarafhaghighi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Coupled fluid flow, reaction and transport in porous media has been the topic of research in various disciplines for the past few decades. Conventional approach assumes a homogeneous and isotropic porous media, and simplifies the nature of coupling between fluid and rock interactions. However, including the reality of the process, i.e. assuming heterogeneous and anisotropic porous media with fully coupled rock fluid interaction, can lead to more advanced understanding of the fundamental physics behind the problem and developing efficient industrial applications. In the oil and gas industry optimization of different well stimulation techniques such as matrix acidizing in order to …

Advances In Mems Imu Cluster Technology For Small Satellite Applications, Drew E. Bittner Jan 2015

Advances In Mems Imu Cluster Technology For Small Satellite Applications, Drew E. Bittner

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In recent years, there has been increased interest in Micro-Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) due to their relatively small volumetric footprint and low-cost. Although this advantage far outweighs the volumetric footprint and cost of traditional high-performance IMUs, MEMS technology has yet to match the performance of such devices. In spite of this, it has been shown in theory that a cluster of MEMS IMUs may signicantly improve the performance over a single MEMS IMU. To further develop this theory, two prototype boards have been designed and constructed that include 16 MEMS accelerometers and gyroscopes af- xed to …
