Fundamental Study Of Nano-Scale Adhesion And Friction Properties Of Graphene In Ambient Air And Liquid Environments, Sai Suvineeth Ramayanam
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The aim of this study is to understand the fundamental tribological interactions of model contacts developed between a 'single' asperity silicon tip and a few layer graphene surface in ambient air, ionic liquid, and lubricating oil environments. The motivation to investigate such fundamental interactions stems from the need to gain an understanding of the tribological properties, morphology and defects of few layer graphene with respect to different synthesis methods including both bottom-up and top-down approaches. In particular, the surface properties of atomically thin sheets of graphene synthesized by three methods; (i) liquid phase exfoliation of graphene, (ii) chemical reduction of …

The Effects Of The Human Voice On The Behavioral Indicators Of Stress In Dogs Housed In An Animal Shelter, Juliana M. Hypes
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Animal shelters are very stressful environments for the animals housed there. Dogs that live in shelters have been observed exhibiting stress-related behavior such as barking, pacing, aggression and fear related behaviors such as cowering. Behaviors of this nature are off-putting to prospective adopters. To combat this problem, shelters are using different types of behavioral programs to reduce stress in the kennels. One such program involves human volunteers reading to the dogs. The aim of this study was to determine if listening to the human voice could reduce the expression of stress-related behaviors in shelter dogs. In order to establish the …

Rotating Space Elevators: Classical And Statistical Mechanics, Steven Knudsen
Rotating Space Elevators: Classical And Statistical Mechanics, Steven Knudsen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
We investigate a novel and unique dynamical system, the Rotating Space Elevator (RSE). The RSE is a multiply rotating system of strings reaching beyond the Earth geo-synchronous satellite orbit. Objects sliding along the RSE string ("climbers") do not require internal engines or propulsion to be transported far away from the Earth's surface. The RSE thus solves a major problem in the space elevator technology which is how to supply the energy to the climbers moving along the string. The RSE is a double rotating floppy string. The RSE can be made in various shapes that are stabilized by an approximate …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Seven lithofacies were identified from visual descriptions and quantitative interpretations using traditional core analysis methods, such as core and thin-section description, x-ray diffraction (XRD), total organic carbon (TOC), and spectral core gamma-ray (GR). Ingrain's digital rock physics (DRP) color-coded CoreHDRTM lithofacies classification was successful at illustrating small-scale variations in the core based off high resolution bulk density (RHOB) and photoelectric factor (PEF) logs. A core-scale lithofacies log and spectral core GR aids in recognizing condensed sections and stacking patterns, which helps establish a sequence stratigraphic framework for the cored well that consists of six stratigraphic intervals. The sequence stratigraphic framework …

Avoidance Of Token-Loss By Pigeons, James E. Cook
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The response-dependent delivery and removal of tokens can reinforce and punish the responding of humans and nonhuman animals. The responding of humans can be maintained by the avoidance of token-losses, but this has not been demonstrated with nonhuman animals. Across three experiments, it was demonstrated that the responding of pigeons could be maintained in a token-loss avoidance arrangement. Tokens were delivered response-independently at the beginning of a token-loss avoidance period. Tokens were scheduled to be removed on a variable-cycle schedule. Responding canceled scheduled token-losses. Those tokens that remained were exchangeable for food during programmed exchange periods. Several parameters of the …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Boundary conditions play a key role in the evolution and morphology of flame fronts, especially when combustion occurs in narrow chambers. The burning intensity and the flame-generated flow can be significantly modified by the momentum and energy transferred at the walls, which are further modified by the exothermal nature of the process. In this work, the effect of the wall roughness and thermal conditions on the flame propagation is explored. Specifically, conduits with and without obstacles, having adiabatic or isothermal walls, are investigated.;Wall friction constitutes one of the main reasons of spontaneous flame acceleration in narrow pipes. Although this phenomenon …
