The Use Of Cultural Memory In Reinforcing Contemporary Russian Patriotism: A Case Study Of The Film "Stalingrad" (2013), Laura Roop Jan 2015

The Use Of Cultural Memory In Reinforcing Contemporary Russian Patriotism: A Case Study Of The Film "Stalingrad" (2013), Laura Roop

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

According to cultural memory theory, cultural tools such as texts and symbols transmit the knowledge of meaningful historical events to groups. These cultural tools reproduce history by cultivating narratives that are relevant in a given time, and thus reflect the ongoing concerns over memory. The purpose of communicating significant turning points in a nation's history is to create a system of values, a self-image and the continuity of a nation. Films are considered to be both textual and visual representations of cultural memory. Since memory and commemoration of the Second World War have gone through many changes, one has to …

Synchronization Of Coupled And Periodically Forced Chemical Oscillators, Razan Snari Jan 2015

Synchronization Of Coupled And Periodically Forced Chemical Oscillators, Razan Snari

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Physiological rhythms are essential in all living organisms. Such rhythms are regulated through the interactions of many cells. Deviation of a biological system from its normal rhythms can lead to physiological maladies. The tremor and symptoms associated with Parkinson's disease are thought to emerge from abnormal synchrony of neuronal activity within the neural network of the brain. Deep brain stimulation is a therapeutic technique that can remove this pathological synchronization by the application of a periodic desynchronizing signal. Herein, we used the photosensitive Belousov--Zhabotinsky (BZ) chemical reaction to test the mechanism of deep brain stimulation. A collection of oscillators are …

Partial Oxidation Of Hydrocarbons In A Segmented Bed Using Oxide-Based Catalysts And Oxygen-Conducting Supports, Mark W. Smith

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Two objectives for the catalytic reforming of hydrocarbons to produce synthesis gas are investigated herein: (1) the effect of oxygen-conducting supports with partially substituted mixed-metal oxide catalysts, and (2) a segmented bed approach using different catalyst configurations. Excess carbon deposition was the primary cause of catalyst deactivation, and was the focus of the experiments for both objectives. The formation and characterization of deposited carbon was examined after reaction for one of the selected catalysts to determine the quantity and location of the carbon on the catalyst surface leading to deactivation.;A nickel-substituted barium hexaaluminate (BNHA), with the formula BaAl 11.6Ni0.4O18.8, and …

Estonian Displaced Persons In Post-War Germany, Signe Tonismae

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The immediate aftermath of the Second World War brought about considerable uncertainty and a great number of displaced persons (DPs) to post-war Germany. During that time around 40 000 Estonians found themselves in occupied Germany. The aim of this thesis is to provide an in-depth understanding of lives of Estonian DPs in post-war Germany by examining the U.S. occupation zone and to determine how people contextualized their experience in the broader post-war environment. For these purposes two research questions were set: (1) How honestly did Estonian DPs look at their own past history? and (2) How did Estonian DPs represent …

Regulation And Function Of The Cancer Stem Cell Transcription Factors Gli1 And Kruppel-Like Factor 4, Daniel B. Vanderbilt Jan 2015

Regulation And Function Of The Cancer Stem Cell Transcription Factors Gli1 And Kruppel-Like Factor 4, Daniel B. Vanderbilt

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Transcription factors are crucial to the normal and pathologic biology of cells. Aberrant genetic regulation underlies all facets of cancer, including metastasis, therapeutic resistance, and other clinically relevant manifestations. Kruppel-like factor 4 (KLF4) and GLI1, transcription factors that interact with DNA through conserved zinc finger domains, are implicated in human malignancy. The stability of GLI1 protein is a central determinant of Hedgehog pathway signaling output, and is regulated through interaction with the F-box protein beta-TrCP. In pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, GLI1 may be activated by oncogenic mechanisms. While KLF4 is not specific to any discrete signal pathway, KLF4 is well-characterized in …

The Cold Culture Wars: The Fight For Democratic Education In Post-War New York, Brandon C. Williams Jan 2015

The Cold Culture Wars: The Fight For Democratic Education In Post-War New York, Brandon C. Williams

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation explores how the American public school system has become the primary institution for citizens to project, contest, or affirm their values. Primarily, this revolves around competing ideas of democratic education. After World War II, politicians utilized the schools to propagate American democracy, while citizens viewed education as a means to reconstruct the post-war democratic order. Although most representatives acknowledged the schools needed to guard democracy and stem totalitarian aggression, few agreed on how education should accomplish such a feat. Consequently, "democratic education" deviated from its theoretical moorings and found a newly nationalistic expression in a Cold War era …

First Year Biomass Production Following Application Of Various Size Strip Thinnings In A Young Hardwood Stand In West Virginia., Ashlee Martin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Strip thinning can reduce stand density to promote better growth of residual trees and has potential to create a woody bioenergy feedstock in addition to enhancing and maintaining early successional habitat for wildlife. However, little research has been conducted on strip thinning within young hardwood stands to determine if these are viable attributes of strip thinning. The goal of this study was to assess the first year biomass production after strip thinning among three different cut strip widths (8 ft, 12 ft, and 16 ft) in a 22-year-old mixed mesophytic hardwood stand. Woody biomass production from stump sprouts and true …

Comparisons Of Single Drop Impact Simulations With Experiments, Krishna Teja Medam Jan 2015

Comparisons Of Single Drop Impact Simulations With Experiments, Krishna Teja Medam

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

As the size of electronic equipment is reduced, the ability to reject waste heat is also reduced due to smaller component surface areas, thereby affecting the component performance and finally leading to the damage of the component. Spray cooling offers a means to achieve high rates of heat transfer from microelectronic components and other high energy density devices.;As a first step in investigating spray cooling, a single liquid drop impacting onto a thin liquid film was studied at isothermal conditions. 2D axisymmetric cases were simulated with ANSYS Fluent and 3D cases with OpenFOAM using the Volume of Fluid (VOF) model. …

Predicting Adolescents' Intentions To Engage In Fire Risk Behaviors: An Application Of The Theory Of Planned Behavior, Janelle M. Mentrikoski

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Burn injuries are a serious health concern for youth. In particular, adolescents are at risk for sustaining burn injuries, with recent estimates suggesting that adolescents make up nearly 30% of the burn injury cases treated in emergency departments in the United States. Despite the prevalence of burn injuries in adolescents, little research has examined possible correlates of adolescent fire-risk behavior (e.g., using accelerants to start a fire). To facilitate a better understanding of adolescent fire-risk behavior, the current study will use Ajzen's Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) as a theoretical model. The TPB suggests that an individual's attitude towards the …

The purpose of this study was to test components of the extended parallel process model (Witte, 1992) and psychological reactance theory (Brehm, 1966) using environmental hazards as a primary threat, rather than a personal health threat. In addition, this study examined the effect that response costs, ego involvement, and personal connection had on individuals' self-efficacy to perform a behavior. Participants (N = 157) watched a short video that emphasized the environmental and health risks of coal as well as the benefits of using clean energy sources. One group of participants saw a recommended response encouraging them to contact a state …

Lead Exposure Of Obligate Avian Scavengers In Eastern North America, Shannon Behmke Jan 2015

Lead Exposure Of Obligate Avian Scavengers In Eastern North America, Shannon Behmke

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Lead is a toxic element within the body of living organisms. Lead poisoning cases still occur in both humans and wildlife on a regular basis in the United States. Although the harmful effects of lead within the body are well known, such as decreased IQ in children, increased renal dysfunction, hypertension, anemia, and other morbid and mortal consequences in humans and wildlife, lead continues to be used in anthropogenic activities today. Through the use of lead in ammunition and fishing sinkers, and its presence in coal-fired power plant and other industrial emissions, lead is dispersed throughout modern human and natural …

Acceleration Of Non-Equidiffusive Flames In Channels: Computational Simulations And Analytical Studies, Serdar A. Bilgili Jan 2015

Acceleration Of Non-Equidiffusive Flames In Channels: Computational Simulations And Analytical Studies, Serdar A. Bilgili

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

When a premixed flame front spreads in a narrow pipe, wall friction continuously distorts the flame shape. As a result, the flame front acquires a larger surface area, consumes more fuel per unit time and, thereby, propagates faster. While this mechanism of flame acceleration due to wall friction has widely been studied, especially within the last decade, the analytical and computational studies were mostly devoted to equidiffusive flames, where the Lewis number, defined as the thermal to mass diffusivity ratio, is unity, Le = 1. However, in reality thermal and mass diffusion are typically not balanced, especially in rich and …

Emotion Socialization And Autism Spectrum Disorder: The Role Of Disability Severity And Parental Attributions In Predicting Parents' Emotional Responses, Hilary R. Bougher

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The importance of parents in emotion socialization is highly established among children who are typically developing (Sheffield Morris, Silk, Steinberg, Myers, & Robinson, 2007). Child characteristics, such as child temperament and emotional reactivity, have been found to influence parenting (Bell & Chapman, 1986; Belsky, 1984). However, little is known about the emotion socialization practices of parents of children with special needs and how disability severity may influence these practices. Participants included 68 parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) (ages 3-11). Parents reported on three dimensions, using three questionnaires: disability severity via the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, 2nd edition …

Differences In Psychosexual Development Between Child And Peer Male Juvenile Sex Offenders, Colleen M. Lillard Jan 2015

Differences In Psychosexual Development Between Child And Peer Male Juvenile Sex Offenders, Colleen M. Lillard

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Juvenile sex offenders account for approximately 50% of child sex abuse cases and 20% of sexual assault cases in the United States. Researchers, in an attempt to better understand the etiology of this behavior, have examined typologies of juvenile sex offenders, including victim-age. Much of the research has compared juveniles who offended against children versus juveniles who have offended against peers/adults. Recent research has also compared these two groups with those juvenile sex offenders who offended against both children and peers (i.e., mixed offenders). Using data from psychological evaluations and the Multiphasic Sex Inventory- II (MSI-II; Nichols & Molinder, 2010), …

Old War, New Deal: Commemorative Landscapes, The National Park Service, And The 75th Anniversary Of The Civil War, Rebekah N. Oakes

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The 75th Anniversary of the American Civil War was both the last major anniversary influenced by living Civil War veterans, and the first commemoration to occur with a number of key Civil War battlefields under the administrative control of the National Park Service. Although largely overlooked by historians, remembrance of the Civil War in the 1930s represented a key transition from commemoration primarily for the veterans of the conflict to a wider commemoration, finding from the Civil War a usable past and a landscape of national memorialization. Through this process, administrative and interpretive shifts changed the very purpose of Civil …

Background: Nearly half a million premature infants are born in the United States each year. The majority of infants born prematurely are admitted to neonatal intensive care units (NICU) for specialized care. Clinical problems related to parental stress due to preterm birth and NICU admission extend beyond feelings of simple stress by parents to that of helplessness, insufficient knowledge, decreased bonding, depression, and the potential development of Post Partum-Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Furthermore, these clinical problems can extend to the child. Decreased bonding can cause the child to have clinical and subclinical anxiety disorders; and may further equate to future …

Evaluation And Analysis Of The Apically Extruded Gutta Percha Using Thermoplasticized Technique As Sole Obturation Method (Squirting), Pejman Parsa Jan 2015

Evaluation And Analysis Of The Apically Extruded Gutta Percha Using Thermoplasticized Technique As Sole Obturation Method (Squirting), Pejman Parsa

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Introduction.;Preventing apical periodontitis has been the cornerstone of endodontic therapy. For decades, clinicians have been challenged by the microorganisms present in the root canal system to help host defenses heal the apical tissues. Root canals that have been biomechanically cleaned, shaped and disinfected by instrumentation, irrigation and medication are in need of obturation. To the experienced practitioner it is prudent that a three-dimensional obturation that is fluid tight be placed in order to prevent oral and apical micro leakage. Many different techniques and materials are advocated to achieve this type of fill. The most commonly used material with the longest …

Solar Electric Propulsion Triple-Satellite-Aided Capture With Mars Flyby, Sean Patrick Jan 2015

Solar Electric Propulsion Triple-Satellite-Aided Capture With Mars Flyby, Sean Patrick

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Triple-Satellite-aided-capture sequences use gravity-assists at three of Jupiter's four massive Galilean moons to reduce the DeltaV required to enter into Jupiter orbit. A triple-satellite-aided capture at Callisto, Ganymede, and Io is proposed to capture a SEP spacecraft into Jupiter orbit from an interplanetary Earth-Jupiter trajectory that employs low-thrust maneuvers. The principal advantage of this method is that it combines the ISP efficiency of ion propulsion with nearly impulsive but propellant-free gravity assists.;For this thesis, two main chapters are devoted to the exploration of low-thrust triple-flyby capture trajectories. Specifically, the design and optimization of these trajectories are explored heavily. The first …

Sensor Placement Algorithms For Process Efficiency Maximization, Prokash Paul Jan 2015

Sensor Placement Algorithms For Process Efficiency Maximization, Prokash Paul

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Even though the senor placement problem has been studied for process plants, it has been done for minimizing the number of sensors, minimizing the cost of the sensor network, maximizing the reliability, or minimizing the estimation errors. In the existing literature, no work has been reported on the development of a sensor network design (SND) algorithm for maximizing efficiency of the process. The SND problem for maximizing efficiency requires consideration of the closed-loop system, which is unlike the open-loop systems that have been considered in previous works. In addition, work on the SND problem for a large fossil energy plant …
