Variable-Interval And Variable-Ratio Schedules Of Punishment By Timeout From Positive Reinforcement, Ezra G. Hall Jan 2015

Variable-Interval And Variable-Ratio Schedules Of Punishment By Timeout From Positive Reinforcement, Ezra G. Hall

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Timeout punishment is among the most commonly reported disciplinary procedures (Barkin, Scheindlin, Ip, Richardson, & Finch, 2007). Despite the frequent use of timeout, little basic research has systematically examined different schedule effects of timeout from positive reinforcement. Using pigeons as subjects, the current series of experiments arranged variable schedules of timeout from positive reinforcement within a multiple-schedule arrangement where 20-s timeouts were response-dependent, response-independent, and delayed. Experiment 1 used a within-subject yoking procedure to compare schedules of variable-ratio (VR) and yoked-interval (YI) timeouts. Experiment 2 arranged separate parametric analyses of variable-interval (VI) and VR schedules of timeout. Within-session, yoked-control components …

The Longest Common Subsequence Via Generalized Suffix Trees, Tazin Afrin Jan 2015

The Longest Common Subsequence Via Generalized Suffix Trees, Tazin Afrin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Given two strings S1 and S 2, finding the longest common subsequence (LCS) is a classical problem in computer science. Many algorithms have been proposed to find the longest common subsequence between two strings. The most common and widely used method is the dynamic programming approach, which runs in quadratic time and takes quadratic space. Other algorithms have been introduced later to solve the LCS problem in less time and space. In this work, we present a new algorithm to find the longest common subsequence using the generalized suffix tree and directed acyclic graph.;The Generalized suffix tree (GST) is the …

Remote Sensing Based Predictive Decision Support System For Assessment Of Environmental Conditions For Epidemic Cholera, Haidar Shakuir Aldaach Jan 2015

Remote Sensing Based Predictive Decision Support System For Assessment Of Environmental Conditions For Epidemic Cholera, Haidar Shakuir Aldaach

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Cholera, a water borne diarrheal disease, is strongly associated with environmental processes. However, quantitative linkages of environmental processes with cholera and climate is still emerging. Linking diseases such as cholera with climate will aid in development of models that can predict spatial and temporal outbreaks in resource constrained regions of the globe. With the limited efficacy of cholera vaccines, it is necessary to develop mechanisms to predict cholera occurrence and thereafter devise intervention strategies for mitigating impacts of the disease. Hydroclimatic processes, primarily precipitation and air temperature are related to epidemic and episodic outbreak of cholera. However, due to coarse …

Does Engagement In Pleasant Events Mediate The Relation Between Physical Disability And Affective Outcomes In Older Adults?, Patricia M. Bamonti Jan 2015

Does Engagement In Pleasant Events Mediate The Relation Between Physical Disability And Affective Outcomes In Older Adults?, Patricia M. Bamonti

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The current study examined potential mediators of the association between physical disability and depressive symptoms, along with positive mental health variables, including meaning in life and positive affect, within the framework of an empirically supported model of depression---the behavioral model of depression (Lewinsohn, 1985). The behavioral model of depression posits that reduced contact with positive reinforcement in the environment (i.e., engagement in pleasant events) precipitates and maintains depressive symptoms (Lewinsohn et al., 1985). Treatment studies have demonstrated the efficacy of interventions based on the behavioral model of depression in older adults (Cuijpers et al., 2007; Dimidjian et al., 2006; Hopko …

Coal Quality Management Model For A Dome Storage (Ds-Cqmm), Manuel Alejandro Badani Prado Jan 2015

Coal Quality Management Model For A Dome Storage (Ds-Cqmm), Manuel Alejandro Badani Prado

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Coal quality (ash, sulfur, moisture and BTU) is one of the key aspects for both coal mines and power plants. Mines invest time as well as economic and technological resources in order to manage coal quality for final use in power plants. In order to deliver uniform coal quality to the power plant, there is a need for a real-time monitoring of coal quality from the mine to the coal stockpiles. The specific problem represents the process of stacking the coal inside the enclosed facility such as a dome. The process of stacking coal inside a dome generates the unique …

Theory And Simulations Of Incomplete Reconnection During Sawteeth Due To Diamagnetic Effects, Matthew Thomas Beidler Jan 2015

Theory And Simulations Of Incomplete Reconnection During Sawteeth Due To Diamagnetic Effects, Matthew Thomas Beidler

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Tokamaks use magnetic fields to confine plasmas to achieve fusion; they are the leading approach proposed for the widespread production of fusion energy. The sawtooth crash in tokamaks limits the core temperature, adversely impacts confinement, and seeds disruptions. Adequate knowledge of the physics governing the sawtooth crash and a predictive capability of its ramifications has been elusive, including an understanding of incomplete reconnection, i.e., why sawteeth often cease prematurely before processing all available magnetic flux. In this dissertation, we introduce a model for incomplete reconnection in sawtooth crashes resulting from increasing diamagnetic effects in the nonlinear phase of magnetic reconnection. …

Hydrogel Tracer Beads As Potential Proxies For Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids In Karst: Development Of An Optical Quantification Method For Fluorescent Beads, Habib Bravo-Ruiz

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Sinkholes and sinking streams are examples of karst features that can serve as direct pathways for contaminants, including non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPLs), to quickly enter karst aquifers. Once NAPLs are in karst aquifers, their fate and transport is difficult to predict and is not well understood. In this study, floating hydrogel tracer beads (HTBs) are developed and tested to help gain a better understanding of the fate and transport of NAPLs. The HTBs are formed by cross-linked sodium alginate polymers that can be made with different fluorescent pigments and density-modifying additives. The focus of this research was on the development …

An Analysis Of Treatment Patterns, Receipt Of Guideline-Concordant Care, And Survival Outcomes Among Elderly Women With Non-Metastatic Breast Cancer Using The Seer-Medicare Linked Dataset, Traci Lemasters

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Breast cancer (BC) is the 2nd most commonly diagnosed type of cancer in the United States (US) and the 1st among women, with 57% of incident cases in those age > 60 years. Relative to other cancers, BC has high survival rates, with a 89% 5-year overall survival rate. High survival rates are due to improvements in disease understanding, treatment, and earlier stage at diagnosis from increased routine BC screening. Yet, disparities in treatment and survival outcomes persist. Epidemiologic studies suggest that elderly women experience disparities uniquely associated with increasing age and comorbidity, in addition to those associated with socio-demographic characteristics, …

A Metamodel-Based Monte Carlo Simulation Approach For Responsive Production Planning Of Manufacturing Systems, Minqi Li Jan 2015

A Metamodel-Based Monte Carlo Simulation Approach For Responsive Production Planning Of Manufacturing Systems, Minqi Li

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Production planning is concerned with finding a release plan of jobs into the manufacturing system so that its actual outputs over time match the customer demand with the least cost. The biggest challenge of production planning lies in the difficulty to quantify the performance of a release plan, which is the necessary basis for plan optimization. Triggered by an input plan over a time horizon, the system outputs, work in process (WIP) and job departures, are non-stationary bivariate time series that interact with customer demand (another time series), resulting in the fulfillment/non-fulfillment of demand and in the holding cost of …

Propagating Precipitation Waves In Hydrogels, Darrell Collison Jan 2015

Propagating Precipitation Waves In Hydrogels, Darrell Collison

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In 1896, Raphael E. Liesegang discovered that precipitation reactions may produce striking precipi- tation rings and bands. More than a century later, propagating precipitation waves were discovered in similar reactions. The bands and rings discovered by Liesegang are static, but traveling precipitation waves exhibit complex spatiotemporal dynamics. Traveling waves are widespread and occur in both living and nonliving systems. Examples include calcium waves propagating through Xenopus laevis oocytes, cyclic AMP waves in colonies of Dictyostelium discordium cells, and spiral waves in propagating flames fronts. Recently, traveling waves were identified in a precipitation reaction involving AlCl3 and NaOH. The propagating precipitation …

Hierarchically Porous Carbon Materials And Limn2o 4 Electrodes For Electrochemical Supercapacitors, Shimeng Hao Jan 2015

Hierarchically Porous Carbon Materials And Limn2o 4 Electrodes For Electrochemical Supercapacitors, Shimeng Hao

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Increasing energy density of electrochemical capacitors (ECs) is crucial for their applications in energy storage devices requiring short peak power pulses as well as long-term operation. ECs are operated via two primary charge mechanisms, that is, the electrochemical double-layer capacitance and the pseudocapacitance. In the thesis, the carbon materials and LiMn2O 4, which generate double-layer capacitance and pseudocapacitance, respectively, have been investigated. The effects of specific surface area, pore structure and surface functionality on the energy storage performance of ECS have been studied.;Micro-porous (<2 nm) carbon with pores inaccessible to the solvated ions may limit the ion diffusion, resulting in a low rate capability. Hence this work attempts to generate hierarchical macropores/mesopores/micropores in the electrode material. Flexible, self-sustained and hierarchical porous carbon nanofibers (CNFs) are fabricated using terephthalic acid as the sacrificial agent. After sublimation and carbonization, the electrospun mat is converted to a hierarchical porous carbon framework. The high specific capacitance and good rate capability are associated with the unique hierarchical porous structure of the as-prepared CNFs. Both the outer fiber surface and inner porous structure can be accessible for charge accumulation through pores on the surface. Hierarchical macropores/mesopores in the fiber also help accelerate the ion-diffusion into inner micropores.;Besides fossil resources, renewable biomass has also been explored as the source material for supercapacitors in the present work. Lignin, the major aromatic constituent of plant and woods, is utilized as the carbon precursor to prepare the mesoporous lignin-char. The lignin-derived carbon is prepared by taking an advantage of the organic-organic self-assembly method, which allows the direct formation of mesoporous polymer composite from carbon precursor and block copolymer, and conversion to porous carbon by carbonization. Hierarchically porous carbon (HPC) with pores at different scales has been obtained after alkali activation. The experimental results show that the appropriate pore size distribution can ensure high power density and high energy density due to the short diffusion distance and the minimized electric resistance. Utilization of biomass as the source materials for supercapacitors will reduce the costs for fabrication of energy storage devices.;Developing asymmetric supercapacitors is an alternative effective way to obtain high energy density for an enlarged potential window and additional pseudocapacitance. LiMn2O4 nanoparticles have been fabricated with a facile and cost-effective method using carbon black as the template. The spinel structured LiMn2O4 exhibits a high specific capacitance in a three-electrode system. An asymmetric supercapacitor has been made with the as-prepared LiMn2O4 nanoparticle as the cathode and the commercial activated carbon as the anode in a Li 2SO4 aqueous solution. The asymmetric supercapacitor shows a good energy capacity and excellent cycling stability.

On The Roles Of Drosophila Notch Signaling And Atonal Autoregulation In The Specification Of R8 Photoreceptors, Adam T. Majot Jan 2015

On The Roles Of Drosophila Notch Signaling And Atonal Autoregulation In The Specification Of R8 Photoreceptors, Adam T. Majot

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Drosophila retinogenesis has long served as a paradigm of tissue patterning. Notch, an anciently conserved signaling pathway, is critical to both the formation of and proper spacing of founding R8 photoreceptors. Notch is intimately interwoven into the activity of Atonal (Ato), a proneural basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) that is required for R8 specification. Ato is expressed through dual enhancers: ato-3' and 5'-ato. ato-3' is activated in response to Notch-independent signaling cues whereas 5'-ato exhibits complex dependence on Notch signaling. First, Notch is required for 5'-ato activation, eliciting formation of Ato intermediate groups (IGs, evenly spaced clusters of 10--20 cells). Subsequently, Notch …

Vulture Flight Behavior Driven By Uplift Availability At Local And Continental Scales, Julie Mallon Jan 2015

Vulture Flight Behavior Driven By Uplift Availability At Local And Continental Scales, Julie Mallon

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Understanding how animals move in response to their environment is a fundamental question in ecology. Soaring species, which rely on environmentally generated uplift to forage and migrate, should be especially sensitive to changing weather and climatic conditions. Changes in uplift distribution or strength can have energetic implications and restrict movement capacity for soaring species. Poor weather conditions can shorten foraging time or slow migration progress. To increase mobility, birds can switch to flapping or soar using another uplift type. Use of uplift, however, is associated with certain flight altitudes and movement speeds. Switching uplift types will affect a bird's ecological …

Suicidal Ideation, Attempts, And Associated Psychosocial Risk And Protective Factors In American Indian Youth And Young Adults, Karen Manzo Jan 2015

Suicidal Ideation, Attempts, And Associated Psychosocial Risk And Protective Factors In American Indian Youth And Young Adults, Karen Manzo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Introduction. Research consistently shows that suicidal ideation and attempts are more prevalent among American Indian youth and young adults than youth and young adults in other racial/ethnic groups. Many of the associated psychosocial risk and protective factors are shared across racial/ethnic groups; however, for most of them, the prevalence is highest in American Indian youth. Research on the relation between suicide risk and culturally unique risk (e.g., childhood adversity, discrimination, parenting, unresolved grief, out-of-home placement) and protective factors (e.g., enculturation, cultural values, spirituality) in American Indian youth and young adults is limited. The goal of this research was to examine …
