Analgesic And Anti-Inflammatory Effects Of Monoacylglycerol Lipase Inhibition In Mice Subjected To Collagen-Induced Arthritis, Sara R. Nass
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the most prevalent chronic inflammatory joint disease, affecting approximately 1% of the world population. This autoimmune disease is characterized by pain, stiffness, swelling, and breakdown of cartilage in synovial joints. Current RA analgesic treatments (i.e., pain reducing drugs) are ineffective or induce negative side effects, and so there are many concerted efforts to discover new RA treatments. Cannabinoids have analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties; however, the challenge remains to harness the medical potential of cannabinoids without inducing negative psychoactive effects (e.g., cognitive deficits, emotional disruption, and abuse potential). An alternative approach focuses on the endogenously produced cannabinoids …
Evaluation Of The Antidepressant Potential Of Dextromethorphan, Linda Nguyen
Evaluation Of The Antidepressant Potential Of Dextromethorphan, Linda Nguyen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Depression affects more than 350 million people and is the leading cause of disability worldwide. Major challenges in the management of depression remain the 4-12 weeks of delayed efficacy and 30% of patients who are resistant to the therapeutic effects of current pharmaceutical treatments. We herein examined whether dextromethorphan (DM) may be able to take on these challenges, because 1) it has overlapping pharmacology with ketamine, which has shown rapid (within 24 hours) antidepressant effects, even in treatment-resistant individuals; 2) unlike ketamine with its notable abuse liability and adverse effects, DM is an over-the-counter antitussive with a high safety margin; …
Pyrolytic Fate Of Synthetic Cannabinoids, Corey Andrew Nida
Pyrolytic Fate Of Synthetic Cannabinoids, Corey Andrew Nida
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Since the introduction of herbal incense products into the illicit drug market, one of the most concerning factors has been the uncertainty regarding their health effects. Side effects such as anxiety/agitation, increased heartbeat, hallucinations, and suicidal tendencies are commonly reported with the use of products containing synthetic cannabinoid. However, a largely unknown toxicity and pharmacology is still associated with synthetic cannabinoids and long-term health effects have yet to be discussed.;Prior scientific studies have not focused on the big-picture in terms of the pyrolysis of traditional drugs of abuse that are smoked or the relatively new synthetic cannabinoids. Numerous agencies and …
Design Programs For Highwall Mining Operations, Ming Fan
Design Programs For Highwall Mining Operations, Ming Fan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Highwall mining is a hybrid of surface mining and underground mining methods, and is often the only feasible method to recover the coal reserves in the central Appalachian coalfields due to the steep terrain and the closely spaced multiple thin coal seams. Compared to the mountain-top-removal, contour, auger, and underground mining methods, application of the highwall mining method can reduce the environmental impacts, increase the recovery ratio of coal reserves, and enhance mine safety as well as productivity. Therefore, it is probable that highwall mining will be a dominant method for extracting the high-value coal resources in the Appalachian coalfields. …

Mechanical And Microstructure Study Of Nickel-Based Ods Alloys Processed By Mechano-Chemical Bonding And Ball Milling, Belachew N. Amare
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Due to the need to increase the efficiency of modern power plants, land-based gas turbines are designed to operate at high temperature creating harsh environments for structural materials. The elevated turbine inlet temperature directly affects the materials at the hottest sections, which includes combustion chamber, blades, and vanes. Therefore, the hottest sections should satisfy a number of material requirements such as high creep strength, ductility at low temperature, high temperature oxidation and corrosion resistance. Such requirements are nowadays satisfied by implementing superalloys coated by high temperature thermal barrier coating (TBC) systems to protect from high operating temperature required to obtain …

Father Involvements Influence On Mother's Perceptions Of Parenting In An Appalachian Sample, Kalynn B. Amick
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Father involvement in parenting can have a positive influence on both children and mothers. During times of economic stress it may also add to the resources available and make a positive contribution to mothers parenting practices. In this study it was considered how father involvement may influence mother's perceptions of parenting. Specifically, this study looks at father involvement in an Appalachian sample. Five participants completed questionnaires which answered questions about mothers' present perceptions of parenting and father involvement. No significant associations were found between father involvement and mother's perceptions of parenting. Limitations include small sample size and a lack of …
Developing A Grid-Based Surrogate Reservoir Model Using Artificial Intelligence, Shohreh Amini
Developing A Grid-Based Surrogate Reservoir Model Using Artificial Intelligence, Shohreh Amini
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Reservoir simulation models are the major tools for studying fluid flow behavior in hydrocarbon reservoirs. They are now being used extensively in performing any kind of studies related to fluid production/injection in hydrocarbon bearing formations. Reservoir simulation models are constructed based on geological models, which are developed by integrating data from geology, geophysics, and petro-physics. This data comes from observation, measurements, and interpretations.;Integration of maximum data from geology, geophysics, and petro-physics, contributes to building geologically complex and more realistic models. As the complexity of a reservoir simulation model increases, so does the computation time. Therefore, to perform any comprehensive study …
Institutional Decolonization: The Internationalization Of The Conflict Over Organized Labor In British Guiana, 1946-1961, Joshua David Esposito
Institutional Decolonization: The Internationalization Of The Conflict Over Organized Labor In British Guiana, 1946-1961, Joshua David Esposito
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation argues that an internationalized struggle for control of British Guiana's trade unions after 1946 resulted in institutional dysfunction and violence in the early 1960s. Some Guianese nationalists, who eventually became leaders of the People's Progressive Party (PPP), wanted to replace the institutions imported from Great Britain with trade unionism geared towards a Guianese version of communism. Conversely, reformist Guianese labor leaders were intent on establishing a left-leaning capitalist framework of labor relations, primarily based on a British model of unionism. Guianese unionists' ideological proclivities shaped their international affiliations, adding a transnational dimension to the struggle between the colony's …

Assessing And Meeting Residents' Needs: An Evaluation Of Residence Hall Programming, Michael J. Beck
Assessing And Meeting Residents' Needs: An Evaluation Of Residence Hall Programming, Michael J. Beck
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In this qualitative study, I examine how programming in college residence halls does and does not meet the needs of residents and resident assistants. Using focus group and individual interview data, I structure my analysis using Maslow's (1954) hierarchy of needs. I suggest that residence hall programming---academic, social, or a hybrid of the two---is most valuable for its ability to meet residents' needs related to belongingness but that residence hall staff must place more explicit emphasis on residents' growth needs in order for self-actualization to be supported.
Variable Data Collection Rate System For A Wildlife Behavior Monitor, Sheldon Blackshire
Variable Data Collection Rate System For A Wildlife Behavior Monitor, Sheldon Blackshire
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Behavior monitors typically collect data, and consequently spend energy, at fixed intervals. For devices that utilize energy harvesting, a fixed data collection interval may result in inefficient battery usage due to variability in available solar radiation. Work was performed for a system capable of adjusting a data collection rate, proportional to changes in battery charge, such that data obtained was maximized without sacrificing battery energy sustainability. Energy consumption, of an actual behavior monitor, was modeled to aid in design and evaluation of a changeable data collection rate system. Model validation was performed by comparing simulated to empirical data for battery …

This research explored the extent to which the campus climate at a military friendly college or university promoted student service members' and student veterans' success of their time to degree in transition following separation from the Armed Forces and the impact of this specific climate on the cultivation of camaraderie in higher education. A mixed methods design incorporated focus group narratives from seven participants (n =7) and information from a web-based survey completed by one hundred and seventy respondents (n =170). Triangulation of qualitative and quantitative data resulted in complementary information and insight of the military friendly school phenomenon at …
Family Descriptions Of The Influence Of Cultural Factors On Transitions In Serious Illness, Veronica Gallo
Family Descriptions Of The Influence Of Cultural Factors On Transitions In Serious Illness, Veronica Gallo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Nearly 65 million Americans served as care provider to an ill or disabled adult, and over 1.6 million Americans participated in the care of a family member in hospice. Families experience transitions, or changes, throughout the serious illness trajectory. Throughout transitions in serious illness, families participate in the care, support, and decision-making for their ill family member. Families' lives are often disrupted during this time and families experience emotional, physical and psychological distress during transitions. In spite of this, families are rarely included in care, and little is known about how families make sense of transitions. Culture, and the factors …
Cholesterol Modulates Huntingtin Binding To And Aggregation On Lipid Membranes, Xiang Gao
Cholesterol Modulates Huntingtin Binding To And Aggregation On Lipid Membranes, Xiang Gao
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Huntington disease is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder. The abnormally long CAG-repeats in the huntingtin gene that encode an expanded polyglutamine stretch which promotes self-assemble of huntingtin into different aggregation species that are disease related. Huntingtin intimately interacts with a variety of lipid membranes. Lipid composition is altered in HD, especially cholesterol content. Here we investigate how cholesterol content modulates the interaction between huntingtin and lipid membranes. TBLE/PDA binding assay is performed to test the binding affinity of huntingtin with lipid bilayers containing different amount of cholesterol. As the cholesterol content increases, the extent of huntingtin binding to lipid bilayers …
A Good Persuasion: Becoming Lysander In William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream", Landon Green
A Good Persuasion: Becoming Lysander In William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream", Landon Green
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
"Lysander" is likely a title borrowed from the ancient Spartan admiral whose naval command was crucial to the resolution of the Peloponnesian War (Plutarch). His exploits as a Spartan navarch and steward against the forces of Athens, and then Thebes in the Corinthian War, were romanticized, as were many of the legends and history of Greece and Rome, by the time of William Shakespeare's writing of A Midsummer Night's Dream . Shakespeare must have felt it appropriate to set his fantasy romance in Athens, and to name the plot propellant lover after one of its most renowned conquerors. Lysander, for …
Myosin Ii Isoforms In Breast Cancer: Role Of Contractility In Matrix Organization, Cell Migration, And Endothelial Barrier Function, Bridget Ruth Hindman
Myosin Ii Isoforms In Breast Cancer: Role Of Contractility In Matrix Organization, Cell Migration, And Endothelial Barrier Function, Bridget Ruth Hindman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Breast cancer is a devastating and complicated disease. A large proportion of breast cancer related deaths are due to metastasis. Metastasis is when cancer cells leave the primary tumor, travel through the bloodstream, and proliferate in distant sites. Cell contractility is involved in a number of cellular processes associated with metastasis including matrix organization, tumor cell migration, and endothelial cell barrier function. The main regulator of contractility in nonmuscle cells is nonmuscle myosin II. There are three isoforms of this protein: myosin IIA, IIB, and IIC. The specific roles of the individual isoforms in cancer progression and metastasis have yet …
Gendering Labor: How Foreign Direct Investment Affects State Behavior Towards Female Labor In South And Southeast Asia, Ritu Dhungana
Gendering Labor: How Foreign Direct Investment Affects State Behavior Towards Female Labor In South And Southeast Asia, Ritu Dhungana
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study examines the partnership between foreign capital (FDI) and state in manipulating women's labor. In this dissertation I have two research questions: My first research question is to determine whether the interaction between states and FDI renders workers vulnerable and unprotected. Other scholars have shown that states have been willing to relax labor laws (and offer non labor-related incentives) in order to attract FDI. My hypothesis is that cultural patriarchy intensifies this relationship between states and FDI, and further weakens the labor laws. My second research question is to identify the causal factors that bring about change in the …

Development Of A Reference Dataset To Evaluate Pems Post-Processing Software, Hemanth K. Kappanna
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Since the implementation of in-use emissions standards, an outcome of the consent decree between heavy-duty diesel engine manufacturers and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), there has been an increased interest in the research and development of portable emissions measurement systems (PEMS) that are capable of analyzing exhaust emissions continuously while a vehicle or equipment powered by an internal combustion engine is performing its intended vocation. Ultimately for an engine to pass in-use emissions requirements, the brake specific emissions of regulated pollutants measured over valid Not-to-Exceed (NTE) events must be less than or equal to 1.25 or 1.5 times the engine …
Nondestructive Evaluation Of Corrosion In Reinforced Concrete Structures With Or Without Frp Wraps, Jonas Kavi
Nondestructive Evaluation Of Corrosion In Reinforced Concrete Structures With Or Without Frp Wraps, Jonas Kavi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Reinforced concrete is one of the most widely used construction materials for infrastructure applications across the world due to its reasonable durability and competitive cost. One of the major concerns with reinforced concrete is the deterioration caused by premature corrosion of embedded steel reinforcement under the influence of moisture, chlorides, and oxygen in the field environment. Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP), a material with many engineering properties better than concrete and steel, is increasingly being used in the rehabilitation of aging infrastructure and the construction of new ones.;The need for maintenance and repair of bridges, buildings and other infrastructure for their …
Estimation Of Changes In Breech Face And Firing Pin Marks Over Consecutive Discharges And Its Impact On 2d Correlation Systems, Justin Kirk
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
When a firearm is discharged, the individual marks of that firearm's breech face and firing pin are imprinted onto the head of the cartridge case. The pattern of these individual marks is reproducible between test fires; however, over a large number of consecutive test fires, it has been observed that minute changes in these individual marks occur. These changes in individual marks have been shown to not affect an examiner in their ability to find an Identification or an Elimination, however, the effect that these changes have on Integrated Ballistic Identification System (IBISRTM) is largely unknown. If these changes in …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterases (PDEs) are a super-family of enzymes that regulate intracellular levels of the second messengers, cyclic AMP and cyclic GMP. Multiple PDEs have been shown to play vital roles in the central nervous system, with involvement in mood, reward mechanisms, and learning and memory. PDE2 is of special interest due to its high level of expression in forebrain regions, which are specifically implicated in mood and memory processes. In the first set of experiments, the potential role of PDE2 in depression- and anxiety-like behaviors was investigated using the forced swim test, tail suspension test, elevated plus maze, hole-board …

The Effect Of Organic Acids On The Formation And Behavior Of Synthesized Iron Hydroxides: Implications For Acid Mine Drainage Treatment, Marianne A. Mannix
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Acid mine drainage (AMD) is an environmental concern that is well known and studied in West Virginia and other mining regions. This pollution threat can be prevented and mitigated with current mining permitting regulations; however some mine waters require treatment, which generally consists of the neutralization of affected waters, resulting in the precipitation of characteristic 'floc' material. AMD floc consists of hydroxides of heavy metals; predominantly iron. This study simulated AMD treatment practices to evaluate the effects of common environmental controls; namely the presence of organic matter (OM) on the formation and settling behavior of Fe hydroxides with the ultimate …

Theory Of Work Adjustment And Student-Athletes' Transition Out Of Collegiate Sport, Jessica M. Leonard
Theory Of Work Adjustment And Student-Athletes' Transition Out Of Collegiate Sport, Jessica M. Leonard
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
While there are several person-environment fit vocational theories, Theory of Work Adjustment (TWA; Lofquist & Dawis, 1969) distinguishes itself by emphasizing the role of the work environment, not just the individual characteristics, in order to establish "mutual responsiveness" through career transitions. One particular population found both in popular media and peer-reviewed research to have potentially troublesome transitions are student-athletes and their transition out of collegiate sport, despite having the ability to plan for it before graduation. Some researchers have used TWA for those preparing for retirement (Harper & Shoffner, 2004; Hesketh et al. 2011), but no research to date has …
The Diverse Relationship Of Kruppel-Like Factors 4 And 5 In Breast Cancer, Mark K. Farrugia
The Diverse Relationship Of Kruppel-Like Factors 4 And 5 In Breast Cancer, Mark K. Farrugia
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Kruppel-like factors (KLFs) are transcription factors that participate in numerous biological functions, mainly impacting cell fate and differentiation. KLFs 4 and 5 (KLF4/5) are two highly studied members of this family, implicated to have diverse roles in both normal and abnormal physiology. KLF4 is primarily expressed in post-mitotic, differentiated epithelium and consistent with this observation, KLF4 exerts suppressive effects on cellular growth. Paradoxically, KLF4 can promote malignant features in both squamous cell carcinoma of the skin and breast cancer. We have attempted to better understand the nature of KLF4 in cancer via its relationship with KLF5. Although the two are …
Manifestations Of The Maimed: The Perception Of Wounded Soldiers In The Civil War North, William R. Feeney
Manifestations Of The Maimed: The Perception Of Wounded Soldiers In The Civil War North, William R. Feeney
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Civil War produced over 350,000 permanently disabled men, in addition to millions of other types of injuries and diseases. Yet, despite the overwhelming destruction to men's bodies the war also laid the foundation for a number of notable advances. These generative changes include increased collaboration between medical professionals, an estimable reputation for individual surgeons, a budding international reputation for American medicine, nursing opportunities for upper class women, a rise in volunteerism in the north, and a public acceptance of anatomical study and exhibition. For all the prolific effects of the war, however, these transformations all required one thing, the …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Maintaining the integrity and safety of civil infrastructures such as bridges, dams, tunnels and high-rise buildings is an essential task for civil engineers. Collapse or damage of these civil infrastructures may lead to a tremendous amount of injuries and casualties. To alleviate this situation, a real-time surveillance method enabled by visual sensing techniques is proposed in this thesis. The advances of applying visual sensing techniques, for instance, are allowing practical deployment for large extended systems in a more cost-effective way. Also, the image or video data can be easily used for long-term condition assessments.;The proposed method entails applying visual sensing …
Spatializing The Soil-Ecological Factorial: Data Driven Integrated Land Management Tools, Travis Nauman
Spatializing The Soil-Ecological Factorial: Data Driven Integrated Land Management Tools, Travis Nauman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Soils form the dynamic interface of many processes key to the function of terrestrial ecosystems. Many soil properties both influence and are influenced by activity of flora and fauna. Interactions between soils, biota, and climate determine the potential ecosystem services that a given unique ecological site (ES) can support, and how resilient a site is to various pressures and disturbances. Soil data are needed to fully understand how these factors interact, but because this data is difficult to obtain, existing soil maps are sometimes not detailed enough to fully explore relationships. Environmental raster GIS data layers were used to increase …
