Robust Video Stabilization And Quality Evaluation For Amateur Videos, Usha Kalyani Alluri

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Amateur videos captured by consumer-level devices (e.g., mobile phones, tablets, camcorders etc.) are often shaky, undirected and difficult to watch. Video stabilization techniques attempt to improve the video quality by filtering out unwanted jittering camera motions. Currently there are two key challenges in the field of video stabilization: robustness (e.g., in the presence of sophisticated camera motion including panning and rotation) and quality evaluation. Therefore the main contributions of this thesis are two-fold.;First, we present a robust video stabilization algorithm, which post-processes shaky video data and addresses the challenges of rapid camera panning and motion blur. Our algorithm is based …

Perceptions Of Urban Forestry Employers, Andrew Benjamin Jan 2016

Perceptions Of Urban Forestry Employers, Andrew Benjamin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Urban forestry is still a relatively new area of science and is still trying to establish itself as a legitimate scientific field and profession. Often urban forestry and arboriculture are conflated, and urban forestry has yet to achieve much of what arboriculture has in terms of recognition its and establishment. Landscape architects, traditional foresters, environmental scientists, horticulturalists all may find themselves in positions that can be classified in the urban forestry profession, which shows this lack of a standard definition for what is an urban forester. While there are many significant, potential benefits to a properly managed urban forest resource …

Well-Defined Lagrangian Flows For Absolutely Continuous Curves Of Probabilities On The Line, Mohamed H. Amsaad Jan 2016

Well-Defined Lagrangian Flows For Absolutely Continuous Curves Of Probabilities On The Line, Mohamed H. Amsaad

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

It is known from Fluid Mechanics that, the time-evolution of a probability measure describing some physical quantity (such as the density of a fluid) is related to the velocity of the fluid by the continuity equation. This is known as the Eulerian description of fluid flow. Dually, the Lagrangian description uses the flow of the velocity field to look at the individual trajectories of particles. In the case of flows on the real line, only recently has it been discovered that "some sort'' of dual Lagrangian flow consisting of monotone maps is always available to match an Eulerian flow. The …

Diversity Outreach In Major League Baseball: A Stakeholder Approach, Shaun M. Anderson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Despite the prevalence and magnitude of community engagement within professional sporting organizations, limited attention has been devoted to understanding the significance and impact of these activities to the success and survival of the organization (Garrard, 2007). Consequently, The focus of this dissertation focused on Major League Baseball (MLB) because this organization has established efforts for engaging individuals from diverse communities, but is still failing in their efforts of diversity and inclusion from an external stakeholder perspective. In 1989, MLB implemented programs (e.g., Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI), Urban Youth Academy (UYA) to help diversify their team roster and fan …

The Role Of Adenosine Monophosphate Activated Protein Kinase In Luteal Progesterone Production, Elizabeth Compton Bowdridge Jan 2015

The Role Of Adenosine Monophosphate Activated Protein Kinase In Luteal Progesterone Production, Elizabeth Compton Bowdridge

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2&agr;) has in vivo luteolytic actions on the bovine corpus luteum (CL). Although PGF2&agr; is utilized extensively in livestock to synchronize estrus, its actions in vitro are controversial and do not always result in a reduction in progesterone (P4) secretion. The mechanism of action of PGF2&agr; is thought to involve activation of the phospholipase C-Ca2+ pathway. The luteolytic actions of PGF2&agr; are mediated through an elevation of cytosolic Ca2+ involving activation of protein kinase C (PKC). Expression of PKC isozymes and calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase kinase 2 (CAMKK2) change as the CL develops to a mature stage. Either …

The Experience Of Transition As Told By First-Year, First-Generation Appalachian College Students, Jeffrey T. Bush Jan 2015

The Experience Of Transition As Told By First-Year, First-Generation Appalachian College Students, Jeffrey T. Bush

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The study examines the transitional experiences of Appalachian first-generation students during their first year of college. Because first-generation status, alone, has a negative affect on student persistence (Ishitani, 2003; Paulsen & Martin Lohfink, 2005), this phenomenological inquiry explores perceptions and experiences of separation and adjustment as expressed by students through semi-structured interviews with Tinto's Theory of Student Departure (1993) as a theoretical framework. Tinto's theory states that students arrive at college with personal attributes, as well as intentions and commitment, however it is their perception of their transition from home culture into the college that can affect persistence. This study …

A Computational Study On The Effects Of Dynamic Roughness Application To Separated Transitional Flows Affected By Adverse Pressure Gradient, Gennaro Campitelli Jan 2015

A Computational Study On The Effects Of Dynamic Roughness Application To Separated Transitional Flows Affected By Adverse Pressure Gradient, Gennaro Campitelli

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The study of transitional flows is considered crucial for many practical engineering applications. In fact, a comprehensive understanding of the laminar-turbulent transition phenomenon often helps to improve the overall performance of apparatuses such as airfoils, wind turbines, hulls and turbomachinery blades. In addition to understanding and prediction of transitional flows, active research continues in the area of boundary layer control, which includes control of phenomena such as flow separation and transition. For instance, optimum geometrical shaping may be followed by the adoption on the wall-surface of riblets to adjust pressure gradient and reduce drag. Further "flow control" may also be …

Role Of Mitochondria In Tnf-Alpha Neurotoxicity In Stroke, Danielle N. Doll Jan 2015

Role Of Mitochondria In Tnf-Alpha Neurotoxicity In Stroke, Danielle N. Doll

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

TNF-alpha is known to exacerbate infarct volume in animal models and elevated levels of TNF-alpha are correlated with worse outcomes in stroke patients. However, the mechanism is not well understood. TNF-alpha has been shown to be neurotoxic at high doses and after long exposure times which is not clinically relevant. Thus, we show for the first time that TNF-alpha at clinically relevant concentrations seen in the serum of stroke patients rapidly and profoundly decreases mitochondrial function resulting in neuronal cell death through activation of caspase 8 and cytochrome c release. A slight decrease in mitochondrial function is detrimental to neurons …

Nanoparticles, which are defined as a structure with at least one dimension between 1 and 100 nm, have the potential to be used in a variety of consumer products due to their improved functionality compared to similar particles of larger size. Their small size is associated with increased strength, improved catalytic properties, and increased reactivity; however, their size is also associated with increased toxicity in vitro and in vivo. Numerous toxicological studies have been conducted to determine the properties of nanomaterials that increase their toxicity in order to manufacture new nanomaterials with decreased toxicity. Data indicates that size, shape, chemical …

Polyploidy Affects Growth, Fillet Composition, And Fatty Acid Profile In Two Year Old Rainbow Trout, Oncorhynchus Mykiss, Jeremy Lynn Everson Jan 2015

Polyploidy Affects Growth, Fillet Composition, And Fatty Acid Profile In Two Year Old Rainbow Trout, Oncorhynchus Mykiss, Jeremy Lynn Everson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Gonadal development is a dominant physiological process that alters growth and fat metabolism, thereby reducing fillet quality. Sterile, triploid (3N) female rainbow trout, generated by pressure-induced shock of zygotes 30 minutes after fertilization (3NP), are used to eliminate reduced growth and quality associated with gonadogenesis. However, this method does not produce 100% 3N offspring. Crossing a diploid (2N; fertile) female and a tetraploid (4N; fertile) male produces triploid offspring 100% of the time (3NC; sterile). This method is not widely used in the industry because it requires 4N brood stock. The current study examines growth, fatty acid composition, and fillet …

Do Humans Drive Spinal Cord With Limb Velocity Signal?, Kyla Galbreath Jan 2015

Do Humans Drive Spinal Cord With Limb Velocity Signal?, Kyla Galbreath

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The ability to move in the environment is crucial to the survival of all animals. Neural pathways that control locomotion can be described as a hierarchy, with multiple levels of control, and those ultimately converge on spinal pattern generators. Neural pathways controlling locomotion are hierarchical, highly integrated, and well characterized anatomically, but functional explanations are lacking. Previous computational modeling of the CPG has proposed that they essential signal driving these spinal networks are expressed in the modality of desired velocity. To date, no published research has empirically tested velocity as being the control signal of locomotion. The purpose of this …

Dynamic Calibration Of Drifting Sensor Arrays For Real-Time Monitoring, Zongyu Geng Jan 2015

Dynamic Calibration Of Drifting Sensor Arrays For Real-Time Monitoring, Zongyu Geng

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Traditional sensor calibration is restricted to mathematically relating the steady-state sensor responses to the target analyte concentrations to realize environment monitoring. However, commonly-used chemical sensors usually require a relatively long time, on the order of minutes, to reach steady-state operation, and exhibit nonlinear drifting behaviors. To achieve real-time monitoring of rapidly-changing environments while accommodating drifting behaviors, this work develops statistical methods for both forward descriptive calibration and inverse dynamic calibration of sensor arrays.;Forward calibration is performed based on experimental data. In this work, multivariate Gaussian processes (GPs) were adapted to obtain the forward calibration model, which quantifies the sensor response …

Design Of Oxy-Coal Reactors For Calcium Carbide Production Using Cfd, Albio Gutierrez Jan 2015

Design Of Oxy-Coal Reactors For Calcium Carbide Production Using Cfd, Albio Gutierrez

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Oxy-coal combustion with recirculating flue gas is a promising technology in CO2 capture. This technology is intended to reduce emissions of CO2 and other pollutants, such as NOx and SO2. Since the CO2 concentration in flue gas is higher than in conventional air operation, CO2 capture is easier. Other unique applications of oxy-coal combustion are now possible due to the very high temperatures (circa 2000-2500°C) that can be generated with char/ O2 /CO 2 mixtures which in turn can be used to activate chemical reactions which can lead to high valued chemical products. This for example can be an economical …
