Cholesterol Diet-Associated Changes In The Hippocampus - A Prelude To Alzheimer's Disease?, Sylwia W. Brooks
Cholesterol Diet-Associated Changes In The Hippocampus - A Prelude To Alzheimer's Disease?, Sylwia W. Brooks
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
High serum cholesterol levels in midlife have been associated with an increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (AD) later in life. This thesis investigates a possible mechanism linking dietary cholesterol, which cannot pass the blood brain barrier, and AD-like hippocampal neuropathology. The first study tested the hypothesis that a high cholesterol diet increases the flux of the cholesterol metabolite 27-hydroxycholesterol (27-OHC) into the hippocampus. We found that a high-cholesterol diet increased levels of 27-OHC, a biologically active circulatory breakdown product of cholesterol, in hippocampal tissue. 27-OHC has been identified as an endogenous selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) that affects estrogen …

Determination Of Material Properties For Progressive Damage Analysis In Carbon Epoxy Laminates Using Abaqus, Javier Cabrera Barbero
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Well-designed laminated composites do not fail suddenly but rather develop microscopic progressive damage that leads to changes in macroscopic material response, such as matrix cracks, stiffness reduction, and failure. Simulation techniques are able to predict damage initiation and evolution as a function of service conditions. A method for obtaining material properties for damage analysis of Glass and Carbon fiber composites is proposed using a progressive damage analysis (PDA) model implemented in Abaqus.;The predictive capability of Progressive Damage Analysis (PDA) methods relies on material properties that characterize the ability of the composite to resist damage initiation and to delay damage progression. …

How Far Is Too Far? Understanding Identity And Overconformity In Collegiate Wrestlers, Ashley M. Coker-Cranney
How Far Is Too Far? Understanding Identity And Overconformity In Collegiate Wrestlers, Ashley M. Coker-Cranney
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Although athletes who endanger the health and well-being of others are publicly shamed, those who endanger their own health and well-being in an effort to embody the sport ideal are often praised. Athletes are expected to distinguish themselves from their peers, make sacrifices for the good of the game, play through pain and injury, and push physical and mental limits on the path to achieve their goals (Hughes & Coakley, 1991). Collectively, these expectations are known as the "sport ethic" and while they are considered part of sport culture, athletes who overconform to them may engage in behaviors that risk …

A Study Of The Ndt Techniques Using Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Test And Microwave Oven Method On Scc And Tvc, Dana Dashti
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In this study, two nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques were investigated to study the ultrasonic pulse velocity and water cement ratio of self-consolidating concrete (SCC) and traditional vibrated concrete (TVC). The ultrasonic pulse velocity test is one of the most useful nondestructive methods to determine the properties of concrete. It is also important in structural engineering where it can detect defects and determine deterioration. In order to reach these purposes, there are several ultrasonic wave propagation characteristics that should be taken under consideration such as: velocity, attenuation, frequency, and energy. For the purpose of this study, 3 specimens from each mix …

Quantification Of Stabilization Efforts Of Shoulder Muscles Using Surface Electromyography, Hamad Nasser Alasim
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Shoulder musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) put a huge burden on both employers and employees due to lost work days, healthcare costs and human suffering. Static and heavy industrial work, submaximal repetitive movement and arm elevation are frequently associated with shoulder MSDs. Previous studies indicated that factors such as force exertion levels, posture and hand gripping can influence the activation and fatigability of shoulder muscles. In this study, we explored the inter-muscle difference in shoulder activation during isometric/static force exertions. We suspected that shoulder muscles' attempt to stabilize the glenohumeral joint using the concavity compression mechanism may explain differences in the muscle …
