Three Essays On State And Federal Regulations, Shree Baba Pokharel
Three Essays On State And Federal Regulations, Shree Baba Pokharel
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation consists of three essays on state and federal regulations in the US. Each paragraph below refers to the three abstracts for the three chapters in this dissertation, respectively.;Given the growing importance of the wine industry in the US, wine special interests are on the rise. Data shows that campaign contributions from the wine industry to officials running for state offices have increased over time. Given this reality, one can expect wine excise tax to remain low in states that receive higher campaign contributions. In addition, there are theoretical and empirical reasons to believe that these tax rates are …
Long-Term Evaluation Of Permanent Seeding And Mulching Practices, Marissa A. Poultney
Long-Term Evaluation Of Permanent Seeding And Mulching Practices, Marissa A. Poultney
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Vegetation cover is required on disturbed land resulting from construction activities. The West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH) specifications for seeding and mulching currently includes seed mixtures that contain species that are considered highly invasive by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR). This work evaluated the use of experimental seed mixtures at roadside locations by considering two major objectives: i) evaluating long-term performance of experimental mixtures over multiple growing seasons, and ii) investigating sediment yield from vegetation cover practice.;First, vegetation growth and persistence from four small-scale field plots were monitored through the second and third growing seasons. The …
Development Of An Ammonia Reduction After-Treatment Systems For Stoichiometric Natural Gas Engines, Saroj Pradhan
Development Of An Ammonia Reduction After-Treatment Systems For Stoichiometric Natural Gas Engines, Saroj Pradhan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Three-way catalyst (TWC) equipped stoichiometric natural gas vehicles have proven to be an effective alternative fuel strategy that shows significant low NOx emissions characteristics. However, recent studies have shown the TWC activity to contribute to elevated levels of tailpipe ammonia (NH 3) emissions. Although a non-regulated pollutant, ammonia is a potent pre-cursor to ambient secondary PM formation. Ammonia is an inevitable byproduct of fuel rich operation that results in lowest NOx slip through the TWC after-treatment system.;The main objective of the study is to develop a passive Ammonia Reduction Catalyst (passive-ARC) based NH3 reduction strategy that results in an overall …
Exploring Concentration And Duration Dependence In Hormesis, Maren S. Prediger
Exploring Concentration And Duration Dependence In Hormesis, Maren S. Prediger
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The phenomenon of hormesis, characterized by beneficial low-exposure stress-protective effects, has experienced increasing interest by the scientific community. Elucidating the underlying cellular signaling pathways that lead to a new homeostatic state can provide crucial information about new therapeutic targets to prevent and treat diseases. Commonly investigated for hormetic behavior are plant-based substances (phytochemicals), such as quercetin, epigallocatechin gallate, curcumin, and resveratrol. The polyphenol resveratrol, found in peanuts, grapes, and subsequently in wine, is known for a variety of effects---beneficial and detrimental---depending on the investigated cell type and concentration. In HepG2 cells, an increase in proliferation has been observed previously at …
Physical Properties And Drying Behavior Of Hydrothermally Treated Yellow-Poplar, Sohrab Rahimi
Physical Properties And Drying Behavior Of Hydrothermally Treated Yellow-Poplar, Sohrab Rahimi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Non-chemical treatments (steam and ultrasonic vibrations) have been intensively researched and commercialized to make chemical-free wood products with enhanced mechanical properties and decay resistance; however, utilization of high-pressure steam medium involves vapor-phase reactions using high-temperature steam generated at the expense of high energy input. In this research, drying behavior, mechanical properties, and physical characteristics of wood (yellow-poplar) were compared to evaluate influence of reaction media (steam and hot-compressed water) and temperatures (100°C and 140°C). The control (no treatment) was used for reference comparison. For experiments, green samples of yellow-poplar heartwood were used for treatment. The average size of length (longitudinal …
Developing And Implementing New Algorithms Into The Lamodel Program For Numerical Analysis Of Multiple Seam Interactions, Mehdi Rajaeebaygi
Developing And Implementing New Algorithms Into The Lamodel Program For Numerical Analysis Of Multiple Seam Interactions, Mehdi Rajaeebaygi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Analysis of incidents in underground mining reveals that ground falls, including roof and rib falls, is one of the major sources of injuries and fatalities, however the number of accidents has reduced significantly during recent years (MSHA 2015). For instance, in 2005, around 60% of total fatalities in underground mining were associated with ground falls. This percentage has dropped to 37% in 2015 (MSHA 2015). This significant reduction in underground incidents may be caused by several reasons such as: using advanced technology, advance in computer science, new policies on safety, etc. Development of mathematical methods such as finite element and …
Radio Transients And Their Environments, Kaustubh Rajwade
Radio Transients And Their Environments, Kaustubh Rajwade
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The interstellar medium is the principal ingredient for star formation and hence, it is necessary to study the properties of the interstellar medium. Radio sources in our Galaxy and beyond can be used as a probe of the intervening medium. In this dissertation, I present an attempt to use radio transients like pulsars and fast radio bursts and their interactions with the environment around them to study interstellar medium. We show that radio emission from pulsars is absorbed by dense ionized gas in their surroundings, causing a turnover in their flux density spectrum that can be used to reveal information …
Child And Parent Contributions To Maternal Emotion Socialization And Children's Emotion Outcomes In Late Childhood, Katie E. Rasmussen
Child And Parent Contributions To Maternal Emotion Socialization And Children's Emotion Outcomes In Late Childhood, Katie E. Rasmussen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Parents have an enduring influence on the development of children. The parent-child relationship is dynamic, and both children and their parents contribute to it. The purpose of this investigation was to examine parent-child emotion socialization processes. These processes represent one of the most influential settings where children's emotional trajectories are developed and shaped. Both children and parents shape parental responses to children's negative emotions. In this investigation, both child and parental antecedents were examined simultaneously, including children's negative emotionality, soothability, attention focusing, and inhibitory control, and parental attribution of children's dysregulated specific negative emotions. The final sample included one hundred …
The Use Of Concentration Of Anti-Mullerian Hormone (Amh) As An Indicator Of Reproductive Performance In Livestock Species, Adam Karl Russell Redhead
The Use Of Concentration Of Anti-Mullerian Hormone (Amh) As An Indicator Of Reproductive Performance In Livestock Species, Adam Karl Russell Redhead
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Reproductive success is essential for high levels of animal productivity. Low fertility has been identified as one of the main constraints hindering the productivity of livestock systems. To address this problem, several tools such as genomic selection and assisted reproductive techniques (ART) have been implemented. Two of the more common ART used to improve reproductive performance are artificial insemination (AI) and embryo transfer (ET). The success of these methods is highly dependent on individual animal characteristics; therefore the ability to select animals that provide high levels of reproductive success is essential. The size of the ovarian antral follicular population (AFP) …

Development Of Techniques For Assessment Of Population Characteristics Of The Federally Endangered Diamond Darter, Austin A. Rizzo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Population monitoring is an essential component of endangered species recovery programs. One species for which monitoring is needed is the federally endangered Diamond Darter Crystallaria cincotta. This species was placed on the Endangered Species List in 2013 because of its small range and population size, and because of continued anthropogenic threats to the species' habitat. The Diamond Darter is believed to occur only within the lower 50 rkm of the Elk River in West Virginia. Museum specimens indicate the Diamond Darter was once distributed throughout the Ohio River Basin, but it is now likely extirpated from the Muskingum River, the …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Eye development is a dynamic and complex process that is controlled by the interactions of transcription factors, signaling pathways, and growth factors. Disruption of the developmental process can result in ocular malformations or retinal diseases, which can cause blindness. Developing tools to study embryonic retinogenesis and understanding the molecular mechanisms involved are important for increasing our understanding of neural development, understanding ocular malformations such as anophthalmia, and may improve or lead to new treatments for eye diseases including blindness. This work aims to develop new tools for studying early eye development and explore genes associated with optic vesicle development and …
Growing Community Gardens In The Mountain State, Mary Ryan
Growing Community Gardens In The Mountain State, Mary Ryan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Community gardening is being used to address food inequality as an alternative food network. Most literature looks at community gardening in urban contexts. Less is known about community gardening in rural areas. My research was able to address how community gardening contributes to food sovereignty in WV and how garden leaders help contribute to this access to food sovereignty. Through a survey of 19 community gardens across West Virginia I show the organization and use of these gardens. Through interviews with 11 of those gardens, I was able to learn about how garden leaders' frame their gardens' goals and importance …
Far-Field Ground Strain Failure Mode Assessment For Mineral Extraction Near Dams, Harold Russell
Far-Field Ground Strain Failure Mode Assessment For Mineral Extraction Near Dams, Harold Russell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Steeply sloped, high relief landforms with fractured sedimentary geology in proximity to underground mine voids have the potential to produce far-field ground strains which initiate strain failure modes for cross valley dams. The Ryerson Station Dam breach in 2005 brought attention to the possibility of increased hazard to dams due to far-field ground strain phenomena from underground mining.;The mapping study found that three United States Army Corps of Engineers (U.S.ACE) owned and operated dams were within the 1-mile buffer radius, and four within the 2.7-mile buffer radius of mine permits in West Virginia. Some U.S.ACE dams can be very large …
The Potential Impact Of Art Therapy Approaches In An Alternative Learning School Setting In Urban West Virginia, Brianna Saddler
The Potential Impact Of Art Therapy Approaches In An Alternative Learning School Setting In Urban West Virginia, Brianna Saddler
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Now more than ever American adolescents are suffering from severe anxiety (Lewis, 2017). In the past, over-achieving students were those parents least worried about when it came to experiencing anxiety but now studies show these students are just as likely to experience anxiety as those learners considered to be underachievers. The purpose of this paper is to inform the reader how art therapy approaches embedded into daily lesson plans could be used in alternative learning school settings to help students deal with anxiety. Through my own experiences as a practicing art teacher in both general education art classrooms and alternative …
A Conductor's Perspective On Stravinsky's "Danse Sacrale" From "Le Sacre Du Printemps": Evaluation Of Revisions, Analysis And Considerations For Conducting, Hanjin Sa
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The final dance, Danse sacrale from the ballet Le Sacre du printemps by Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) presents various challenges for conductors: both textual and technical. For the textual challenges, this research paper focuses on the comparative studies of various revisions, the early sketchbook, and the autograph full score. The study of correspondence between Stravinsky and the early conductors of Le Sacre (Pierre Monteux and Ernest Ansermet) also offers important clues for solving the puzzle with which Stravinsky himself had struggled for decades.;Both the 1943-revised version and Nicholas Slonimsky's re-barring of the Danse sacrale will be closely examined. Despite Stravinsky's wish …

This thesis is a study of Sir Frederick Jackson, an early British explorer and administrator between 1880 and 1917 focusing on three main facets of his career those being his early days as an explorer, his administration in Kenya, and then his governorship of Uganda. Within these three main focal points, various important historical topics such as the Uganda Railway, the Maasai Move, and the planter and peasant dilemma in Uganda are discussed in relation to Jackson's position at that moment of his career in order to shed some light on Jackson and the early colonial period in Africa.
Representation And Policy Making: Women Participating In The U.S. House, Lauren M. Santoro
Representation And Policy Making: Women Participating In The U.S. House, Lauren M. Santoro
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Past research has established the link between descriptive and substantive representation (Swers 2002a) and has overwhelmingly focused on agenda setting behaviors and roll call voting (e.g., Swain 1993; Thomas 1994; Swers 2013). The first part of this dissertation focuses instead on deliberations within committee hearings, quite proximate to the law-making process, where legislators exhibit representational behavior. Do women participate in committee proceedings more so than men when they consciously seek to represent so-called "women's interests"? This chapter aims to explore this question by gathering data on House hearings considering the Family and Medical Leave Act and a bill considering the …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Recently, lithium ion batteries (LIBs) have been widely used in the field of portable electronic devices and electric vehicles due to high adaptability, high working voltage and low toxicity. However, traditional electrode materials have greatly limited the future of LIBs because of their low theoretical specific capacities; meanwhile, new electrode materials always need to be prepared by complicated and expensive methods, indicating the small probability of large-scale promotion. In this study, the Si/CNFs composite film anode without any binder by a simple and effective method - electrophoretic deposition (EPD) - is developed, which exhibits improved electrochemical properties.;This thesis is firstly …
An Insulating Constriction Dielectrophoresis Based Microfluidic Device For Protein Biomolecules Concentration, Peng Zhang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Sample enrichment or molecules concentration has been considered as an essential step for sample processing and biomarker detection recently in many applications involving miniaturized devices aiming at biosensing and bioanalysis, including the development of specialized tests for the detection of specific proteins and antibodies in human blood with the help of microfluidic and lab-on-a-chip devices. Among all the means involved to achieve this aim, dielectrophoresis (DEP) is increasingly employed in molecule manipulation and concentration because it is non-destructive and ensures high efficiency. However, there are still constraints on implementing the required functions using the dielectrophoresis technique in the devised micro-scale …
Characterizing The Mechanisms Of Insulin Resistance In Dairy Cattle, Amanda Nicole Davis
Characterizing The Mechanisms Of Insulin Resistance In Dairy Cattle, Amanda Nicole Davis
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Dairy cows transitioning from gestation to lactation experience insulin resistance as maternal adaptation to partition nutrients toward the mammary gland to support milk production. Insulin resistance causes increased lipolysis and free fatty acid (FFA) release into circulation. Unfortunately, this metabolic adaptation occurs during a time when energy demands are heightened and cows are already experiencing negative energy balance. As a result, accelerated hepatic FFA influx promotes hepatic triacylglycerol (TAG) accumulation and ketogenesis, which can cause postpartum metabolic disease. In diabetic monogastrics, mechanisms that mediate insulin resistance involve the sphingolipid ceramide. The role of ceramide in insulin signaling in dairy cows …

Resonant Excitation Spectroscopy And Photon Statistics Of Self-Assembled Semiconductor Quantum Dots, Disheng Chen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Light-matter interactions in semiconductor nanostructures have attracted significant research interest because of both fundamental physics questions and practical concerns. Epitaxially grown quantum dots (QDs), with their narrow emission linewidths and atom-like density of states in a solid state system, are archetypical elements of study and are potentially useful for many applications, such as on-demand single photon emitters [1,2], efficient entangled photon-pair sources [3,4], and cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) research [5–11]. Most experiments employ resonant or near-resonant excitation to directly interact with the bound states, which enables high excitation efficiency, precise control of quantum states, and minimal disturbance of the local …
Student Interview And Preference Assessment As Functional Behavior Assessment Tools In Schools, Gabrielle Mesches
Student Interview And Preference Assessment As Functional Behavior Assessment Tools In Schools, Gabrielle Mesches
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Functional behavior assessments (FBA) identify the consequences that maintain challenging behavior. Much of the current literature suggests that functional analyses are the most effective component of an FBA. However, functional analyses are most commonly used with children with developmental and intellectual disabilities. For children with complex verbal repertoires, other types of assessment may identify consequences maintaining behavior that can be subsequently manipulated as part of a classroom-based intervention. In the current study, we compared a student-completed interview and preference assessment to the outcomes of a functional analysis, and used the outcomes of all three assessments to evaluate classroom-based interventions to …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Movement is a complex task, requiring precise and coordinated muscle contractions. The forces and torques produced during multi-segmental movement of the upper limbs in humans, must be controlled, in order for movement to be achieved successfully. Although a critical aspect of everyday life, there remain questions regarding the specific controller used by the central nervous system to govern movement. Furthermore, how this system is affected by neurological injuries such as stroke also remains in question. It was the goal of this thesis to examine the neurological control of movement in healthy individuals and apply these findings to the further investigation …
An Evaluation Of The Effects Of Treatment Integrity Errors On Skill Acquisition During Discrete-Trial Instruction, Jennifer M. Owsiany
An Evaluation Of The Effects Of Treatment Integrity Errors On Skill Acquisition During Discrete-Trial Instruction, Jennifer M. Owsiany
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Previous research has demonstrated that delivering controlling prompts and reinforcers with low-levels of treatment integrity may interfere with the acquisition of skills during discrete-trial instruction. However, implementing certain components of discrete-trial instruction with varying levels of low integrity may influence skill acquisition differently. In Experiment 1, we evaluated the effects of delivering a prompt following participants' incorrect responses with 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% integrity on skill acquisition with two children with autism spectrum disorder. In Experiment 2, we evaluated the effects of delivering a reinforcer following participants' correct responses with 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% integrity on skill acquisition …

Heavy-duty diesel engines are subjected to in-use emissions testing using portable emissions measurement systems (PEMS) to demonstrate compliance with U.S. EPA emissions standards while the vehicle is performing its regular on-road duty-cycle. The current methodology used for analyzing in-use emissions in the United States is the Not-To-Exceed (NTE) method and in Europe the Work-Based-Window (WBW) method. The primary objective of this study is to identify the sensitivity of the control factors governing both in-use emissions quantification methods, and range of optimum boundary parameter settings to maximize the amount of data available for evaluation while reporting representative NOx emissions. A total …
Fear Of Pain And Dental Care-Related Fear: Associations With The Mc1r Gene, Cameron L. Randall
Fear Of Pain And Dental Care-Related Fear: Associations With The Mc1r Gene, Cameron L. Randall
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Fear of pain is experienced in acute and chronic pain populations, as well as generally, and impacts numerous aspects of the pain experience, including pain intensity, pain-related disability, and pain behavior (e.g., avoidance). A related but separate construct, dental care-related fear, also is experienced in the general population, and impacts dental treatment-seeking behavior and oral and systemic health. Very minimal work has addressed the role of genetics in the etiologies of fear of pain and dental care-related fear. Limited available data suggest that variants of the melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R) gene may predict greater levels of dental care-related fear. The MC1R …
