Development Of Innovative Wastewater Treatment Technologies For Acid Mine Drainage And Municipal Wastewater Management In Energy Producing Regions, Dongyang Deng Jan 2017

Development Of Innovative Wastewater Treatment Technologies For Acid Mine Drainage And Municipal Wastewater Management In Energy Producing Regions, Dongyang Deng

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Acid mine drainage (AMD) and municipal wastewater (MWW) are two major pollution sources in headwaters of Appalachia and energy producing regions worldwide. Incorporating the prevalent chemistry of the two wastes in designing treatment technologies for concurrent management of the wastes can provide multi-faceted benefits. First, alkalinity in MWW can raise the pH of AMD upon mixing, and promote chemical precipitation of metal hydroxides and carbonates. Second, low solubility of phosphate with multivalent metals (e.g., Fe and Al) can be an effective mechanism for recovering phosphate from MWW. Third, sulfate ions from AMD can serve as an electron acceptor for oxidation …

The Effect Of A Missing At Random Missing Data Mechanism On A Single Layer Artificial Neural Network With A Sigmoidal Activation Function And The Use Of Multiple Imputation As A Correction, Taron Dick

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Missing data is a common problem encountered in statistical analysis. However, little is known about how bias inducing missing at random missing data mechanisms affect predictive model performance measures such as sensitivity, specificity, error rate, ROC curves, and AUC. I investigate the effect of missing at random missing data mechanisms on a single layer artificial neural network with a sigmoidal activation function, equivalent to a binary logistic regression. Binary logistic regression is frequently used in health research and so it is a logical starting point to understand the effects of missing data on statistical learning models that could be used …

Comparison Of Methods Of Measuring Electronic Cigarette Puff Topography, Nicholas Felicione

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

To evaluate properly the potential benefits and harms of electronic cigarettes (ECIGs), it is important to evaluate how individuals puff from an electronic cigarette, or their puff topography. This measure, which includes indices of puff number, duration, volume, interpuff interval, and flow rate, can be used to predict exposure to toxicants including nicotine. Puff topography has been studied extensively for cigarette smokers, but not ECIG users. The studies that have involved electronic cigarette topography measurement have done so using devices that have not been thoroughly validated or proven reliable. Thus, the purpose of this study was to evaluate methods of …

Optimization Of Mineral Processing Circuit Design Under Uncertainty, Seyed Hassan Amini Jan 2017

Optimization Of Mineral Processing Circuit Design Under Uncertainty, Seyed Hassan Amini

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The estimation and analysis of uncertainty propagation in mineral processing separation circuits is an essential and significant, but challenging, aspect of a comprehensive optimal circuit design procedure. Owing to the sophisticated modeling requirements, many of the current circuit optimization tools rely on deterministic models, despite the ubiquity of uncertainty in the techno-economic input parameters (e.g. mineral price, plant feed grade, and process kinetic coefficients). While individual sources of uncertainty are substantial, the circuit designer must also estimate the compounded uncertainty imputed by the actual circuit design and identify which units are most influential in this uncertainty propagation. Additionally, despite the …

Three Essays On International Mobility And Economic Development, Imran Arif Jan 2017

Three Essays On International Mobility And Economic Development, Imran Arif

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation contains research on three topics in economic development. The main argument of this dissertation is that when societies interact, they learn new ideas, superior technologies, and new production processes from each other. Any barriers to this interaction can hurt the diffusion of ideas across nations. Chapter 1 tests the relationship between international travel and institutions. This paper features a neglected channel of institution convergence among countries, i.e., international travel. International travel clearly increases human interaction over space and exposes societies to foreign influences, foreign ideas, and foreign institutions. Does international travel promote institutional change in a traveler's home …

Elucidating Function In Early Diverging Non-Flagellated Fungi Using Metabolomics And Proteomics, Gregory R. Boyce Jan 2017

Elucidating Function In Early Diverging Non-Flagellated Fungi Using Metabolomics And Proteomics, Gregory R. Boyce

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The obligate lifestyle of many of the early diverging non-flagellated fungi have long precluded them from functional studies reserved primarily for their easily cultured, more derived counterparts. Modern --omics--based tools including transciptomics, proteomics and metabolomics have facilitated a better understanding of many fungi but have yet to be employed in the study of early diverging non-flagellated fungi with few exceptions. Using global and targeted metabolomics and prototeomics across the symbiotic spectrum, a series of studies were undertaken to better understand metabolism of three symbiotic interactions: two AM fungus-plant associations including Rhizophagus dimorphicus -- grass, R. clarus -- legume, and one …

Corticospinal Excitability During Locomotion In Humans, Lisa Kogan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The coordination between signals from cortical structures and spinal segmental pathways responsible for the control of locomotion remains a contentious issue in human motor control. The signals are known to be integrated, but the nature of these neural calculations is unknown. To understand these interactions in humans, noninvasive cortical stimulation techniques can be combined with detailed analyses of muscle activity patterns in locomotor tasks.;In this study, I tested the relationship between corticospinal inputs and the forward velocity of each limb. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was used to elicit motor evoked potentials (MEPs) in 12 healthy human volunteers during locomotion on …

Comprehensive Analyses Of Mirna And Dna Methylation In 17beta-Estradiol Exposed Juvenile Rainbow Trout Skeletal Muscle, Prasanthi P. Koganti

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Reproductive development in female teleosts like rainbow trout starts with release of the sex steroid estrogen, necessary for synthesis of the egg yolk protein vitellogenin. Increase in estrogen secretion during these reproductive phases results in increased energy demands. Skeletal muscle serves as an immediate endogenous source to address energy demands during vitellogenesis and spawning due to which it undergoes rapid degradation resulting in water accumulation, poor fillet and low egg quality. An imbalance in protein turnover is observed not only because of rapid increase in degradative pathways but also due to decreased protein synthesis. These changes in protein metabolism in …

Beyond The Classroom: The Need For Support For Parents With A Child Diagnosed With Autism, Id, And Behavioral Problems, Erica Curington

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Families with individuals with special needs face many different struggles such as identifying needs and/or appropriate supports, accessing those supports, and then locating providers to help implement those supports (Boehm & Carter, 2016). These individuals may need continuous support to live meaningful and productive lives outside of the classroom. As students leave the classroom, the need for addressing these struggles becomes of greater value and difficulty for families. This is especially true in more rural areas due to lack of services. The following research questions were utilized during this study: What services have been used outside of the classroom to …

Depression, Treatment Response To Tnfi, And Economic Outcomes Among Working-Age Adults With Rheumatoid Arthritis, Arijita Deb Jan 2017

Depression, Treatment Response To Tnfi, And Economic Outcomes Among Working-Age Adults With Rheumatoid Arthritis, Arijita Deb

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Depression is one of the most frequently occurring conditions in Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) patients and understanding depression as a comorbidity in RA is very important. The link between RA and depression is very complex and influenced by a multitude of factors such as shared pathophysiologic pathways of inflammation, RA-related treatment response, as well as the patient's demographic and socio-economic factors, and general difficulties in coping with the disease. Depression can increase the clinical, humanistic, and economic burden among RA patients. Growing evidence now suggests that depression is a systemic inflammatory condition and may exert a negative influence on the treatment …

Effects Of A Manikin On The Capture Efficiency And Protection Efficiency Of A Small Rectangular Hood, Brian Scott Geissler Jan 2017

Effects Of A Manikin On The Capture Efficiency And Protection Efficiency Of A Small Rectangular Hood, Brian Scott Geissler

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The primary indicator of capturing hood effectiveness is widely assumed to be the "capture velocity" measured normal to the center of the hood face, at the furthest location of the contaminant source. The velocity required at this distance (Vx) is thought to correspond to the appropriate flow (Q) required to capture the contaminant. The adequacy of Vx as a surrogate for hood effectiveness has long been poorly understood and has been little studied. Few considerations of potentially disruptive parameters, such as draft velocity, hood orientation, and operator presence are made during the design phase.;In this study, an anatomically correct heated, …

A Study Of Pressure Variation In Wellbores During Gas Kicks, Seyhmus Guner Jan 2017

A Study Of Pressure Variation In Wellbores During Gas Kicks, Seyhmus Guner

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

It is critical to understand the dynamic behavior and consequences of undesired reservoir influxes that triggers well control emergencies. In contrast to liquid kick, gas influx migration in water based mud and solubility in oil based mud represents exceptionally hazardous conditions. Operation delay time would result in a pressure build-up at the surface with increasing risk of fracturing the casing shoe.;In this study, critical factors affecting gas bubble rise velocity in a closed wellbore are studied. These factors are influx size, annulus clearance, reservoir pressure, oil/water ratio, drilling fluid density, reservoir temperature, plastic viscosity and yield point. Three different well …

Leakage Evaluation Of Three Endodontic Sealers Used In A Single-Cone Technique: A Study Using Bioluminescent Bacteria, Sean M. Horan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Introduction.;After proper chemomechanical disinfection and obturation of a root canal system, the next important goal in endodontic therapy is obtaining an adequate coronal seal. If the coronal seal becomes compromised, it is difficult to decide whether the root canal system should be re-treated. This decision should be made based on the ability of the root canal filling to resist bacterial contamination and on the length of time the seal has been compromised.;The root canal system should be filled in three dimensions, typically with a combination of gutta percha and sealer. One obturation method that has seen a revival in recent …

Effects Of Chronic Electronic Cigarette Use On Glucose Metabolism, Hannah Hoskinson Jan 2017

Effects Of Chronic Electronic Cigarette Use On Glucose Metabolism, Hannah Hoskinson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Traditional cigarette usage has been linked to a number of nefarious metabolic effects, including insulin resistance; however, the effects of electronic cigarettes (E-cigs) are not currently known. Advertised as a safe alternative for traditional tobacco cigarettes, E-cigs still contain some of the same harmful chemicals as tobacco cigarettes. Through this study, we hope to gain perspective on whether e-cigs play into the development of altered glucose homeostasis. C57BL/6 mice were divided between E-cig (n=15) and control (n=15) groups and exposed to either cappuccino flavored E-cig vapor or filtered air for 4 h/d, 5 d/wk for 8 months. Fasting blood glucose …

The Role Of Somatostatin In The Regulation Of Gonadotropin Secretion In Sheep, Richard B. Mccosh Jan 2017

The Role Of Somatostatin In The Regulation Of Gonadotropin Secretion In Sheep, Richard B. Mccosh

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Two modes of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion are necessary for female fertility: surge and episodic secretion. However, the neural systems that regulate these GnRH secretion patterns are still under investigation. The neuropeptide somatostatin (SST) inhibits episodic luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion in humans and sheep, and several lines of evidence suggest SST may regulate secretion during the LH surge. Neither a SST receptor 2 (SSTR2) agonist (octreotide) or antagonist (CYN154806; CYN) altered the amplitude or timing of the LH surge. Administration of CYN to intact ewes during either the breeding season or anestrus increased LH secretion and …

Two Essays On Macro-Financial Linkages, Jennifer Moreale Jan 2017

Two Essays On Macro-Financial Linkages, Jennifer Moreale

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In the following essays I examine the effects of two unique macro-financial conditions---tight credit and unconventional monetary policy---in an investment and a price discovery setting. I address two major questions from the macro-finance literature: (1) what are the states of nature in which excess returns are mostly affected? And, (2) does unconventional monetary policy influence the term structure of interest rates?;Results from my first essay show a differential effect of the credit cycle on firms in the cross-section. Firm's excess returns are particularly affected in periods of tight credit conditions and the effect of the credit cycle is heterogeneous across …

Dissertation: Building And Recovering Trust In The Buyer-Seller Relationship, Christopher A. Nelson Jan 2017

Dissertation: Building And Recovering Trust In The Buyer-Seller Relationship, Christopher A. Nelson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This three-essay dissertation examines how trust is developed and recovered in the buyer-seller relationship. Specifically, the first essay examines how initial facial trustworthiness evaluations subconsciously affect trust perceptions based on an approach-avoidance decision. Findings from fMRI meta-analysis of nine studies supported this theory and uncovered the network of brain regions involved in this process. In the second essay, a grounded theory approach was used to examine trust recovery in the buyer-seller relationship. The results of this analysis indicated a three-step trust repair process is an optimized approach for achieving trust recovery. Contrary to the dominant view in the literature, this …
