Creating The Need To Serve: How West Virginia Spontaneous Disaster Relief Volunteers' Motivations And Experiences Influence Their Willingness For Continued Volunteerism*, Erin Hudnall

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Spontaneous volunteerism, or emergent volunteer behavior, is characterized by an individual's actions of impulsively offering volunteer services immediately following the occurrence of a natural disaster or community tragedy, such as a flood or terrorist attack. This type of volunteerism differs from traditional volunteer activities that are usually preplanned and not related to a recent tragedy. It is unclear what types of motivations spur individuals to volunteer after a disaster, whether spontaneous volunteers' experiences lead to willingness for continued volunteerism in the future, and whether motivations and experiences differ significantly by context. To study this phenomenon, spontaneous volunteers who offered help …

Impact Of Inquiry-Based, Question-And-Answer Instruction In High-Enrollment Classes, Matthew R. Schraeder

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Lecturing is a common way to teach large classes, especially in mathematics. Other styles of instruction have been proven to be more effective in small classroom settings, but those styles are not always practical (or even feasible) in classes with 200+ students. The lecturing dialogue primarily exists at the intersection of Spectrum Theory and the Socratic Method, utilizing inquiry-based learning within the realm of active learning, experiential learning, and constructivism to appeal to learners with various learning styles, which helps students to discover new information (specifically, why things occur in the way that they do) and make connections between old …

Reimagining The Ssmint Software Package, Kelly Cecil Jan 2017

Reimagining The Ssmint Software Package, Kelly Cecil

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

We examine two proposed indexing algorithms taking advantage of the new SSMinT libraries. The two algorithms primarily differ in their selection of documents for learning. The batch indexing method selects some random number of documents for learning. The iterative indexing method uses a single randomly selected document to discover semantic signatures, which are then used to find additional related documents. The batch indexing method discovers one to three semantic signatures per document, resulting in poor clustering performance as evaluated by human cross-validation of clusters using the Adjusted Rand Index. The iterative indexing method discovers more semantic signatures per document, resulting …

Nonword Repetition Task To Evaluate Syllable Stress As A Motor Class, Emily R. Cobun Jan 2017

Nonword Repetition Task To Evaluate Syllable Stress As A Motor Class, Emily R. Cobun

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Current speech therapy methods and theories are based on generalized motor program (GMP) theory (Schmidt, 1975). GMP theory states a single GMP, or motor program, directs multiple movements of speech (Maas et al., 2008). Additionally, GMP theory asserts these similar muscle movements are part of the same motor class, which allows a GMP to direct performance on novel, untrained patterns of movements (i.e., what is termed "transfer performance"; Chamberlin & Magill, 1992; Schmidt, 1975). Alternatively, movements outside of a learned motor class will be more difficult to perform because a different GMP is controlling these movements. Currently, syllable stress patterns …

"Home Sweet Away-From-Home?" Morgantown, West Virginia's Sunnyside Neighborhood As A Cultural Landscape, Pamela Yvonne Curtin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Sunnyside is a 130-acre neighborhood bordering West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia. Since the 1890s, it has been home to a variety of transient residents, including industrial workers, families, and individuals associated with the University. Beginning in the 1960s, Sunnyside transitioned into Morgantown's primary student neighborhood. Students took up residence in old two- and three-story frame houses broken into smaller units; often, these houses lacked necessary upkeep, failed code standards, and indicated the neighborhood's broader deteriorating conditions. Furthermore, student parties in Sunnyside grew increasingly intense and reflected negatively on West Virginia University, labeled in the 1970s as a "party …
