Shale Characterization And Size-Effect Study Using Scanning Electron Microscopy And X-Ray Diffraction, Debashis Das
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Ground failure is a major contributor of the total fatalities in underground mines in the US. Underground coal mines in the Northern Appalachian region have weak roof rock mainly composed of shale and sandstone. Characterization of shale is indispensable for developing an effective ground control plan. However, this has not been done extensively. This thesis attempts to address this issue. It investigates the variation in mechanical properties of shale with variation in size. In addition, an attempt has been made to relate the strength of shale with its petrographic parameters. X-ray diffraction technique was used to estimate the compositional parameters …

The purpose of this dissertation was to determine the associations between school climate, academic grades, substance initiation, and types of school absences in a group of middle school students who transition into high school. METHODS: Longitudinal and cross-sectional analyses were used to examine study variables from middle and high school students across 26 regional schools located in West Virginia. RESULTS: Students with positive perceptions of …
Three Essays On Public Information And Security Prices., Chen Gu
Three Essays On Public Information And Security Prices., Chen Gu
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation includes three essays examining the role of public information in financial markets. The first essay examines informed trading before natural gas inventory announcements. Natural gas futures prices start moving in the “right” direction about 90 minutes before the announcement. The empirical results show that the difference between the median forecast of analysts with high historical forecasting accuracy and the consensus forecast can be used to predict inventory surprises and some of the pre-announcement drift. Because both individual analyst forecasts and consensus are available to Bloomberg subscribers prior to official release time, our results suggest that informed trading before …
Proteasomal Atpases Hard At Work: The Inner Workings Of A Protein Destruction Machine., Aaron M. Snoberger
Proteasomal Atpases Hard At Work: The Inner Workings Of A Protein Destruction Machine., Aaron M. Snoberger
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Across all domains of life, the proteasome is responsible for the majority of targeted protein degradation in the cell. Often, the proteasome is thought of as the molecular “garbageman” of the cell. While it is true that the proteasome degrades and eliminates misfolded proteins, the proteasome is also capable of degrading fully folded, functional proteins whose presence is no longer required (e.g. during embryonic development, cell cycle changes, etc.). Despite its crucial role in virtually every cellular process, our understanding of how the proteasome operates from a mechanistic perspective is still highly limited. In order to prevent unregulated degradation the …
Effects Of Serial- Or Single-Alternative Training On Resurgence., Claudia C. Diaz-Salvat
Effects Of Serial- Or Single-Alternative Training On Resurgence., Claudia C. Diaz-Salvat
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Serial-response training involves the consecutive training of several alternative responses whereas single-response training involves the training of a single alternative response. Serialresponse training may mitigate resurgence of a target response when compared to teaching a single alternative response. However, previous evaluations did not control for the number of available response options across conditions. This study compared serial- and single-response training on resurgence of a target behavior when the number of response options was held constant. Serial-response training involved reinforcing each of four alternative responses sequentially. Single-response training involved reinforcing a single alternative response. Resurgence was tested by withholding all reinforcers …
Molecular Evolution Of Sedimentary Organic Matter In Marcellus Shale., Vikas Agrawal
Molecular Evolution Of Sedimentary Organic Matter In Marcellus Shale., Vikas Agrawal
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Several biological and physico-chemical processes lead to the transformation of organic matter (OM) from simple organic compounds to a complex macromolecule and a mixture of hydrocarbons during the geological evolution of sedimentary rocks. These changes are controlled by biological activity in the early stages of burial, and by temperature and pressure in the later stages. The increasing temperature and pressure conditions with burial is termed as maturation, in which biomolecules are converted into petroleum. Three consecutive stages of maturation namely: diagenesis, catagenesis and metagenesis produce irreversible changes in the composition of sedimentary OM. The bulk characteristics (such as elemental composition) …
Can Parents' Value Of Children's Happiness Predict Their Emotion Socialization And Parenting?, Tyia Wilson
Can Parents' Value Of Children's Happiness Predict Their Emotion Socialization And Parenting?, Tyia Wilson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Happiness is considered a priority for most people and understandably so due to its benefits. Happiness not only makes people feel good but leads to better health outcomes. However, emerging research found that valuing happiness at extreme levels can be detrimental to a person’s well-being (Mauss, Tamir, Anderson, & Savino, 2011). Yet, no research has directly examined if the concept of excessively valuing happiness can be applied to another person’s happiness and in particular, one’s children. Additionally, no research has examined how parents’ beliefs about their children’s happiness is linked to parenting behaviors and emotion socialization. Two present studies investigate …
Antibacterial Activity Of Current Endodontic Repair Materials Against Enterococcus Faecalis., Michael A. Tran
Antibacterial Activity Of Current Endodontic Repair Materials Against Enterococcus Faecalis., Michael A. Tran
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Introduction: Root canal perforations caused by pathologic or iatrogenic means have been shown to cause serious complications leading to overall tooth loss. Bacterial infection of the affected site results in failure of the root canal as well as an inflammatory response leading to the destruction of supporting tissues. Although a multitude of endodontic repair materials have been tested over the past several decades, recent introduction of bioceramic materials have shown favorable outcomes to repairs. Bioceramics not only exhibit excellent biocompatibility, but also may possess antibacterial properties due to their strong alkaline pH. The aim of this in vitro study was …
Regulator Of G Protein Signaling-21 (Rgs21) In Peripheral Taste Physiology., Adam Bryant Schroer
Regulator Of G Protein Signaling-21 (Rgs21) In Peripheral Taste Physiology., Adam Bryant Schroer
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The gustatory system subjects ingested food to ‘quality control’ that prevents consumption of harmful compounds while also regulating nutrient intake. A better understanding of the physiological regulation of taste will enhance our ability to facilitate the appropriate consumption of nutrients and improve overall health. Bitter, sweet, and umami tastes are detected by a family of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) that associate with heterotrimeric G proteins and initiate intracellular signaling cascades after activation by tastant binding. ‘Regulators of G protein Signaling’ (RGS proteins) act as Ga-directed GTPase-accelerating proteins (GAPs) and thereby accelerate inactivation of GPCR-mediated signaling. Rgs21 is selectively expressed in …
Supporting Secondary Mathematics Teacher Candidates In Enacting Responsive Teaching Across Contexts., Stephanie Jones
Supporting Secondary Mathematics Teacher Candidates In Enacting Responsive Teaching Across Contexts., Stephanie Jones
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Although the work of teaching is often considered universally straightforward, professional classroom teaching requires more than a teacher’s ability to complete a task; making students’ ideas central to classroom discussions is crucial to student learning. The ability to engage students in classroom discussions focused on student ideas is not innate; it must be developed. Thus, it is important for teacher candidates (TCs) to learn to focus class discussions on student ideas in the university setting, before becoming classroom teachers. This dissertation investigates the ways in which secondary mathematics TCs developed skill in responsive teaching—teaching in which teachers adapt their instruction …
Communicated Sex Roles And Gender Identity Gaps., Janelle Vickers
Communicated Sex Roles And Gender Identity Gaps., Janelle Vickers
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Using Communication Theory of Identity (CTI) and the Bem Sex Role Index (BSRI), this study addresses the potential impact of societally-created, gendered expectations on the satisfaction of emerging adults. Two hundred twenty-nine undergraduates at a large mid-Atlantic university participated in the study by completing an online survey assessing gender, identity, and a relationship with a close other of their choosing. Results replicate previous research using CTI, which suggests that identity gaps relating to gender are dissatisfying. Specifically, gaps at the personal-enacted, personal-relational, and the newly-created personal-personal levels were negatively related to participant satisfaction, and personal-relational gaps were negatively correlated with …
The Use Of Genetic Tools To Assist In White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) Management In West Virginia, Darren M. Wood
The Use Of Genetic Tools To Assist In White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) Management In West Virginia, Darren M. Wood
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Although nearly extinct historically, the current population of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in West Virginia serves as a plentiful resource, however; currently there are two uncertainties to the socio-economic benefits of white-tailed deer in West Virginia: poaching and chronic wasting disease (CWD). While infection with the disease invariably results in a 100% fatality rate, previous studies have indicated that nucleotide polymorphisms in the 285th and 286th position of the prion precursor gene (PRNP) have been associated with the delay of clinical disease symptoms. To determine the association with CWD positive individuals in a CWDaffected population in West Virginia and determine …

Songbird Response To Forest Disturbance Due To Unconventional Shale Gas Development In The Marcellus-Utica Region: A Multi-Scale Analysis., Laura S. Farwell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In this study, I evaluated impacts of unconventional shale gas development, or the combined use of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing (i.e., fracking), on forest land cover and breeding songbirds in the Marcellus-Utica shale region. Since 2005, extraction of natural gas from the Marcellus-Utica shale has increased exponentially in the central Appalachians, an area of high conservation value for global biodiversity. Although there has been an increase in research on the effects of shale gas development in the region, the industry is still relatively new in the eastern U.S. and much is still unknown about biological and environmental impacts. In …
Conductance Calculations For Semiconductor-Superconductor Majorana Structures, John Stenger
Conductance Calculations For Semiconductor-Superconductor Majorana Structures, John Stenger
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Majorana zero modes (MZMs), also called Majorana bound states (MBSs), are zeroenergy mid-gap modes localized near boundaries and topological defects in one- and twodimensional topological superconductors. These zero-energy modes have attracted significant attention in recent years because of their unique properties, particularly their non- Abelian exchange statistics and their ability to encode quantum information non-locally. These properties make the MZMs an ideal platform for fault-tolerant topological quantum computation. This type of quantum memory is robust against local perturbations, since the information is encoded non-locally, while the information processing, which can be done, for example, by braiding the MZMs, is topologically …
Dispositional Optimism And Autonomic Reactivity During Difficult And Easy Stress Tasks, Daniel Stephenson
Dispositional Optimism And Autonomic Reactivity During Difficult And Easy Stress Tasks, Daniel Stephenson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Studies examining the association between dispositional optimism and autonomic reactivity to stress have yielded mixed results, with some studies finding associations between optimism and less reactivity, some studies finding no association between optimism and reactivity, and some finding that optimism was associated with greater reactivity. One factor not considered previously in this literature is difficulty of the stressful task employed to elicit autonomic reactivity. The current study was based on Carver and Scheier's Behavioral Self-Regulation Model (Carver & Scheier, 2000), that states that optimists are more likely to persist in overcoming challenging obstacles than pessimists. The current study investigated whether …

Characterization Of Marital Violence Using Data From Six Countries In The World Health Organization World Mental Health Survey Initiative, Cara Mangine Stokes
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a pervasive global public health problem that occurs in all settings and cultural groups. Traditionally, IPV research has largely focused on identifying risk factors from those who have already been victimized. In contrast to descriptive statistics, this project utilized predictive modeling methods to develop a robust model to predict risk for IPV, defined as moderate physical violence occurring within current marriages. Data for this project come from six countries participating in the World Health Organization (WHO) World Mental Health (WMH) Survey Initiative. Analyses capitalized on the availability of data containing detailed pre-marital factors from both …

Study On Electrolyte-Gated Graphene Nanoelectronic Biosensors For Biomarker Detection, Jianbo Sun
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Biosensors are called upon to provide valuable benefits for human society in vital fields such as disease diagnosis, food inspection, environment monitoring, etc. Among the various biosensor architectures, the field effect transistor (FET) biosensors are promising as the next generation nanoelectronic biosensors, particularly attractive for point-of-care biomedical applications. The FET biosensors typically operate by measuring the conductance change of the semiconducting channel induced by the adsorption of the target biomolecules on it. The superior properties of graphene, including the unique electronic characteristics, facile functionalization and good biocompatibility, etc., make it an ideal building block for the FET biosensors. In this …

Syntheses And Properties Of Thiophene-Containing Cycloparaphenylenes And Related Macrocycles And A Strained Cyclophane, Haresh Thakellapalli
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Thiophene-containing cycloparaphenylenes (CPPs) bearing 8, 10 and 16 aromatic and heteroaromatic units in the macrocyclic structure were constructed. Specifically, two and four units of thiophene-2,5-diyl moiety were incorporated into functionalized [6]- and [12]CPP macro-cyclic carbon frameworks, respectively. Insertion of two 2,2'-bithiophene-5,5'-yl units into a functionalized [6]CPP carbon framework led to the formation of the 10-membered macrocycle. In addition, optical and electrochemical properties of these macrocycles were investigated.;The synthetic pathways for thiophene- and 9-fluorenone-containing donor-acceptor macrocycles were also developed. Synthetic pathways to conjugated macrocycles containing one, two, or three 2,7-bis(2-thienyl)-9H-fluoren-9-one (TFOT) units in the macrocyclic frameworks bearing 10, 16, or 24 …

Inclusion Of 9 Mm Firearm Type Using Quantitative Class Characteristics, Young Wang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The results of a data set of five models of 9 mm Luger caliber handguns suggest an algorithm such as the square of the Mahalanobis Distance as a step towards the creation of an electronic class characteristic database for cartridge cases to supplement the currently existing General Rifling Characteristic (GRC) database for bullets. The algorithm was validated using both hold-one out cross validation as well as on an entirely independent set of ground truth known cartridge cases which were blindly classified to mimic case work. A method for determining an objective threshold for inclusion onto a list for an investigator …
Evaluation Of An Event Detection System To Identify Spill Events Related To Marcellus Shale Development, Joseph C. Wickline
Evaluation Of An Event Detection System To Identify Spill Events Related To Marcellus Shale Development, Joseph C. Wickline
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
There has been an extraordinary growth in the production of natural gas within the Marcellus Shale region in the past two decades. This sharp increase in production corresponds to an increased risk to surface waters from spill events related to the industry. At present, there are some private organizations and government agencies which monitor water quality in the region using continuous monitoring. However, there are no protocols in place to use data from continuous monitoring stations to quickly detect contamination resulting from spills.;Previous research has found that standard water quality parameters, such as specific conductivity, pH, and dissolved oxygen, measured …
Developing A Framework To Understand Teachers' Self-Efficacy In The Teaching Of Writing, Barbara J. Wierzbicki
Developing A Framework To Understand Teachers' Self-Efficacy In The Teaching Of Writing, Barbara J. Wierzbicki
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study was to explore the ways in which the domain specific self-efficacies manifest themselves in the teaching of writing. A teachers' sense of efficacy is a multidimensional construct and is a significant construct in how teachers' view themselves as writers and teachers of writing. This study explored how five elementary classroom teachers viewed these domain specific self-efficacies and the ways in which the various sources of efficacy influenced their self-efficacy as writers and teachers of writing. The researcher collected and analyzed domain specific self-efficacy scales and individual interviews to capture the experiences of these teachers. There …
Standing In The Shadow Of Empire: Ideology In The Path To West Virginia Statehood, Kristen L. Wilkes
Standing In The Shadow Of Empire: Ideology In The Path To West Virginia Statehood, Kristen L. Wilkes
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
An empire of industry moved through West Virginia prior to the US Civil War, and saw a breed of capitalists and politicians who acquired control of land through purchase and through patent, developed control of the vote through industrial political influence, and encouraged the West Virginian to separate from an eastern Virginian society based in planter-elite agrarian society. The West Virginian who believed that self-sufficiency and subsistence farming could sustain his family saw his vote for statehood and separation from the Old Dominion transformed into an industrial coup. Land slowly but steadily slipped away from the hands of the mountaineer …

A Study On Graph Coloring And Digraph Connectivity, Murong Xu
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation focuses on coloring problems in graphs and connectivity problems in digraphs. We obtain the following advances in both directions.;1. Results in graph coloring. For integers k,r > 0, a (k,r)-coloring of a graph G is a proper coloring on the vertices of G with k colors such that every vertex v of degree d( v) is adjacent to vertices with at least min{lcub}d( v),r{rcub} different colors. The r-hued chromatic number, denoted by chir(G ), is the smallest integer k for which a graph G has a (k,r)-coloring.;For a k-list assignment L to vertices of a graph G, a linear …

Processing, Stability And High-Temperature Properties Of Transition Metal Silicide-Refractory Oxide Composites For Electrical Applications, Gunes Alp Yakaboylu
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Many common electrical materials used in the current sensing applications suffer from structural and functional issues related to high operating temperatures (750°-1600°C), alternating reducing/oxidizing atmospheres, high pressures and corrosive environments. Therefore, there is a need for development of new materials, which are capable to operate under high-temperature and harsh-environments to provide real-time, accurate sensing during industrial processes such as coal gasification and power generation. In this study, electroconductive ceramic composites were fabricated by incorporating the 20-90 vol% of transition metal silicides (MoSi2, WSi2, NbSi2, TaSi 2, CrSi2) within refractory oxides (Al2O 3, ZrO2, Cr2O3), followed by sintering at 1370°-1600°C in …
