Study Of Biomimetic Micro And Macro Structures For Drag Reduction, Justin S. Schrout Jan 2018

Study Of Biomimetic Micro And Macro Structures For Drag Reduction, Justin S. Schrout

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The ever increasing demand for global travel coupled with increasing costs of fuels have prompted many researchers to study new methods to save fuel to make travel more efficient. One of the proverbial low-hanging fruits for fuel efficiency is aerodynamic drag reduction. Simple changes in the shape or placement of structures on the surface of different types of vehicles have been shown to increase fuel efficiency by reducing drag (e.g., add-on lower and aft wake fairings on tractor trailers which have seen a tremendous rise in popularity on US highways in recent years). Areas of interest in drag reduction have …

"Squeezed Between The Gunshots And The Gentrifiers”: Urban Agriculture In Philadelphia's Kensington Neighborhood, Arianna Hall-Reinhard

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Urban agriculture (UA) is part of the broader alternative food movement and a potential avenue through which to “do” food justice work. UA projects in the urban Global North are frequently motivated by social and food justice goals. Despite these guiding ideals, UA projects in America are rife with internal contradictions, including those related to racial inequalities, complex gentrification dynamics, and funding realities. In this paper, I employ the conceptual frameworks of food justice and urban political ecology to consider how gentrification and UA project funding structures affect five specific UA projects in Philadelphia’s Kensington neighborhood. While the loss of …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

There are a variety of stakeholders when it comes to space (the military, other governmental entities, private sector companies, consumers, the scientific community, etc.), and they would all prefer the operational lives of their satellites, observatories, space stations, and other assets to be maximized. Out of the large number of assets in space, only a few were designed with serviceability as a goal. The ability to service "non-cooperative" satellites is an ongoing project being investigated by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) and Satellite Servicing Projects Division (SSPD), along with other industrial partners. Knowledge Asset Value And Network Safeguards: Impacts And Outcomes, Karen R. Nicholas Jan 2018

Knowledge Asset Value And Network Safeguards: Impacts And Outcomes, Karen R. Nicholas

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Knowledge is a key resource for firms, capable of providing a firm-level competitive advantage. Interfirm networks are a valuable source of knowledge for firms, as both breadth and depth of knowledge can be developed via interfirm relationships. However, for firms that have acquired and developed valuable knowledge assets, they may view their interfirm network as providing an opportunity for knowledge loss via knowledge spillovers. Knowledge spillovers allow the recipient to gain knowledge without compensation to the knowledge-originating firm. Spillovers lead to a loss of present and future value to the knowledge-originating firm. Indeed, firms with valuable knowledge asset may implement …

Efficient Wound Assessment System With An Rgb-D Camera, Xiang Gao Jan 2018

Efficient Wound Assessment System With An Rgb-D Camera, Xiang Gao

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Continuous monitoring of changes in wound size, wound area, and volume, is key to predict whether wounds will heal on time. Wound measurement methods can be subdivided into non- contact and contact methods. Contact methods are prone to errors given the human intervention and it increases the chance of discomfort during measurement. Alternative methods, such as image- based non-contact methods, eliminate any discomfort and have good reliability for measuring a wound. However, existing image-based non-contact methods are expensive. This is because these methods build a 3D model of the wound using expensive devices in order to allow the clinician to …

Existence Of Global Solutions For Nonlinear Magnetohydrodynamics With Finite Larmor Radius Corrections, Fariha Elsrrawi Jan 2018

Existence Of Global Solutions For Nonlinear Magnetohydrodynamics With Finite Larmor Radius Corrections, Fariha Elsrrawi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

We discuss the existence of global solutions to the MHD equations where the effects of finite Larmor radius corrections are taken into account. Unlike the usual MHD, the pressure is a tensor and it depends on not only the density but also the magnetic field. We show the existence of global solutions by the energy methods. Our techniques of proof are based on the existence of local solution by Semigroups theory and a priori estimates.

Investigating The Relationships Between Family Communication Patterns, Academic Resilience, And Students’ Classroom Communication Behaviors, Jordan Atkinson Jan 2018

Investigating The Relationships Between Family Communication Patterns, Academic Resilience, And Students’ Classroom Communication Behaviors, Jordan Atkinson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation served two purposes. The first purpose was to examine the relationships between the two dimensions of family communication patterns (i.e., conversation orientation and conformity orientation) and four student classroom communication behaviors (i.e., out-of-class communication, in-class oral participation, instructional dissent, and students’ motives to communicate with their instructors). The second purpose of this dissertation was to investigate academic resilience as a mediator in the relationship between family communication patterns and student classroom communication behaviors. It was discovered that students’ family conversation orientation was associated positively with their oral participation and the relational, functional, participatory, and excuse-making motives to communicate …

Exploring The Bidirectional Effects Of Personality And Negative Social Interactions Across Adulthood, Nicole M. S. Belanger Jan 2018

Exploring The Bidirectional Effects Of Personality And Negative Social Interactions Across Adulthood, Nicole M. S. Belanger

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Personality and negative social interactions (NSIs; interactions with social network members that are perceived to be a violation of relationship norms; Brooks & Dunkel Schetter, 2011) are associated with detrimental health outcomes (Hampson & Friedman, 2008; Hill, Weston, & Jackson, 2014). Personality is also associated with the occurrence of NSIs (Allemand, Schaffhuser, & Martin, 2015; Bono, Boles, Judge, & Lauver, 2002; Silva, Henrie, & Patrick, 2016). However, both of these constructs change across adulthood (Carstensen, Isaacowitz, & Charles, 1999; Roberts, Wood, & Smith, 2005) so it is important to understand how the associations between these two variables may change over …

Walking Upright: An Actor's Blueprint Of Process And Character Development In Exit, Pursued By A Bear By Lauren Gunderson, Imani R. Berry

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

There has been an increased emphasis for college instruction to incorporate more active and collaborative involvement of students in the learning process. These views have been asserted by The Association of American Colleges (AAC), the National Science Foundation (NSF), and The National Research Counsel (NRC), which are advocating for the modification of traditional instructional techniques to allow students the opportunity to be more cooperative (Task Group on General Education, 1988). This has guided educators and facilitators into shifting teaching paradigms from a teacher centered to a more student-centered curriculum. The present study investigated achievement outcomes and attitudes of learners in …

Detecting The Onset Of The Bulk Crystal Plasticity Transition In Face Centered Cubic Metals Using Nanoindentation, Ryder Bolin Jan 2018

Detecting The Onset Of The Bulk Crystal Plasticity Transition In Face Centered Cubic Metals Using Nanoindentation, Ryder Bolin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The present thesis showcases the investigation of nanoindentation at ultra-low depths (<500nm), for the study of the origin and initiation of crystal plasticity in a number of Face Centered Cubic (FCC) metals: Nickel (Ni), Copper (Cu), and Aluminum (Al) in single crystalline or polycrystalline form. Nanoindentation was carried out using a Berkovich tip, and indentations were carried out in the nano-regime of polycrystalline FCC metals and single crystalline Cu and Al. Two custom-built four-point bending apparatuses were used to apply in-plane tension on all samples during indentation. Samples were indented using both displacement and load controls, in order to both carefully estimate the hardness and plasticity noise as a function of depth and applied in-plane tension. The noisy character of crystal plasticity manifests itself through nanoindentation pop-in events, which are abrupt and stochastic plastic displacements during the initial stage of plasticity. I discuss and demonstrate indentation size effects induced and/or promoted by the in-plane stress in FCC materials. The hardness analysis shows a statistically inverse dependence on in-plane stress for small depth indentation and I discuss the consistency of the effects in both the hardness and pop-in events among the various FCC crystals studied. Finally, I discuss a novel approach to detect the onset of pop-in noise in a realistic sample without special treatment and demonstrate its consistency for Cu single crystalline samples.
