Systematic Characterization And Analysis Of Resistance From Conductors And Electrodes For Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, Alec Hinerman Jan 2018

Systematic Characterization And Analysis Of Resistance From Conductors And Electrodes For Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, Alec Hinerman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Solid oxide fuel cells are all ceramic devices that generate electricity by direct electrochemical reactions of a fuel and oxidizer. Recent efforts are underway to reduce the operating temperature of solid oxide fuel cells which allow these devices to become more economically competitive. However, at decreased temperatures the resistance from key electrochemical processes greatly increases. The presented work encompasses the characterization and analysis of resistances from conductors and electrodes in solid oxide fuel cells. Ionic conductivity is a thermally activated process; therefore, the conductivity of the ion conducting phase must be improved for suitable operation at lower temperatures. Ionic transport …

Structural Origins Of The Doonerak Anticline, Central Brooks Range, Alaska, Gregory James Hammond Jan 2018

Structural Origins Of The Doonerak Anticline, Central Brooks Range, Alaska, Gregory James Hammond

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Doonerak anticline in the central Brooks Range, Alaska, exposes a package of Early Paleozoic metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks overlain by Carboniferous to Triassic sedimentary rocks which have been correlated to the North Slope subsurface. The flanks of the anticline have been interpreted as portions of a single north-vergent nappe system emplaced during the Brookian orogeny. The Doonerak anticline is a key location for understanding the structure of the Brooks Range fold and thrust belt. Field mapping, microstructural analysis, Raman-spectroscopy of carbonaceous material (RSCM) paleothermometry, and detrital zircon geochronology data suggest the structure is not a tectonic window resulting from …

Spontaneous Formation Of Ion Holes And Ion Beams In Expanding Plasmas, Evan M. Aguirre Jan 2018

Spontaneous Formation Of Ion Holes And Ion Beams In Expanding Plasmas, Evan M. Aguirre

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Presented here are direct, spatially resolved measurements of the spontaneous formation of a steady-state, ion accelerating structure and an ion hole in the plume of an expanding, low- pressure plasma. Ion velocity distribution function (IVDF) measurements, obtained with laser induced fluorescence, are taken parallel and perpendicular to the background magnetic field in an argon helicon plasma. The parallel IVDFs show an ion beam with v ≈ 8,000 m/s flowing downstream and confined to the center of the discharge. The ion beam is measurable for tens of centimeters along the expansion axis before the LIF signal fades, likely a result of …

Influence Of The Lewis Number And Boundary Conditions On Finger Flame Acceleration, Mohammed Alawi Alkhabbaz Jan 2018

Influence Of The Lewis Number And Boundary Conditions On Finger Flame Acceleration, Mohammed Alawi Alkhabbaz

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Influence of the Lewis Number and Boundary Conditions on Finger Flame Acceleration Mohammed AlKhabbaz One of the mechanisms of premixed flame acceleration in pipes is devoted to the following scenario: an initially hemispherical flame embryo, ignited at a closed end of a tube or a channel with one end open, at a tube/channel centerline, eventually acquires a convex, finger-like shape. This is accompanied by powerful flame acceleration, which lasts until the flame skirt contacts a sidewall of the tube/channel and is followed by flame deceleration and formation of a concave, "tulip" flame shape. While this phenomenon has been observed and …

Transforming Undergraduate Stem Education: Reforming Classrooms By Training Current And Future Faculty, Karen E. Bailey Jan 2018

Transforming Undergraduate Stem Education: Reforming Classrooms By Training Current And Future Faculty, Karen E. Bailey

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In the absence of formal pedagogical training, educators tend to teach the way they were taught, using traditional lecturing. Numerous studies have shown that engaging students in active learning improves student learning and retention of knowledge. Reforming STEM education has become a national imperative. Since the turn of the millennium, many initiatives have sprung forth in response to a growing awareness of the need for reform in post-secondary biology education. The National Academies Summer Institutes (NASI) is one such initiative. The Summer Institutes provide training in evidence-based strategies for biology educators from primarily research universities where lecture-based teaching in large …

The Role Of Kndy Neurons And Neuronal Nitric Oxide Synthase In The Control Of Reproduction In Female Sheep And Nonhuman Primates, Michelle Nichole Bedenbaugh

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) secretion from the hypothalamus is an important regulator of ovarian function and reproductive cyclicity. During the reproductive cycle, the pattern of GnRH secretion from the hypothalamus, and subsequently luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion from the anterior pituitary, is modulated by ovarian hormones. However, the effects of estradiol (E2) and progesterone cannot be directly communicated to GnRH neurons because these neurons do not express progesterone receptors or estrogen receptor alpha (ERalpha), the estrogen receptor that influences estrogenic regulation of GnRH secretion. Thus, neuronal intermediates that do express these receptors must exist to communicate steroidal feedback to GnRH neurons. Kisspeptin, …

Medicine Bag: An Autoethnographic Account Of Learning To Use Memory And Indigeneity As Resources In College Advising, R. Saya Bobick Jan 2018

Medicine Bag: An Autoethnographic Account Of Learning To Use Memory And Indigeneity As Resources In College Advising, R. Saya Bobick

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Autoethnography was used to investigate lived experiences of self to connect the individual to the cultural (Ellis et al., 2011). My life's recollections were gathered together in a metaphorical personal medicine bag. The use of memory work and storytelling/histories helped to "reframe the old understandings of history and memory" (Clare & Johnson, 2000, p. 210). The conceptual framework was situated within an autoethnographic approach that included three components. The first component was Indigenous ideas, which included memory as a process of decolonization, telling stories past-present-future, and oral traditions/histories. The second included feminist ideas about memory with descriptions of memory work …

Effect Of Natural Gas Fuel Composition On Gaseous And Particle Numbermass Emissions From A Heavy-Duty Natural Gas Engine Used In Unconventional Well Development Operations, Sashank Jammalamadaka

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Natural gas (NG) reserves have been discovered in abundance with the aid of various technological advancements in the field of directional drilling and hydraulic fracturing. Prime movers of unconventional well development were previously identified to be over-the-road (OTR) trucks, drilling engines, and hydraulic stimulation engines. The increased NG reserves have driven the industry to shift from using diesel fueled engines to natural gas engines. This allows the industries to take advantage of the produced natural gas to be directly used as energy source to fuel the prime movers involved with unconventional well development.;The primary objective of this study is to …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Purpose: This study evaluated the influence of phonemic similarity as a variable that facilitates contextual interference (CI), a motor learning phenomenon where poor performance during training results in enhanced performance in transfer conditions. A CI effect was hypothesized: speech performance would be enhanced for nonwords with similar phonemes during the retention phase of motor learning, but only enhanced by nonwords with dissimilar phonemes in the transfer phase.;Method: Twenty-nine young adults with typical speech and hearing participated in a motor-learning study comprised of nonword repetition training followed by an immediate retention and transfer task for nonwords with similar and dissimilar phonemes. …

How Connectedness To Nature Relates To Well-Being Over Time, Amy Knepple Carney Jan 2018

How Connectedness To Nature Relates To Well-Being Over Time, Amy Knepple Carney

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Correlational and experimental studies have found evidence that connectedness to nature (CN) leads to increases in well-being. Higher CN relates to higher positive affect, lower negative affect, and better health (Herzog & Strevey, 2008; Korpela & Ylen, 2007; Mayer, Frantz, Bruehlman-Senecal, & Dolliver, 2009). Little research, though, has examined the relation of CN and well-being over time. With the lack of longitudinal data, it is impossible to assess how CN might be associated with well-being and health over a person's lifetime. This study is among the first to evaluate CN and well-being with three-time points. Final analyses were conducted on …

Prediction Of Thrombus Formation In Ladder Network And Stability Of Thrombus In A Bifurcation, Hari Hara Sudhan Lakshmanan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Thrombus formation on complex branched networks like extracorporeal membrane oxygenators (ECMO) is poorly understood. In this work, we built a COMSOL model on branched networks, to understand and predict the thrombus formation under blood flow. A microfluidic ladder network design was used to study the change in hemodynamics. The microfluidic ladder sizes are chosen to mimic the physiologically relevant shear rates of 300 s--1 and 700 s--1 in main channels and bypasses respectively. The COMSOL model results were analyzed to understand the flow dynamics inside the ladder network. We predicted the thrombus nucleation points in the ladder network, based on …

Temperature Simulation And Heat Exchange In A Batch Reactor Using Ansys Fluent, Rahul Kooragayala

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Internal combustion (IC) engines are the main power source for on-road and off-road vehicles. Natural gas (NG) is a cleaner alternative for conventional petroleum-based fuels. A solution to avoid some of the issues associated with a gaseous fuel is to convert the methane in NG to a liquid fuel such as methanol. This thesis is part of a larger experimental and simulation effort at West Virginia University dedicated to the development of a direct methane-to-methanol conversion technology based on an innovative homogeneous catalysis and a novel reactor design. The goal was to support the experimental effort by using the simulation …

Emotion Regulation And Attrition In Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, Corey C. Lieneman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

As evidence of the importance of emotion regulation (ER) continues to mount, little is known about how families dealing with child behavior problems can better develop this important ability. This study explored the relations among a caregiver training program for children with severe problem behaviors (i.e., Parent-Child Interaction Therapy; PCIT), child ER, caregiver ER, parent-ing stress, and attrition. This study was part of a larger investigation evaluating the impact of in-centives on treatment outcomes. Measures of caregiver and child ER, child behavior problems, and parenting stress were completed by caregivers referred for PCIT from a predominantly low-income community sample of …

Evaluating The Recovery Of Dna From Adhesive Tape After Exposure To Heat And Humidity: Assessing The Degradation Index And Str Profile, Emily Davis Jan 2018

Evaluating The Recovery Of Dna From Adhesive Tape After Exposure To Heat And Humidity: Assessing The Degradation Index And Str Profile, Emily Davis

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

It is not uncommon for forensic DNA samples to be degraded or of low quantity; these types of samples can pose challenges throughout analysis and an informative STR profile is not guaranteed. DNA analysis is also very expensive and timely; therefore, it is necessary to understand where to sample a piece of evidence to obtain the best quality and quantity of DNA from the substrate, especially in the case of trace DNA samples which may be difficult to detect. It is also necessary to know when to proceed with analysis given the quality of the sample. The aim of this …

Dissensual Women: Modernist Women Writers, The Senses, And Technology, Allyson Demaagd Jan 2018

Dissensual Women: Modernist Women Writers, The Senses, And Technology, Allyson Demaagd

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

My project, Dissensual Women: Modernist Women Writers, the Senses, and Technology, analyzes depictions of the senses and technology in modernist women's writing. I argue that modernist women writers challenge traditional sensory hierarchies that value the so-called masculine senses of sight and sound and denigrate the so-called feminine senses of smell, taste, and touch. H.D., Mina Loy, Virginia Woolf, and Elizabeth Bowen revalue the feminine senses, challenge sensory elitism, and advocate for an inclusive sensorium, one that features the perceptions and experiences of women, queer women, the lower classes, the nonhuman, and the differently abled. They wage their dissent through experimentation …

Welding Fume Exposure And Lung Cancer: Evidence Of Lung Toxicity And Tumor Promotion From In Vivo Studies In Aj Mice, Lauryn Falcone

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Welding fumes were recently reclassified as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) based on sufficient epidemiological evidence and limited evidence in animals. It is estimated that 11 million workers worldwide weld full-time, and an additional 110 million have had some type of welding-related exposure. Welding exposures are complex because of the diversity of welding modalities used in the workplace; these modalities include exposures to non-carcinogenic and/or carcinogenic metal containing fumes.;The objective of this dissertation was to determine which welding fumes and their component metals are the most toxic and have the greatest …

Pulsars As Calibration Tools And X-Ray Observations Of Spider Pulsars, Peter Anthony Gentile Jan 2018

Pulsars As Calibration Tools And X-Ray Observations Of Spider Pulsars, Peter Anthony Gentile

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

We present the polarization pulse profiles for 29 pulsars observed with the Arecibo Observatory by the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) timing project at 2.1 GHz, 1.4 GHz, and 430 MHz. These profiles represent the most sensitive polarimetric millisecond pulsar profiles to date, revealing the existence of microcomponents (that is, pulse components with peak intensities much lower than the total pulse peak intensity). Although microcomponents have been detected in some pulsars previously, we are able to detect new microcomponents for PSRs B1937+21, J1713+0747, and J2234+0944. We also present rotation measures for 28 of these pulsars, determined independently …

Predicting Student Success In Online Physical Education, Tyler Goad Jan 2018

Predicting Student Success In Online Physical Education, Tyler Goad

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Background/Purpose: Scholars have posited that the demand for online learning is not going away, and the question is no longer if online physical education (OLPE) is practical but rather, what are the most effective ways of administering OLPE to accommodate students (Daum & Buschner, 2012). Currently, limited data are available on student retention rates and attrition factors in OLPE courses. Several early OLPE studies (Brewer, 2001; Mosier, 2010; Ransdell et al., 2008) as well as the 2007 NASPE Initial Guidelines for Online Physical Education have suggested that certain prescreening efforts be in place prior to student enrollment in OLPE, however, …

Masked ducks (Nomonyx dominicus), migratory northern ruddy ducks (Oxyura jamaicensis jamaicensis), non-migratory West Indian ruddy ducks (Oxyura j. jamaicensis Gmelin), and West Indian whistling-ducks (Dendrocygna arborea) are all duck taxa that have declining populations in Puerto Rico. Masked ducks are listed as endangered in Puerto Rico and are a species of concern in the Caribbean while West Indian whistling ducks are considered an "at-risk" species listed as vulnerable. All 4 taxa of duck have areas of their life history where information is lacking including behavioral information. I studied the 4 taxa of duck at Laguna Cartagena National Wildlife Refuge from …

Spatial Fourier Transform For Blind Detection Of Radio Observations Of Rotating Radio Transients, Xiaoqian He Jan 2018

Spatial Fourier Transform For Blind Detection Of Radio Observations Of Rotating Radio Transients, Xiaoqian He

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In this thesis we propose a new blind algorithm, which we call Energy in Transformed Data (ETD), for the detection of isolated astrophysical pulses. Unlike the conventional algorithm, which requires de-dispersion, integration over frequency channels and matched filtering, the ETD algorithm detects pulses in a space reciprocal to the space of filterbank data. The ETD algorithm is implemented in three steps: (1) it applies the Spatial Fourier Transform (SFT) to filterbank data, (2) it evaluates the energy of signal in the transformed space, and (3) it compares the value of the total energy to a threshold. If the energy in …

An Exploration Of Diversity And Inclusion In Introductory Physics, Rachel J. Henderson Jan 2018

An Exploration Of Diversity And Inclusion In Introductory Physics, Rachel J. Henderson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Diversity and inclusion has been a concern for the physics community for nearly 50 years. Despite significant efforts including the American Physical Society (APS) Conferences for Undergraduate Women in Physics (CUWiP) and the APS Bridge Program, women, African Americans, and Hispanics continue to be substantially underrepresented in the physics profession. Similar efforts within the field of engineering, whose students make up the majority of students in the introductory calculus-based physics courses, have also met with limited success. With the introduction of research-based instruments such as the Force Concept Inventory (FCI), the Force and Motion Conceptual Evaluation (FMCE), and the Conceptual …

Assessment Of Melanistic Lesions In Smallmouth Bass ( Micropterus Dolomieu) Of The Chesapeake Bay, Usa, Kelsey T. Young

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) are an important sportfish in the Susquehanna and Potomac River Basins of the Chesapeake Bay drainage. However, population declines in portions of the Susquehanna, fish kills and reports of visible abnormalities such as melanistic spots have raised concern among the public and resource managers. Although the etiology or risk factors associated with melanistic lesions are unknown, there is a propensity to attribute the abnormality to contaminants. Melanistic lesions of smallmouth bass were assessed using histopathology and gene expression analysis to evaluate the cellular and molecular changes compared to normal skin. The prevalence of melanistic …
