The purpose of this study was to investigate possible relationships among selected psychological, sociological, and economic characteristics of doctoral students and compare these characteristics to the completion or noncompletion of EdD degrees in the College of Human Resources and Education at West Virginia University. In addition, academic departments within the college were compared on eight variables to see if differences within departments contributed to completion or noncompletion of the EdD. A questionnaire, specifically designed for this study, was mailed to 254 EdD recipients and 287 nongraduates. A response rate of 82.98% of the graduates and 63.40% of the nongraduates was …

The overall goal of this study was to develop warrants or guidelines for the installation of active warning devices without speed selection (fixed-distance systems) and active warning devices with speed selection (constant warning time systems) at railroad highway grade crossings. This objective was achieved by the use of the FRA grade crossing inventory and accident data bases to develop accident rates, effectiveness values, statistical models to determine which variables are significantly related to accidents, and a benefit cost analysis, all of which were used in warrant development. The objective of this dissertation is two fold: (1) to investigate the long-run sensitivities of energy demand to price changes, and the degree of interfactor and interfuel substitution possibilities in the Korean industrial and residential sectors; and (2) to examine in what way and to what extent the energy aspects conflict with overall development objectives in Korea. Unlike other energy demand studies, the industrial sector is further disaggregated into nine manufacturing and three non-manufacturing subsectors. From an investigation of the entire published works of John Dewey, as well as much of his personal correspondence, this dissertation described and analyzed Dewey's concept of the child. It was discovered that Dewey's concept evolved through interactions with his family and, to a lesser extent, his social milieu. Despite some inconsistencies in his writings about the child, arising primarily from his attempts to persuade his audience to make societal changes benefiting the child, Dewey developed a cohesive, comprehensive concept--a concept which emphasized a view of the child as an active, growing being. This study was designed to investigate the relationship between the clinical experience of baccalaureate nursing students and (1) the identification of accurate clinical nursing judgments, and (2) the development of professional identity. Sixteen students registered for a required clinical course completed data collection instruments. The eight students in the control group completed the clinical course as prescribed in the curriculum; the eight students in the experimental group received no assigned clinical experience during the block of time in which the intervention occurred. The purpose of this research was to investigate the relationships between the learner's diagnosed preference for structure and the academic achievement of intermediate level students in a unit on energy resources when the instructional environments is congruent with and dissonant with the learner's diagnosed structural preferences. The purpose of this study was to devise and implement a pre-writing learning strategy to measure through syntactic analysis the growth in written products for twelve college freshmen with learning disabilities. Strategy training consisted of modeling, verbal rehearsal and prompting, without concurrent steps of positive and corrective feedback. Utilizing an A-B Follow-up design syntactic measurements of T-units and clauses were computed during baseline, treatment, and follow-up phases of the study. Results of means during each phase determined that 58% increased T-unit length and 50% increased clause length in their writings. The remaining subjects either remained the same or regressed in …

The steroid hormones, estrogen and progesterone, are known to have regulatory functions in normal mammary tissue and in some tumors of the breast. We report here the occurrence, partial purification, and preliminary characterization of peroxidase from bovine mammary tissue, and the presence and steroid hormone influences on peroxidase and lactate dehydrogenase in human breast cancer cells in tissue culture. Six human breast cancer cell lines and one human breast cell line derived from normal epithelial cells have been assayed for the presence and estrogen-inducibility of peroxidase and lactate dehydrogenase. Morphological and carbohydrate histochemical changes were studied in the major salivary glands of male and female mice rendered experimentally diabetic with alloxan. This model presents a hypoinsulinemic, potentially ketotic diabetic syndrome which is non-insulin requiring. Since mouse submandibular gland sexual dimorphism is known to be affected by androgens and diabetes is known to have a hypogonadic effect, the salivary glands of male diabetic mice were compared with unafflicted littermates as well as with diabetic animals supplemented with testosterone or insulin. Studies were designed to investigate the regulatory mechanism involved in maintaining the spontaneous activity of serotonergic neurons in the DRN, MRN and RPN. In vitro recordings were made within these nuclei in order to determine the effects of several different compounds on firing rates and cell/track ratios. Neurons within the DRN, MRN and RPN displayed rhythmic discharge rates. Pretreatment with PCPA or treatment with high magnesium, low calcium produced no significant change in the firing rates of these neurons. Apparently, stringent levels of intracellular serotonin are not necessary for maintaining the spontaneous activity of serotonergic neurons. Phenylephrine administration produced no …

Educators working with mentally retarded and other severely communication-delayed students have begun incorporating sign language into their curriculum to promote language development. In most instances, these methods do not facilitate generalization to the natural environment where the language is actually used. This study investigated whether acquisition of sign language with moderately mentally retarded individuals is attained faster when taught in home settings by the parent or at school by the teacher in a clinical environment. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the manipulation of the rates of specified teacher behaviors (specific observation followed by reinforcement) on the percentage of ALT-PE of students participating in public school physical education classes. A multi-element research design was employed to observe two classes of fifth grade students during a fifteen day treatment period. Temperature dependence of all the optical absorption bands of MnF(,2) in the range 2000-6000 (ANGSTROM) has been studied using Cary 14 spectrophotometer in conjunction with Air Products Displex, a closed cycle helium refrigerator. Peak position, width and oscillator strength of the bands, namely A through I, were measured as a function of temperature in the region between 10 K-300 K, with a particular attention to the region near the Neel temperature (T(,N) = 67.3 K). Schwartz and his colleagues (Davidson & Schwartz, 1976; Schwartz, Davidson, & Goleman, 1978) have argued that there are specific types of relaxation responses that occur in response to different types of relaxation training. Various techniques believed to produce cognitive or somatic forms of relaxation have been identified, but the empirical evidence in support of the specific effects hypothesis is mixed with adults and absent with children. The Indochina phase of the Geneva Conference of 1954 played a critical role in the ending of the First Indochina War and prepared the way for the involvement of the United States in the Vietnam conflict. Little is understood of the conference because of a paucity of information available. Recently, this deficiency has been corrected somewhat as various departments and agencies have begun to declassify documents. In coal mining the belt haulage system can be resolved into three component belt types: section belts, transfer belts, and gathering belts. In contrast to section and transfer belts which receive loads from a single source, gathering belts receive loads from two or more sources. Therefore the capacity requirements for these belts are dependent upon the individual source loads that will superimpose on them. Since belt loading is intermittent and often of short and varying duration, it is difficult to determine the extent of this superimposing. The orientation of the optical axis, or the minimum reflectance of the reflectance indicatrix of vitrinite, can be used to indicate the direction of maximum stress, i.e., the resultant stress of vertical compaction and lateral stress, during coalification. Furthermore, the attitude of the minimum reflectance with reference to bedding plane is a good parameter for evaluating whether maximum thermal maturation is achieved prior to or after folding or other structural changes, and thus reflects the tectonic and coalification history of coal. The dissolution effectiveness of a solvent solution of 50% aqueous sodium hydroxide and elemental sulfur was studied. The effects of varying amounts of added elemental sulfur (from 0.5% to 50% of the weight of the coal plus sulfur) over a temperature range of 100(DEGREES)C to 250(DEGREES)C and reaction times from 10 minutes to 3 hours were examined. The coals used in the study were a Bakerstown bituminous, a Wyodak subbituminous, a North Dakota lignite, and a Savage lignite. Mossbauer Effect Spectroscopy was used in conjunction with x-ray diffraction catalysts in order to obtain a better understanding of the role of manganese and the effect of the support on these bimetallic catalysts. This study was carried out on the bimetallic catalysts iron-manganese supported on alumina or silicalite with different percentages of loading and under various treatments (calcination, reduction, carburization, and during Fischer-Tropsch reaction). The purpose of this research was to compare the effects of reality therapy in the elementary music classroom to the effects of two other disciplinary systems: removal from the class activity, and the assignment of extra work. Specifically, the effects of the three systems on student perceptions of classroom behavior and student attitude were compared. The amount of perceived disorderly behavior typical of each class was measured by the "My Class Inventory." Student attitude toward music class was measured by a semantic differential adapted by the researcher: the "Music Class Attitude Scale." The purpose of this research was to determine if there were any differences in (1) lumbar spine flexion moments or (2) activity of the lumbar erector spinae or external oblique muscles while varying (1) lumbar postures and (2) hand heights used to lift a load. A completely randomized design with repeated measures was used. 20 male workers (32.9 (+OR-) 12.4 years, 178.3 (+OR-) 6.8 cm, 81 (+OR-) 14.7 kg) employed in positions requiring manual lifting assumed specific lumbar spine postures (subject preferred, kyphotic, straight or lordotic), lifted a 157 N crate to three different hand heights (25, 50, 76 cm), …
