This study evaluates factors that could affect human performance in the event of an unexpected robot motion. The study evaluated the following factors associated with a robot work station: illumination level, noise level, the luminance contrast between the robot and its background, the amount of attention required by a task being performed while monitoring the movement of the robot, the motion speed of the robot, and finally the field where unexpected motions were initiated. This study examined whether socially neglected, rejected, and/or behaviorally withdrawn girls differed from peers on measures of internalizing behaviors, namely depression and anxiety. Two-hundred thirty-two third through fifth grade girls were classified along two dimensions of a 4 x 2 factorial design: peer status (popular, rejected, neglected, average) and withdrawal status (withdrawn, not withdrawn). One-hundred twenty-nine girls fit into subject groups and completed the Child Depression Inventory, the Children's Attributional Style Questionnaire, and the Social Anxiety Scale for Children. Their parents completed the Child Depression Inventory and the Child Behavior Checklist on their daughters. Teachers completed the Child Behavior Checklist …

In view of the success of American program planning models and their potential contribution to adult education centers at the national universities of Egypt, the researcher wanted to investigate the usefulness of such models to the Egyptian national universities. Six U.S. program planning models by Boyle (1981), Houle (1972), Knowles (1970), Knox and Associates (1980), Sork and Buskey (1986), and Tyler (1949) were selected and synthesized. This study examines the relationship between selected characteristics (independent variable) and locus of control (dependent variable) of nursing academic administrators (deans). Locus of control (LOC) was defined as deans' scores on Levenson's I, P, and C Scales. Eighteen (18) hypotheses were proposed regarding the following dean characteristics and their LOC: age, academic achievement, level of basic nursing preparation, socio-political involvement, means of attaining current decanal position, and type of preparation for academic administrative role. An Investigation Of Academic Correlates Of Baccalaureate Graduates' Performance On The National Council Licensure Examination For Registered Nurses., Judith Ann Mckinney

This causal-comparative ex post facto study was designed to determine whether any of the independent variables, singularly or in combination were predictive of NCLEX-RN success, and to identify the point or points in time when students at risk for failure could be accurately identified. The variables examined were pre-admission variables (HS GPA, SAT scores), matriculation variables including the GPA from the courses in the humanities, math and natural sciences, the social sciences, nursing courses, and the AssessTest score. A significant positive relationship between the AssessTest score and the NCLEX-RN was demonstrated at p {dollar}<{dollar} 0.05. The strongest combination of predictor variables, although not statistically significant, were the Assesstest score, social sciences, senior, and nursing GPA. Together these variables accounted for 53.0 percent of the variance in NCLEX-RN outcomes for the students who passed and failed. Discriminant analysis enabled the correct classification of 87 percent of the sample using these variables. This study indicates that students can be most accurately identified at the end of the senior year. The statistical analysis using stepwise regression and discriminant analysis were helpful in increasing the credibility of the predictor variables. Attempts to predict NCLEX-RN performance throughout the student's academic career serves as a valuable resource for nursing faculty.

This dissertation uses empirical estimates of the pension - nonpension saving trade-off suggested by the life-cycle hypothesis to test when individuals perceive their real pension benefits accruing. Pension theory presents two opposing views concerning the timing of pension benefit accrual. One view is that real pension wealth only accumulates as it is legally guaranteed. Thus, unvested workers have zero pension assets because if they quit, were fired, or the pension plan were terminated, they would be entitled to no legal benefits. Due to the structure of most pension plans, vested pension benefits accrue disproportionately near retirement. Under this "legal" view …

In an effort to better understand the patterns of life stress sources, stress reactions, and perceptions of control over life situations of college student-athletes, a battery of three self-report instruments were administered to 400 male and female student-athletes at a medium size, land grant university. Responses from 263 individuals on the Campus Stress Questionnaire, Levenson's locus of control questionnaire, and the Sport Competition Anxiety Test, indicated that the student-athletes perceived they experienced significantly greater amounts of overall life stress, cognitive stress symptoms, and less sport competition anxiety than the norm. This work reports on three projects undertaken with the aim of learning more about complex behavior such as multiple steady states in a CSTR and traveling waves and spatial structures in unstirred solutions. Bistability in the permanganate-oxalate system was studied spectrophotometrically and computationally using a CSTR in a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Absorbance of the solution was monitored as a function of flow rate. Regional subsurface correlation and mapping is combined with outcrop study to provide a basin analysis of Acadian clastic wedge deposition in northern West Virginia. This analysis describes regional stratigraphy, deposystems, controls, architecture and paleogeography of Upper Devonian and Lower Mississippian rocks of the central Appalachian basin. A formal stratigraphic framework is constructed that recognizes both highly-diachronous lithostratigraphic units and utilitarian, regional, and informal "chronostratigraphic" units. Depositional environments are determined through analysis of mapped lithofacies trends and geometries with reference to outcrop characteristics of lithologically and temporally-equivalent units. Usefulness of skills/knowledge acquired by participants and impact of participation on occupational statuses and personal lives of awards winners were also studied. This research investigated the effects of Willingness to Communicate on student learning. It was hypothesized that (i) students who were generally more willing to communicate would participate more in class than students who were generally unwilling to communicate and that (ii) Willingness to Communicate would be positively associated with both cognitive and affective learning. We have addressed the regulation of B lymphocyte formation by bone marrow stromal cells. Stromal cells appear to produce a regulatory factor which acts at the pre-B cell stage to induce the expression of immunoglobulin light chains and surface immunoglobulin. Bone marrow stromal cell conditioned medium was found to contain this factor and the active component was partially purified by HPLC. This stromal cell derived factor had a molecular weight between 16,000 and 20,000, was specifically neutralized by anti-IL-4 monoclonal antibody, 11B11, and enhanced the proliferation of anti-{dollar}\\mu{dollar} stimulated B cells. A Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED) study was performed for iron was epitaxially grown on three different faces of copper (Cu(110), Cu(110), Cu(111)). We were able to grow epitaxially up to 17 layers on Cu(110). A full dynamical analysis was performed using the renormalized forward scattering perturbation method for iron on Cu(100) and Cu(111). The layer doubling method was used for iron on Cu(110). A multiple relaxation approach was employed in analyzing the experimental data. The United Mine Workers of America Welfare and Retirement Fund was created in 1946, by the National Bituminous Coal Wage Agreement of that year. Kinetics of steam gasification of North Dakota lignite were studied in a unique high-temperature TGA in the temperature range 800-1200{dollar}\\sp\\circ{dollar}C at steam partial pressures 0.25 to 0.75 atm. A significant feature of this work is that chars were prepared "in-situ"; coal was devolatilized in steam and gasification of the char thus produced was allowed to proceed continuously without interruption. Evolution of microstructural properties and surface area with char conversion are studied at different temperatures using CO{dollar}\\sb2{dollar} adsorption techniques. X-Ray Absorption Study Of The Interaction Of Coal Combustion Gases With Calcium Oxide., Mohan Ramanathan

X-ray absorption measurements were performed on coal samples at beamline X18B at the National Synchrotron Light Source. The coal samples were probed at both the calcium and sulfur environments. Also in-situ measurements were made on the coal sample to study the evolution of sulfur on heating. The reaction of sulfur dioxide, evolved from the coal, with calcium oxide was studied in various environments. Both XANES and EXAFS techniques were employed at the calcium and sulfur K edges. Based on these measurements, it was observed that the traces of calcium present in the coal were in the form of calcite. The …

The study in this dissertation attempts to alleviate the problem of inefficient cutting and respirable dust production by continuous miners. It involves identification of the important parameters that affect coal fragmentation, design of an Automated Rotary Coal Cutting Simulator (ARCCS) and study of the effects of these parameters on coal fragmentation. Two sets of experiments were conducted, first, multiple bit experiments to establish the experimental procedures and study the microscopic fracture surface and second, single bit experiments to investigate the significance of the important parameters based on a statistical design called the two way factorial design.
