This study investigated the interrelationship of conation, goal accomplishment style, and psychological type in distance learners. The research questions for this study focused on the interrelationship of conation, goal accomplishment style, and psychological type in distance learners by measuring the conative capacity and psychological types of distance learners enrolled in satellite delivered courses. The study also investigated what influence, if any, do distance teachers have on the conative capacity of distance learners. Recent critics of Shakespeare's plays have acknowledged that the playwright's treatment of the lower classes is not as negative as once believed. Yet more critics claim the Shakespeare presented prostitutes and bawds, certainly among the lowest members of society, with callous indifference if not contempt. The plays that take up the issue of illicit sex reveal that Shakespeare's prostitutes and bawds are given the opportunity to speak about their problems from the stage. The purpose of this study was to determine if subjects' preferred modes of anger expression were related to their behavioral, cognitive, affective, and physiological responses to interpersonal conflict. Subjects identified as being anger-in or anger-out based on responses to the Spielberger Anger Expression Scales were asked to participate in two conflict oriented role plays, one in which they were instructed to express their anger and and the other in which they were asked to suppress their anger. Results showed that for all subjects anger expression was associated with increased frequency of negative verbal behaviors, greater experience of affect as determined …

Circulating fluidized bed technology has been widely employed in the energy conversion industry and drawn a considerable amount of research attention to itself. The world-wide research effort on the circulating fluidized bed partially comes from the new emission standards which impose very strict limitations on the coal-powered electrical industry. In the circulating fluidized bed riser, a dilute, upward core in the center region is surrounded by a dense, downward annulus. If older working people (age 55 and over) do not have the strength needed to adjust the safety equipment they use, the consequences can be fatal. Also, there may be deadly results if safety equipment is not used correctly because the tasks involved in adjusting it are perceived as inconvenient and unacceptable. The purpose of this descriptive pilot study was to evaluate two patterns of search in breast self-examination for the thoroughness of search they engender. An instrumented breast model was developed and piloted for this study. Eight LVDT's were embedded in a silicone breast model. Downward pressure on the breast model resulted in displacement measures which were converted to digital signals through the use of an M102 module. A command software program recorded these displacement measures in a series of files. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a goal setting, imagery, and a combined goal setting and imagery training program on the free-throw performance among female collegiate basketball players over the course of an entire season. A multiple-baseline, single-subject design was employed in which participants were randomly assigned to one of three interventions: (1) goal setting ({dollar}n=4{dollar}), (2) imagery ({dollar}n=4{dollar}), or (3) goal setting and imagery ({dollar}n=4{dollar}). This study examined sixteen basic writers in a college developmental English program to ascertain what effect collaborative learning strategies would have on the writing apprehension, writing anxiety, and writing quality. Students operated in a collaborative environment: They followed a writing process and arrived at consensus within their group at each stage of writing. All writers still worried about their writing, but they collectively agreed that they spent more time on writing and rewriting. This dissertation is a study of the modernization of health care and the professionalization of medicine in the Central Appalachian regions of Kentucky, West Virginia, and Virginia from the period of industrialization through the Great Depression. Unlike traditional histories of the medical profession, this dissertation highlights the role of non-medical agents, particularly women volunteers, in promoting the reification of modern standards of health care. Educated physicians flocked into the Appalachian heartland during the industrial boom of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Musculo-skeletal injury is a major occupational concern in the modern workforce. To date, the mechanisms responsible for muscle injury are not clearly understood. The objective of this research was to quantify the effect of dynamic parameters such as strain, strain-rate, number of repetitions, and loading cycles in muscle injury. A computer-controlled rodent dynamometer was designed and fabricated at WVU to facilitate the systematic investigation of eccentric-contraction induced muscle injury. A digraph D is called semicomplete if for each pair of distinct vertices u, v {dollar}\\in{dollar} V(D), either uv, vu or both are arcs in D. This structure is a generalization of the tournament which allows only uv or vu but not both to be in the arc set. In this paper we consider theorems concerning paths and cycles in tournaments and examine whether these theorems are also true for semicomplete digraphs. The history of lumbering in Florida stretches from the small water-powered sawmills operated in Spanish Florida to the paper and pulp mills of the modern state. However, nothing captures the imagination more than the heyday of Florida's lumbering boom, which lasted from 1830 until approximately 1930. During this period vast tracts of land were stripped of their valuable timber under the "cut and get out" system and for the most part, these clear cut lands were left idle and either sold for as little as one dollar per acre, or returned to the state via delinquent taxes. This study was designed to examine the effects of changing from teaching in an Associate Degree Nursing Program to teaching in a Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing Program upon role conflict and role ambiguity. Nurse administrators of 120 randomly selected NLN accredited baccalaureate programs were asked to identify faculty who changed from teaching in ADN to BSN education within the last three years, along faculty who had never taught in ADN programs. Thirty-nine administrators identified 314 nursing faculty meeting study criteria. The sample consisted of 100 career fire fighters and 100 volunteer fire fighters from a four state region. The instruments that were used in this study were the Vocational Preference Inventory (VPI), the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ), and a Demographic Information Form (DIF).
