Bone fracture is a major health problem in old population with its complications leading to mortality and morbidity. Therapies mostly involve preventing bone mass loss. Individuals with high bone mass, however, may still suffer fractures suggesting that additional components such as bone microstructure and composition may be responsible for increased fracture risk in the elderly. The relationship of bone constituents with bone fragility, however, is not well-understood. The purpose of this investigation was to examine one possible method of heat transfer enhancement. A free annular jet was oscillated and impinged on a flat plate to determine the effects of oscillation on the subsequent heat transfer. The nozzle through which the jet was emitted was an axisymmetric bistable fluidic oscillator but was oscillated through mechanical and pneumatic means for this investigation. The frequencies investigated ranged from steady flow to 25 Hz. The investigation used two methods, computational and experimental. The past several decades have witnessed an increasing concern with the role of communication in the instructional environment. The primary purpose of this research was to identify the specific teacher characteristics or behavior patterns which communicate caring to students and to identify those teacher characteristics or "misbehaviors" that disrupt the students' perceptions of caring. This investigation demonstrated that teacher immediacy and the teacher traits of socio-communicator style (e.g., assertiveness and responsiveness) and tolerance for disagreement have a significant, positive relationships with students' perceptions of teacher caring, learning outcomes, and the way students evaluate those teachers. Triplex DNA is a unique structure formed by the sequence specific interaction of triplex forming oligonucleotides (TFOs) with DNA, via hydrogen bonds, in its major groove. For this binding to occur base triplets like G(ON)-G:C(DNA), T(ON)-A:T(DNA), C+(ON)-G:C(DNA) must form, subsequent to the interaction of the TFOs with the DNA. TFOs directed to bind to the promoter or to the internal region of the oncogene, can prevent its transcription, and ultimately abolish oncoprotein production. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of knowledge of results (KR) compared to KR-with-goal-setting on selected tennis skills with three female collegiate tennis players over the course of a competitive season. A goal-setting program was designed using the goal attainment scaling procedure (Smith, 1988), where participants generated numerical targets for their chosen components. A multiple-baseline, single-subject design across behaviors replicated across participants was employed. Direct chill (D.C.) casting is one of the most important semi-continuous methods for the production of high strength aluminum alloys. The enormous unevenly cooling of ingots during the casting process can cause significant thermally induced stresses, which may result in solidification cracking. The control of the cracking during DC casting is a state-of-art technology, and many finite element models have been applied to simulate the solidification process during ingot casting. Efficient rock breakage is a result of optimum use of available resources in a continuous mining system. Research demonstrates that specific respirable dust must be kept at a minimum in order to produce the optimum parameters of rock breakage process. A cutting process that induces large chips of cut product results in minimum respirable dust. To produce larger chips of cut product, a correct inter-play of several bit geometry related parameters is essential. Guniea-pig inferior mesenteric ganglion (IMG) neurons that innervate artery or vein were separate neurons and there was no double labeling (Fluorogold and rhodamine beads) in the labeled neurons. The arterial neurons located in the central part of the IMG whereas venous neurons located peripherally. The cross-sectional area of total somata of arterial neurons was smaller than those of venous neurons which were smaller than unlabeled neurons. NPY-IR was found in 18% of arterial neurons, but not in venous neurons. All of the labeled vascular neurons fired tonically using whole cell patch-clamp recordings. This study aimed to determine if reading children books about people in nontraditional occupations would decrease occupational sex role stereotyping. The study also attempted to identify correlations between students’ occupational sex role stereotyping and the following demographic variables: age, gender, parents’ socioeconomic status, mother’s employment, and traditionality of mother’s employment. One hundred twelve kindergartners and first graders from two rural schools in West Virginia were administered a questionnaire, as a pretest, to determine the degree of which they stereotype 14 occupations according to sex. This tool reduces the time engineers spend designing optimum treatment schedules by proposing a solution based on virtual intelligence. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between gender of the teacher, faculty development, and class size of college mathematics teachers. The population for this study were 272 randomly selected institutions nationwide granting degrees in mathematics. A survey packet with a cover letter, a copy of the Teacher Efficacy Scale (Gibson & Dembo, 1984), and a questionnaire was mailed to the mathematics departments at each of the selected institutions. The recipient of the mailing was asked to either complete the enclosed instruments or forward the packet to a fellow full-time mathematics teacher. The return rate was 46%. …

The validation of the flow theory in an on-site whitewater setting is examined. A-priori hypotheses emphasized 3 concerns: (1) the relationship between a four channel model of flow and specific levels of flow indicators, (2) differences in the explanatory power of the four channel model and an original model of flow, and (3) the relationship between river difficulty and the frequencies of four channels (flow, anxiety, apathy, and boredom). This descriptive study was undertaken to determine if the use of performance fostered understanding of A Midsummer Night's Dream, engagement with Shakespeare's text, independence from the teacher, and a positive attitude toward the study of Shakespeare's plays among 39 ninth grade students. In a typical 90 minute period, students read scenes and participated in performance activities followed by discussion or written assignments for 15 days. The students were divided into acting companies to perform a final scene. Acting company meetings and performance activities were recorded. These are used to reduce automotive emissions, especially in heavy trucks and city bus fleets. Most of these vehicles use diesel fuel as their primary fuel. The specific aims of the present investigation were to determine the genotoxicity and potential carcinogenicity of WFC of Type I and Type III roofing asphalt by using different genetic endpoints in mammalian cells in vitro and in rat in vivo. Morphological transformation studies in cultured BALB/c-3T3 cells indicated that at concentrations that allow less than 50% survival, neither of the WFC, with or without the hamster liver S9 activation system, significantly increased foci formation in BALB/c-3T3 cells. The nature of semantic memory deficits in Alzheimer's disease (AD) has been subject to controversy. It is unclear whether semantic memory is impaired because of degradation of semantic knowledge or due to information processing deficits. This study compared 18 patients with AD to 18 control participants who did not differ significantly in age, education, or gender on three working memory tasks. Three variations of the Self Ordered Pointing Task (SOPT) which varied in the degree of ability to utilize semantic processing skills were administered. The purpose of this study was to explore the ways students experienced and interpreted academic activity within the culture of their daily lives on an undergraduate women's floor in a residence hall at a comprehensive four-year public university in the upper Southern region of the United States. Procedures for ethnographic inquiry, a qualitative research method, were followed to collect and analyze data by participant observation and interviews during the 1992-1993 academic year. It also provides some answers to the question: "Why do some nations choose to join war coalitions while other nations, in apparently similar circumstances, choose not to join?" At the systemic level of analysis, dependence on economic aid, membership in a formal alliance with a key participant, and proximity to the conflict are correlated with the level of participation in a war coalition. In the ewe, seasonal anestrus results from a change in the hypothalamic responsiveness to estradiol (E2) negative feedback. Various studies have demonstrated a role of hypothalamic dopaminergic cell groups in this seasonally dependent E2 effect. However, these neurons do not possess α-estrogen receptors (ER), therefore suggesting existence of another neural system mediating E2 inhibition. In the first study, we attempted to identify these E2-responsive neurons, by screening hypothalamic areas known to contain ER to determine if E2 induced Fos/FRAs expression in any ER-containing neurons. This study attempted to examine the constructs that are involved in the development of an adolescent Conduct Disorder. Specifically, the study explored the theoretical propositions of Alfred Adler which address the dynamic relationship between the development of one's self and the concurrent development of one's social interest in others. Not long after Germans began the historic task of dismantling the Berlin Wall in 1989, their country was again reunited after forty-five years of division. For the second time in less than a century, a majority of Europe’s Germans were brought together under the banner of a single political sovereignty. As the enlarged Federal Republic psychologically reorients and physically reconstructs itself, the event is likely to have continued European and worldwide implications.
