Statistical quality control measures, such as used by the West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH), require quantification of the variability of the test methods to set meaningful material acceptance parameters. The Division currently uses the Marshall method for asphalt concrete mix design and quality control. Although the Marshall method will be replaced as the Division transitions to the Superpave method, in the interim, the Division will continue to use the Marshall method. The study of rollover stability of partially filled tanker trucks often requires the use of mechanical pendulums to substitute the sloshing dynamics of the fluid. Cylindrical tanks have been effectively characterized by simple pendulums combined with some fixed masses. Just recently, a WVU team proposed the use of an elliptical pendulum to substitute the sloshing dynamics in partially filled elliptical tankers.;In this research, a trammel mechanism is configured as an elliptical pendulum with a unilaterally supported base. Effects of 1.0 mg/kg and 0.4 mg/kg intraperitoneal nicotine on hypothalamic and extra hypothalamic levels of corticotropin releasing factor (CRF) were examined in 104 rats. CRF, a 41-amino acid peptide involved in responses to stress, fear and anxiety, influences the same neurotransmitter systems as nicotine, a psychoactive component of tobacco. Radioimmunoassays revealed that in macro-dissected hypothalami, 15 minutes treatment with 1.0 mg/kg nicotine significantly increased CRF content compared to no treatment. The 1.0 mg/kg dose did not elicit effects in macro-dissected amygdala and brain stem. With 0.4 mg/kg nicotine, no significant effects were observed in micro-dissected hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus, amygdaloid …

The development of a prototype Decision Support System (DSS) for the condition assessment of the Armored Vehicle Launched Bridge (AVLB) has been demonstrated in the current work. AVLB is a mobile bridge that has been used by the US Army for tank and assault vehicle crossing. It is employed for spanning short gaps of 50 feet or less in the terrain. The condition assessment of such bridges, to ensure safety of personnel and tank, is of strategic importance. Heavy duty vehicle emissions represent a significant portion of the mobile source emissions inventory. Accurate estimation of their contribution is essential as on-highway and non-road heavy duty diesel emissions account for at least one third of the oxides of nitrogen (NOx) in the inventory. West Virginia University (WVU) has developed an extensive database of continuous transient gaseous emissions levels from a wide variety of heavy duty vehicles in field operation, from which a subset of vehicles (A to J) have been chosen for further analysis. These cost drivers are Resource-to-Department Cost Driver, Department-to-Function Cost Driver, Function-to-Activity Cost Drivers and Activity-to-Product Cost Driver. This study was undertaken in an effort to reconstruct the development history of the Gassaway dome in Braxton county, West Virginia. Several different analyses were performed to answer questions regarding the timing of the growth of the structure, and mechanisms responsible for the location and shape of the structure.;Interpretation of seismic line CNR-G1 reveals a fan-like distribution of faults (in cross-section), characteristic of strike-slip related positive flower structures. Structure and isopach maps constructed from several hundred wells throughout the study area help constrain the aerial extent of the Gassaway structure, defining it as a dome rather than an anticline. Three of the eight actin genes in the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus were used for a comparative analysis. The cytoplasmic actin genes CyI, CyIIb and CyIIa are linked in the genome and encode very similar proteins. However, their spatial and temporal expression patterns are differentially regulated. The region of CyIIa upstream of the ATG and putative transcription start site was subcloned and sequenced. Sites of protein-DNA interaction were identified using DNaseI footprinting. Comparisons of this data with that previously obtained for CyI and CyIIb showed that while CyI and CyIIb share an identical CArG (or serum response element) and extensive …

While the traditional methods of measuring income inequality reveals interesting and important features of labor markets, estimates of income inequality do not provide complete summary statistics of the distribution of well-being. Interpreting the Gini coefficient of family earnings as a measure of disparity in welfare implicitly assumes that households with the same level of before tax income are equally well-off. Utility is derived from the consumption of goods and services and there is ample empirical evidence which indicate that the distribution of total expenditure is likely to be different from the distribution of income. This research presents an empirical test of the effect of economic growth on productivity in manufacturing within the Pittsburgh region from 1850 to 1900. Theoretical research in economic geography refers to this as Verdoorn's 'law'. The underlying reason for this relationship is the positive impact of economic growth on technological development, which translates into changes in productivity. This study provides an empirical test of this relationship at a very different scale and time frame than previous studies, namely the counties within the Pittsburgh nodal economic region. A recent trend in bridge design has been toward elimination of joints and bearings in the bridge superstructure. These joints and bearings are expensive in both initial and maintenance costs, and can get filled with debris, freeze up and fail in their task to allow expansion and contraction of the superstructure. They are also a "weak link" that can allow deicing chemicals to seep down and corrode bearings and support components. Japanese university students who come to the United States present a particular challenge to universities to teach them about their risks to personal property. The usual method of delivering this message, a lecture during the orientation period, may not be the most effective way of presenting the information due to their limitations in understanding English. This study uses dynamical analysis to examine in a quantitative fashion the information coding mechanism in DNA sequences. This exceeds the simple dichotomy of either modeling the mechanism by comparing DNA sequence walks as Fractal Brownian Motion (fbm) processes. The 2-D mappings of the DNA sequences for this research are from Iterated Function System (IFS) (Also known as the "Chaos Game Representation" (CGR)) mappings of the DNA sequences. Heme serves as a cofactor of cytochromes and catalases. It is essential for energy generation and in defense against toxic hydrogen peroxide in nearly all cells including Salmonella typhimurium and Escherichia coli. Indirect evidence has suggested that heme synthesis is a regulated process. Little is known about how heme synthesis is regulated in enteric bacteria even though the heme synthetic pathway is genetically well-defined. This research represents the first report that heme synthetic regulation affects the first committed heme pathway enzyme, glutamyl-tRNA reductase (HemA), by an unusual mechanism.;HemA, encoded by hemA gene, catalyzes the rate-limiting step of heme biosynthesis. The discriminative properties of schedules of reinforcement have been assessed by making a choice response conditional upon some aspect of the schedule that produced the choice component. The discriminative properties of concurrent schedules of reinforcement and the effect of disruptions in the response-reinforcer relation were investigated using conditional-discrimination procedures. In the first experiment, choice components were produced by responding to one of two variable-interval (VI) schedules. Disruptions in the temporal contiguity between a VI response and a choice component were introduced by arranging a percentage of choice components according to a variable-time schedule. It has been felt that the intrinsic heart rate (IHR) is constant and that the observed heart rate is controlled by tonal alterations in the activity of the autonomic nervous system in response to various stimuli. Subjects were exposed to different concentrations of CFC-113 for variable duration while conducting 30-minute exercise regiments. End-exhaled breath samples were collected 25, 30 and 35 minutes after the exercise regiment and quantified using gas chromatography. Three comparative studies were conducted.;A short duration administration delivered at the beginning or at the end of the regiment was compared to a long duration administration delivered at the beginning or at the end of the exercise regiment. RpoS is an alternative sigma factor which is required for the expression of genes that help bacteria cope with environmental stress. The regulation of RpoS is multifactorial and occurs at the levels of synthesis and protein turnover. Our lab has previously identified a rpoS translation enhancing factor in Salmonella typhimurium, the RNA-binding protein HF-I. An antisense element consisting of rpoS mRNA secondary structure is predicted to sequester the rpoS ribosome binding site and inhibit translation. This study extends previous work investigating the generalizability of cardiovascular reactivity to stress obtained in response to laboratory-based tasks to cardiovascular reactivity measured in response to a natural occurring event. Cardiovascular reactivity (HR, SBP, DBP) to stress was measured with ambulatory monitoring equipment in 6 male and 16 female healthy Caucasian graduate students in two settings: during five standardized laboratory stressors, and during the proposal or defense of a thesis or dissertation. Results indicate that for all cardiovascular parameters, the magnitude of change was greatest in response to the natural event, and that among the laboratory tasks, the greatest degree …

The purpose of this study was to determine if there are significant differences in users' concerns related to the West Virginia Education Information System based on position, county size, length of use, and attendance at the WVEIS Data Conference. Using the Stages of Concern Questionnaire from the Concerns Based Adoption Model, 118 WVEIS users were surveyed first in June 1998. A post conference survey was mailed to the same population five months later with 80 responses being returned. Predictability of panic attacks has been identified as an important factor in the development, maintenance, and treatment of panic disorder. Although animal studies typically have found a preference for signaled (predictable) over unsignaled (unpredictable) aversive events, results with human participants have been less clear. Because preference for predictability has a wide range of clinical implications, we examined human preference for predictability in a biological challenge paradigm. Further, we examined the differential effects of predictability as a function of anxiety sensitivity and gender. This is an exploratory study that focuses on organizational effectiveness of gerontology centers and institutes at American universities. The study was modeled after studies of organizational effectiveness in higher education by Kim Cameron of Brigham Young University. The study identifies six domains of effectiveness that are important to gerontology centers and the structural and functional models and characteristics of gerontology centers that may predict the domain in which it is effective. This study examined the relationship between the perceived administrative support levels of special education directors and principals and the perceived intrinsic, extrinsic and overall job satisfaction levels of West Virginia special education teachers. The Supervisory Behavior Description Questionnaire (Form One) was used to measure the perceived administrative support levels. The Mohrman Cooke Mohrman Job Satisfaction Scale was used to measure the perceived intrinsic, extrinsic and overall job satisfaction levels.
