Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) have been the focus of many research groups because of their wide variety of uses in sensing and actuation applications. A fundamental barrier facing designers of next generation MEMS is the inability to access accurate, real-time microstructure positional information to determine if the device is performing as expected. Previously explored optical and electrical methods of MEMS device monitoring are often only suitable for research environments, or are unable to produce clear and meaningful characterization of device motion. Effect Of Sward Height And Concentrate Supplementation On Forage Dry Matter Intake, Digestibility And Grazing Time Of Spring-Calving Beef Cows, Ondieki J. Gekara

To establish the effect of sward height (SH) and concentrate supplementation on performance of grazing cattle, twenty-four cross bred Angus beef cow-calves were randomly assigned to two SH treatments (4--8 or 8--11 cm) with three supplement levels: 6.24, 3.12 or 0 kg/d. The study was conducted in three periods (P): May (P1), June/July (P2) and August (P3) in 1996. There was no SH x supplement level x period or SH x supplement level interaction (P > .10) on forage DMI, DMD or grazing time (GT). Cows on low SH had greater (P < .08) DMI and GT (P < .01) than cows on high SH. Forage DMI, DMD and GT decreased (P < .05) with supplementation. Grazing efficiency declined with supplementation and advancing grazing season (P < .01). Cows consumed more forage DM (P < .01) in P1 and P2 than P3. Forage DMI and grazing efficiency decreased with supplementation suggesting that supplemented cattle can optimally be grazed at SH < 8 cm.

The purpose of this study was to assess the perceptions of public high school teachers and students in Leflore County, Mississippi regarding agriculture and provide baseline data regarding the perception of high school students and teachers residing in an agriculturally dependent county with no agricultural education program. A population of 240 high school teachers and students was surveyed for their perceptions regarding agriculture. All three public high schools in Leflore County were represented in this study. Fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) composites are being used for reinforcement of wood, concrete, and steel. The objective of this study is to develop a qualification program to evaluate the service performance and fracture of composite/wood bonded interfaces. The proposed method is used for two types of FRP wood interface: FRP strips (plates) bonded to wood (used commercially for glulam timber beams) and wood cores wrapped with FRP by filament winding (being investigated for reinforced railroad wood crossties and utility wood poles). Pedigrees of ewes with Ringwomb were studied to determine the etiology, incidence and treatment of Ringwomb. Purebred Suffolk and crossbred Hampshire and Shropshire ewes aged from one to seven years were observed over a period of five lambing seasons. The study was conducted on 24 clinical cases of ringwomb occurring in one flock. Ringwomb or incomplete cervical dilation accounted for an incidence of 20.5% (24/117) of all ewes lambing. The ewes affected were all daughters, granddaughters, or great-granddaughters of one particular sire used on the farm as a service sire. A rational methodology is presented to predict the compressive strength of carbon/epoxy compression specimens and prototype production parts using the model presented by Barbero in the Journal of Composite Materials, Vol. 32, No.5/1998. The experimental technique is an adaptation of the optical method first proposed by Yurgartis (1987) and can be directly applied to actual development, quality control or failure investigation programs. There is very good agreement between actual and predicted compressive strength at -125F and room temperature. At 180F, the predicted strength is conservative. Uric acid has been hypothesized as one of the most important antioxidants in limiting the accumulation of advanced glycolated endproducts in broiler breeder hens. This study was designed to quantitatively manipulate the plasma uric acid concentrations using hemin and allopurinol and determine its effect on skin pentosidine, shear force value of Pectoralis major muscle, plasma glucose, body and breast weight, and chemiluminescence induced oxidative stress in broiler chickens. Allopurinol decreased plasma uric acid, ranging from 26% to 74%, with the most pronounced effect at wk 22. Hemin increased plasma uric acid concentrations between 11 and 14%. Geologic factors, such as bedrock lithology, joints, lineaments, and attitude of bedding were analyzed and evaluated for influences on mass-movement in the New River Gorge. Mass-movement deposits were mapped at a 1:24,000 scale in three study areas within the gorge and a Geographic Information System was developed to analyze the affects of local bedrock geology on the deposits.;Analysis of bedrock lithology revealed that the greater the percentage of quartz sandstone within the gorge, the more area is covered by mass-movement deposits. This study documents effects of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) on reproductive traits in a flock of Cobb X Cobb broiler breeder hens. The objective was to determine if the MHC affects reproduction of non-congenic broiler breeder hens. Genomic DNA was isolated from 35 hens. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis was performed on each sample, using a chicken class II MHC probe (Xu et al. 1989). Restriction endonuclease digestion using PvuII resulted in polymorphisms in all birds. Five polymorphic bands were identified. The largest bands, 7.5 kb and 5.4 kb, were present in one and four hens respectively. The …

This thesis describes algorithms for determining if a grid of switches can be turned into all-off state from any initial configuration by various methods of activation operation (push). Among these push methods, besides the regular "+" push, "+" push with no center, "X" push, "X" push with no center, and a "V"-typed unbalanced push are studied. The research methods used in this work are mainly linear algebra and algorithm analysis. Results obtained include that the grid m x n is completely solvable with push "+" no center, if and only if co-prime (m+1, n+1).

Influence Of Selection For Breast Muscle Mass On Ph And Metabolism Of Supracoracoideus Muscle From Male And Female Turkey, John Kenneth Yost

The objective of this study was to determine if selection for increased breast muscle mass has affected the supracoracoideus muscle's ability to regulate pH during physical activity in turkeys. The lightweight male line (LM) had the greatest breast muscle mass as a percent of body weight (p < 0.0001), a lower average pH (6.68; p < 0.0001), and greater Lactate Dehydrogenase (293 mmol NADH min-1mug-1 ; p < 0.0001) and Glyceraldehyde Phosphate Dehydrogenase (0.4452 mmol NADH min-1mug-1; p < 0.05) activities than the HM and FL lines. The LM line had the highest ratio (2.33:1) (p < 0.05) of adult to neonatal myosin. Hens had greater breast muscle mass as a percent of body weight than males (p < 0.0001), and a lower average pH (6.62; p < 0.05). This study showed that genetic selection for breast muscle mass resulted in an increased ratio of adult to neonatal myosin and an increased anaerobic capacity, which may predispose birds to a lower ultimate pH during physical activity.

The major focus of this study was to further investigate the area of sibling verbal aggression. In order to research this area, students at West Virginia University and their siblings were asked to complete a questionnaire about verbal aggression. The results showed that self-reports of verbal aggression were consistent with other reports. Results also showed that male same sexed siblings were more likely to display more verbal aggression than all other combinations. Results revealed that males self-reports of verbal aggression were higher than females. Results also indicated that males are reported by their siblings to be more verbally aggressive than …

In 1965, Congress created the Appalachian Regional Commission with the mission of providing economic development programs to increase development in the region. Male broilers were fed ad libitum a control diet and diets with 1.5% and 2.7% calcium propionate (CaP). Broiler diets were supplemented with CaP for the first 2,4,6, or 8-week intervals. After being fed CaP for the previous mentioned times the broilers received a control diet for the remainder of each period. All broilers supplemented with CaP had lower body weights (p > .01). Fat pad weight was lower in CaP treated broilers slaughtered at 8 weeks of age (p > .01). Percent carcass fat was lower in CaP treated birds (p > .01). The relationship between lipoxygenase activity (LOX) and superficial scald was studied in the four apple cultivars (Malus domesticus Borkh.), Granny Smith (GS), Red Delicious (RD), Golden Delicious (GD) and York (YK) to determine if LOX is the genetic source of superficial scald or a means of predicting % scalded fruit. Electrochemical remediation is an economic approach for long-term clean-up of metal-bearing aqueous wastes because it provides a means of continuous, selective removal of metal contaminants and offers terminal processes for recovery of the metals. In this study, three forms of novel carbon material were tested as electrodes for the removal of heavy metals and radionuclides from aqueous wastes by electrodeposition and/or electrosorption.;Copper and lead ions in aqueous solution were effectively removed by electrodeposition on two of the carbon electrodes. Fermenten is a commercially available by-product of lysine production recommended by the manufacturer (Biovance Technologies Inc., Omaha, NE) as a protein source for growing heifers and lactating cows. It has not been used in the diets of dry cows within 4 weeks of parturition. Three groups of 10 cows each, balanced for breed (Ayrshire and Holstein) and parity, were assigned to diets containing 0, 0.73 and 1.45 kg Fermenten dry matter/day. The reaction proceeded through an initial formation of (Z)-diene-allenes, which underwent facile eletrocyclizations to produce o-isotoluenes.;Treatment of allenyldicyclohexylborane with 1-lithio-5,5-pentamethylene-3,4-pentadien-1-yne produced the organoborate complex, which on further treatment with trimethyltin chloride furnished a (Z)-1,2,4,6,7-octapentaene (enediallene) derivative in situ. The subsequent electrocyclic reaction then generated the corresponding o-quinodimethane attached with a dicyclohexylboryl group and a trimethyltin group. The resulting o-quinodimethane then underwent a [1,5]-sigmatropic hydrogen shift, and on subsequent oxidative workup and protonation gave the 4-(1-cyclohexenyl)-3-methylphenol (51%). The …

The behavior of various types of anaphors may be classified into two types, local and long-distance anaphors. The English reflexive 'himself' and the Japanese reflexive 'zibun' representatively characterize the two types of anaphors. They contrast in that 'himself' is a local anaphor, whereas 'zibun' is a long-distance anaphor. Japanese has another reflexive pronoun, `zibun-zisin', and it behaves more similarly to himself. The standard binding theory (Chomsky (1981)) regulates the behavior of local anaphors; however, the behavior of long-distance anaphors cannot be explained. One proposal for this matter is to invoke parameterization, which defines a language-specific binding domain for anaphors. Within …
