This research focused on obtaining information on sand casting practices and providing participants in the research with feedback. It also focused on determining if any significant relationships existed among the data. A detailed questionnaire, containing 96 questions, was developed and sent to sand casters. Fifty sand casters participated in the benchmarking study during late 1995 and early 1996. The data were analyzed to provide the participants with a personalized evaluation indicating how they compared with other sand casters pouring the same primary type of metal. African Americans are an economically and socially oppressed group both currently and historically within the American South and Appalachian region. They experience socioeconomic barriers at local and national levels. Even so, within Appalachian counties, populations with greater percentages of African Americans receive greater per capita federal grant spending. Moreover, southern Appalachian counties including counties in the Black Belt region show the most dramatic increases in federal grants. Still, within Appalachian counties receiving increased federal grants, unemployment rates are not affected. Further, metropolitan counties are not benefitting from increased federal grant spending. Consequently, these counties are experiencing economic growth with little …

Political participation in the United States can take several distinct forms, reflecting numerous socioeconomic and demographic factors that determine patterns of civic engagement. Within West Virginia, the presence of a high proportion of aged citizens has led to interesting levels of involvement. Differing patterns of engagement between age groups can be explained with regard to the influence of life-cycle, generational and period (historical) effects. Analysis of survey data reveal that older individuals are more likely to participate in conventional political activities such as voting and letter writing to elected officials, but are less likely to participate in unconventional forms of …

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of time on dimensional changes of polysulfide impression materials over time. A stainless steel die fabricated according to the ADA, Standards Specification No.19 was used. Measurements were carried out at 15 minutes intervals up to 3 hours and at 6, 12, and 24 hours. Results, the mean, and the percentage dimensional changes were reported. All collected data was based on a repeated measure design. Split plot analysis of variance at P< 0.05 was used to calculate any statistically significant dimensional changes over time among the three impression materials. All three impression materials tested could produce replicas with clinically acceptable dimensional changes up to 24 hours after making the impression. However, after 3 hours, there were significantly greater dimensional changes approaching our standard of 40 µm acceptability. It is therefore recommended that polysulfide impression materials be poured within 3 hours of making the impression.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between trait anxiety and goal orientation in starting and non-starting college football players. One hundred and fifty-two volunteer male participants from Carnegie Mellon, Duquesne and Fairmont State took part in the study. The sample consisted of three National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) football divisions (i.e., IAA, II, III). All participants completed the Sport Anxiety Scale (SAS; Smith, Smoll, & Shultz, 1990), the Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire (TEOSQ; Duda & Nicholls, 1992), and a Demographic Questionnaire. Recent research in linguistics, and specifically within the field of applied linguistics, has been concerned with the different ways that speech acts are realized in different languages. This is so that language learners can learn to adequately conform to those norms in the target language. However, much of this research has assumed that all speakers of the relevant languages, such as American English, for example, are homogeneous, that they all perform the given speech acts in the same ways. As part of a larger study examining well-being among older West Virginia residents, male spousal caregivers (n = 30) and their non-caregiving counterparts (n = 99) were compared on self-reports of physical and psychological well-being, and appraisals of social support. Demographic trends suggest the importance of examining the caregiving situation among females, the traditional caregivers, and male caregivers who are growing in numbers. The data revealed few differences between caregivers and non-caregivers, chronological age was not a factor. This suggests that the male and female caregiving experience are not consistent. Self-reported physically violent females (Perpetrators and Mutually Violent) were compared with nonviolent females (Controls and Victims), on measures of borderline personality disorder, attachment, and psychopathology. Motivation for engaging in violence was investigated with Female Perpetrators and Mutually Violent groups. Results indicated that Mutually Violent females reported a significantly greater percentage of borderline characteristics. Major Mutually Violent individuals showed more borderline characteristics than the Nonviolent group. There were no significant differences within attachment styles. Female Perpetrators were significantly more hostile than the Nonviolent participants. To understand tissue participation in lysine oxidation, chicken lysine α-ketoglutarate reductase (LKR) activity and lysine oxidation (LOX) were measured in vitro. LKR activity was measured using a spectrophotometer and LOX was measured by collection of 14CO2 from [U-14C] L-lysine. LKR and LOX were measured in homogenates prepared from liver, kidney, pancreas, heart, brain, lungs, spleen, muscle, and intestine. LKR activities were 1000-fold LOX. LKR activity was highest in liver and intestine each approximately 63 µmoles/(hr*g tissue). Activity in other tissues was significantly greater than zero except for muscle. Muscle, liver, and intestine contributed about 70%, 15% and 6.5% respectively of …

The overall goal of this project was to investigate the feasibility of a new strategy to inhibit the NF-κB signal transduction pathway. Peptide P1 that resembled IκBα , the intracellular inhibitor’s kinase binding domain was designed to competitively inhibit IκBα’s degradation. Preliminary results in stably transfected cells indicated that P1 produced a two-fold inhibition in NF-κB dependent luciferase activity in Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulated RAW cell line, but not in BEAS-2B cell line. A transient transfection protocol was optimized in the BEAS-2B cell line and the effect of P1 was compared to SN50 a known inhibitor of NF-κB pathway. Our results …

A study was conducted to measure brake-specific mass emissions from heavy-duty diesel-fueled engines during their in-use, on-road operation. A Mobile Emissions Measurement System (MEMS) was designed and constructed to accomplish this task. A review of systems from the past 20 years was conducted to determine the limitations of similar systems, to outline the constraints of the MEMS design, and to provide the highest level of accuracy and ruggedness required to withstand the rigors of on-board, on-road testing. In this study, I examined aspects of fledgling and adult behavior at the nest site. Approximately 90% of the observations placed the fledgling bald eagles within the 456m secondary buffer zone. The fledglings centered their activity in the lowest disturbance levels possible. Fledglings were observed most frequently in the nest, on the ground, or perched in a pine tree. For 92% of the intensively observed individuals, 100% of the 50% core use area occurred within the primary buffer zone. Percent overlap of the 95% core use area with the secondary buffer zone was significantly different between suburban and rural fledglings …

Stalking has received a great deal of attention from the media and its harmful effects on victims have been well documented. Stalking is also more common than previously thought, leading researchers to classify stalkers into groups in an attempt to predict future behavior. Previous research has grouped stalkers based on theoretical models rather than trying to empirically examine stalking behaviors along with other factors such as motivation, type of relationship, and attachment style in determining a typology of stalkers. In handglass manufacturing, a need has been identified for a more efficient method to crack off glassware. Extended cutting and finishing times and high rates of breakage in the glassware hinder current methods. For example, due to the physical nature of thermal cracking, crack-off is not easily controlled and after separation is achieved, further finishing of the glassware is required. Depending on the glass properties and worker skill level, losses due to breakage can be as high as 80 percent in some product lines. The purpose of this study was to investigate and uncover evidence that supports the Elaboration Likelihood Model (Petty & Cacioppo, 1979, 1981, 1984; Petty Cacioppo & Goldman, 1981) and the Heuristic Systematic Model (Chaiken, 1980, 1982, 1987: Chaiken & Eagly, 1983). The participants for this study were 77 undergraduates at a large northeastern university. Recall was measured a 3 stage manipulation of argument strength. While not statistically significant the means of the three groups appeared to be different.

This work quantitatively characterizes the flow and mixing properties of aerated bulk fine powders between the minimum fluidization and minimum bubbling velocities (Umf < U < Umb). In order to accomplish this characterization, the viscosity of the emulsion phase was measured using the Maxwell’s model for the rheological behavior of complex bodies along with the set of rheological parameters proposed by Kono et al (1994). A unique property of the bulk fine powder called the relaxation time (t) was measured experimentally and this property was combined with another rheological parameter called the plastic deformation coefficient (Y) to give the viscosity of the emulsion phase as m = Yt. SECTION II This work describes the first homogeneous formation and decomposition of methane gas hydrates within several different synthetic sediments by using a highpressure batch reaction system. The pressure of the formation reaction was varied in the range of 6.8 – 13.6 MPa while the temperature was maintained constant at 273.5 K Decomposition of hydrate was accomplished through controlled depressurization starting at a pressure of 2.7 MPa, maintaining the temperature constant at 273.5 K. Overall reaction order, both for the formation and decomposition were also determined.

His music is a successful fusion of Eastern and Western musical language, and it has continued to receive critical acclaim. Many studies examining forest fragmentation effects on songbirds have been conducted in landscapes significantly altered by urbanization or agriculturalization rather than forested landscapes. There is some evidence that forest fragmentation due to timber harvesting has different effects on bird abundance than fragmentation from other land uses. This dissertation explores the trends in hiring part-time faculty in West Virginia colleges and universities. The restructuring paradigm places the utilization of part-time faculty within the context of changes in the culture of higher education. Questionnaires were sent to 163 administrators of West Virginia public and private 4-year institutions. Complete responses were received from 134 presidents, vice-presidents for academic affairs, provosts, deans, and in select circumstances, division chairs. There were no significant relationships between the administrator's attitude toward part-time faculty and the administrator's position, years in administration, or years teaching. The purpose of this study was to examine the process of the first year of implementation of Direct Instruction curricula as seen through the eyes of the educators implementing it. Part 1. Structure, stability, and mechanisms of oxidation and hydrolysis of a number of thiourea-S-oxides (thiourea dioxide; N-methylthiourea dioxide; N,N′-dimethylthiourea dioxide; thiourea and N,N′-dimethylthiourea trioxides; and sodium hydroxymethanesulfinate) have been investigated by means of UV-VIS, stopped-flow; X-ray crystallography; molecular calculations; ESR; NMR; and oxygen consumption studies. It was found that oxidation of thioureas does not always proceed through the generally accepted successive addition of oxygen atom to the sulfur center. Instead, thiourea dioxides appear to be the major end product in these oxidations. This study examined the effects of learning style, prior computer experience, and a 15-week, on-line development course on developers' attitudes and performance before, during, and after the instruction. The treatment, prior computer experience, and developers' learning style were used as the independent variables. Responses from the stages of concern instrument and final project performance scores were used as the dependent measures. Simple regressions and ANOVAs were used to determine whether any effects or relationships existed among the variables.
