Failure in materials occurs as a result of damage accumulation. Damage in composite material can be studied applying the continuum approach or the micromechanical approach. The continuum approach treats the composite material as transversely isotropic medium. In this approach, there is no distinction between the fiber and the matrix. The micromechanical approach studies the different damage mechanisms such as, fiber damage, fiber/matrix debonding, and matrix cracking. The research in this dissertation is focused on applying the micromechanical approach. Researchers have documented a high percentage of eating disordered individuals with a history of traumatic experiences such as childhood sexual abuse (Abramson & Lucido, 1991; Oppenheimer, Howells, Palmer, & Chaloner, 1985; Tice, Hall, Beresford, Quinones, & Hall, 1989). To what extent these adverse life events may contribute to the onset, maintenance, and severity of maladaptive eating behaviors is widely debated among researchers and clinicians. I investigated if variable levels of UV-B exposure during growth altered plant litter production and quality in ways that indirectly modified decomposition of litter material from ten species including three angiosperm trees, three forbs, three grasses, and one gymnosperm tree. For UV-B effects on litter production, I found that ambient UV-B levels (versus no UV-B) did not affect the aboveground biomass (litter production) of any of three grasses, one of three forbs, and the one angiosperm tree examined. However, it did alter the biomass of the two other forbs by stimulating production in one and reducing it in the other. …

The movement toward assistive technology (AT) and access to the general curriculum provided by the 1997 Amendments to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) has resulted in the need to study instructional methods that employ computer-based multimedia. Although the definition of AT includes interactive multimedia (Blackhurst, 1997), there has been little research on the use of multimedia to provide access to the general education curriculum. The present study examined the multiple domain predictor profiles of successful exercise behavior in a health resort population. Successful exercise behavior is operationally defined as maintaining, or changing from a sedentary or somewhat sedentary lifestyle to, an engagement in physical activity at least three times a week for at least twenty minutes each bout (ACSM, 1983). Demographic information, physiological variables, health status and risk factors were assessed at baseline from a sample of repeat guests from a southwestern health and fitness resort. This project was a pilot study examining the effects of a rural parent education program on parenting stress, perceived social support, parental locus of control, and parental efficacy. The sample consisted of a group of six mothers in West Virginia. The variables were tested using the Parenting Stress Index, Perceived Social Support from Friends Index and two subscales, Parental Efficacy and Belief in Fate and Chance, from the Parental Locus of Control Scale. Using Cronbach’s alpha, the Parental Efficacy Subscale and all but one subscale of the Parenting Stress Index were found to be reliable with this small sample. Analysis …

The objective of this study was to determine the profitability and risk-return characteristics of trout production in West Virginia. A combination of primary data (from a producer survey) and secondary data (from published sources and expert opinion) was used. Two sets of models (mixed-integer and quadratic-programming/portfolio) were estimated. Raceways and tanks were the two types of systems analyzed, for three different production capacities. The alternatives for the portfolio analysis included investment in a CD (to represent opportunity cost), food-fish production for sale to processors, and recreational or fee fishing. The expression of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) gene is stimulated by a high-carbohydrate diet and it is inhibited by the addition of polyunsaturated fat to the high-carbohydrate diet. G6PD expression is regulated by a posttranscriptional mechanism in the nucleus. In this regard, changes in the amount of G6PD mRNA in the cytoplasm are preceded by similar changes in the amount of nuclear precursor mRNA (pre-mRNA) in the absence of changes in transcriptional activity of the gene. Injured athletes' psychological distress has been explored using a stress-response paradigm and through a variety of research methodologies. Despite growing interest in psychophysiological stress-response research (Gatchel, 1997), physiological features of psychological distress have not yet been explored among injured athletes (Flint, 1998). Psychological distress has been associated with delayed healing among other medical populations (Kiecolt-Glaser, Page, Marucha, MacCallum, & Glaser, 1998), and physiological features of distress have lead to increased reports of a variety of health-related problems (Baum, Gatchel, & Krantz, 1997). The two primary functions of a jazz drummer are to maintain a consistent pulse and to support the soloists within the musical group. Throughout the twentieth century, jazz drummers have found creative ways to fulfill or challenge these roles. In the case of Bebop, for example, pioneers Kenny Clarke and Max Roach forged a new drumming style in the 1940's that was markedly more independent technically, as well as more lyrical in both time-keeping and soloing. The stylistic innovations of Clarke and Roach also helped foster a new attitude: the acceptance of drummers as thoughtful, sensitive musical artists. These developments …

As early as 1952, seven years before the publication of his most critically acclaimed work, Naked Lunch, William Burroughs began to express a dissatisfaction with traditional, essentially narrative, novelistic structures. Following the lead of many of his modernist predecessors, including Joyce, Eliot, Stein, and Dos Passos, Burroughs began to appropriate visually artistic compositional strategies for the construction of his increasingly experimental literary texts. The aim of this dissertation is to highlight Burroughs' various intersections with film, the non-literary art form that seems to have had the most profound and pervasive impact on his writing and general world-view. Thermolysis of 1,1′-(1,2-ethynediyl)bis[9-bis(4- tert-butyl)phenyl]ethenylidene-9H-fluorene (benzoenyne-allene) in 1,4-cyclohexadiene (1,4-CHD) at 75°C produced the cycloaromatized adduct 8,16-bis[bis(4-tert-butyl)phenyl]methyldiindeno[1,2,3- hi:1′,2′,3′ -qr]chrysene in 22% yield. The reaction presumably proceeds through a cascade sequence involving an initial Myers cyclization reaction to form a biradical having an α,3-didehydrotoluene moiety in its structure. The subsequent trapping of the aryl radical center in this initially formed biradical with the tetraarylallenic moiety intramolecularly affords a biradical having two stabilized triarylmethyl radical centers. A subsequent hydrogen-atom abstraction from 1,4-CHD, manifesting its radical character, then produces 8,16-bis[bis(4-tert-butyl)phenyl]methyldiindeno[1,2,3- hi:1′,2′,3′ -qr]chrysene. Similarly, thermolysis of 9-diarylethenylidene-1-phenylethynyl- 9H-fluorenes in 1,4-CHD furnished 1-diarylmethyl-2-phenylfluoranthenes in essentially quantitative yields. …

The present study examined the interaction of traditional and electronic contact methods with the stages of change model in a brief intervention. The sample consisted of a total of 220 high school (n = 106) and college athletes (n = 114), including 115 in the Electronic Group (E group) and 105 in the Traditional Group (T group). Overall, 14 teams participated in a sport psychology workshop including seven women's teams (n = 124) and seven men's teams (n = 96). The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effects on extracurricular participation (i.e., athletic participation) of academic achievement, self concept, and locus of control among high school students. Participants included six thousand six hundred ninety-eight (N = 6,698) high school students, from the National Education Longitudinal Study:1988 (NELS:88) First- and Second-Follow-Up data collection phases. These individuals participated in extracurricular activities during the tenth and/or twelfth grade. Although temperament is generally defined as an individual’s stable behavioral style, comparisons of temperament ratings derived from different sources typically yield only low to moderate correlations. The present study investigated three potential influences on toddler temperament ratings: the context of the observation, the raters’ amount of experience with the child, and rater characteristics. Thirty toddlers (14 to 36 months old) were included in the study. For each toddler, temperament ratings were provided by his/her mother, father, two day care teachers, a home observer, and a day care observer. This study examined the relationship between the leadership frames of nursing chairpersons and the organizational climate of nursing departments as perceived by the nursing faculty. Bolman and Deal's Leadership Orientations Instrument (Other), Borrevik's Organizational Climate Description Questionnaire-Higher Education (Partial), and a demographic questionnaire were sent to 605 nursing faculty members in 60 baccalaureate nursing programs in the American Association of Colleges of Nursing North Atlantic Region. The recent republication of the works of Anzia Yezierska and Rose Cohen, as well as the first ever publications of the autobiographies of Bella Spewack and Rachel Cohen, demonstrate the current interest in the autobiographical experiences of turn-of-the-century female immigrant writers. These women were not politicos of the Progressive Era, nor were they literary revolutionaries in the stricter sense of writing against a patriarchal literary environment. Instead, these women pay particular attention to how ethnicity was constructed for them by cultural attitudes existing outside the text. A predictor of cardiovascular disease is increased heart rate and blood pressure reactivity to physical tasks. One psychological factor that is associated with a reduced cardiac (i.e., heart rate) and vascular (blood pressure) reactivity has been social support. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the effects of social support on exercise-related CV reactivity. The purpose of this study was to establish a baseline of information about West Virginia child care center directors: their knowledge, skill and experience in early care and education, their training needs, what these directors perceive as important knowledge and skill to competently perform their job duties, and their opinions about the development of a director credential. The total population of 265 directors of licensed child care centers were surveyed. The replacement of the alkene moiety with an allene functionality in the intramolecular Pauson-Khand (P-K) cycloaddition provides a novel route to either α-alkylidene or 4-alkylidene cyclopentenones, depending on the substrate and reaction conditions. 1,3-Disubstituted allenes in the presence of molybdenum hexacarbonyl, DMSO, and toluene at 110°C give α-alkylidene cyclopentenones as a mixture of E and Z stereoisomers. The ratio of E and Z isomers is also dependent upon the substrate and the reaction conditions. 1,3-Disubstituted allenes are very useful precursors for the synthesis of complex chiral compounds with the allene serving as the stereocontrolling group. This study examined the extent of the relationship between the separate constructs of role conflict (RC) and role ambiguity (RA) with four dimensions of stress. Four experiments were conducted to assess some of the variables controlling resurgence. The basic procedure involved three conditions: (1) reinforcement of key pecking, (2) reinforcement of treadle pressing, (3) the resurgence condition. In Experiment 1, the resurgence condition was conventional extinction. The extent to which resurgence is replicable was assessed by repeating the three conditions within subjects. Resurgence was demonstrated to be a repeatable effect. In Experiment 2, the effects of reinforcement recency were examined by manipulating the number of sessions (5 versus 30) of Condition 2, and the resurgence condition consisted of conventional extinction. Suicide is a major health problem for adolescents. It is the sixth leading cause of death for five to 14 year-olds and the first and the third leading cause of death for adolescents 15 to 19 years of age. The purpose of this study was to extend the research on the risk factors of cognitively rigid behavior, impulsive behavior, and depression and to lay groundwork for the validation of cognitively rigid and impulsive personality traits of adolescent suicide attempters.
