The purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which the International 4-H Program achieved its objectives regarding positive cross-cultural attitudes, life leadership skills, and host culture knowledge through the six-month International 4-H Youth Exchange (IFYE) Program. The population consisted of the twenty-one 1999 IFYE six-month representatives. A descriptive census survey was used to collect the data for the study. Each participant completed pre- and post-exchange evaluations while attending the program orientation and debriefing at the National 4-H Center. Mathematics education has long been in need of improved methods of instruction, particularly in the area of problem-solving skills. This study compared three methods of training rules about laws of exponents and order of operations. All three training methods used the same mastery criterion for training each rule and included the same number of practice trials during review sessions that preceded each test. The difference between conditions involved what types of problems were presented during the reviews. Debris is present in all pipelines and has the potential to cause debris-induced lift-off in magnetic flux leakage inspection tools. A test apparatus was developed to qualitatively examine the effect of debris-induced lift-off.;The results of this research indicate that debris-induced lift-off has a detrimental effect on magnetic flux leakage data. This increases the potential of pipeline defects being either undersized or missed.;To reduce or eliminate the effects of debris-induced lift-off, the pipeline should be regularly cleaned. Commercial production of strawberry fruit during the off season offers greenhouse operators an alternative crop. Quality of such fruit may be influenced by production system. A series of studies evaluated various aspects of greenhouse production of strawberry fruit. In a study of commercially available strawberry seed rate of germination for cv. 'Sweetheart', was enhanced by cutting the seed coat. Total germinated after 20 days was equal for the cut, the 4x and 8x sand paper scarification treatments. For cv. Partially filled tankers undergoing turns or lane change maneuvers have a lower rollover threshold than any other type of vehicle. In order to study and simulate the lateral fluid sloshing effects in partially filled elliptical and cylindrical tankers a trammel pendulum has been utilized. The fundamental basis of selecting the appropriate pendulum parameters have been obtained by matching the pendulum dynamic effects with fluid sloshing dynamic effects obtained using Finite Element (FE) fluid models. This study reviewed and analyzed budget deficits incurred by county boards of education in West Virginia and determined why increasing numbers of county boards of education have experienced deficit spending since the enactment of Senate Bill 14.;This study utilized a descriptive research design. The West Virginia Department of Education provided deficit, enrollment, and personnel data; all fifty-five county superintendents and treasurers were surveyed to determine the frequency and cause of budget deficits. The purpose of this research was to examine the relationship between communication, trust, success (i.e., performance outcome), satisfaction, and longevity of competitive pairs and ice dancing teams. The participants were 102 ice dancers (N = 74) and pairs skaters (N = 28) ranging in age from 10-26 (M = 17.40) from training sites in Northeastern Canada and the United States. They represented all levels of competitive experience (Juvenile N = 6, Intermediate/Pre-novice N = 14, Novice N = 20, Junior N = 32, and Senior N = 30). During the period between the ascension of Tsar Alexander I and Tsar Nicholas II, the Jews of Russia and Russian officials were engaged in a curious partnership. Both parties were concerned with determining the precise definition of Jewishness and how this would change during the course of the nineteenth century. Russian officials, in the main, wanted to refashion the Jews of Russia into Russophiles imbued with Russian mores and education but, on no account, were these "new Jews" to be considered true Russians since God had made them a distinct group from their Slavic neighbors. This study examined levels of student satisfaction in business courses offered at Marshall University through an interactive television delivery system to determine whether the delivery method influenced student satisfaction. Based on Clow's (1999) contention that remote-site students might bias their answers to specialized survey instruments that assess student attitudes in ITV classes, standardized student course evaluations completed at the end of the semester at traditional classroom based sites, host ITV sites and remote sites were used to measure student satisfaction. We placed leaf packs containing different proportions of sugar maple and red oak leaves into a headwater stream before and after a winter spate to determine the effects of leaf species and flood disturbance on leaf pack processing and macroivertebrate colonization patterns. We also collected natural leaf packs from three streams to examine how leaf pack quality influences macroinvertebrate colonization. Red oak leaves processed faster in association with maple leaves. Invertebrate densities were higher on leaf packs containing more fast-processing leaves. This thesis analyses current spatial trends in the U.S. prison system, with a focus on the process of prison privatization. This study reviews the literature on trends in the US prison system, and maps the spatial distribution of public prisons, private prisons, and the trend to prison privatization. In addition, a case study of prison privatization in Texas is conducted. U.S. penal policy makers explain the need for privately run correctional facilities as a response to the “crisis” of the prison system, in particular the impact of overcrowding. Petersburg, Virginia presents a unique opportunity to examine the lives of southern artisan workers in the nineteenth century. Ranked as the forty-ninth most industrialized U.S. city in 1860, Petersburg was home to nearly 3,000 skilled white and free black male workers in the antebellum era. Crossed by five railroads, commerce and industry were the backbone of the city's economy. The tobacco factories, iron foundries, cotton textile mills, and smaller workshops attracted skilled workers from Virginia, other parts of the South, northern states, and even Europe. The present studies examined the interactive relation between dispositional traits and contextual situations. They also tested a theoretical model that illustrates how dispositions and situations may interact to determine behavior. The first study was designed to identify personality traits “relevant” to specific situations. The second was designed to test the theoretical model. For the first study, participants read vignettes describing certain situations and a person described in the vignette as behaving in certain ways to the situations. The main purpose of this study was to examine the effect of providing allergen-control bedding encasings on encasing utilization for children with asthma and dust mite allergy. Twenty parents of such children were assigned to an intervention group, which received dust mite proof covers upon recruitment, or a control group, which did not. Two to three months after recruitment, parent report and observational measures were obtained during a home visit. The intervention group used the encasings, but not other dust mite control strategies, significantly more than the control group, based on parent report, not observation. Use of dust mite proof …

Characteristics of peer collaborators (gender) and the collaborative context (friendship, friendship quality, same-gender peer) may affect task processes and performance. Forty six same-gender adolescent dyads (26 girl dyads, 20 boy dyads; mean age = 15.69 yrs) collaborated on a problem-solving task that involved planning a route around a hypothetical town to obtain various items. Goals for and perceptions of collaboration were assessed as an index of collaborative processes. Performance was assessed through route length, time to complete the task, total cost, and errors on the task. The purpose of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial effect of calcium hydroxide paste and calcium hydroxide containing gutta percha ìPlusî points. Confocal scanning microscopy created a more sensitive model for assessing endodontic antimicrobial activity. The model consisted of anterior teeth with canals prepared to a #60 K Flex file. Target organisms (A) Enterococcus faecalis or a combination of (A) Enterococcus faecalis and (B) Bacteroides fragilis were inoculated into the prepared site. Model checking is a software verification and validation technique whereby an abstracted model of a system is created and properties of the system are checked over that model. Paradoxical interventions are therapeutic techniques in which the therapist appears to promote the worsening or continuation of the problem rather than its removal. The objective of this treatment is to lessen or eliminate the problematic behavior through the unusual means of encouraging it. Only two previous studies have empirically evaluated these techniques with resistant and defiant youths; those results suggested that paradoxical interventions may be effective with severely conduct-disordered adolescents. The purpose of this dissertation was to evaluate the difference between two methods for presenting training stimuli, Single- and Multi-trials procedures. The former presents one stimulus in a single workspace and the latter presents many stimuli. Experiment 1 attempted to explain why Multi-trial methods sustain higher rates of responding than Single-trials. The results showed that the primary reason for the high rates of responding to Multi-trials is the presence of multiple stimuli, which allow subjects to read ahead to a consecutive stimulus while responding to a previous one. Despite a deluge of national attention to equity issues, public school administration is still the domain of men. Research attention to women in leadership has done little to close the gender gap in superintendents' and secondary school principals' offices, perhaps because of its focus on successful men rather than on the women who hold these positions. Qualitative interviews examine seven central Appalachian women school leaders in light of feminist standpoint theory, focusing on the way the women enter leadership, articulate a personal construction of the leadership role, and negotiate the borders between their own constructions and the prevailing ones. This dissertation seeks to describe the effects of Germany's recent unification upon the officers and NCOs of the former East German armed forces, the Nationalvolksarmee, and their counterparts in the Federal Republic's Bundeswehr. Specifically, the study attempts to demonstrate that the absorption of East German officers and NCOs occurred without introducing any element of unreliability to the Bundeswehr. Furthermore, the study seeks to demonstrate that the Bundeswehr was able to complete this portion of unification without compromising its standing either as a pillar of a democratic regime or as a bulwark of European security. Various studies have found differences in the socialization experiences of adults with clinical levels of social anxiety, particularly direct and indirect parental influences. This study has expanded the research literature in two ways. First, the unique contribution of several parenting factors to social anxiety was evaluated. Although anxiety-related responding and skill deficits have historically been associated with performance-based problems such as high mathematics anxiety, the relative contributions of these variables to substandard performance remains poorly understood. Utilizing a 7% carbon dioxide gas mixture to induce fear, the present study was designed to determine the impact of fear-related responding to cognitive task performance. Glacial margins mapped in Slippery Rock Creek basin during the 1950s are problematic. The number of sedimentological, mineralogical, petrological, and textural analyses used to distinguish glacial drifts in the southern portion of the basin were inadequate to resolve the margins. Furthermore, misidentification of man-made deposits as glacial drift led to erroneous interpretations regarding the extent and character of pre-Wisconsin glacial deposits, and appears to have influenced subsequent soil mapping. Canadian Shield erratic weathering was the primary tool used in this study to re-investigate the glacial margins. The purpose of this study was to examine subordinates’ perceptions of superiors’ humor orientation, assertiveness, responsiveness, avoidance strategies, approach strategies, and overall superior satisfaction. Participants were individuals over thirty that work at least 30 hours a week. 158 participants completed surveys. Results of the study show that humor orientation was positively and significantly correlated with responsiveness. Likewise, humor orientation was positively and significantly correlated with superior satisfaction. Humor orientation was also positively and significantly correlated with approach strategies. However, humor orientation was negatively associated with avoidance strategies. Furthermore, a post hoc analysis revealed that females perceived their supervisors as being …

This study examined the organizational personality types of "upward mobile," "ambivalent," and "indifferent" with reference to their relationships with worker sociocommunicative orientation, communication apprehension, immediacy, and job satisfaction. The study examined self-report data from the measures of organizational personality scales, job satisfaction, communication apprehension, immediacy, and assertiveness/responsiveness. The study found that each of the three personality variables have unique relationships (some linear, some non-linear) with communication apprehension, immediacy, assertiveness, responsiveness, and job satisfaction.
