Genomic Differences And Parentage In West Virginia's Reintroduced Elk (Cervus Canadensis), Adam A.V. Cook
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Elk (Cervus canadensis) reintroductions have been common in the 20th and 21st centuries, yet 40% have failed to establish self-sustaining elk populations due to a lack of post-reintroduction demographic monitoring. Elk were reintroduced to West Virginia in 2016 following more than a century of absence after the species was extirpated in 1875. Elk were translocated to West Virginia from Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area (LBL) in eastern Kentucky and from Arizona. The two groups of elk differ in their subspecies, physiology, reintroduction history, connectivity, and habitat. Reintroductions create genetic risks such as the founder effect and …
Mechanisms Of Neurovascular Dysfunction In Chronic Ischemic Stroke: Insights From Sex And Aging, Briana L. Clary
Mechanisms Of Neurovascular Dysfunction In Chronic Ischemic Stroke: Insights From Sex And Aging, Briana L. Clary
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Ischemic stroke is the leading cause of long-term disability world-wide. These disabilities can include both cognitive impairment and sensorimotor deficits. Due to the prevalence of post-stroke functional deficits, it is imperative to identify novel therapeutic targets and develop new treatments. These cognitive deficits are a result of damage to the neurovascular unit (NVU), a term used to describe the relationship between the cerebral vasculature and other cell types within the brain. Cognitive impairment as a result of damage to the NVU is referred to as vascular contributions to cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID), and it is estimated that between 25-30% …

Xanthine Oxidoreductase, Uric Acid, And Iron Homeostasis: Discovering A Therapeutic Vulnerability In Breast Cancer, Matthew G. Chapa
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Breast cancer remains the most frequently diagnosed malignancy and the leading cause of cancer related deaths in women. This is primarily due to distant metastases, which highlight the necessity to understand factors that contribute to breast cancer progression. Emerging evidence associates decreased tumor xanthine oxidoreductase (XOR) expression with a poorer prognosis, increased recurrence, and a more aggressive phenotype. While healthy liver, intestines, kidneys, and breast tissue have robust XOR expression and activity, there is a tendency for this to be ablated in carcinogenesis. This dissertation investigates XOR's role in breast cancer and identifies its product, uric acid (UA), as possessing …

What Does It All Mean? Differences In Self-Defining Memories Between Community And Adjudicated Youth, Hannah Elias
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Identity development is driven in large part by self-defining memories, or memories though which we base our definition of who we are (Habermas & Bluck, 2000). In adolescence, cognitive skills are gained that allow us to make meaning, or learn lessons and gain insight, from self-defining memories (Bluck & Habermas, 2001; McLean & Thorne, 2003). To determine whether there are differences in their ability to make meaning from their self-defining memories, this study compares narratives of self-defining memories between community youth and adjudicated youth. Additionally, the ability to be specific in self-defining memory recollection may differ between these groups, which …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Despite how simple walking may seem, the locomotor control system is structurally and functionally complex. Its hierarchical organization of supraspinal and spinal networks with forward and feedback pathways has many interactions at multiple levels that are dependent on the dynamics of a high-dimensional musculoskeletal system. Having a comprehensive understanding of sensorimotor integration within a healthy locomotor control system is crucial for understanding changes to the system due to age or neurologic disease and developing effective technologies to recover mobility in those populations. In this dissertation, we address persistent gaps in knowledge pertaining to how the nervous system controls locomotion.
