The purpose of this study was to determine if subjects' preferred modes of anger expression were related to their behavioral, cognitive, affective, and physiological responses to interpersonal conflict. Subjects identified as being anger-in or anger-out based on responses to the Spielberger Anger Expression Scales were asked to participate in two conflict oriented role plays, one in which they were instructed to express their anger and and the other in which they were asked to suppress their anger. Results showed that for all subjects anger expression was associated with increased frequency of negative verbal behaviors, greater experience of affect as determined …

Musculo-skeletal injury is a major occupational concern in the modern workforce. To date, the mechanisms responsible for muscle injury are not clearly understood. The objective of this research was to quantify the effect of dynamic parameters such as strain, strain-rate, number of repetitions, and loading cycles in muscle injury. A computer-controlled rodent dynamometer was designed and fabricated at WVU to facilitate the systematic investigation of eccentric-contraction induced muscle injury. The purpose of this study was to investigate career and volunteer fire fighters using the vocational concepts of John Holland. The sample consisted of 100 career fire fighters and 100 volunteer fire fighters from a four state region. The instruments that were used in this study were the Vocational Preference Inventory (VPI), the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ), and a Demographic Information Form (DIF). The current practice of alcohol treatment in many agencies implies the distinction between addiction treatment and mental health treatment. This study attempted to investigate how the psychologists and addiction counselors might possess different philosophies and treatment approaches. Impelled by research deficits identified by previous researchers, the relation between marital conflict and child adjustment was investigated within a repertoire-based paradigm to yield a more complete understanding of the etiology and maintenance of child adjustment problems. Specific parental and child affective, cognitive, and motoric conflict repertoires were obtained via an analogue task, and were related to 10 to 13 year olds' internalizing and externalizing problems. The correspondence between parental and child conflict repertoires was examined, as were the relations between intra-individual affective, cognitive, and motoric conflict responses. I examined the potential contribution of environmental seasonality to the maintenance of diversity within plant populations by asking: Is demography of a natural population season-specific? The following investigation examined a biological system employing bacterially-derived 2-ketogluconate (2KG) for the dissolution of insoluble soil phosphates. It has been suggested that 2KG solubilizes insoluble soil phosphates by either a reduction in soil pH or by chelating divalent cations. The capability of 2KG derived from Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 to solubilize phosphate ores and the mechanism by which this dissolution occurs were investigated in vitro and in vivo. The dissolution of all three ores was shown to be dose-dependent, non-linear, and not correlated with a significant reduction in pH of the solution. The dissolution of IP and RP resulted in …

Nitrogen mineralization and nitrate leaching were investigated in an acid mine soil reclaimed with sewage sludge (SS) and coal combustion residues (CCR). In the field experiments mine soil was amended with three rates of SS (0, 1200, and 2400 kg N ha{dollar}\\sp{lcub}-1{rcub}){dollar} and two types of CCR, i.e. fly ash (FA) and fluidized bed waste (FBW) applied at rates equivalent to once and twice the lime requirement of the soil. The study compared cognitive group therapy to life review group therapy with older adults who reside in a personal care facility. The study sought to find if there were differences in treatment gains between the two therapies based on subjects' level of depression (as noted on the Beck Depression Inventory) and life satisfaction (as cited on the Salamon-Conte Life Satisfaction in the Elderly Scale). This study was designed to examine the relationship between the self-perceived psychological types of male and female community college deans of instruction and their self-perceived leadership styles. The population consisted of 881 male (N = 667) and female (N = 204) community college deans of instruction identified by mailing labels from the American Association of Community and Junior Colleges who were serving in public institutions in the United States listed in the AACJC Membership Directory 1992. The eriophyid mite Phyllocoptes fructiphilus is the vector of rose rosette disease (RRD). The mite occurs naturally on several wild roses and on multiflora rose. P. rosarum is a related eriophyid mite found on multiflora and other rose plants. A successful mass rearing program was developed and a rearing arena designed to allow observation of individual mites. Biological studies were conducted of both mites including life history, sex ratio, hibernation site, effect of temperature on egg laying and rate of development, and host range. This study examined the effects of two cooperative learning methods on the achievement, computer anxiety, and classroom environmental preferences (whole class, small cooperative groups, or individualized) of college-level students in two microcomputer applications classes. One group received instruction using the Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) method (n = 26), while the other group was taught using the Jigsaw method (n = 27); both groups were taught for one semester (15-weeks) by the same instructor. Experimental results are reported on the biological atmospheric oxidation of FeS{dollar}\\sb2{dollar} embedded within mine rocks in the presence of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. Three different potentially acid-producing rock samples from different coal seams are used. The rate of FeS{dollar}\\sb2{dollar} conversion or production of acid is studied with respect to sterility and variations in temperature, and particle size. Pore size distributions as well as changes in porosity with conversion have been determined for both inoculated and sterilized samples. It is found, under the same experimental conditions, that the inoculated samples produce five times more acid than the sterilized ones. This is attributed to …

Two aspects of acid mine drainage (AMD) production were studied on a laboratory scale: the role of leaching, and the effectiveness of phosphate amelioration. The leaching study was based on an assumption of an earlier oxidation/leaching field model: that oxidation is independent of leaching. A SAS program was written which can simultaneously fit all three parameters of this field model. The model was generalized to include the effect of initial sulfate sulfur. A deterministic oxidation/leaching model was developed and applied to two continuous, unsaturated flow trickle bed reactors. The Ca supply for eggshell formation depends on the rate of calcium transport in both the intestine and shell gland. Although estrogen (E{dollar}\\sb2){dollar} is known to play an important role in the regulation of Ca transport in these tissues, the mechanism responsible for this effect has not been elucidated. Study 1, 2, and 3 were thus conducted to determine the role of E{dollar}\\sb2{dollar} in the regulation of Ca-ATPase and alkaline phosphatase (AP) in both the shell gland and intestine of immature chicks. Stromal cells are key components of the hemopoietic microenvironment of the bone marrow and are now known to function as primary regulators of hemopoietic cell production. This study addresses the role of stromal cells in B lymphocyte production. Initial experiments have established that B lymphocyte development is dependent on the presence of a heterogeneous mixture of stromal cells. In addition, recent studies in this and other laboratories have shown that exposure of stromal cells to cytokines alters their production of hemopoietic growth factors and, as a result, their hemopoietic regulatory function. Investigations of treatment compliance among pediatric cancer patients have indicated that noncompliance to treatment is a significant problem in this population. Some researchers have suggested that compliance to treatment may be significantly influenced by the complexity of the treatment regimen. The cytogenetic effect of various genotoxic compounds was analysed in cytokinesis-blocked human peripheral lymphocytes and V 79 cells by using immunofluorescence and micronucleus methods. Cytochalasin-B (CYB) induced a maximum number of binucleated cells at 3-4 {dollar}\\mu{dollar}g/ml without any genotoxic effect.
