This study uses the Product Development Cycle developed by W. James Popham and Eva L. Baker as a systems approach to Computer-Aided-Instruction development. This process establishes seven stages (Formulation, Item Specification, Item Tryout, Product Development, Product Tryout, Product Revision, and Operations Analysis) and rules that are to be followed at each stage. Formative and summative evaluation are incorporated to improve the product's development. Instructional design is integrated into this process by using Component Display Theory developed by M. Nightwood is a novel of life lived in the interstices of time and space by marginal characters, epitomized by the night people of Vienna, Paris, and Berlin. These epicenters of the cultural revolutions of the early twentieth century drew expatriates from all over the world. Cytokinins are an integral part of plant growth and development, involved in many physiological processes and found in several forms. This investigation sought to follow the uptake of the cytokinin, {dollar}\\sp{lcub}14{rcub}{dollar}C-8N{dollar}\\sp6{dollar}-benzyladenine (BAP), by lettuce seeds through time, trace the movement of the metabolites through several areas of the seedling, and identify the BAP metabolites. Lettuce seeds (Lactuca sativa L. cv. Grand Rapids) were exposed to a two hour pulse of the radioactive BAP. These seeds were harvested at 4 hour intervals from 2-48 hours. Many aspects of female black bear reproductive biology and early development of cubs have remained poorly documented, particularly for wild populations. Black bears were studied from 1974 through 1989, in northeastern Pennsylvania, to establish base line data for times of breeding and parturition, gestation length, characteristics of cubs at birth, cub growth and development, and cub sex ratios. Reproductive performance of females was also documented, including minimum breeding age, interbirth interval, reproductive efficiency, and litter size. Breeding activity ranged from 18 May to 12 September but peaked from mid-June through mid-July, based on 47 females captured while in estrus and …

In an effort to better understand the patterns of life stress sources, stress reactions, and perceptions of control over life situations of college student-athletes, a battery of three self-report instruments were administered to 400 male and female student-athletes at a medium size, land grant university. Responses from 263 individuals on the Campus Stress Questionnaire, Levenson's locus of control questionnaire, and the Sport Competition Anxiety Test, indicated that the student-athletes perceived they experienced significantly greater amounts of overall life stress, cognitive stress symptoms, and less sport competition anxiety than the norm. This study was conducted to evaluate the lifting capabilities of individuals while wearing protective clothing in a hot environment and to investigate the behavior of the physiological stresses induced by the lifting process associated with those variables. This work reports on three projects undertaken with the aim of learning more about complex behavior such as multiple steady states in a CSTR and traveling waves and spatial structures in unstirred solutions. Bistability in the permanganate-oxalate system was studied spectrophotometrically and computationally using a CSTR in a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Absorbance of the solution was monitored as a function of flow rate. The concentrations of several manganese containing species in each of the steady states at a specific flow rate were determined using multi-component analysis. The primary objective of this study was to determine the impact of Creative Problem-solving (CPS) training on students' creative thinking and finished art products. Experimental and Control groups were matched by age (13-14) and grade (eighth). The creativity training program used in the study was a total of sixteen sessions of 55 minutes each. The vehicle for the study was CPS which was conducted by the writer who encouraged fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration. In his three operas of the early 1880s--Patience, Iolanthe, and Princess Ida--W. S. Gilbert directs his wit at free-thinking women. Although the overt subjects of these operas (Aestheticism, the reform of the House of Lords, and women's education) have received much critical attention, the subplot--the conflict between men and women--has not. In all three, the tension in the plot is the result of the sexual struggle; and, in all three, Gilbert trivializes the feminist idea of woman's independence and advocates the Separate Spheres theory, which postulated that equality between the sexes was not possible because of the God-ordained biological difference …

My dissertation concentrates on comparing the forecasting performance of three types of multivariate models: a structural model, a transfer function model in time domain, and two vector autoregressive models (VAR). These models are specified and estimated to reflect the market behavior of important variables in the U.S. copper market. The forecasting performance of these models is compared in the context of a commodity modeling exercise. A solvent partition technique of microencapsulation, utilizing an apparatus designed to provide a continuous injection of a drug-polymer preparation into a flowing mineral oil system, has been developed via the preparation of hydrocortisone-polylactic acid microcapsules. Using this method, microcapsules of controlled particle size distribution and drug loading were prepared with good reproducibility. Dissolution studies further showed that microcapsules having the same drug loading and particle size distribution exhibited the same rate of release. There is a paucity of evidence to support the hypothesis that there is no significant difference (NSD) between the rate of acclimatization gain and loss of young and old men as they work in a hot environment. Ten young men (Group 1 (x age 24.8 years)) and 5 older men (Group 2 (x age 64.4 years)) volunteered to complete a 39 day exercise regimen in an environmental chamber. This study investigated the teaching strategies used by untrained tutors and inquired if these strategies changed with the experience of tutoring, the task being taught, and the specific learner being taught. In addition, individual difference variables of tutors and learners were examined to determine their relationship to tutor teaching strategies. The widow appears frequently on the Restoration comic stage, and yet, almost without exception, she provokes laughter only at her own expense. In the thirty-eight comedies examined in this study, widows suffer various types of abuse, from witty derision to physical assault. However, in virtually every instance--whether in her treatment by fellow characters or in her depiction by the playwright--the widow's exploitation involves her financial situation. Moreover, this common factor is a key to understanding why widowhood, essentially tragic, became comic during the Restoration. A technique was developed for the determination of total arsenic (As) in soil using differential pulse polarography. Soil samples were digested with a combination of HNO(,3) and H(,2)SO(,4). Total As was determined in M HCl after reduction of As(V) to As(III) with hydrazine sulfate. Soil and fly ash standards were analyzed by this method and agreement within one standard deviation between replicates was obtained. Approximately 99% recovery of As was obtained from spiked soil samples. Differential pulse polarography is also quite useful for the rapid determination of arsenite in solution during studies of As sorption - desorption by soils. A …

The purpose of this study was to ascertain what adolescents who become stepchildren between the ages of 13 and 18 believe to be the stressful and non-stressful aspects of stepfamily living. This study also attempted to determine if the level of stress for adolescent stepchildren does diminish over time when comparing subjects living in a stepfamily less than two years, two to three years, three to four years, and four to six years. Therapy is frequently sought by moderately depressed college students. The present work was conducted to determine the influence of methods of preparation of corncob acid-resistant hemicellulose on its chemical composition and rat growth stimulation. ARH preparations involved either treatment with cation resin, solubilization of crude ARH and reprecipitation in ethanol, treatment of the hydrolysate with carbon or recovery of the non-dialyzable portion of corncob hydrolysate. All ARH preparations significantly improved growth and feed utilization of rats when fed at the 0.05% level of the diet. The reduction of the phenolic content of the ARH preparation did not influence rat growth. The carbohydrate components of the ARH preparation were similar …

Prototheca Isolation Medium (PIM) was proven to be effective in selectively isolating Prototheca, even from heavily contaminated natural sources. Measurements of the autospores of 125 isolates of Prototheca indicated that there might exist two sub-genera, one with small autospores and one with large autospores. The addition of one percent sodium acetate to PIM resulted in a medium that inhibited the growth of isolates of the small spored sub-genus while allowing isolates of the large spored sub-genus to grow normally. A survey of various environmental habitats showed that Prototheca was common in aquatic habitats such as streams and sewage. The largest …

he Herbarium at West Virginia University has accumulated a collection of approximately ten thousand packets of mosses collected from West Virginia over a period of eighty years. Several taxonomic papers have been published about this group of plants, but none consolidates all the information concerning the classification and distribution of these mosses. Specimens dating back to 1891 were examined and checked, and nomenclatural changes were made. Field trips were conducted, and more specimens were collected.
