The Role Of Endophyte -Infected Grasses As Biologically Mediated Control Strategies For Plant -Parasitic Nematode Suppression In West Virginia Orchards., James Robert Hendricks Jan 2002

The Role Of Endophyte -Infected Grasses As Biologically Mediated Control Strategies For Plant -Parasitic Nematode Suppression In West Virginia Orchards., James Robert Hendricks

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) cover crops, when infected with the endophytic fungus Neotyphodium coenophialum, have been reported to reduce plant-parasitic nematode populations in some cases but not others. During a 2-year study endophyte-infected Kentucky-31 was compared with endophyte-free Star Grazer under greenhouse and field conditions. The endophyte-mediated suppressive effect was evaluated on four plant-parasitic nematode genera, nematophagous fungi and predacious nematodes. Sprinkle plate and most probable number assays were utilized to evaluate the population dynamics of nematophagous fungi across treatment groups. N. coenophialum infection was periodically evaluated using a Tissue Print Immunoblot Assay. Significant suppression of Pratylenchus crenatus (P < 0.05) by endophyte-infected F. arundinacea was observed 240 days after planting (DAP) in a greenhouse study. Significant suppression of Pratylenchus crenatus (P < 0.05) was observed, at 80, 1,632, 2,934 and 3,713-degree days after planting (DDAP) in microplot experiment 1 (MP1) and at 3,744 DDAP in microplot experiment 2 (MP2). Significantly fewer (P < 0.05) P. crenatus were extracted from Malus domesticus roots under Kentucky-31 cover in comparison to Star Grazer in MP1 but differences were not significant in MP2. Suppression was observed during both field trials, but the suppressive effect of endophyte-infected tall fescue cover varied with time of stand establishment. Populations of Mesocriconema xenoplax, Xiphinema americanum, Paratylenchus projectus, predacious nematodes and nematophagous fungi did not vary significantly (P ≥ 0.05) as a consequence of endophyte-infected F. arundinacea cover. Shoot/root tissue extract and leachate exposure, comparing Kentucky-31 against Star Grazer, immobilized Pratylenchus spp. in some case but not others. Direct exposure to N-formyl loline produced no effect on Pratylenchus spp. or X. americanum survival. Species-specific feeding responses to endophyte-infected and endophyte-free F. arundinacea produced no significant (P > 0.05) …

An Evaluation Of Double-Observer Point Count Techniques And Avian Habitat Use On The Camp Dawson Collective Training Area, Preston County, West Virginia., Greg Michael Forcey Jan 2002

An Evaluation Of Double-Observer Point Count Techniques And Avian Habitat Use On The Camp Dawson Collective Training Area, Preston County, West Virginia., Greg Michael Forcey

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Double-observer point counts are a new method of inventorying avian fauna that allow detection probabilities to be calculated for each point or species of bird. These detection rates allow estimation of abundances that are more robust than estimates derived from single-observer counts because detection probabilities factor in birds present but not detected. The combined double-observer (DO) technique involves two observers recording data together on a single data sheet. The primary observer dictates the number of each species that is detected while the secondary observer records this information; the secondary observer also notes birds that the primary observer did not detect. …

A New Approach For Training And Testing Artificial Neural Networks For Permeability Prediction., Ademola Akinwumi Oyerokun Jan 2002

A New Approach For Training And Testing Artificial Neural Networks For Permeability Prediction., Ademola Akinwumi Oyerokun

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Although many attempts have been made in the recent years for permeability prediction using Artificial Neural Network (ANN), none of the approaches has employed prespecified test set instead of a randomly generated test set. The methodology for selecting proper pre-specified test set was presented in chapter four of this report. The pre-specified test sets were chosen from a plot of log of permeability versus density. This approach was explicitly discussed later in the report. In this study, a pre-specified test set approach for training the network for field applicability has been developed using inputs from electric logs and flow unit …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

There are two classifications of femoral implants ñ cemented and cementless. The object of this study was to assess the effect of bone viscoelasticity on cemented and cementless implant stability. A cemented implant design was evaluated via a 3-D FE model. The results showed a small 1.41% increase in stem subsidence with inclusion of bone viscoelasticity. This is explained by the low stresses at the cement-bone interface. A 2-D FE model was utilized to evaluate the effects of coefficient of friction, press-fit and bone viscoelasticity on stem fixation. The push-out load increased with µ for each value of δ, but …

Islands on the Ohio River contain valuable habitats that are unique and irreplaceable on a national or ecoregion basis. Aquatic habitats connected with the islands and their back channels (areas where commercial traffic is prohibited) provide quality habitats for bottomland hardwood wildlife; however, quantitative data on the importance of these areas are lacking. The objectives of this study were to: 1) compare breeding bird abundance and quality of habitat for cavity-nesting birds between back channel and navigational channel sides of islands, and 2) analyze the effects of nest box placement on cavity-nesting bird-use on the Ohio River Islands National Wildlife …

Understanding Retroviral Replication: Roles Of Nucleocapsid And Rnase H During Reverse Transcription In Vivo., Wen-Hui Zhang Jan 2002

Understanding Retroviral Replication: Roles Of Nucleocapsid And Rnase H During Reverse Transcription In Vivo., Wen-Hui Zhang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Retroviruses exhibit high genetic variability, which is generated by mutations and recombination during viral replication. This can lead to rapid emergence of viral variants resistant to antiretroviral drugs. A better understanding of retroviral replication may lead to the development of improved antiviral drug therapy and effective vaccines to retrovirus-related diseases. The fact that retroviral nucleocapsid protein (NC) is multifunctional and plays crucial roles in viral replication makes it a good target for antiviral drug development. By studying how NC affects reverse transcriptase (RT) template switching, the in vivo role of NC during reverse transcription can be explored. Using a sensitive …

Part 1: Structure, Stability And Reactivity Of Small Biologically-Active Organosulfur Compounds. Part 2: Generation Of Reactive Oxygen Species In The Enzymatic Reduction Of Chromium(Vi) And Arsenic(V) And Its Implications In Metal-Induced Carcinogenesis., Oluwarotimi Odunayo Olojo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Structure, stability, kinetics and mechanisms of oxidation of some important organosulfur compounds (2-aminoethanethiolsulfuric acid, 4-methyl-3-thiosemicarbazide and thionicotinamide) have been investigated by using UV-VIS, NMR, stopped-flow, and qualitative analysis. Results obtained showed that oxidation occurs mainly at the reactive sulfur center of the molecules via successive addition of oxygen atoms. The oxidation of thionicotinamide, an important xenobiotic, gave different oxygenated products, depending on the oxidizing power of the oxidant used. The sulfinic acid of thionicotinamide is stable with mild oxidizing agents while stronger oxidants desulfurize the molecule to yield sulfate as observed with other organosulfur compounds studied. Mechanism of oxidation leading …

Metal-Induced Generation Of Reactive Oxygen Species And Related Cellular Injury., Stephen Sunday Leonard

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Metals have been indicated in causing generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and cellular injury. The overall objective of the present study was to investigate ROS generation from metals and the related effects on biological systems. The results obtained from the present studies have demonstrated that: (a) Cobalt is capable of generating ·OH via a Co(I)-mediated Fenton-like reaction. (b) The ·OH radical is generated by reaction of H2O2 with Cr(V), which is produced by enzymatic one-electron reduction of Cr(VI). H2O2 is produced by reduction of molecular oxygen via O2·− as an intermediate. The ·OH radicals generated by these reactions are …

Land Use, Environmental Quality And Public Policy: Interactions And Implications For Agricultural Sustainability., Ramkumar Bendapudi Jan 2002

Land Use, Environmental Quality And Public Policy: Interactions And Implications For Agricultural Sustainability., Ramkumar Bendapudi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Population growth, combined with economic growth have been primary causes of urban sprawl and increased pressure on natural resources. Urban development often adversely affects land, water and air quality. Although not considered a threat to the nation's food production, land development and urbanization are critical issues because they can lead to fragmentation of agricultural and forest lands, loss of prime farmland, wildlife habitat and other resources, additional infrastructure costs for communities and regional authorities, and competition for water. These losses raise concerns about sustainability of land and agriculture. Various state-sponsored programs such as Purchase of Developmental Rights and Transfer of …

Sowing Barren Ground: Constructions Of Motherhood, The Body, And Subjectivity In American Women's Writing, 1928-1948., Virginia Blanton Broaddus

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This project considers the demands American women confront about their societal roles, particularly cultural discourses that urge women to become biological mothers. These discourses become especially compelling during eras when women transgress ideological boundaries, leaving the constructed domestic space and taking places in the public sphere. I analyze responses to these discourses as they are manifested in literature written between 1928 and 1948 as well as in the late twentieth century. My analysis, informed by cultural studies and feminist theory, depends upon my use of intersubjectivity theory, particularly as articulated by Jessica Benjamin. I discuss the role of the body …

The implications of the results for suicide assessment and prevention in older adults, and future …

The Potential Of Soil Survey Data In A Quantitative Evaluation Of Surficial Geology Mapping In Northern Maine., Rosalia Evans Jan 2002

The Potential Of Soil Survey Data In A Quantitative Evaluation Of Surficial Geology Mapping In Northern Maine., Rosalia Evans

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The soil-surficial geology relationships along the St. John River in northern Maine suggest that surficial geology is the most important factor controlling soil-profile genesis. Therefore, the information available on soil survey maps is predictive of the surficial geology of those areas. The agreement between a derivative surficial geology map created from soil survey data and maps created by conventional geological mapping differs little from the agreement between conventional geological maps. Soil survey maps can be used to make general assumptions about surficial geology patterns in northern New England and adjacent Canadian Provinces. Sitespecific applications using soil survey maps to determine …

The Big Three As Related To Receiver Apprehension And Listening Behaviors., Jamie Lynn Hayhurst Jan 2002

The Big Three As Related To Receiver Apprehension And Listening Behaviors., Jamie Lynn Hayhurst

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The current study examined receiver and listening behaviors from a communibiological point of view. Communibiology proposes that particular communication variables are predictable by individual inborn processes. These inborn processes make up our individual temperament. Therefore, the apprehension variables were measured to determine if they were predicted by temperament. Individual temperament was measured using Eysenck’s Big Three measurement of extroversion, neuroticism, and psychoticism. The dependent variables were then regressed to determine if they were predictable by all three temperament variables and/or by one of individual variables. College undergraduates (N = 325) voluntarily participated in the study. Results indicate mixed support for …
