Sensitivity Of State Aid Allocation To Measures Of Needs And Resources In Local Governments, Adam Dale Baus
Sensitivity Of State Aid Allocation To Measures Of Needs And Resources In Local Governments, Adam Dale Baus
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This analysis examines the sensitivity of state intergovernmental aid, per capita, to measures of resources, infrastructure, social services, social problems and demographics in Northern and Southern local governments in 1982 and 1992. Time-periods chosen are based on the potential for domestic policies born through new federalism to harm local governments through lesser amounts of available state aid. North and South are compared to account for possible regional differences. Regardless of region and time however, redistribution efforts to local governments with higher levels of need and lower levels of resources are not particularly good. Redistribution tendencies present in 1982 declined by …

Perceptions Of Moral Agency Among Some Preschool Special Needs Teachers, Stephen Keith Pavlovic
Perceptions Of Moral Agency Among Some Preschool Special Needs Teachers, Stephen Keith Pavlovic
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
For more than 30 years, research on moral development has been dominated by the work of Lawrence Kohlberg and James Rest who have sought to construct and validate a universal model of moral development. The administration of either the Moral Judgment Inventory (MJI) or the Defining Issues Test (DIT) has been the primary, and frequently the only, methodology used to examine the moral reasoning abilities of various professions. Based on these tests, teachers have shown a disturbingly low level of moral reasoning. Using Rest's Four Component Model of moral deliberation, the study was designed to test the hypothesis that teachers' …

Parameter Identification Of Induction Motor Using A Genetic Algorithm, Edina Bajrektarevic
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
High performance variable-speed machines incorporate a model for the system in either the controller or state estimation stages. The accuracy and general robustness of the machine is dependant on this model. Therefore, it must accurately represent both the electrical and electromagnetic interactions within the machine and associated mechanical systems. Recently, some new technologies have been tested in the field of electromechanics like neural networks, fuzzy logic, simulated annealing and genetic algorithms. These methods are increasingly being utilized in solving electric machine problems.;In this thesis, a genetic algorithm (GA)---a form of artificial intelligence---is employed to identify the electric parameters of induction …

Microbial Ecology Of Freshly Sawn Yellow-Poplar Lumber ( Liriodendron Tulipifera L.) In Two Seasons, Mark Ryan Mikluscak
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Each year, the forest products industry sustains considerable product loss due to a reduction in market value of lumber brought about by microbial discoloration. The current practice of treating green lumber with chemical biocides to protect it from discoloration, although successful, is a potential hazard to both the environment and human life. One potential alternative to chemical biocides is biological control. The most recent success in the field of biological control has been achieved in the agricultural industry by first studying the microbial ecology of the substrate in which the biologically based preservative is to be used. Literature on microbial …

Geology, Surface Hydrology, And Fish Habitat Relationships In The Upper Shavers Fork Drainage Basin, West Virginia, Ryan Cooley Gaujot
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Shavers Fork is the mainstem stream of a unique upper elevation watershed located in the Appalachian Plateaus province of West Virginia. Surficial "facies" mapping of in-stream and floodplain-adjacent landforms helped to classify small-scale flow patterns into heterogeneous and homogeneous channel units. Channel-unit bankfull width, channel-unit length, channel-unit area, and channel-unit depth all increase in the downstream direction. Riffles constitute 32 percent of the total channel unit area, riffle-run complexes and glides make up 26 percent each, bluff-pool complexes constitute 7 percent, riffle-glide complexes 6 percent, and true pools make up only 2 percent. Upper reaches contain the most in-stream and …

Spatial And Predictive Foraging Models For Gray Bats In Northwest Georgia And A Comparison Of Two Acoustical Bat Survey Techniques, Joshua Begg Johnson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The federally endangered gray bat (Myotis grisescens) is an obligate, year-round, cavedwelling species. Efforts to protect caves occupied by gray bats have proved beneficial to recovery. Specific gray bat foraging area characteristics also are critical to gray bat population recovery and maintenance. In summer 2000 and 2001, I determined gray bat presence/absence with Anabat II acoustic bat detectors in potential foraging areas near 2 bachelor colonies in northwest Georgia. In 2000, I systematically sampled 213 locations near water sources over an 8.3 x 9.4 km sampling grid that was established over a 5,100 km2 study area. Each sampling point was …
Nest-Site Resources For Cavity-Nesting Birds In The Southern Allegheny Mountain Forests Of West Virginia, Harry A. Kahler
Nest-Site Resources For Cavity-Nesting Birds In The Southern Allegheny Mountain Forests Of West Virginia, Harry A. Kahler
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Cavity-nesting birds may be negatively impacted by a lack of proper nesting sites. Southern Allegheny Mountain forests of West Virginia are unique due to the juxtaposition and diversity of forest cover types. Management must focus on monitoring wildlife population levels as well as habitat requirements within each cover type. Cavity tree abundance significantly differed among central hardwood (x¯ = 16.4; SE = 5.3), northern hardwood (x¯ =12.7; SE = 6.8), and boreal forest cover types (x¯ = 7.2; SE = 3.6) ( P < 0.0001). Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) and American beech (Fagus grandifolia) were most likely to have tree cavities, yet beech may be influenced by increased mortality from recent outbreaks of beech bark disease initiated by the beech scale insect (Cryptacoccus fagisuga). Nesting bird community density, richness, and abundance do not differ among mature forests of the 3 cover types. Cavity-nesting species dependent on available tree holes were found most in the central hardwoods (P = 0.009). Forest managers should consider landscape level effects, as well as forest stand composition, when recommending silvicultural treatments.

Redback salamander (Plethodon cinereus), red-spotted newt (Notophthalmus v. viridescens ), eastern American toad (Bufo a. americanus), and wood frog (Rana sylvatica) were most common in pitfall arrays; mountain dusky salamander (Desmognathus ochrophaeus), Appalachian seal salamander (Desmognathus m. monticola), and redback salamander were …
Combined Effects Of Water Chemistry, Canopy Cover, And Stream Size On Benthic Macroinvertebrates Along A Central Appalachian Stream Continuum, Jesse Adam Bopp
Combined Effects Of Water Chemistry, Canopy Cover, And Stream Size On Benthic Macroinvertebrates Along A Central Appalachian Stream Continuum, Jesse Adam Bopp
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
I sampled benthic macroinvertebrates along a 25.2 km stream continuum in the Central Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia from May---October 2000. Six components of macroinvertebrate community structure and function were measured: density, biomass, richness, community taxa similarity, feeding group composition, and metric composition. I quantified these components to determine if localized variation in alkalinity and canopy cover would modify stream continuum predictions. Localized variation in alkalinity and canopy cover significantly affected macroinvertebrate structure and function and modified stream continuum predictions. Results indicated that alkalinity was the primary determinant of macroinvertebrate structure and function, and that the effects of canopy cover …
Investigation Of Frictional Resistance On Orthodontic Brackets When Subjected To Variable Moments, Edward Mah
Investigation Of Frictional Resistance On Orthodontic Brackets When Subjected To Variable Moments, Edward Mah
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Friction and binding occur in orthodontics during sliding mechanics. This paper evaluated the influence of a variable moment, simulating mastication, placed at the bracket-archwire interface to determine its effects on friction. Friction of self-ligating brackets were also compared to stainless steel and ceramic brackets. Six archwires were combined with four brackets. Friction (static, kinetic and dynamic) and load (dynamic and apparent stiffness) were measured. Dynamic friction was the frictional force that occurred when the applied force was variable (dynamic load). The results showed that static and kinetic friction were similar while dynamic friction was statistically greater. The Minitwin and Transcend …

Overwintering Abundance And Distribution Of Striped Bass (Morone Saxtilis) In The Hudson River Estuary Using Hydroacoustic Techniques, Brian William Nagy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Using a modification of standard techniques, a target strength to length relationship was developed for white perch (Morone americana) and striped bass (Morone saxtilis). This target strength to length relationship was compared to two standard relationships (Love and Foote). The calculated relationship was not found to be significantly different from Love's equation, but was different from Foote's equation. This calculated relationship was applied to hydroacoustic data collected on the Hudson River in December of 1995 and 1997. The goal of the hydroacoustic data collection was to assess the abundance and distribution of overwintering Hudson River striped bass. Results from this …

Modulation Of Thiols And Pulmonary Immune Responses Due To Diesel Exhaust Particle (Dep) Exposure, Nabil Hussain Al-Humadi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Environmental exposure to diesel exhaust particles (DEP) has been of concern because of its potential contribution to the increased prevalence of acute and chronic airway diseases. The objective of this study was to investigate the role of thiol changes (due to DEP exposure) in immune responses. Rats were exposed to OVA, DEP, or both by intratracheal instillation (IT) and/or inhalation. IT-DEP exposure significantly increased the inflammatory parameters and thiol levels in both Sprague-Dawley and Brown Norway rats. Exposure to DEP and/or OVA resulted in significant increases in neutrophils, LDH, total protein, and albumin content in lavage fluid. Alveolar macrophage (AM) …
Preparation Of Benzoenyne -Allenes, Enyne -Isocyanates And Enyne -Carbodiimides And Their Applications In The Synthesis Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons And Heterocycles, Hongbin Li
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The thionyl chloride-induced cascade cyclization of enediynyl propargylic alcohols provides an efficient synthetic route to 11H-benzo[ b]fluoren-11-ols and related compounds. The simplicity of the synthetic sequence and the mildness of the reaction condition make this pathway especially attractive. Interestingly, in certain cases the intramolecular [2+2] cycloaddition reaction of the chlorinated benzoenyne-allene intermediates occurred preferentially to form 1H-cyclobut[a]indenes. Competition from the intramolecular [2+2] cycloaddition reaction could be avoided with the non-chlorinated benzoenyne-allenes, providing direct access to novel polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Several indeno-fused 4,5-diarylphenanrenes were synthesized by a consecutive C2-C6 cyclization of a symmetrical benzoenyne-allene. The formal Diels-Alder reaction involving a C2-C6 …

Role Of Protein Kinase C Isoforms In Human Breast Tumor Cell Survival, Meredith Ann Mccracken
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Protein kinase C (PKC) is a family of serine/threonine kinases composed of 12 unique isoforms that function in a variety of cellular processes including proliferation, apoptosis, differentiation and carcinogenesis. The contribution of individual PKC isoforms to these processes is largely unexplored. The purpose of this study is to identify specific PKC isoforms that promote breast tumor cell survival following radiation treatment. This work demonstrated that depletion of PKC delta and PKC zeta isoforms from MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 human breast tumor cells by antisense oligonucleotides significantly impaired survival following radiation insult. Antisense oligonucleotides were shown to be effective and selective inhibitors …
Antitumor Activity Of Antimalarials In Human Breast Cancer Cells, Qun Zhou
Antitumor Activity Of Antimalarials In Human Breast Cancer Cells, Qun Zhou
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Previously we showed that quinidine arrested MCF-7 cells in G1 phase of the cell cycle and led to a G1 to G0 transition followed by apoptotic cell death (Wang et al., 1998). The present experiments demonstrate that MCF-7, MCF-7ras, T47D, MDA-MB-231, and MDA-MB-435 cells transiently differentiate before undergoing apoptosis in response to quinidine. The cells accumulated lipid droplets and the cytokeratin 18 cytoskeleton was reorganized. Hyperacetylated histone H4 appeared within 2 h of the addition of quinidine to the medium, and levels were maximal by 24 h. Quinidine treated MCF-7 cells showed elevated p21/WAF1, hypophosphorylation and suppression of retinoblastoma protein, …
Nucleation And Coagulation Of Particulate Matter Inside A Turbulent Exhaust Plume Of A Diesel Vehicle, Donghee Kim
Nucleation And Coagulation Of Particulate Matter Inside A Turbulent Exhaust Plume Of A Diesel Vehicle, Donghee Kim
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The objective of this study is to develop a physical model to accurately predict the nucleation, coagulation, and dynamics of particulate matter emission from diesel-fueled engines. The uniqueness of this research is that measured particulate matter (PM) size distribution data is not required a priori to solve the nucleation/coagulation equations; instead the PM concentration is predicted based on the fuel sulfur content, fuel to air ratio, exhaust flow rate, and the ambient conditions. This study presents the CFD modeling of an exhaust plume dispersed from a stack pipe of a tractor truck powered by a 330 HP diesel engine. This …

The Significance Of Metallothionein Isoform 3 Gene Expression In Human Prostate Cancer., Rana Dutta
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Since the expression of the brain specific metallothionein isoform, MT-3, was shown to be expressed in many, but not all prostate cancers, this gene was transfected into the commonly utilized prostate tumor cell line, PC-3, to study the consequence of MT-3 expression on growth rate and resistance to chemotherapeutic agents. PC-3 cells were stably transfected with MT-3 or MT-1E under control of the constitutive CMV promoter. The levels of MT-3 protein for the 5 overexpressing clones had an average level of 8.3 ng MT-3 per μg protein as assessed by quantitative immunodot blot analysis, and three were picked for further …
Women's Roles In Fairy Tales: A Comparison Of The Portrayal Of Women In "Marienkind" Of The Brothers Grimm And Benedikte Naubert's "Ottilie"., Astrid Munder
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Gender roles have always been and will always be, explicitly or implicitly, a topic of literature. The different ways in which gender roles are depicted in the literature of a given period reflect the political and societal state of affairs of that period. Literary works must therefore be critically analyzed to understand them in the context of their times. German fairy tales provide important examples of this. In this thesis I will examine the literary genre of the fairy tales in order to illustrate how differently female and male authors approached the topic of the woman’s role. To do so, …
Micro-And Pulsed-Plasmas: Fine Tuning Plasma Energies For Chemical Analysis., Matthew Alan Moser
Micro-And Pulsed-Plasmas: Fine Tuning Plasma Energies For Chemical Analysis., Matthew Alan Moser
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
During the past decade, true chemical speciation has become increasingly important for environmental, clinical and nutritional chemists. Chemical speciation, by definition, is the identification of elements and their chemical environment in a given sample. The current and most popular trend for chemical speciation is to utilize hyphenated techniques, thus yielding two-dimensional information. Often, chromatography or an alternate separation technique is used to separate the mixture into its constituent components. Then, each component is interrogated by some spectroscopic technique. In nearly all cases, the nature of the compounds are inferred from their relative chromatographic properties, and the identification of elements and …

The Effect Of Training Infant Joint Visual Attention On Novel Word Learning., Melissa S. Atkins
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Joint visual attention is the ability to follow another person's line of vision. This ability develops toward the end of the human infant's first year, but can be trained as early as 8 months of age. Many studies have correlated infant joint visual attention abilities with language development, but there has been no experimental manipulation to determine whether there is a causal relation between joint visual attention and word learning. In the present study, 41 infants between 7.5 and 8.5 months of age were assigned to either the treatment or control group. The treatment group received a joint attention training …
Why National Missile Defense: A Test Of Three Competing Models., Christopher Lee Campbell
Why National Missile Defense: A Test Of Three Competing Models., Christopher Lee Campbell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation seeks to answer the question of why the United States is pursuing the deployment of a national missile defense (NMD) system at the present time. The explanation most often given by national security policy makers is that it is being constructed in response to the weapons programs of “rogue states.†States such as North Korea, Iran, and Iraq are seen as actively developing weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and the capability to deliver these weapons to the U.S. mainland. However, the proposal of this system poses problems. First, it has made many U.S. allies fear that its foreign …
