Children and adolescents within the child welfare system are at risk for developing significant mental health problems, due in large part to the chaotic environments in which they live. In many cases, these youth are removed from their family of origin and placed in out-of-home or “foster” care. Many times these children and adolescents endured repeated placements and transitions, which make them vulnerable to problems in the future, particularly by engaging in risky behaviors that may increase the likelihood that they return to the system as parents themselves. Synthetic pyrethroid and insect growth regulator pesticide use for agriculture, urban and municipal pest control are of increasing concern in coastal areas as other pesticide groups come under strict regulations and that they possess the potential to significantly impact aquatic resources. Action research engages researchers and communities in iterative, reflective inquiry to address issues and solve problems with the support of data analysis. The study was structured by and analyzed using the prototype Vash Recycling Model (VRM). For three years, January 2005 through December 2007, this study engaged textiles, apparel, and merchandising students at West Virginia University in collaboration with The Mission, a homeless shelter in Clarksburg, in a joint recycling project. The VRM, found to be an effective guide in textiles and apparel recycling, assisted environmental sustainability, and in 2007 eliminated 679,271 pounds of waste from the landfill while generating …

A new synthetic pathway leading to buckybowls was developed via cascade cyclization reactions of benzannulated enyne-allenes. The convergent assembly of the benzannulated enediynyl propargylic alcohols and the efficient cascade cyclizations of the resulting enyne-allenes leading to polycyclic aromatic dibromides for subsequent palladium-catalyzed intramolecular arylation reactions are the key features of this synthetic pathway. A variety of heterocyclic compounds including indoles, quinolines, and pyrroloindoles has been synthesized. The key step in these alkaloids' syntheses is a palladium-catalyzed reductive N-heteroannulation previously discovered in our laboratory. The ultimate reducing agent in these palladium-catalyzed cyclizations is carbon monoxide. Furthermore, a base-mediated formation of 2-unsubstituted N-alkoxyindoles is described from readily available nitrostyrenes. Finally, progress towards the first total synthesis of the highly bioactive Echinosulfone A is reported.

Cytochromes P450 are a large family of heme-thiolate enzymes which metabolize a wide variety of both endogenous and xenobiotic compounds. Human P450 1A1 and 1A2 are two major members of the P450 1A subfamily. They share 72% sequence identity but display different specificities towards various substrates. In order to further understand the structure-function relationships of these enzymes, we have performed several molecular modeling-based studies that examined various functional domains of P450 1As. Current stream restoration practices focus on stabilizing banks, transporting sediment, and creating aquatic habitats. However, only channel morphology data are collected prior to typical restoration project designs. A more thorough approach to assessing restoration projects incorporates the geomorphology of the contributing hillslopes within the watershed. For this project, a landslide risk assessment was conducted for Horseshoe Run watershed in West Virginia using LiDAR data, GIS, and multivariate statistical analysis to provide the restoration projects with information concerning the geomorphology of the hillslopes and identify areas of greater risk for slope failure. The indicator species concept is appealing to land managers charged with monitoring and conserving the vast and complex biological diversity with limited available finances. We review common management indicator species (MIS) selection criteria and associated criticisms, including sensitivity to disturbance, monitoring efficacy, baseline information, and social and economic importance. Additionally, we examine current MIS for the Monongahela National Forest based on our review of selection criteria. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) associating with 80% of vascular plant families increase uptake of nutrients and water in plants, help to stabilize soil aggregates and improve soil aeration, water percolation and carbon storage. Phylogeny of AMF based on rDNA sequences is in conflict with morphology-based phylogeny. The aim of the present study was to examine a protein encoding gene, β-tubulin, in order to test conclusions drawn from rDNA sequences and morphological data. To test the premise that optimal learning and development require a constructivist education of the whole person, this research examined outcomes of instruction using an approach called Innate Health which claims that awareness of the dynamics of thought will stimulate healthy, productive behavior (presumably innate). The objective of this research was to investigate the skeletal muscle response to a chronic administration of stretch-shortening cycles (SSCs) in young and old rats. Dorsiflexor muscles of old and young rats were exposed 3 times per week for 4.5 weeks to a protocol of 80 maximal stretch-shortening cycles per exposure in vivo. Skeletal muscle response was characterized by force and work parameters of the stretch-shortening contraction at each exposure interval. The performance of the young and old groups was not statistically different at the start of the exposure, but increased significantly by 25%-30% in the young animals and decreased …

Biosensors are used to convert a biological change into a quantifiable signal that can be output via a transducer and are commonly used for the detection and identification of biological agents. Optical biosensors are a class of biosensors that make use of light as the transduced signal and are desirable for their highly sensitive, often non-destructive analyte analysis. Two such optical biosensors being investigated are the Stacked Planar Affinity Regulated Resonant Optical Waveguide (SPARROW) biosensor and the photonic crystal-based, resonant-enhanced fluorescence sensor. Predictions based on the Gypsy Moth Event Monitor and the Stand Damage Model were compared to remeasurement plot data from long-term studies which received gypsy moth defoliation. Data were from three studies located in the Appalachian hardwood region and the Atlantic Coastal Plain. Projection errors, in terms of trees per acre and basal area per acre, were examined. The Stand Damage Model underestimated trees per acre and basal area per acre for all simulated stands. The Gypsy Moth Event Monitor modified Forest Vegetation Simulator underestimated defoliation events, especially those of high intensity; however, these errors were often reduced over time …

The Beaver Creek watershed, a Mid-Appalachian watershed, located in Tucker County, West Virginia, was heavily impacted by coal mining and subsequently reclaimed by reforestation and revegetation. A stream monitoring study was conducted from 2000 to 2006 for the streams in the watershed to investigate the impact of land reclamation by reforestation and revegetation on water quality and macroinvertebrates. GIS tools and multivariate statistical analyses were applied to characterize land cover; assess temporal trends of the stream conditions; and examine the linkages among water quality, land cover, and biotic condition. For many years, lead was used to make the white pigment used in residential paints. Although lead paint was finally banned for residential use in 1978, the environmental legacy of contaminated residences and adjacent soils remains. Lead poisoning continues to be a major public health issue. Those at most risk for lead poisoning are children, especially those who 1) live in low quality housing, or those undergoing unsafe restoration or repainting jobs, that were built before 1978, 2) have parents with lead-based hobbies or occupations, and 3) live near lead mining or processing facilities. Job satisfaction is considered to be the most important and frequently examined outcome variable in congruence research. The assumption that congruence results in job satisfaction is fundamental to Holland's theory; however, the empirical evidence predominantly indicates that the congruence - job satisfaction correlation is, at best, equivocal. There is a movement within vocational psychology that the congruence construct is “dead” as a viable theoretical concept and that the field should abandon Holland's theory. This study looks at the construction of Operation Iraqi Freedom as a social problem by the New York Times and USA Today between July 2002 and June 2007. Articles were coded as political, military, social, economic, or “other.” Key word searches were conducted to further explore these categories. Antiwar articles were also counted. Primary and secondary themes throughout the period of analysis were then developed. Interestingly, the findings indicate that there were two constructions of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The first construction, which we called the Antiterrorism Mission, focused on the necessity of military intervention due to the terrorist threat. The …

This thesis details the response of a land-grant university to the development of quantum mechanics and relativity across a forty-year period. Concurrently with this, it traces the pattern of normal research at the university to show how the development of new physical theories impacted a representative physics department. The Physics department at West Virginia University at first paid little attention to relativity then after 1924 rejected its theoretical underpinnings. Wholesale acceptance of the theory did not occur until after the replacement of the pre-World War II generation of physicists. Motivation to change is considered an important factor in treatment adherence and outcome, yet there is a lack of research on parental motivation to change in the child psychotherapy literature. The current study examined the internal consistency of a measure of parental motivation, the Parent Motivation Inventory (PMI) and investigated associated demographic and psychological characteristics in 61 mothers of children who exhibited varying degrees of inattentive and/or hyperactive/impulsive symptoms. Results demonstrated that the PMI has high internal consistency, can distinguish between mothers of children with and without ADHD, and that an additional 7% of variance in the PMI can be …

The focus of this thesis is the electrical effects and thermal stability of plasma damage in AlGaN alloys. The effects of surface treatment using Ar and Cl2 /BCl3 inductively coupled plasmas on the rectifying characteristics of Pt/Au contacts to AlxGa1−xN (x=0– 0.5) were investigated. Plasma treatment increased the conductivity of GaN and Al0.1Ga0.9N surfaces, making the rectifying contacts into Ohmic contacts. For higher Al­ content AlGaN, the Schottky diodes turned leaky after Cl2 /BCl3 plasma treatment, where damage creation and etching occur simultaneously, whereas the diodes become more rectifying upon Ar plasma exposure, in which plasma damage accumulates. There is need for an anesthetic to sedate fishes that does not require a mandatory post-exposure withdrawal period. Such an anesthetic could be used to sedate handled fishes as they are moved from tank to tank on the farm, surveyed in the wild, released from state and federal hatcheries, or harvested for human consumption. A proprietary form of clove oil, AQUI-S® , was recently submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for approval as a 0-day withdrawal anesthetic for use on aquatic organisms. The purpose of this study was to test this hypothesis examining the in vivo effects of ultrafine and fine particles on certain parameters of pulmonary damage and inflammation in the rat model. To do this each treatment group received a dosage based on mass particles. This dosage was then expressed as surface area of the particles (instead of mass) to determine if surface area rather than mass is the more appropriate metric of dose for pulmonary toxicity studies. Foresters in West Virginia follow BMP guidelines by reseeding retired log landings with inexpensive grasses that quickly provide erosion control. However, these grasses typically are not native nor do they provide high quality forage for wildlife. I developed 3 native seed mixtures for log landing reclamation that would maintain sediment control, as well as enhance wildlife habitat. These mixtures included an erosion control mixture, a wildlife mixture, and a wildflower mixture. I assessed sediment control, biomass production, vegetation structure, forage quality, and small mammal usage of my native mixtures and a commonly used, nonnative traditional mixture in 2005 and 2006. …
