The Diverse Relationship Of Kruppel-Like Factors 4 And 5 In Breast Cancer, Mark K. Farrugia
The Diverse Relationship Of Kruppel-Like Factors 4 And 5 In Breast Cancer, Mark K. Farrugia
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Kruppel-like factors (KLFs) are transcription factors that participate in numerous biological functions, mainly impacting cell fate and differentiation. KLFs 4 and 5 (KLF4/5) are two highly studied members of this family, implicated to have diverse roles in both normal and abnormal physiology. KLF4 is primarily expressed in post-mitotic, differentiated epithelium and consistent with this observation, KLF4 exerts suppressive effects on cellular growth. Paradoxically, KLF4 can promote malignant features in both squamous cell carcinoma of the skin and breast cancer. We have attempted to better understand the nature of KLF4 in cancer via its relationship with KLF5. Although the two are …
Sports Investment, Beliefs About Food-Related Behaviors, And Engagement In Problematic Eating Behaviors During Adolescence, Kaitlyn A. Ferris
Sports Investment, Beliefs About Food-Related Behaviors, And Engagement In Problematic Eating Behaviors During Adolescence, Kaitlyn A. Ferris
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Involvement in sport is the most widely reported organized activity among children and adolescents. To date, organized sports also represent the only organized activity examined in conjunction with youths' eating behaviors. Organized sports serve as contexts where messages about healthy eating and body image are communicated, and adolescents' beliefs about food and their bodies' degree of thinness and muscularity has the potential to be amplified in such settings as youth strive to perform at high levels during athletic competitions. However, inconsistency in the measurement of both organized sports participation and adolescents' engagement in problematic under- and over-eating behaviors has resulted …

First Year Sprouting And Growth Dynamics Of Northern Red Oak, Yellow-Poplar, Red Maple, And Sweet Birch On A Mesic Site Following A Release Burn During A "Shelterwood-Burn" Sequence, Maria Adele Fenwick
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Oak regeneration challenges are a widespread issue across the mixed oak and mixed mesophytic forests of the eastern United States. Following disturbance on many mesic and sub-mesic sites oaks are being replaced by faster growing or shade tolerant species. There are many contributing factors, but one thought to have the strongest influence is attributed to the effects of 20th century fire suppression. For millennia fire was an integral part of oak dominated ecosystems and is thought to have contributed to and perpetuated oak's importance in these forests. During the 20th century the frequency and spatial scale of fire was severely …

Influence Of Mycorrhizal Fungi On Soil Geochemistry And Plant Uptake Of Cadmium And Zinc: Greenhouse And Soil Studies Of Palmerton Zinc Superfund Site, Pennsylvania, U.S.A, Christian X. Figueroa
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The application of bioremediation as a means to ameliorate potentially toxic metals from contaminated soils has been on the forefront of sustainable technologies in the field of environmental studies. Conventional methods available for soil remediation are employed in both in situ or ex situ and these are: soil flushing, solidification/stabilization, vitrification, electrokinetics, chemical reduction/oxidation, soil washing, and excavation. In general, these technologies are limited by their applicability to small areas and the high costs to execute. The use of biota, in particular fungi and trees, has been an emerging low-cost and "environmentally-friendly" alternative to conventional technologies. In this study, I …
Dimensions Of Political Reasoning: Associations Among Informational Assumptions, Sociopolitical Values, And Domain-Specific Judgments About Laws, Benjamin Oosterhoff
Dimensions Of Political Reasoning: Associations Among Informational Assumptions, Sociopolitical Values, And Domain-Specific Judgments About Laws, Benjamin Oosterhoff
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Adolescents' beliefs about laws are a critical component of their emerging political reasoning, which is hypothesized to guide political decisions in adulthood. Laws serve a variety of purposes by restricting certain social behaviors. However, little is known about the types of laws adolescents view as important and obligatory to obey, or the amount of punishment that should be received for breaking different laws. Identifying individual differences in these beliefs may help elucidate the developmental origins of political attitudes. Therefore, the current study had three primary goals. The first goal was to utilize social domain theory to assess adolescents' judgments and …
Kriging-Based Design Of Experiments For Multi-Source Exposure-Response Studies In Nanotoxicology, Ying Pei
Kriging-Based Design Of Experiments For Multi-Source Exposure-Response Studies In Nanotoxicology, Ying Pei
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
One of the major challenges with toxicology studies of nanomaterials (NMs), compared to traditional materials or chemicals, lies in the large NM variety (or sources) caused by their various physico-chemical properties. How to efficiently design multi-source biological experiments for the toxicity characterization of NMs in terms of their exposure-response profiles? This work intends to address this question by a two-stage experimental design procedure, which is developed based on the statistical model, stochastic kriging with qualitative factors (SKQ). With a given experimental budget, the SKQ-based design method aims at achieving the highest-quality SKQ, which synergistically models the exposure-response data from multiple …
An Examination Of Households' Willingness-To-Pay For Wetlands Biodiversity Conservation In The United States: A Benefit Transfer Approach, Rajendra Prasad Poudel
An Examination Of Households' Willingness-To-Pay For Wetlands Biodiversity Conservation In The United States: A Benefit Transfer Approach, Rajendra Prasad Poudel
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This research paper provides a benefit transfer model of willingness-to-pay (WTP) for wetlands' biodiversity conservation in the United States. The validity of the estimated wetland's willingness-to-pay values is also examined. While valuation of the services provided by wetlands may be challenging due to their non-market nature, estimation of values is important. Conducting a primary study is the best option for precise results. However, researchers may recommend the benefit transfer approach in wetland valuation when there are limited time, budgetary constraints, and administrative urgency.;The benefit transfer approach involves transferring of value estimates from study sites (where research was already undertaken) to …
Copper-Mediated Oxidative Decarboxylative Coupling Reactions: Trifluoromethylation Of Heteroarene C-H Bonds With Trifluoroacetic Acid As The Cf3 Source And C-H Arylation Of Benzoxazoles With Benzoic Acids, Lin Ju
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Compared with the prefunctionalized substrates in traditional cross-coupling reactions, carboxylic acid derivatives are easier to handle and commercially available in a broad scope, making them ideal starting materials to build biaryl structures. Copper has been demonstrated to decarboxylate carboxylic acids. There are also several examples of copper-mediated oxidative coupling reactions with two nucleophilic components. However, the copper-mediated direct C-H trifluoromethylation and arylation of heteroarenes with trifluoroacetic acid and benzoic acids is still challenging.;This thesis is divided into three chapters. Chapter I and Chapter II will describe copper-mediated oxidative decarboxylative trifluoromethylation of C-H bonds, including heteroarenes and arenes bearing a directing …
The Role Of Dynorphin In The Onset Of Puberty In Female Lambs, Justin Angelo Lopez
The Role Of Dynorphin In The Onset Of Puberty In Female Lambs, Justin Angelo Lopez
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The neural mechanisms underlying the onset of puberty are not well understood. In sheep, this process involves an increase in GnRH release due to decreased sensitivity to estrogen feedback. Because GnRH neurons do not express the relevant estrogen receptors, this pathway must contain interneurons. Neurons in the arcuate nucleus (ARC) of the hypothalamus that co-express kisspeptin (Kiss), neurokinin B, and dynorphin (DYN), i.e. KNDy neurons, play a critical role. Based on previous data, the overall hypothesis is that the prepubertal hold in GnRH/LH release results from reduced Kiss stimulation and heightened DYN inhibition in response to estrogen negative feedback. Two …
New Methods For Copper-Catalyzed Decarboxylative C-H Arylation Reactions, Lijun Chen
New Methods For Copper-Catalyzed Decarboxylative C-H Arylation Reactions, Lijun Chen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions have become a powerful tool to construct unsymmetric biaryl structures. Traditional cross-coupling requires prefunctionalized coupling partners, resulting in poor atom- and step-economy. As an alternative, carboxylic acids are attractive coupling precursors after the release of carbon dioxide. Carboxylic acids are readily available in a wide scope and easily stored and handled. Over the past decade, work has been performed on developing new methods for metal catalyzed redox neutral decarboxylative coupling reactions with benzoic acids. However, redox neutral decarboxylative coupling reactions require a prefunctionalized aryl halide or aryl triflate coupling partner. Alternatively, oxidative decarboxylative cross-coupling enables direct C-H …

Propagating Precipitation Waves In Hydrogels, Darrell Collison
Propagating Precipitation Waves In Hydrogels, Darrell Collison
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In 1896, Raphael E. Liesegang discovered that precipitation reactions may produce striking precipi- tation rings and bands. More than a century later, propagating precipitation waves were discovered in similar reactions. The bands and rings discovered by Liesegang are static, but traveling precipitation waves exhibit complex spatiotemporal dynamics. Traveling waves are widespread and occur in both living and nonliving systems. Examples include calcium waves propagating through Xenopus laevis oocytes, cyclic AMP waves in colonies of Dictyostelium discordium cells, and spiral waves in propagating flames fronts. Recently, traveling waves were identified in a precipitation reaction involving AlCl3 and NaOH. The propagating precipitation …
Effects Of Protein Supplementation On Parasitism And Growth In Grazing Lambs, Crista Crawford
Effects Of Protein Supplementation On Parasitism And Growth In Grazing Lambs, Crista Crawford
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Controlling gastrointestinal nematode infection of sheep has become a challenge resulting from reduced anthelmintic efficacy. Previous data have indicated that grazing lambs supplemented with a 16% CP ration at 1% BW maintained growth comparable to lambs given anthelmintic despite greater infection. Thus the objective of the following studies was to determine the effects of bypass protein on fecal egg count reduction and post weaning growth in parasitized, grazing lambs. Experiment one utilized spring-born Suffolk crossbred lambs separated into 3 supplement groups: alfalfa pellets (AFP) (15% CP), corn and soybean meal (CSM) (19% CP) and corn, soybean meal and fish meal …
Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Recovery Methods Of Trace Evidence For Pollen Particles, Christie Cyktor
Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Recovery Methods Of Trace Evidence For Pollen Particles, Christie Cyktor
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Within the forensic science community, pollen as a form of trace evidence is extremely underutilized. In many instances, trace evidence examiners and crime scene investigators are unfamiliar with how best to recover pollen from a piece of evidence. Methods such as vacuum sweeping, tape lifting, and sonication have been implemented for the recovery of the test dust from materials such as clothing, shoes, or improvised explosive devices. While these methods are known to be beneficial with some trace materials, their effectiveness with pollen has yet to be determined. The goal of this research project was to implement and compare multiple …
Gendering Labor: How Foreign Direct Investment Affects State Behavior Towards Female Labor In South And Southeast Asia, Ritu Dhungana
Gendering Labor: How Foreign Direct Investment Affects State Behavior Towards Female Labor In South And Southeast Asia, Ritu Dhungana
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study examines the partnership between foreign capital (FDI) and state in manipulating women's labor. In this dissertation I have two research questions: My first research question is to determine whether the interaction between states and FDI renders workers vulnerable and unprotected. Other scholars have shown that states have been willing to relax labor laws (and offer non labor-related incentives) in order to attract FDI. My hypothesis is that cultural patriarchy intensifies this relationship between states and FDI, and further weakens the labor laws. My second research question is to identify the causal factors that bring about change in the …
Role Of Mitochondria In Tnf-Alpha Neurotoxicity In Stroke, Danielle N. Doll
Role Of Mitochondria In Tnf-Alpha Neurotoxicity In Stroke, Danielle N. Doll
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
TNF-alpha is known to exacerbate infarct volume in animal models and elevated levels of TNF-alpha are correlated with worse outcomes in stroke patients. However, the mechanism is not well understood. TNF-alpha has been shown to be neurotoxic at high doses and after long exposure times which is not clinically relevant. Thus, we show for the first time that TNF-alpha at clinically relevant concentrations seen in the serum of stroke patients rapidly and profoundly decreases mitochondrial function resulting in neuronal cell death through activation of caspase 8 and cytochrome c release. A slight decrease in mitochondrial function is detrimental to neurons …

Research into biodiesel as a substitute for petroleum diesel has been ongoing since the energy crisis of the 1970's. The concern for the effect on the use of edible vegetable oils as feedstock has increased. Tall oil fatty acids have been considered as a non-food substitute and various works have been done on it. In this study, sulfuric acid and Amberlyst BD 20 were used as homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts respectively in the production of biodiesel from Tall oil fatty acids in a batch reactor. The treatment conditions for the homogeneous catalysis varied the factors of fatty acid to methanol …
A Novel Microbial Source Tracking Dna Microarray Used For Pathogen Detection In Environmental Systems, Xiang Li
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Pathogen detection and the identification of fecal contamination sources can be challenging in environmental and engineered treatment systems. Factors including pathogen diversity and ubiquity of fecal indicator bacteria hamper risk assessment and remediation of contamination sources. Therefore, a quick method that can detect and identify waterborne pathogens in environmental systems is needed. In this work, a custom microarray targeting pathogens (viruses, bacteria, protozoa), microbial source tracking (MST) markers, mitochondria DNA (mtDNA) and antibiotic resistance genes was used to detect over 430 selected gene targets in whole genome amplification (WGA) DNA and complementary DNA (cDNA) isolated from sewage and animal (avian, …
Discovery Of A Novel Oocyte-Specific Krab-Containing Zinc Finger Protein Required For Early Embryogenesis In Cattle, Jacqelyn M. Hand
Discovery Of A Novel Oocyte-Specific Krab-Containing Zinc Finger Protein Required For Early Embryogenesis In Cattle, Jacqelyn M. Hand
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Much of the loss of potential offspring in cattle is concentrated in the early embryonic period. Maternal mRNAs that accumulate in the oocyte during oogenesis have important functional roles during the initial stages of embryonic development, before embryonic genome activation. It is well regarded that the oocyte plays an active role in regulation of key aspects of the reproductive process required for fertility. What is more, oocyte-specific transcription factors seem to be the controlling feature influencing germ cell success throughout oogenesis, fertilization, and early embryonic development. Of the remarkably diverse array of transcription factors encoded by mammalian genomes, about two-thirds …

The Assessment Of Instruments For Detecting Surface Water Spills And A Three-Dimensional Model Of The Elk River Spill, Aubrey E. Harris
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Source water protection has been an increasing area of concern due to the risks associated with chemical storage and oil and gas operations. To better identify and mitigate risk, models and tools are needed to evaluate the dispersion of pollutants in possible spill scenarios. This information may be used to determine the placement of in-stream water quality monitoring instruments and to develop early-warning systems and emergency plans.;In this work, two approaches of applying chemical dispersion models are described: one to determine the necessary concentration to generate a signal from in-stream measurements; and second to demonstrate, in a numerical three-dimensional model, …
3d Seismic Attribute-Assisted Analysis Of Microseismic Events In The Marcellus Shale, Ariel Kelton Hart
3d Seismic Attribute-Assisted Analysis Of Microseismic Events In The Marcellus Shale, Ariel Kelton Hart
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Microseismic monitoring is often used during the process of oil and gas exploitation to monitor seismicity that may be triggered by hydraulic fracturing, a common practice in the Appalachian Basin. Anthropogenically-induced minor upward fracture growth is not uncommon in the Marcellus shale; however, in the area of study, significant microseismic activity was registered above the target zone. In order to ascertain whether out-of-zone growth might have been predictable and identify which areas are more likely to experience brittle failure first, 3D seismic and microseismic data were analyzed with a focus on better understanding variations in the acoustic properties associated with …

Family Distress, First-Generation College Status, And Financial Stress As Predictors Of Alcohol Use In College Students Seeking Mental Health Treatment, Narayan Jeremy Gold
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Increasing numbers of students have been presenting for mental health treatment on college campuses to address their alcohol use (Gallagher, 2010). The goal of the current study was to examine the relationship between presenting alcohol use, family distress, college generational status (first-generation to college or non-first-generation to college), and financial distress. By examining the predictive nature of these variables screening could be improved to help identify and help students who are more at risk of experiencing the negative impact of alcohol use. It was hypothesized that higher levels of family distress, more financial stress, and being a first-generation college student …

The purpose of this dissertation was to explore how psychosocial development affects doctoral students' relationships with their advisor and their success in graduate school. Toward this goal, three objectives were identified. The first objective was to integrate Chickering and Reisser's (1993) vectors of psychosocial development into the doctoral education context to understand how mature students maintain their relationships and address conflict with their advisor. The second objective was to investigate the extent to which doctoral students' psychosocial development and communication behaviors affected satisfaction in the student-advisor relationship. The third objective was to examine the effect of psychosocial development on doctoral …
Clustering By Academic Major At Historically Black Colleges And Universities (Hbcus), Aaron Goodson
Clustering By Academic Major At Historically Black Colleges And Universities (Hbcus), Aaron Goodson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Follow-up studies of clustering by academic major, the dynamic of 25% or more of the student-athletes on a roster pursuing the same academic major, indicate that it still occurs in revenue-generating sports (Fountain & Finley 2009, 2011; Otto, 2012). Clustering challenges the notion that student-athletes have control over their collegiate academic experience and reveals that their educational pursuits may not align with their professional goals or provide a meaningful educational experience (Sharp & Sheilley, 2008). Research on clustering is absent in member institutions of different NCAA divisions, institutions with unique missions and history (such as Historically Black Colleges and Universities …
Cross-Boundary Conservation Attributes Of Farmland And Woodland Owners In The Greenbrier River Valley Landscape Of Southeastern West Virginia, Valerie Grant
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Greenbrier River watershed features some of the most productive agriculture and timberlands, critical habitat, and extensive recreational opportunities in the central Appalachian Mountains. Cross-boundary conservation projects could address landscape scale issues such as parallelization and fragmentation in the agricultural, forest, and recreationally productive rural area in southeastern West Virginia. A survey of farmland and woodland owners explored relationships between landowner attributes, land management activities, sense of place, and willingness to participate in cross-boundary conservation efforts. Logistic regression analysis revealed two significant relationships between landowner attributes when considering neighboring properties while making management decisions and interest in conservation easements. These …
