This grounded theory study explores the sparsely examined phenomenon of men faculty engagement in gender equity work through the National Science Foundation's (NSF) ADVANCE project and one of its program innovations, Men Faculty Advocates and Allies (A & A). The A & A initiative recruits two categories of men faculty---advocates and allies---to engage in a program of work designed to heighten awareness about gender inequity and redress it through strategic efforts at the individual, departmental, and institutional level. Advocates are usually senior faculty or program administrators from within and outside of STEM fields. They assume the greater part of the …

Serotonergic Modulation Of Inhibitory Input To Lateral Horn Affects Odor-Mediated Attraction In D. Melanogaster, Ayad Auda Jan 2017

Serotonergic Modulation Of Inhibitory Input To Lateral Horn Affects Odor-Mediated Attraction In D. Melanogaster, Ayad Auda

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

To survive, animals must eat, mate, and avoid danger by sensing external stimuli, processing sensory information into perception, and eliciting the appropriate behavioral responses in accordance with their physiological states. Unlike learned responses, innate responses are genetically inherited and do not require the animal to have a previous encounter with the stimulus to elicit an action. However, innate responses can be flexible based on the physiological state of the animal. This flexibility is achieved through constant alterations in network dynamics which ensures that the animal's responses are most effective. This alteration occurs to some extent by modulatory neurons/nuclei at multiple …

The Use Of Concentration Of Anti-Mullerian Hormone (Amh) As An Indicator Of Reproductive Performance In Livestock Species, Adam Karl Russell Redhead Jan 2017

The Use Of Concentration Of Anti-Mullerian Hormone (Amh) As An Indicator Of Reproductive Performance In Livestock Species, Adam Karl Russell Redhead

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Reproductive success is essential for high levels of animal productivity. Low fertility has been identified as one of the main constraints hindering the productivity of livestock systems. To address this problem, several tools such as genomic selection and assisted reproductive techniques (ART) have been implemented. Two of the more common ART used to improve reproductive performance are artificial insemination (AI) and embryo transfer (ET). The success of these methods is highly dependent on individual animal characteristics; therefore the ability to select animals that provide high levels of reproductive success is essential. The size of the ovarian antral follicular population (AFP) …

Examining Strain Propagation In The Lateral And Codominant Branch Attachment Using Digital Image Correlation, Robert T. Eckenrode Iv

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Static load testing of branches is a well-established method for examining attachment strength of trees. Information gathered from these experiments is used to better understand how branches fail, and predict how they are attached to their parent stem. Digital image correlation (DIC) is used to directly measure strain on the surface of materials during static load testing. By examining how strain moves through the branch attachment, a better understanding of how trees carry loads can also be attained. In these experiments, strain propagation in the branch connection zone of lateral and codominant stems was measured utilizing digital image correlation. In …

Student-Athletes' Experiences With Racial Microaggressions In Sport: A Foucauldian Discourse Analysis, Sae-Mi Lee

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Despite growing research on racial microaggressions as a subtle but prevalent form of racial discrimination, research on microaggressions in sport and their effects on the psychosocial wellbeing of athletes is scarce. Moreover, some researchers question the legitimacy of microaggressions due to their subtle nature and the inconsistency among individuals in how microaggressions are experienced (Lilienfeld, 2017). The purpose of this study was to examine U.S. collegiate student-athletes-of-colors' experiences with racial microaggressions in sport through a new theoretical lens, Foucauldian poststructuralist theory. I theorized microaggressions as an example of the daily panoptic gaze that leads to self-surveillance and the production of …

This MFA thesis addresses work completed and presented in a thesis exhibition at West Virginia University, the conceptual underpinnings of this work, and the personal motivations for such conceptual lines of inquiry. Focusing on traditional fine art practices of drawing and intaglio printmaking, the accurate reproduction of reality is a strategy for changing the context in which utilitarian infrastructural objects are seen. The goal of this project is to shift infrastructure from "eyesore" status to a state of aesthetic appreciation. Through visual isolation, these objects are given the opportunity to stand as discrete and sublime forms. The objects cease to …

Storytelling, Survival, And Child Figures In Contemporary American Life-Writing, Yvonne Michelle Swartz Hammond Jan 2017

Storytelling, Survival, And Child Figures In Contemporary American Life-Writing, Yvonne Michelle Swartz Hammond

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

My dissertation explores strategies for survival primarily related to acts of storytelling, and more specifically storytelling with the tacit agreement for measures of truth, what I refer to in my title as life-writing. The term "life-writing" refers broadly to literary and theatrical works that are connected to the lived-experience. The texts I examine, all written in the U.S. after 1990, consider the impact of traumatic and unjust pasts through sweeping, epic narratives. Each of these texts tells a separate story about injustice through stories that reveal children as victims of discursive and/or actual violence arising out of conflict between and …

Whole-Farm Phosphorus Management In West Virginia Beef Cattle Operations, Justin Brackenrich Jan 2017

Whole-Farm Phosphorus Management In West Virginia Beef Cattle Operations, Justin Brackenrich

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Demand for animal proteins is increasing worldwide, spurring an increase in forage based agricultural production. Forage based agriculture utilizes grass and legume crops from areas which are not suited for row-crop production to feed ruminant animals. These systems provide increased animal proteins to consumer markets, while using minimal amounts of cereal crops that would otherwise be used for human consumption. However, forage based agriculture does not come without a risk of environmental degradation. The US EPA determined that agriculture non-point source (NPS) pollution is among the top three causes of phosphorus (P) related surface water impairment and accounts for an …

Economic Activity And The Association Of Spending Rate And Spending Rate Volatility On Borrowing Cost, Anna W. Hickey Jan 2017

Economic Activity And The Association Of Spending Rate And Spending Rate Volatility On Borrowing Cost, Anna W. Hickey

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Achieving minimum borrowing cost for municipal bonds is an ongoing concern. Apostolou, Apostolou, and Dorminey (2014) demonstrated that a fund accounting measure, spending rate magnitude (i.e., the absolute value of general fund revenues minus general fund expenditures) proxied for management's ability to balance revenues and expenditures. Their findings indicated that achieving balance at spending rate equilibrium (i.e., where general fund revenues equal general fund expenditures) was associated with minimum borrowing cost, and that the magnitude of departure from spending rate equilibrium was associated with higher borrowing cost. Little is known regarding the information content of spending rate in the years …

Effects Of Chronic Electronic Cigarette Use On Glucose Metabolism, Hannah Hoskinson Jan 2017

Effects Of Chronic Electronic Cigarette Use On Glucose Metabolism, Hannah Hoskinson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Traditional cigarette usage has been linked to a number of nefarious metabolic effects, including insulin resistance; however, the effects of electronic cigarettes (E-cigs) are not currently known. Advertised as a safe alternative for traditional tobacco cigarettes, E-cigs still contain some of the same harmful chemicals as tobacco cigarettes. Through this study, we hope to gain perspective on whether e-cigs play into the development of altered glucose homeostasis. C57BL/6 mice were divided between E-cig (n=15) and control (n=15) groups and exposed to either cappuccino flavored E-cig vapor or filtered air for 4 h/d, 5 d/wk for 8 months. Fasting blood glucose …

Differential Response Policy And Child Maltreatment Re-Report, Amy A. Hunter

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Child maltreatment is a serious public health issue. The decisions made by Child Protective Services (CPS) in response to reports of maltreatment may influence a child's risk of subsequent maltreatment. Studies have found a direct relationship between adverse childhood events (ACEs), (e.g., experiencing maltreatment, exposure to violence) and negative health outcomes across the lifespan (e.g., disease, developmental delays, suicidality, injury and death). Traditional CPS investigations focus on determining details of abuse events, and use that information to assess child safety and risk of future harm. The introduction of differential response policy provides supportive and preventive services to mitigate the risk …

Secondary Voltage Control Using Singular Value Decomposition By Discovering Community Structures In Power Networks, Talha Iqbal Jan 2017

Secondary Voltage Control Using Singular Value Decomposition By Discovering Community Structures In Power Networks, Talha Iqbal

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Voltage and Frequency control are the two fundamental control problems in power systems. Unlike frequency control, voltage control is complicated by the fact that reactive power can't travel far distances from its source of generation. Due to this distributed nature of reactive power, voltage control is usually performed in decentralized manner. Typically, voltage control problem is divided into a three-level hierarchical structure namely primary, secondary and tertiary voltage control.;The aim of this thesis is to present an optimal secondary voltage control by decomposing a large power system into small subsystems called voltage control areas (VCAs) using the fast community detection …

Wildlife In An Anthropogenically-Driven World: How Humans Have Shaped The Distribution, Genetic Composition, And Gene Expression Of North American Forest Hawks (Genus: Accipiter), Meghan K. Jensen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Humans are causing drastic environmental change on a global scale and this trend strongly influences the evolution of species. It is also becoming clear that tolerances to anthropogenic disturbance varies widely among organisms. Therefore, understanding the mechanisms by which wildlife cope with humans is a pressing question in modern ecology. North America's forest raptors (Genus: Accipiter) are a useful model for investigating the effects of humans on wildlife species. All three Accipiter species experienced historic demographic declines as a result of anthropogenic activities, yet each species has rebounded differently since these declines. One species in particular is now exploiting urban …

The Quest For A Key Gene Controlling Acquisition Of Cell Competence During In Vitro Organogenesis In Tomato, Chanaka Roshan Abeyratne Jan 2017

The Quest For A Key Gene Controlling Acquisition Of Cell Competence During In Vitro Organogenesis In Tomato, Chanaka Roshan Abeyratne

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Plants show a remarkable capacity for vegetative propagation through de novo organogenesis. Unlike their wild relatives, most commercially important crop species lack this ability, which is largely attributed to their inability to acquire regeneration competence by dedifferentiation of somatic cells. In vitro micropropagation relies heavily on overcoming such regeneration recalcitrance for its success in biotechnology and clonal propagation in agriculture. Here, we investigate a key locus (Regeneration1) responsible for acquisition of competence that confers high rates of de novo shoot and root organogenesis in tomato. In vitro shoot regeneration assay was performed in several Solanum pennellii introgression lines into S. …

Synthesis Of Bismuth Ferrite For Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting, Fagr Albagle

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In recent decades, researchers have noted a significant academic gap between males and females. Boys are falling behind their female counterparts. Boys have lower grades and are less likely to participate in more advanced coursework. Boys are more likely to drop out of high school and college, and are graduating from higher education in lower numbers than females. Several reasons are given for the gender achievement gap in K-12 education, including the higher percentage of female teachers, the increase of a literacy focus, and the lack of experiential learning in school. In an effort to bridge the gender achievement gap, …
