A high prevalence of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in Great Lakes Areas of Concern (AOCs) has raised concerns as to the health and fitness of fish and wildlife. It is not well understood to what extent existing contaminants, many with continuing inflows into the environment, may impact fish populations. This study provides an initial characterization of thyroid endocrine-related effects in two indigenous fish species sampled from Great Lakes AOCs. Smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) are an important sportfish in the Susquehanna and Potomac River Basins of the Chesapeake Bay drainage. However, population declines in portions of the Susquehanna, fish kills and reports of visible abnormalities such as melanistic spots have raised concern among the public and resource managers. Although the etiology or risk factors associated with melanistic lesions are unknown, there is a propensity to attribute the abnormality to contaminants. Melanistic lesions of smallmouth bass were assessed using histopathology and gene expression analysis to evaluate the cellular and molecular changes compared to normal skin. Urban agriculture (UA) is part of the broader alternative food movement and a potential avenue through which to “do” food justice work. UA projects in the urban Global North are frequently motivated by social and food justice goals. Despite these guiding ideals, UA projects in America are rife with internal contradictions, including those related to racial inequalities, complex gentrification dynamics, and funding realities. In this paper, I employ the conceptual frameworks of food justice and urban political ecology to consider how gentrification and UA project funding structures affect five specific UA projects in Philadelphia’s Kensington neighborhood. Transgender individuals report facing incidents of discrimination often in all aspects of their lives (James et al., 2016). A potential way to combat the discrimination transgender people face is through reducing transgender prejudice. However, it is not yet known what comprises transgender prejudice. Some research has found that emotions may be the more predominant determinant of prejudice, as opposed to stereotypes (Dasgupta, Desteno, Williams, & Hunsinger, 2009; Haddock, Zanna, & Esses, 1993a; Smith, 1993). Respirators are a common form of protection when working in environments where workers are exposed to harmful agents. One exposure that has not been rigorously tested is cigarette smoke. Air sampling was conducted to test the effectiveness of four different respirators N95 Respirators for various concentrations of cigarette smoke and seal conditions and for different respirators. The Moldex 2200, Moldex 2300 (exhalation valve), Gerson 1730, and 3M 8210V (Exhalation valve) were used for testing. BACKGROUND: Health and education are inherently connected. Minimizing risky behaviors is essential for students’ academic success and health outcomes. A positive school climate may reduce student risks and promote greater satisfaction and success with school. The purpose of this dissertation was to determine the associations between school climate, academic grades, substance initiation, and types of school absences in a group of middle school students who transition into high school. Several biological and physico-chemical processes lead to the transformation of organic matter (OM) from simple organic compounds to a complex macromolecule and a mixture of hydrocarbons during the geological evolution of sedimentary rocks. These changes are controlled by biological activity in the early stages of burial, and by temperature and pressure in the later stages. The increasing temperature and pressure conditions with burial is termed as maturation, in which biomolecules are converted into petroleum. Three consecutive stages of maturation namely: diagenesis, catagenesis and metagenesis produce irreversible changes in the composition of sedimentary OM. The gustatory system subjects ingested food to ‘quality control’ that prevents consumption of harmful compounds while also regulating nutrient intake. A better understanding of the physiological regulation of taste will enhance our ability to facilitate the appropriate consumption of nutrients and improve overall health. Bitter, sweet, and umami tastes are detected by a family of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) that associate with heterotrimeric G proteins and initiate intracellular signaling cascades after activation by tastant binding. ‘Regulators of G protein Signaling’ (RGS proteins) act as Ga-directed GTPase-accelerating proteins (GAPs) and thereby accelerate inactivation of GPCR-mediated signaling. Using Communication Theory of Identity (CTI) and the Bem Sex Role Index (BSRI), this study addresses the potential impact of societally-created, gendered expectations on the satisfaction of emerging adults. Two hundred twenty-nine undergraduates at a large mid-Atlantic university participated in the study by completing an online survey assessing gender, identity, and a relationship with a close other of their choosing. Results replicate previous research using CTI, which suggests that identity gaps relating to gender are dissatisfying. Specifically, gaps at the personal-enacted, personal-relational, and the newly-created personal-personal levels were negatively related to participant satisfaction, and personal-relational gaps were negatively correlated with …

Excess nutrient runoff, nitrates and phosphates, has led to the development of algal blooms and hypoxic zones worldwide. Based on a report from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation nearly half of all nutrient sources originate from agricultural production with a quarter of this resulting from improper management of manures. This project focuses on a novel adaption of a denitrifying bioreactor, which has demonstrated removals of agricultural nutrients, which may have implications on the treatment of manure nutrients. In this study, I evaluated impacts of unconventional shale gas development, or the combined use of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing (i.e., fracking), on forest land cover and breeding songbirds in the Marcellus-Utica shale region. Since 2005, extraction of natural gas from the Marcellus-Utica shale has increased exponentially in the central Appalachians, an area of high conservation value for global biodiversity. Although nearly extinct historically, the current population of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in West Virginia serves as a plentiful resource, however; currently there are two uncertainties to the socio-economic benefits of white-tailed deer in West Virginia: poaching and chronic wasting disease (CWD). Ambiphilic phosphinoborane ligands possess a phosphine and a borane that are attached through a chosen linker. Net ecosystem exchange (NEE) indicates the balance between photosynthetic uptake and respiration of CO2 in a biological system. A large set of climatic and ecohydrological variables drives the dynamics of NEE through complex, interacting biophysical processes. The relative climatic and ecohydrologic linkages of NEE were determined in this study for different temporal scales (i.e., 1-hour, 1-day, 8-day, 15-day, and 30-day) by utilizing a systematic data analytics methodology. Reproductive development in female teleosts like rainbow trout starts with release of the sex steroid estrogen, necessary for synthesis of the egg yolk protein vitellogenin. Increase in estrogen secretion during these reproductive phases results in increased energy demands. Skeletal muscle serves as an immediate endogenous source to address energy demands during vitellogenesis and spawning due to which it undergoes rapid degradation resulting in water accumulation, poor fillet and low egg quality. Youth with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) experience poor health-related quality of life (HRQOL; e.g., Cunningham et al., 2007; De Boer et al., 2005; Greenley et al., 2010). Previous research has demonstrated that factors such as problematic family functioning and increased general anxiety are associated with decreased HRQOL in pediatric IBD (e.g., Guilfoyle et al., 2014; Gumidyala & Greenley, 2014; Herzer et al., 2011a; Kilroy, Nolan, & Sarma, 2011). Two modes of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion are necessary for female fertility: surge and episodic secretion. However, the neural systems that regulate these GnRH secretion patterns are still under investigation. The neuropeptide somatostatin (SST) inhibits episodic luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion in humans and sheep, and several lines of evidence suggest SST may regulate secretion during the LH surge. Neither a SST receptor 2 (SSTR2) agonist (octreotide) or antagonist (CYN154806; CYN) altered the amplitude or timing of the LH surge. Entrepreneurial firms face dependence on other firms in the external environment to access resources critical for the development and survival of the firm. While substantial research has examined resource dependence and how firms may remedy such dependencies, the literature often fails to acknowledge key factors that can predict and explain firm behavior and outcomes in such situations. Firms are shown to enter into inter-organizational relationships in order to remedy resource dependencies, but studies typically evaluate such relationships according to their structure, rather than the resource being sought. Tomatoes are consumed all over the world, but mainly after the tomatoes have undergone processing. Approximately three quarters of tomatoes consumed within the US are processed. A review of the scientific literature was conducted to investigate nutrient losses caused by the current tomato canning process. The bulk of tomatoes nutrients and health benefits are within the skin and seed components, and currently both are removed for home and commercial canning process. Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composite wraps have been used for timber pile repair, but there is a lack of empirical data for the development of design guidelines and strengthening equations. To address this need, this study evaluated both the bond and compressive strength of four FRP wrap systems on whole timber piles. Wrap systems evaluated used glass fabric with epoxy, polyurethane, and phenol formaldehyde resins. Bond strengths were evaluated through push-out and pull-off bond testing data on new (unused) treated timber. The push-out test evaluated the bond strength of the wraps on timber by applying axial loads on wrapped (6" …
