A Comparative Study Of The Strategies To Maintain Enrollments At Japanese And American Private Institutions Of Higher Education As A Response To Decline In The Population Of Traditional-Age Students., Gregory Alan Snoddy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Japanese higher education institutions obtain 90% of their enrollments from the traditional age student population, yet this population will decrease by 26% between the years 1992 and 2000. With approximately 75% of all Japanese students attending private higher education institutions, there exist the possibility for an adverse impact on the private sector. U.S. institutions have addressed decreasing traditional age student populations by diversifying enrollments to include substantial numbers of non-traditional and part-time participants. The purpose of this study was to investigate the types of strategies being considered or used by Japanese private higher education institutions to maintain enrollments, and to …
Function Of An Autonomous Replication Sequence (Ars) In Coxiella Burnettii., Michelle Lynn Suhan
Function Of An Autonomous Replication Sequence (Ars) In Coxiella Burnettii., Michelle Lynn Suhan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A 5.8-kb EcoRI chromosomal fragment from Coxiella burnetii functions to initiate plasmid replication in Escherichia coli from a 403-bp minimal autonomous replication sequence (ars) (Chen, 1989). The minimal ars contains motifs found in bacterial origins, including two DnaA boxes, three AT-rich 21-mers, a transcriptional promoter leading rightwards, and potential IHF and FIS binding sites. Database comparisons of deduced amino acid sequences revealed that open reading frames adjacent to ars shared identity to genes often located near bacterial chromosomal origins. These were rpmH, rnpA, 9K, and 60K, in E. coli and Pseudomonas putida. To provide direct evidence for origin function in …
Dna Radioprotection By Aminothiols., Christopher John Kolanko
Dna Radioprotection By Aminothiols., Christopher John Kolanko
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The objective of this study was to determine the dominant mechanism (OH-radical scavenging or non-OH-radical scavenging mechanisms) of radioprotection by the thiol scavenger dithiothreitol (DTT) making comparisons between a cellular and isolated plasmid DNA model systems. The protection mechanism of DTT was determined experimentally by comparing the thiol to known OH-radical scavenging compounds (dimethyl sulfoxide, glycerol and 1,3-dimethyluracil) measuring the relative differences in their protection factor for radiation-induced chromosome aberrations in cells and single-strand break induction in the plasmid DNA model. A follow-up study was conducted comparing radioprotection between DTT and the neutral thiol 2-mercaptoethanol (2ME) to determine the contribution …
The Use Of Fracture Mechanics To Predict The Stress Distribution In Coal Mine Pillars., James Michael Kramer
The Use Of Fracture Mechanics To Predict The Stress Distribution In Coal Mine Pillars., James Michael Kramer
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Because coal resources are dwindling, it is necessary to mine seams that are more difficult to support structurally. The mining industry needs a mine layout that is safe, but designed to be competitive in the world market. Presented in this dissertation is a technique that predicts the stress distribution in coal mine pillars. This approach uses an analytic equation to predict stress and yield characteristics; so, in some respects, it is as accurate as numerical modeling. It uses fracture mechanics to model many structures including longwall gob, yield pillars, cribs, posts, longwall chocks and hydrostatic loads. It models the yield …
Acoustic Emission Monitoring Of Concrete Structures Using Waveguides., Yidong Eddie He
Acoustic Emission Monitoring Of Concrete Structures Using Waveguides., Yidong Eddie He
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study is to develop acoustic waveguides for Acoustic Emission (A.E.) monitoring of concrete structures, in order to overcome the difficulty of high acoustic attenuation in concrete. Solid embedded waveguides, liquid-filled embedded waveguides and solid surface waveguides have been developed in this study. An analytical model of a waveguide with infinitely thick cladding was used to study the wave propagation in an embedded solid waveguide. The analysis revealed the guideline to construct an ideal embedded waveguide with efficient acoustic transmission, that is the existence of a real wavenumber. An embedded waveguide fulfilling the above criterion has not been constructed physically …

The Use Of An Instrumented Breast Model Of The Examination Of Patterns Of Search In Breast Self-Examination., Susan Bragg Leight
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this descriptive pilot study was to evaluate two patterns of search in breast self-examination for the thoroughness of search they engender. An instrumented breast model was developed and piloted for this study. Eight LVDT's were embedded in a silicone breast model. Downward pressure on the breast model resulted in displacement measures which were converted to digital signals through the use of an M102 module. A command software program recorded these displacement measures in a series of files. The research questions for the study addressed the following issues: what was the effect of the vertical strip pattern as …
Political Culture And The Coal Economy In The Upper Monongahela Region: 1776-1933., Michael Edward Workman
Political Culture And The Coal Economy In The Upper Monongahela Region: 1776-1933., Michael Edward Workman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The industrialization of Appalachia traditionally has been understood in terms of the penetration and exploitation of the region by outside capitalists. The role of indigenous capitalists in the development of the coal and other industries has been neglected. Most development studies have focused on the Central portions of Appalachia, virtually ignoring the northern parts of the region, including the Upper Monongahela region of Northern West Virginia. Moreover, most studies of industrialization have focused on the rural, rather than the urban, parts of the region. Furthermore, the study of the role of coal miners and the miners' union (United Mine Workers …

A Biological System For The Dissolution Of Insoluble Phosphate Ores: 2-Ketogluconate Increases The Solubility Of Soil Phosphates., Joanne Marie Scalzitti
A Biological System For The Dissolution Of Insoluble Phosphate Ores: 2-Ketogluconate Increases The Solubility Of Soil Phosphates., Joanne Marie Scalzitti
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The following investigation examined a biological system employing bacterially-derived 2-ketogluconate (2KG) for the dissolution of insoluble soil phosphates. It has been suggested that 2KG solubilizes insoluble soil phosphates by either a reduction in soil pH or by chelating divalent cations. The capability of 2KG derived from Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 to solubilize phosphate ores and the mechanism by which this dissolution occurs were investigated in vitro and in vivo. The dissolution of all three ores was shown to be dose-dependent, non-linear, and not correlated with a significant reduction in pH of the solution. The dissolution of IP and RP resulted in …

The purpose of this investigation was to experimentally examine the enhanced heat transfer and emission reduction characteristics of periodically perturbed annular natural gas flames issuing into a cylindrical cavity. Perturbation modes for the fluidic nozzles included the use of steady, axially oscillating, and radially oscillating annular flames. The testing process involved two phases. Phase one quantified the instantaneous and time averaged heat fluxes and the amount of NOx production from the natural gas flames. For the three nozzle diameters (19 mm, 25.4 mm, and 38.1 mm) tested, the equivalence ratios ranged from 0.6 to 1.0, the pulsation frequencies from steady …
Development Of A Stable Tetrahedral Finite Element For Metal Forming Analysis., V B. Rachakonda
Development Of A Stable Tetrahedral Finite Element For Metal Forming Analysis., V B. Rachakonda
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A nonlinear 'velocity-pressure' mixed finite element formulation for three dimensional rigid-viscoplastic analysis of metal forming problems is presented. It adequately takes into account the nonlinear material behavior and the large deformations that occur during metal forming operations. A ten-noded tetrahedral finite element with a quadratic interpolation in velocity and linear interpolation in pressure is used to discretize the domain of the deforming body. The salient feature of the formulation is the enforcement of the incompressibility requirement necessitated by the use of the rigid-viscoplastic constitutive law by modifying the constitutive equation to include a pressure variable and adding an additional constraint …

Paul Green, Symphonic Drama, And Popular Culture., Carolyn Craft Leech
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Paul Green's symphonic dramas represent a collective memory for and a challenge to American popular culture. Green's artistic insight and dramatic innovation allowed him to applaud that culture and to inform it as he lauded past values of individual vision, courage, and hard work and urged compassionate confirmation of individual dignity. Green recorded features of mass culture, beginning with the people of his own North Carolina origin and eventually embracing the expanse of his country's geography and history. Green celebrated and defended the common man, and he created his literary works (especially his symphonic dramas) to cater to the tastes …
Damage Criteria And Control Measures For Residential Houses Subjected To Longwall Subsidence., Deepak Dutta
Damage Criteria And Control Measures For Residential Houses Subjected To Longwall Subsidence., Deepak Dutta
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
With the increase in production coming from longwall mining, attendant subsidence on the surface is becoming planned but widespread. As a consequence, in the rural USA, residential houses, farmers' barns, grain silos, county roads, small bridges, streams, grazing ground, underground water, pipe lines, and electric transmission towers are subjected to ground subsidence. Out of these structures and renewable resources, disturbances to residential houses caused by longwall mining are becoming a vexing problem for mine operators and house owners. In the backdrop of the above scenario, this dissertation explores two aspects of the issue, i.e. evaluation of damage to residential houses …

Experimental results are reported on the biological atmospheric oxidation of FeS{dollar}\\sb2{dollar} embedded within mine rocks in the presence of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. Three different potentially acid-producing rock samples from different coal seams are used. The rate of FeS{dollar}\\sb2{dollar} conversion or production of acid is studied with respect to sterility and variations in temperature, and particle size. Pore size distributions as well as changes in porosity with conversion have been determined for both inoculated and sterilized samples. It is found, under the same experimental conditions, that the inoculated samples produce five times more acid than the sterilized ones. This is attributed to …
Prediction And Amelioration Of Acid Mine Drainage., Walter Mark Hart
Prediction And Amelioration Of Acid Mine Drainage., Walter Mark Hart
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Two aspects of acid mine drainage (AMD) production were studied on a laboratory scale: the role of leaching, and the effectiveness of phosphate amelioration. The leaching study was based on an assumption of an earlier oxidation/leaching field model: that oxidation is independent of leaching. A SAS program was written which can simultaneously fit all three parameters of this field model. The model was generalized to include the effect of initial sulfate sulfur. A deterministic oxidation/leaching model was developed and applied to two continuous, unsaturated flow trickle bed reactors. First-order leaching rate constants were calculated to be 0.0888 days{dollar}\\sp{lcub}-1{rcub}{dollar} for refuse …
"Losers At The Game?" Male Protagonists In Four Novels Of Henry James., Sandra Rosalynne Woods
"Losers At The Game?" Male Protagonists In Four Novels Of Henry James., Sandra Rosalynne Woods
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study examines the male American protagonists from four of Henry James's major novels, Roderick Hudson, The American, The Bostonians, and The Ambassadors. Considerations of the generic Jamesian hero usually include James's heroines, and numerous works have concentrated on James's female protagonists, but few comparable attempts have been made to focus exclusively on James's male protagonists. Both the dynamic character of James's literary career and the extraordinary range of James's female characters suggest that such a study may be warranted. The scale of modes delineated by Northrop Frye in Anatomy of Criticism provides an archetypal base for this study. Because …

Regulation Of Bone Marrow Stromal Cell Function., Linda Gayle Billips
Regulation Of Bone Marrow Stromal Cell Function., Linda Gayle Billips
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Stromal cells are key components of the hemopoietic microenvironment of the bone marrow and are now known to function as primary regulators of hemopoietic cell production. This study addresses the role of stromal cells in B lymphocyte production. Initial experiments have established that B lymphocyte development is dependent on the presence of a heterogeneous mixture of stromal cells. In addition, recent studies in this and other laboratories have shown that exposure of stromal cells to cytokines alters their production of hemopoietic growth factors and, as a result, their hemopoietic regulatory function. The experiments presented here specifically demonstrate cytokine-induced changes in …
