Citation Analysis And Emerging Technologies: Foundational Technical Developments In Optical Disk Technology., Thomas Tunnell Wrenn Jan 1989

Citation Analysis And Emerging Technologies: Foundational Technical Developments In Optical Disk Technology., Thomas Tunnell Wrenn

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

One reason a given technology emerges is that the technical means of the technology are improved--made more efficient, faster, more reliable. This causes changes in the "socio-technical interface" between the technical means and the organization in which it is applied, and it becomes practical to use the improved technical means in new applications and additional organizations. Technical developments that decisively affect the technical workability and the economic usefulness of a product or process, which permit rapid changes in a technology and its rate of emergence, are termed foundational technical developments (FTDs). We often want to be able to identify which …

The Cost Efficiency And Communication Effects Associated With Brand Name Exposure Within Motion Pictures, Eva Marie Steortz Jan 1987

The Cost Efficiency And Communication Effects Associated With Brand Name Exposure Within Motion Pictures, Eva Marie Steortz

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Brand name products have been making appearances on the silver screen since the beginning of the cinema. Jack Daniels bourbon made its film debut when Joan Crawford served it in the 1945 movie, Mildred Pierce. However, only recently has such a great effort been exerted by those involved in this "advertising" technique. Many credit this growing trend to E.T., Steven Spielberg's lovable little alien creature, who followed a trail of Reese's Pieces to a documented 65 percent increase in sales for the Hershey company in 1982.

Interestingly, there is no research available concerning the communication effects associated with a brand …

Kinetics Of Drug Release From The Polylactic Acid Microcapsules Prepared By A Solvent Partition Method., Nilsuwan Leelarasamee

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A solvent partition technique of microencapsulation, utilizing an apparatus designed to provide a continuous injection of a drug-polymer preparation into a flowing mineral oil system, has been developed via the preparation of hydrocortisone-polylactic acid microcapsules. Using this method, microcapsules of controlled particle size distribution and drug loading were prepared with good reproducibility. Dissolution studies further showed that microcapsules having the same drug loading and particle size distribution exhibited the same rate of release. The drug release profiles, obtained in pH 7.4 phosphate buffer at 37 C, showed a biphasic drug release pattern denoting a fast first-stage and a slow second-stage …

Coal Transportation: A Comparative Spatial Analysis Between Unit Train And Slurry Pipeline (West Virginia)., Masood Soltanmohammadi-Sarab Jan 1986

Coal Transportation: A Comparative Spatial Analysis Between Unit Train And Slurry Pipeline (West Virginia)., Masood Soltanmohammadi-Sarab

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

After the 1973 Arab oil embargo and a drastic price rise in crude oil, the demand for coal and, subsequently, the price of coal rose to a new high, thus encouraging further production of coal. The increase in the production occurred in most of the coal fields of our nation except those in some specific areas, such as West Virginia. Preliminary studies indicate that the high transportation cost of coal contributes to this slacking coal production pattern. Three related objectives are studied in this dissertation: (a) Finding the least cost mode of coal transportation; (b) Determining the new pattern of …

Dissolution Kinetics Of Hydrocortisone Into Polymer Solutions (Steroids)., Nahla Nassar Khoury Jan 1985

Dissolution Kinetics Of Hydrocortisone Into Polymer Solutions (Steroids)., Nahla Nassar Khoury

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A major concern of investigators during the last decade has been the evaluation of the relative therapeutic effectiveness of competitive drug products. The problem of bioavailability is further exaggerated for steroidal drugs formulated as suspensions because of low intrinsic solubility, and the addition of stabilizing ingredients, such as polymers, to the formulations. An in vitro evaluation of the dissolution rate of hydrocortisone alcohol and acetate from constant surface area tablets into dilute polymer solutions was undertaken since dissolution rate is a relevant characteristic concerning therapeutic availability for sparingly soluble drugs. Polymers of varying chemical type and in dilute concentrations, similar …

Development Of Design Criteria For Mechanical Roof Bolting In Underground Coal Mines, David Hsin-Ying Tang Jan 1984

Development Of Design Criteria For Mechanical Roof Bolting In Underground Coal Mines, David Hsin-Ying Tang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In spite of the widespread usage of mechanical roof bolts as a support system in the underground coal mines, the mechanisms by which roof bolts reinforce the mine roof are still not fully understood. The general practices of roof bolting system are largely based on some empirical rules, which tend to either underdesign or overdesign. In order to design the roof bolting system safely and economically, it is essential to understand the flexural behavior of the immediate roof. Based on the strata sequence, the strata in the immediate roof are divided into three types. The flexural behavior of the three …

Today, higher education administration's task is one of unprecedented complexity. The multiple burdens provide sufficient reason for real interest in utilization of effective information systems. Consequently, new functions affecting the production, retention, and delivery of information have emerged. This study is not about the computer as such, but how to use it, what administrative information it can provide, and academically, how to let it serve higher education's purposes more sensitively and beneficially. The immediate and long-term information needs of a selected university were identified under the philosophy that good administrative use of the computer can help preserve educational resources in …

Electromagnetic Geophysical Tomography Incorporating Refraction And Reflection., Roger Dale Radcliff Jan 1982

Electromagnetic Geophysical Tomography Incorporating Refraction And Reflection., Roger Dale Radcliff

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

An accurate technique for remotely determining the internal structure of an object or underground environment would have a significant impact in mining, geoexploration, and the life sciences. This process of resolving the intrinsic properties of an object or environment by the transmission of X-rays or electromagnetic waves through the unknown anomaly is known as reconstructive imaging or tomography. Several efforts have been made to apply tomographical methods to electromagnetic measurements taken between two boreholes on either side of an unknown geophysical structure. However, it became necessary, because of the nature of existing reconstruction methods, to assume a straight-line propagation path …

Effects Of Dopamine Norepinephrine, Serotonin And Estradiol-17-Beta On Secretion Of Luteinizing Hormone And Prolactin In The Ewe., Daniel Robert Deaver Jan 1982

Effects Of Dopamine Norepinephrine, Serotonin And Estradiol-17-Beta On Secretion Of Luteinizing Hormone And Prolactin In The Ewe., Daniel Robert Deaver

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Four studies were conducted to determine effects of dopamine (DA), norepinephrine (NE), serotonin (5-HT) and estradiol-17(beta) on secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) and prolactin (PRL) in ewes. In the first study, tonic and LHRH-induced secretion of LH was affected by intravenous infusion of DA, NE and 5-HT in a dose-dependent manner in ovariectomized ewes. Responses of LH to increasing doses of DA and 5-HT were biphasic and slopes of dose-response curves between catecholamines and 5-HT were opposite. Secretion of PRL was inhibited by DA and NE but not affected by 5-HT. In anestrous ewes no effects of DA, NE and …

The Antioxidant Effects Of Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs And Ketamine Against Polymorphonuclear Myeloperoxidase Dependent Bactericidal Mechanisms As Measured By Luminol-Enhanced Chemiluminescence., Gary Michael Pekoe Jan 1981

The Antioxidant Effects Of Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs And Ketamine Against Polymorphonuclear Myeloperoxidase Dependent Bactericidal Mechanisms As Measured By Luminol-Enhanced Chemiluminescence., Gary Michael Pekoe

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The interaction of myeloperoxidase (MPO) with H(,2)O(,2) and Cl('-) provides a potent cytotoxic/antimicrobial system for polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs). MPO-related cytotoxicity may be associated with the formation of toxic oxidant MPO intermediates, OCl('-), or both. MPO itself is able to oxidize drugs and cellular components. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) able to act as antioxidant free radical scavengers are shown in this study to inhibit luminol-enhanced chemiluminescence (CL) which results from the MPO-H(,2)O(,2)-Cl('-) interaction. CL is a measure of the production of oxygen-centered free radicals by this reaction. The source of CL which these NSAIDs affect is not OCl('-), once thought to …

The Rebec: An Orthographic And Iconographic Study. (Volumes I And Ii)., Margaret Anne Downie Jan 1981

The Rebec: An Orthographic And Iconographic Study. (Volumes I And Ii)., Margaret Anne Downie

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Most musical instruments of Western European culture have been studied and defined; however, no systematic study has yet been made for the instrument commonly known as the rebec (or rebeck). General reference sources and musicological studies which mention the rebec often provide discrepant, vague, and erroneous information. The current interest in the performance of Medieval and Renaissance music and the reproduction of instruments upon which this music might have been played has created a need, among performers and instrument makers, for specific, primary source information concerning the rebec. The use of the rebec in Western Europe can be documented through …

Simulation Of Hydraulic Fracturing Of Coal., Subhotosh Khan Jan 1981

Simulation Of Hydraulic Fracturing Of Coal., Subhotosh Khan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The parameters affecting the hydrofracturing of coal were investigated through laboratory experiments and theoretical analyses. Effects of (i) fluid flow rate, (ii) confining stresses, (iii) orientation of material axes, and (iv) fluid viscosity were studied experimentally. Equations relating the ultimate tensile strength of coal as a function of confining stresses were developed. The expressions for crack tip stresses around a crack in an anisotropic material were used along with the results of previously performed experiments to show that the maximum normal stress criterion should be used in the fracture mechanics model of Pittsburgh coal. A computer simulation technique for crack …

Thermo-Mechanical Responses For Porous-Permeable Media With Applications To Underground Coal Gasification., Kang Yong Lee Jan 1978

Thermo-Mechanical Responses For Porous-Permeable Media With Applications To Underground Coal Gasification., Kang Yong Lee

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A two-dimensional crack/cavity thermo-mechanical-elastic loading model for characterizing the response of porous—permeable media is developed. The stress and displacement field expressions for this formulated model, with a general elliptic crack/cavity shape, are derived by using the complex variable approach for twodimensional thermo-elastic problems. The critical loading criteria for crack-closure are expressed in terms of the applied stresses and temperature gradient and the mechanisms for line crack-closure are determined from these conditions. Expressions for the contact normal stress and frictional shear stress are analytically developed by extending McClintock and Walsh's crack-closing concept to thermo-mechanical loads. The stress intensity factors for a …

Structural And Mechanistic Studies Of Tricyclo(4.1.0.0(2,7))Heptanes Containing Bridgehead Group-Iva Metal Substituents., Subramanian Chandrasekaran Jan 1977

Structural And Mechanistic Studies Of Tricyclo(4.1.0.0(2,7))Heptanes Containing Bridgehead Group-Iva Metal Substituents., Subramanian Chandrasekaran

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The results of the acid-catalyzed (0.001 M H+ ) methanolysis of 30 are quite significant because they indicate that the methanolysis of 30 in neutral or basic media must involve the formation of a pentacoordinate intermediate by a pathway involving the initial attack of methoxide ion on J30, The intermediate then reacts with two molecules of methanol (regenerating a methoxide ion) to produce a hydrogen-bonded species which decomposes to products via a sixcentered transition state in a rate-determining step.
