Electromagnetic Wave Propagation Within A Subsurface Coal Seam For In Situ Gasification Application., John Joseph Holmes

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The development of an efficient underground coal gasification process may become an important step in achieving energy selfsufficiency. To realize the benefits of the underground coal gasification process, an electromagnetic monitoring system must be developed to convey information about the status of the gasification process. To aid in the design of the monitoring system an electromagnetic model of the underground coal gasification process is formulated, which will prove beneficial in the saving of time and cost in the research and development stages of the system. Two types of electromagnetic systems are investigated analytically and proposed for the monitoring of the …

The Occurrence Of Prototheca In Nature., Edward Allen Barnett Jan 1976

The Occurrence Of Prototheca In Nature., Edward Allen Barnett

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Prototheca Isolation Medium (PIM) was proven to be effective in selectively isolating Prototheca, even from heavily contaminated natural sources. Measurements of the autospores of 125 isolates of Prototheca indicated that there might exist two sub-genera, one with small autospores and one with large autospores. The addition of one percent sodium acetate to PIM resulted in a medium that inhibited the growth of isolates of the small spored sub-genus while allowing isolates of the large spored sub-genus to grow normally. A survey of various environmental habitats showed that Prototheca was common in aquatic habitats such as streams and sewage. The largest …

Optimization Of Coal Gasification Processes For Synthetic Natural Gas Production., Charles Tsun-Hsiung Li

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The second section of the questionnaire assessed West Virginia Home Economists about a number of items affecting the future of home economics„ A majority supported the notion that home economics should emphasize energy management and about half of them believed this involvement would have great social impact. WVHEA respondents were not united on the idea of integrating knowledge from several disciplines as compared to strengthening specialization. They were divided on the idea of using process problem analysis and solutions in lieu of the specialized, subject matter approach to content. The WVHEA respondents agreed solidly that food and clothing labs should …

Optimization Of An Electromagnetic 'Through-The-Earth' Communication System., Gene Edward Layman Jan 1972

Optimization Of An Electromagnetic 'Through-The-Earth' Communication System., Gene Edward Layman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This document reports a research effort directed at compiling the field theory, noise theory, and communication theory necessary to perform systems analysis and optimization of an electromagnetic communication system for use within a mine. The field equations and power transfer between loops placed in an infinite, homogeneous, lossy medium is examined and relationships between parameters are determined that provide optimum transfer of signal power. This analysis is extended to cover the case of an infinite, homogeneous, lossy half-space used to model the actual mining situation. Approximate solutions are found to greatly simplify systems analysis. Noise, bandwidth, false alarm rate, missed …

An Examination Of Nonverbal And Verbal Instructional Guidelines In Students Developing Abstract Understanding Of Technical Concepts., Everett Nelson Israel Jan 1972

An Examination Of Nonverbal And Verbal Instructional Guidelines In Students Developing Abstract Understanding Of Technical Concepts., Everett Nelson Israel

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

At the present time, coherent optical sources exist as discrete components rather than as fully integratable systems. Thus the most pressing problem in the area of integrated optics is the coupling problem: How to excite and, subsequently, recover optical signals which are processed in an integrated circuit. This input and output coupling must be done efficiently.

Equivalence Of Personality Structure In Leary's Interpersonal System Of Diagnosis., James Leroy Truckenmiller Jan 1971

Equivalence Of Personality Structure In Leary's Interpersonal System Of Diagnosis., James Leroy Truckenmiller

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Leary system of interpersonal diagnosis was introduced in its entirety during 1957 as a descriptive alternative to traditional psychiatric assessment involving interpersonal behavior. It attempts to provide a conceptual and measurement framework by removing rating discrepancies among data sources from the realm of undesirable distortions vis-a-vis "True" traits, and by relating these discrepancies to processes such as conflict and identification in an operational fashion. The basic premise supporting operational definitions such as conflict and identification requires that the structural interrelations of interpersonal variables be similar regardless of the data source from which obtained. If this premise were to hold, …

Organized in March 1936 at a convention in Buffalo, New York, the Nazi-inspired German American Bund began its short and stormy existence by seeking to unite the entire German American community under its direction. The Bund had been preceded by numerous Nazi splinter groups and an organization known as the Friends of the New Germany. The chief distinction between the Bund and its predecessors was the requirement that only American citizens could hold leadership positions in the organization. The Bund also tried to be more circumspect in its relations with Nazi agencies in Germany. In its effort to unite the …

Alkylation Of Nitroaromatic Compounds With Sulfur Ylids., Gregorio Cruz Pedroza Jan 1968

Alkylation Of Nitroaromatic Compounds With Sulfur Ylids., Gregorio Cruz Pedroza

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In a study with variation of the ylid-nitrobenzene ratio and subsequent treatment with air, the optimum reaction conditions for the methylation of nitrobenzene with dimethyloxosulfonium ylid were found to be an 8-fold molar excess of methylid over nitrobenzene, and initial reaction for 15 minutes in an atmosphere of nitrogen, followed IX by passing air through the reaction mixture for 5 hours prior to work-up. With these experimental conditions the nitrotoluene yield was increased from 17$ to 40–50$, dialkylation was observed, and essentially no nitrobenzene was recovered.
