Moment Form And Joseph Schwantner's "Aftertones Of Infinity"., Michael D. Albaugh Jan 2004

Moment Form And Joseph Schwantner's "Aftertones Of Infinity"., Michael D. Albaugh

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This document represents the first comprehensive analysis of Joseph Schwantner's Aftertones of Infinity as an example of moment form. Exploring Stockhausen's description of moment form and its recent interpretations in Jonathan Kramer's discussion of moment time, this paper will investigate Schwantner's Aftertones by focusing on its eighteen moments. The analysis will define these moments by their underlying static harmonies, fixed tempos, and consistency of textures, melodies, and rhythmic materials. This paper will further demonstrate that the musical meaning of the piece would remain unchanged even if its defined moments were reordered. An alternate ordering of the moments demonstrates to the …

Internationalizing An Institution: An Emerging Model Of Effective Leadership, Infrastructure And Cultural Factors., Amelia Davis Courts

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

As the United States continues to play a leadership role in the international arena, it depends on the higher education sector to prepare capable leaders who can be guiding forces in the international economic, political, and social environments of the twenty-first century (National Association of State and Land Grant Universities, 2000). This is the ultimate goal of international education. Although current literature clearly describes the benefits of internationalizing higher education, there are few studies that describe how it can be successfully implemented at the institutional level. Using a qualitative, grounded theory approach, this study examined the factors that contributed to …

Effect Of Temperature Variations On Premature Cracking Of Dowel Jointed Concrete Pavements, Gergis W. William Aug 2003

Effect Of Temperature Variations On Premature Cracking Of Dowel Jointed Concrete Pavements, Gergis W. William

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Dowel jointed concrete pavements exhibit premature top-down transverse cracking at mid slab leading to a dramatic decrease in pavement service life. In the past, such cracks were attributed to combined stresses caused by the temperature differential through the slab thickness and heavy vehicle joint loading. This reasoning failed to explain transverse cracking of Palmdale, California slabs (developed before opening the pavement to traffic ) as well as the transverse cracks on I-80 in Pennsylvania, USA that appeared after one to two years of construction. In this study nonlinear 3D Finite Element (3DFE) analysis that includes detailed consideration of slab constraints …

Non-Native Esl Teachers' Reactions To Students' Different Cultural Backgrounds In Classroom Interaction, Livia Silva Lirio Aug 2003

Non-Native Esl Teachers' Reactions To Students' Different Cultural Backgrounds In Classroom Interaction, Livia Silva Lirio

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

There have been research studies done in the area of cross-cultural analysis that discuss the necessity of culture-oriented examiners or assessors as well as "culture-free testing" when assessing students from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Despite evidence that "culture-bias" is present in oral examinations, few of the studies found directly approach the instructors' reactions to students' different cultural and backgrounds in classroom interaction. Therefore the purpose of this exploratory study was to investigate teachers' perspectives on teaching in a multicultural classroom. The findings of this study conducted in an American language institute with non-native ESL teachers reveal a mismatch between …

Teachers' Perceptions Of Communicative Language Teaching Use In Brazil, Marina Bandeira Aleixo May 2003

Teachers' Perceptions Of Communicative Language Teaching Use In Brazil, Marina Bandeira Aleixo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) has been extensively discussed and researched. However little appears in the literature about CLT use in EFL environments, such as Brazil. Few studies explore CLT adaptation in EFL environments, and if they do, such studies are mostly in Asian countries (Li, 1998; Burnaby & Sun, 1998). This research investigates CLT use in high schools and language institutes in Southern Brazil. The data consists of written questionnaires, class observations, and in-depth interviews with teachers. Results showed that there are two main problems with CLT use in Brazil. One relates to the various constraints that exist in each …

How Do Adult Beginning Spanish Students Perceive Their Teacher's Written Feedback On Their Compositions?, Flavia Aoni Costa

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Most of the literature on written feedback to date has attended to feedback techniques and the effects of such approaches on students' writing skills. Little emphasis has been placed on students' perspectives on teachers' written feedback. For this reason, the present study investigated how adult beginning students react to their teacher's written feedback on their Spanish compositions. The study used qualitative methods of data collection---questionnaires for the students, interviews with teachers and students and participant observations---in order to explore their reactions and perceptions. The findings show that the general positive reaction students had in relation to their teacher's written feedback …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Shadypine Middle School has recently implemented what they called a Teaching-for-Tolerance initiative designed to help all students become tolerant of cultural perspectives. This initiative involved teachers adding multicultural education to current curricula to show students groups of people who were discriminated and prejudiced against and their reaction to the discrimination and prejudice. Since teachers are using multicultural education as a base for this initiative, this study investigates how the tolerance initiative illustrates or exemplifies levels of multicultural education as described by Sonia Nieto. This study also investigates what the reactions of the parents and students are. This qualitative study employed …

Affective Factors In Second Language Acquisition: A Critical Review Of The Literature., Laura M. Yokochi Jan 2003

Affective Factors In Second Language Acquisition: A Critical Review Of The Literature., Laura M. Yokochi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Learning a second language is fundamentally different from child language development as well as from the study of other academic disciplines. One reason may be that the study of a second language involves the emotions and the identity in a way other subjects do not. Schumann (1998) argues that emotion filters all learning and cognition. If this is true then the study of affective factors in second language learning is important. What research has been done in this area and what does it show? The purpose of this paper is to conduct a critical review of empirical studies on the …

The Mechanisms Of Ethanol-Induced Damage To The Developing Cerebellum: Effects On The Cerebellar Granule Cells., Zheng Li Jan 2003

The Mechanisms Of Ethanol-Induced Damage To The Developing Cerebellum: Effects On The Cerebellar Granule Cells., Zheng Li

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Alcohol exposure causes developmental abnormality known as Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), featured with central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction. The cerebellum is vulnerable to ethanol toxicity. Developmental exposure to ethanol depletes the number of cerebellar granule cells; however, the underlying mechanisms are unknown. A potential mechanism for ethanol-induced neuronal depletion is to reduce the pool of neuronal progenitors. The progression of the cell cycle is regulated by a family of protein kinases called cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs). We hypothesize that ethanol interferes with the CDK system and disrupts the cell cycle kinetics in cerebellar granule progenitors (CGPs). Pregnant rats were fed ad …

Parent Involvement And The Beginning Teacher: The Story Of Three Elementary Educators., Willard Michael Martin Jan 2003

Parent Involvement And The Beginning Teacher: The Story Of Three Elementary Educators., Willard Michael Martin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Numerous studies conclude that parent involvement in education benefits student achievement and improves the overall quality of schools. However, limited descriptive evidence exists that beginning teachers are being acculturated to parent involvement. The voice of the beginning teacher is relatively silent in the parent involvement literature. Such information could provide school leaders with deeper insight into the impact of parent involvement experiences on beginning teachers and the apparent gulf that exists between preservice training and parent involvement skills required of beginning teachers. The case study approach was used to provide a description of how three beginning, elementary classroom teachers experienced …

Making Instructional Decisions: What Teacher Specialists Decide About And Do For Middle School Students With Reading Difficulty., Frances Laurel Boyd Jan 2003

Making Instructional Decisions: What Teacher Specialists Decide About And Do For Middle School Students With Reading Difficulty., Frances Laurel Boyd

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Concern about the efficacy of American education programs in reading is noted. Amid conflicting reports of what is wrong with American schools, steps must be taken which allow for growth among reading educators, especially those who work with older students who have not yet achieved grade appropriate reading skills. However, those who provide support programs need a body of information which allows them to address real needs that teachers have. The voice of teachers is under represented in program planning, yet could provide information crucial to the development of the most beneficial training and support programs. This study investigated the …

Analyzing the program content from forty-nine interpretive talks and writing examples submitted to the IDP for review from July to November of 2001, the researcher has identified four interpretive strategies interpreters used in developing opportunities for intellectual and emotional connections with …

The Future Of Electronic Editing: Theory And Practice., Hilary M. Attfield Jan 2003

The Future Of Electronic Editing: Theory And Practice., Hilary M. Attfield

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation investigates the theory and practice of editing as it moves into the electronic era. As an example of the type of material which scholars may now be interested in working with, it centers on an edition of a lecture given by the West Virginia artist-journalist David Hunter Strother on John Brown nine years after the insurrection at Harper's Ferry. This material was chosen because it was locally available, unpublished, both locally and nationally important, and of the dimension which would have formerly placed it on the margin of paper publication. Chapter one shows how the theory of editing …

A Study Of Selected Songs By Leonard Bernstein Which Reflect His Contribution To The Evolution Of Art Song In America., Yugo Sava Ikach

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Within American vocal art music of the twentieth century, there has been an infusion of non-traditional musical traits. Some of these characteristics and idioms find their roots in American popular music and jazz. Although this phenomenon has been met with a certain amount of opposition, its presence is undeniable. The success and acceptance of this blending of styles owes much to the work of Leonard Bernstein. This paper examines a selection of Leonard Bernstein's vocal songs that in some way demonstrate this blending of styles, and notes influence of his opinions via mass media exposure. Tone Classification Of Syllable -Segmented Thai Speech Based On Multilayer Perceptron, Nuttavudh Satravaha May 2002

Tone Classification Of Syllable -Segmented Thai Speech Based On Multilayer Perceptron, Nuttavudh Satravaha

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Thai is a monosyllabic and tonal language. Thai makes use of tone to convey lexical information about the meaning of a syllable. Thai has five distinctive tones and each tone is well represented by a single F0 contour pattern. In general, a Thai syllable with a different tone has a different lexical meaning. Thus, to completely recognize a spoken Thai syllable, a speech recognition system has not only to recognize a base syllable but also to correctly identify a tone. Hence, tone classification of Thai speech is an essential part of a Thai speech recognition system.;In this study, a tone …
