A Description Of The Sound System Of Misiones Mbya, Matias N. De Paula
A Description Of The Sound System Of Misiones Mbya, Matias N. De Paula
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Misiones Mbya is an indigenous language of South America spoken by the Mbya people in the Province of Misiones, Argentina. Although there are several studies in the literature about the Brazilian variety of this language, the linguistic information available about Misiones Mbya is extremely scarce. In this thesis I present a segmental analysis of the language (individual vowels and consonants) and a prosodic analysis of nasal harmony based on field data collected in three different communities in Misiones. The segmental analysis shows that this variety is very similar to the Brazilian variety of the language with only a few exceptions. …
Platform Gratifications: Tinder Vs. Match.Com, Cassandra Lang
Platform Gratifications: Tinder Vs. Match.Com, Cassandra Lang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis examined user's experiences using dating applications by applying a uses and gratifications lens to investigate the gratifications of two different dating platforms. Specifically, this study drew upon past computer-mediated research to compare the gratifications obtained from a Tinder-like platform and a Match.com-like platform. The experiment found no significant differences between the gratifications levels of the two platforms types. However, female participants reported significantly lower levels of the "relaxation" gratification levels then males. The study also found identical ordinal gratification levels for the two platforms explored. The findings expand the study of mobile dating applications.
Radioactive Masculinity: How The Anxious Postcolonial Learnt To Love And Live In Fear Of The Nuclear Bomb, Dibyadyuti Roy
Radioactive Masculinity: How The Anxious Postcolonial Learnt To Love And Live In Fear Of The Nuclear Bomb, Dibyadyuti Roy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Radioactive Masculinity explores how the Cold War legacy, of nuclear weapons finding resonance in images of white maleness and masculinity, results in anxious hypermasculine performances. These discursive and physical masculine acts contingent on the symbolic and material power of nuclear weapons, I argue, represent radioactive masculinity, a form of hegemonic militarized masculinity, which is intrinsically linked to the concept of nationhood and sovereignty. This idealized masculinity is fluid and cannot be tangibly or materially realized, much like the constantly decaying radioactive bomb on which it is modeled. Through analyzing a wide range of artifacts from America and India, I show …
Effect Of Narrative Structure Of Animated Movies On Esl Learners' Recall And Comprehension Of Stories, Noriza Abu Hassan Shaari
Effect Of Narrative Structure Of Animated Movies On Esl Learners' Recall And Comprehension Of Stories, Noriza Abu Hassan Shaari
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study aimed at expanding the examination of a narrative structure by using short 2D short animated movies in an ESL learning (L2) environment. Employing an experimental design, this study investigated whether there was an effect of narrative structure that was sequenced in a linear, a simple non-linear and a complex non-linear manner on ESL learners' recall and comprehension of stories. The independent between-groups ANOVA yielded a statistically significant effect on recall and comprehension. As a summary, the result of this investigation found that there was an effect of narrative structure of animated movies on ESL learners' recall and comprehension …
Effects Of Executive Functioning On False Memory In Children, Pamela Swift Tessier
Effects Of Executive Functioning On False Memory In Children, Pamela Swift Tessier
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Misremembering is a common phenomenon in normal human development that has great potential to become problematic, especially in legal situations. The Deese/Roediger--McDermott (DRM; Deese, 1959; Roediger & McDermott, 1995) model has been commonly used in the literature to uncover mechanisms for why these false memories may occur. Children have only recently begun to be investigated using this paradigm. Some related mechanisms in children for false recollection that have yet to be investigated are child executive functioning and socioeconomic status. In the current study, executive functioning was investigated as a potential mechanism for false recollections using a DRM paradigm. Children completed …
Music Videos As Meaningful Entertainment? Psychological Responses To Audio-Visual Presentations Of Song Narratives, Lea Margarete Schlue
Music Videos As Meaningful Entertainment? Psychological Responses To Audio-Visual Presentations Of Song Narratives, Lea Margarete Schlue
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Combining auditive, visual, and textual elements in a unique way, music videos are currently one of the most popular and viral forms of entertainment media. Narrative music videos, in particular, engage their viewers by visually communicating the meaning of a song and its lyrics, which possibly employs them as a useful tool to communicate social, political and cultural messages to a broad audience, and implicates their social and cultural relevance. The purpose of this study was to test whether visual presentations of song narratives (as in music videos) foster a more transporting, engaging, enjoyable, and appreciative entertainment experience than listening …
Communicative Solutions Through Technology: An Evaluation Of Esl Textbooks In Brazil, Natalia De Souza Sterci
Communicative Solutions Through Technology: An Evaluation Of Esl Textbooks In Brazil, Natalia De Souza Sterci
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Textbooks are the main tools used by teachers and students in English as a Second Language/ English as a Foreign Language (ESL/EFL) teaching settings; Therefore, it is important to select the most appropriate textbook that meets both teachers' and students' needs. This study examines three textbooks commonly used in Brazilian private schools: New Interchange (Richards, 2000), American Headway 1 (Soars & Soars, 2001), and Top Notch 1 (Saslow & Ascher, 2006), all of which are published by non-Brazilian companies, to see how well they address the urgent need for communication-based EFL textbooks in Brazil. The current study seeks to help …
Measuring And Changing Preschool Children's Stuttering Attitudes, Mary E. Weidner
Measuring And Changing Preschool Children's Stuttering Attitudes, Mary E. Weidner
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Background: Negative or uninformed stuttering attitudes proliferate among the general public, and burgeoning research has shown that such attitudes might emerge as early as the preschool years. Despite decades of research on the topic, much remains unknown about the origin of stuttering attitudes and the factors that bear on their development. Moreover, conclusive recommendations to improve attitudes toward stuttering have yet to be advanced.;Purpose: This study sought (a) to objectively measure stuttering attitudes among preschool children, (b) to examine predictive factors that might account for those attitudes, and (c) to determine the effect of a new educational program on improving …
Encounters With The Avant-Garde: Four Case Studies In The Reception History Of Contemporary Flute Works (1971 To Present), Amanda Cook
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Using reception history as a historiographical lens, this study traces the development and maturation of critical language used to describe selected flute works from 1971 to present that include extended playing techniques in addition to theatrical elements specified by the composer. Only English-language documentation is examined, and the majority of these items are reviews. The works used as case studies are George Crumb's Vox Balaenae (1971), Toru Takemitsu's Voice (1971), Karlheinz Stockhausen's Flautina (1989), and Marcos Balter's Descent from Parnassus (2012).;The purpose of this study is two-fold: 1) Define the role of temporality in relation to the developmental arc of …
A Communion Of Churches: Indian Christians, English Ministers, And Congregations In New England, 1600-1775, Gregory Alan Michna
A Communion Of Churches: Indian Christians, English Ministers, And Congregations In New England, 1600-1775, Gregory Alan Michna
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation advances the study of New England's religious history by exploring the complex and contested religious discourse surrounding puritan ecclesiology and the conceptual place of Native Americans within physical and imagined communities. While relations between puritan missionaries such as John Eliot and Thomas Mayhew and early "Praying Indians," or Indian Christians, have been closely studied, this work draws attention to the importance of theology and religious discourse in realms like hermeneutics, ecclesiology, and eschatology in shaping the nature of these exchanges. Despite communal and cultural differences, religious culture frequently served as a means of bridging these gaps to foster …
The Impact Of Rural Contexts On Citizenship Education, Eric D. Moffa
The Impact Of Rural Contexts On Citizenship Education, Eric D. Moffa
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Social studies teachers are sensitive to local school and community values and, therefore, tactful when making decisions about their curriculum (Romanowski, 1996; Shaver, Davis, & Helburn, 1980; Thornton, 1989), including its citizenship aims (Saada, 2013; Sondel, 2015; Vinson, 1998). For this reason, scholars call for better contextual understandings of teachers' curricular-instructional gatekeeping (Thornton, 1989; Vinson, 1998). Rural-specific examples of this phenomenon remain largely unexamined (Martin & Chiodo, 2007; Pattison-Meek, 2012), though rural schools make up 32.9% of all schools in the United States (Johnson, Showalter, Klein, & Lester, 2014) and rural communities offer distinct socio-geographic and socio-cultural contexts (Brown & …
Safe Semi-Supervised Learning With Sparse Graphs, Prithish Banerjee
Safe Semi-Supervised Learning With Sparse Graphs, Prithish Banerjee
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
There has been substantial interest from both computer science and statistics in developing methods for graph-based semi-supervised learning. The attraction to the area involves several challenging applications brought forth from academia and industry where little data are available with training responses while lots of data are available overall. Ample evidence has demonstrated the value of several of these methods on real data applications, but it should be kept in mind that they heavily rely on some smoothness assumptions. The general frame- work for graph-based semi-supervised learning is to optimize a smooth function over the nodes of the proximity graph constructed …
Laugh With Me: Effects Of Shortcoms On Students' Motivation, Confidence, And Cultural Understanding In The French Classroom, Juliette Duthoit
Laugh With Me: Effects Of Shortcoms On Students' Motivation, Confidence, And Cultural Understanding In The French Classroom, Juliette Duthoit
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Research has shown that authentic audio-visual materials have had a positive effect in foreign language classroom on learners' motivation and their confidence. Studies have also shown that humor can aid learners' memorization and improve their motivation, whether it is used in course material or through the instructor's interaction with the learners. Few researchers have focused, however, on the effect of humorous audio-visual material on foreign language learning. The aim of this thesis is to research the effects of humor in authentic video programming on the learning of French. In particular it examines the genre of the shortcom and how its …

An Analysis And Validation Of An Online Photographic Identity Exposure Evaluation System, Elliott V. Iannello
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The rapid growth in volume over the last decade of personal photos placed online due to the advent of social media has made users highly susceptible to malicious forms of attack. A system was proposed and constructed using Open Source technologies capable of acquiring the necessary data to conduct a measurement of online photographic exposure to aid in assessing a user's digital privacy. The system's effectiveness at providing feedback on the level of exposure was tested by using a controlled set of three subjects. Each subject provided three training photos each that simulated what would be easily ascertainable from social …
Semi-Supervised And Active Learning Models For Software Fault Prediction, Huihua Lu
Semi-Supervised And Active Learning Models For Software Fault Prediction, Huihua Lu
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
As software continues to insinuate itself into nearly every aspect of our life, the quality of software has been an extremely important issue. Software Quality Assurance (SQA) is a process that ensures the development of high-quality software. It concerns the important problem of maintaining, monitoring, and developing quality software. Accurate detection of fault prone components in software projects is one of the most commonly practiced techniques that offer the path to high quality products without excessive assurance expenditures. This type of quality modeling requires the availability of software modules with known fault content developed in similar environment. However, collection of …
The Effect Of Direct Instruction On Spanish Language Acquisition In A Preschool Free-Play Environment: A Single-Case Design, Lucy Rose Scotti
The Effect Of Direct Instruction On Spanish Language Acquisition In A Preschool Free-Play Environment: A Single-Case Design, Lucy Rose Scotti
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The predicted increase in Spanish speakers within the United States brings to light a new direction for preschool curricula. There are multiple, on-going arguments about the best time for children to learn a second language and what role critical periods for brain development play in second language acquisition. Although there are individual differences in development, the current study demonstrates that children can learn Spanish vocabulary words with an average of 30 minutes of instruction per week. Using a combination of direct instruction with developmentally appropriate practices, hands-on, and engaging activities, the teaching of Spanish vocabulary, themed and age appropriate for …
Does Self Love Lead To Spying On Ex-Partners On Facebook? The Examination Of Ego Factors In Facebook Stalking, Brittany Furbee
Does Self Love Lead To Spying On Ex-Partners On Facebook? The Examination Of Ego Factors In Facebook Stalking, Brittany Furbee
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study aims to identify predictable personality traits that can influence ones likelihood to stalk an ex-partner on Facebook. Particularly, the study focuses on the traits related with self-concept, given that motivations of using social network sites (SNS) are highly associated with self-concept. This includes self-esteem, two types of narcissism (grandiose and vulnerable narcissism), and self-efficacy. Furthermore, in order to better assess the predictability of these factors, this study considers other control variables while assessing predictability of personality traits, such as Facebook usage, length of the relationship, and time since the break- up, drawing from both social psychology and SNS …
The Anti-Imperialist Empire: Soviet Nationality Policies Under Brezhnev, Jason A. Roberts
The Anti-Imperialist Empire: Soviet Nationality Policies Under Brezhnev, Jason A. Roberts
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation argues that the Soviet Union functioned as an empire despite its decidedly anti-imperialist rhetoric. Beginning in the 1920s, Bolshevik policies transformed the former Russian Empire into a new type of empire that was based on Marxist-Leninist ideology. Moreover, the Bolshevik policy of korenizatsiia as well as Marxist-Leninist rhetoric promoted the development of a decolonization process among the non-Russian peoples of the USSR in the 1920s and 1930s. Although Stalin abandoned korenizatsiia in the 1930s in favor of greater emphasis on Russification, the decolonization process continued into the Brezhnev period of the 1960s and 1970s. This decolonization process quickly …
Against The Thalassocracy: Sacred Geography, Nationhood And Perennial Traditionalism In Alexander Dugin's Neo-Eurasianist Philosophy, Jonathan Rushbrook
Against The Thalassocracy: Sacred Geography, Nationhood And Perennial Traditionalism In Alexander Dugin's Neo-Eurasianist Philosophy, Jonathan Rushbrook
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis discusses the ideological makeup of the Russian right wing philosopher Alexander Dugin's and his conceptualization of race and nation in his Neo-Eurasianist imperial project. Tracing Dugin's ideological influences from early Eurasianism, the European New Right and esoteric religious beliefs such as Perennial Traditionalism, the thesis then goes on to place Dugin's body of thought within a larger debate on defining fascism and whether Dugin can be considered a fascist. Ultimately this thesis contests some scholars' interpretations of Dugin's worldview as a fundamentally ethnocentric or even racist Russian nationalism. Rather, by examining Dugin's writings on nation through an ethno-symbolist …

Communicating To Resolve The "Mommy Wars": Testing Communicated Stereotypes And The Common Ingroup Identity Model With Stay-At-Home And Working Mothers, Kelly G. Odenweller
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Toward empirically validating motherhood as an intergroup context and uncovering communicative solutions to resolving the cultural "mommy wars," the goal of this dissertation was to test foundational intergroup communication theories with stay-at-home mothers (SAHMs) and working mothers (WMs) across two independent experiments. In Study One, participant SAHMs and WMs (N = 529) reported on their outgroup attitudes, affective responses (i.e., contempt, admiration, envy, and pity), behavioral responses (i.e., active/passive facilitation, active/passive harm), intergroup anxiety, and willingness to communicate after viewing a description of a target SAHM or WM designed in accordance with the most prevalent stereotypes of SAHMs and WMs …
The Use Of Cultural Memory In Reinforcing Contemporary Russian Patriotism: A Case Study Of The Film "Stalingrad" (2013), Laura Roop
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
According to cultural memory theory, cultural tools such as texts and symbols transmit the knowledge of meaningful historical events to groups. These cultural tools reproduce history by cultivating narratives that are relevant in a given time, and thus reflect the ongoing concerns over memory. The purpose of communicating significant turning points in a nation's history is to create a system of values, a self-image and the continuity of a nation. Films are considered to be both textual and visual representations of cultural memory. Since memory and commemoration of the Second World War have gone through many changes, one has to …

Maopewa Iati Bi: Takai Tonqyayun Monyton "To Abandon So Beautiful A Dwelling": Indians In The Kanawha-New River Valley, 1500-1755, Isaac J. Emrick
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Maopewa iati bi is a Tutelo translation of William Byrd's eighteenth century quote "To abandon so beautiful a Dwelling." The quotes sets the stage for this examination of the indigenous landscape history of the eastern half of the Middle Ohio River Valley. The region, or Okahok amai, was the homeland of Siouan speakers, but passed from Siouan control into Iroquoian and Algonquian hands around turn of the eighteenth century. Not long afterward Indians, pressured by British and French citizens and governments, were forced to again fight to maintain their hard won new homes. By the middle of the eighteenth century, …
Party Systems, Democratization And Governance In Africa: Aligning Theory And Praxis Using Sierra Leone As A Case Study, Mohamed Saffa Lamin
Party Systems, Democratization And Governance In Africa: Aligning Theory And Praxis Using Sierra Leone As A Case Study, Mohamed Saffa Lamin
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
There has been an upsurge in the movement towards democracy in developing countries since the end of the Cold War, which has led former autocratic regimes to embrace values of good governance as they transition to democracy (Huntington, 1991: 21-26). Democratic triumphalism has even led some scholars to declare the "end of history" due to the absence of alternative political systems that rival Western democracy (Fukuyama, 2006). The so-called "third wave" of democratization has been aided by multilateral institutions, international aid agencies and Western democratic governments, which since the 1990s have used democratization and good governance as collateral for foreign …
Performing Placeslessness: Early American Drama And The Liminal State, 1775-1859, James R. Holsinger
Performing Placeslessness: Early American Drama And The Liminal State, 1775-1859, James R. Holsinger
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In Performing Placeslessness, I argue that the lack of a consistent attachment to place--the geopathology that manifests in the problem of placelessness---contributed to the incoherence of American identity from the Revolutionary War through the mid-nineteenth century. In making this argument, I bridge the critical gap between Martin Brueckner's description of the geographic revolution (late-seventeenth to mid-eighteenth century) and Una Chaudhuri's Staging Place, in which she characterizes place as a problem in modern realist drama. Examining dramatic publications and performances from 1775-1859, I treat drama as a key site of negotiating problematic conceptions of space and place in America. This period …
The Making Of Natal: Defensive Institutions And State Formation In Nineteenth Century Southern Africa, Jacob Mckinnon Ivey
The Making Of Natal: Defensive Institutions And State Formation In Nineteenth Century Southern Africa, Jacob Mckinnon Ivey
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation establishes an understanding of how the defensive institutions of the colony of Natal were formed in the context of the emerging British Empire in Southern Africa during the mid-nineteenth century, the parameters of their organization, and their contributions and influences to the institutions which characterized Natal as a colonial state. Paying particular attention to the organization of colonial defence, including the complexities of African contributions to colonial rule and white solutions to questions of security and defence in the emerging colonial state of Natal, a clearer picture of the manner in which Natal defined itself and its place …
Control Design And Performance Analysis For Autonomous Formation Flight Experimentss, Caleb Michael Rice
Control Design And Performance Analysis For Autonomous Formation Flight Experimentss, Caleb Michael Rice
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Autonomous Formation Flight is a key approach for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and managing traffic in future high density airspace. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV's) have made it possible for the physical demonstration and validation of autonomous formation flight concepts inexpensively and eliminates the flight risk to human pilots. This thesis discusses the design, implementation, and flight testing of three different formation flight control methods, Proportional Integral and Derivative (PID); Fuzzy Logic (FL); and NonLinear Dynamic Inversion (NLDI), and their respective performance behavior. Experimental results show achievable autonomous formation flight and performance quality with a pair of low-cost unmanned research fixed …
Setting The Right Tone: Benefits Of Music-Based Instruction In The Esl Classroom, Mollie Talada
Setting The Right Tone: Benefits Of Music-Based Instruction In The Esl Classroom, Mollie Talada
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Research has shown a definitive link between the cognitive processing of language and of musical sound. Music has also been shown to be an effective teaching tool in the ESL classroom. Despite the theoretical studies that draw connections between musical aptitude and linguistic ability, few studies have shown the efficacy of using music to improve student motivation and self-confidence, as well as students' perceptions of learning. The aim of this thesis was to bridge the gap between research and pedagogy and to provide student perceptions of the use of musical tasks in three aspects of their learning: (1) student self-confidence …
The Influence Of Memory Enhancement Techniques On Children's Testimony, Ria M. Travers
The Influence Of Memory Enhancement Techniques On Children's Testimony, Ria M. Travers
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Eyewitness testimony is often key evidence in court cases, but it is often difficult to obtain accurate eyewitness memories (Loftus, Miller, & Burns, 1978). This is especially true when this testimony must be acquired from preschool children because young children have been found to be susceptible to suggestive interviewing techniques (Krackow & Lynn, 2003). Several aspects of children's cognitive capabilities have been found to influence their suggestibility, including their source monitoring abilities, or their abilities to trace the source of memories (Ceci & Bruck, 1993). Therefore, source monitoring ability provides a possible point of intervention to decrease children's suggestibility. Source …
What Are Faculty Perceptions Of Using Emotional Intelligence In Pedagogy And Andragogy?, Eveldora R. Wheeler
What Are Faculty Perceptions Of Using Emotional Intelligence In Pedagogy And Andragogy?, Eveldora R. Wheeler
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation study compared the key findings from the first piece of research (pilot study) by allowing further exploration and re-examination of faculties' Perceptions of Using Emotional Intelligence (PUEI) in STEM, Social Sciences, online, and face to face in Pedagogy and Andragogy. This study draws particular attention to the notable rise of emotional issues emerging in differing educational contexts (online and face to face) and the significance of faculty response to their PUEI. Emotional intelligence, a complexity often viewed skeptically is a recurring theme for this study and can greatly benefit higher educational institutions, professional learning environments, and businesses particularly. …
Word Play: Modernist Women And Performative Writing, Kathryn Ridinger Smorul
Word Play: Modernist Women And Performative Writing, Kathryn Ridinger Smorul
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In Word Play: Modernist Women and Performative Writing I read modernist literary texts informed by theories about theatre, performance, and art. Exploring lesser-known works of Djuna Barnes, Gwendolyn Bennett, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and Mina Loy, I combine literary analysis and performance studies to discover how modernist texts "talk back" to performance theories.;Performance studies, of course, is an inter-discipline that includes anthropology, sociology, performing arts, and literary theory. Modernist authors, influenced as they often are by art, performance, and ritual, incorporate these interdisciplinary interests into a writing practice, specifically performative writing. Performative writing is not so much a matter of …
